Temperature dependent stereodynamics in surface scattering measured through subtle changes in the molecular wave function

A magnetically manipulated molecular beam technique is used to change the rotational orientation of H2 molecules which collide with a stepped Cu(511) surface and explore how the polarisation dependence of molecules scattering into the specular channel changes as a function of surface temperature. At all temperatures, H2 molecules that are rotating like cartwheels are more likely to be scattered into the specular channel than those that are rotating like helicopters. Furthermore, the scattered molecules are more likely to be rotating like cartwheels, regardless of their state before the collision. Increasing the temperature of the Cu(511) surface causes the polarisation effects to become stronger, with the scattering becoming more selective for H2 with cartwheel like rotation. Therefore, scattering a molecular beam of H2 from a Cu(511) surface and taking the molecules scattered into the specular channel provides a method to create a rotationally polarised beam of H2, where the polarisation can be tuned by changing the surface temperature. In contrast, the rotational orientation dependence observed for specular scattering from a flat Cu(111) surface is independent of surface temperature within the same temperature range.

Neutral beam microscopy with a reciprocal space approach using magnetic beam spin encoding

The emerging technique of neutral beam microscopy offers a non-perturbative way of imaging surfaces of various materials which cannot be studied using conventional microscopes. Current neutral beam microscopes use either diffractive focusing or pin-hole scanning to achieve spatial resolution, and are characterised by a strong dependence of the imaging time on the required resolution. In this work we introduce an alternative method for achieving spatial resolution with neutral atom beams which is based on manipulating the magnetic moments of the beam particles in a gradient field, and is characterised by a much weaker dependence of the imaging time on the image resolution. The validity of the imaging approach is demonstrated experimentally by reconstructing one dimensional profiles of the beam which are in good agreement with numerical simulation calculations. Numerical simulations are used to demonstrate the dependence of the signal to noise on the scan resolution and the topography of the sample, and assess the broadening effect due to the spread of velocities of the beam particles. The route towards implementing magnetic encoding in high resolution microscopes is discussed.

Characterisation of magnetic atomic and molecular beamlines for the extraction of empirical scattering-matrices

A recently developed magnetic molecular interferometry technique allows the experimental determination of how the amplitudes and phases of the molecular wave-function change during the collision of a gas phase molecule with a surface. This information, quantified by a scattering-matrix, provides a very stringent benchmark for developing accurate theoretical models as they can also be determined from scattering calculations and are particularly sensitive to the underlying interaction potential. However, the value of this comparison is necessarily limited by the accuracy with which an empirical scattering-matrix can be extracted from the experimental data. This paper presents the methods used to analyse the measurements and uses simulations to determine how various uncertainties in modelling the different magnetic elements which make up the beamline of the apparatus affect the accuracy with which the scattering-matrix can be extracted. It is shown that when signals have a noise level which corresponds to on the order of 1% of the oscillation amplitude, the uncertainties in the modelling do not significantly affect the ability to extract the scattering-matrix elements, with the error in the extracted values increasing to a few percent as the noise in the signals is increased to 10% of the oscillation amplitude. This therefore gives an estimate of the accuracy of the parameters that can be obtained from future measurements.

2D Helium Atom Diffraction from a Microscopic Spot

A method for measuring helium atom diffraction with micron-scale spatial resolution is demonstrated in a scanning helium microscope (SHeM) and applied to study a micron-scale spot on the (100) plane of a lithium fluoride (LiF) crystal. The positions of the observed diffraction peaks provide an accurate measurement of the local lattice spacing, while a combination of close-coupled scattering calculations and Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations reproduce the main variations in diffracted intensity. Subsequently, the diffraction results are used to enhance image contrast by measuring at different points in reciprocal space. The results open up the possibility for using helium microdiffraction to characterize the morphology of delicate or electron-sensitive materials on small scales. These include many fundamentally and technologically important samples which cannot be studied in conventional atom scattering instruments, such as small grain size exfoliated 2D materials, polycrystalline samples, and other surfaces that do not exhibit long-range order.

Neutral helium atom microscopy

Neutral helium atom microscopy, also referred to as scanning helium microscopy and commonly abbreviated SHeM or NAM (neutral atom microscopy), is a novel imaging technique that uses a beam of neutral helium atoms as an imaging probe. The technique offers a number of advantages such as the very low energy of the incident probing atoms (less than 0.1 eV), unsurpassed surface sensitivity (no penetration into the sample bulk), a charge neutral, inert probe and a high depth of field. This opens up for a range of interesting applications such as: imaging of fragile and/or non-conducting samples without damage, inspection of 2D materials and nano-coatings, with the possibility to test properties such as grain boundaries or roughness on the Å ngström scale (the wavelength of the incident helium atoms) and imaging of samples with high aspect ratios, with the potential to obtain true to scale height information of 3D surface topography with nanometer resolution: nano stereo microscopy. However, for a full exploitation of the technique, a range of experimental and theoretical issues still needs to be resolved. In this paper we review the research in the field. We do this by following the trajectory of the helium atoms step by step through the microscope: from the initial acceleration in the supersonic expansion used to generate the probing beam over the atom optical elements used to shape the beam (resolution limits), followed by interaction of the helium atoms with the sample (contrast properties) to the final detection and post-processing. We also review recent advances in scanning helium microscope design including a discussion of imaging with other atoms and molecules than helium.

Multiple echoes in beam spin-echo spectroscopy and their effect on measurements of ultra-fast dynamics

Helium (³He) spin-echo is a powerful experimental technique used to probe ultra-fast atomic scale surface dynamics. The analysis of these measurements is typically performed assuming there is only a single spin-echo condition, expected to produce a constant signal for pure elastic scattering, a monotonically decaying signal for quasi-elastic scattering and oscillations from inelastic scattering events. In the present work, we show that there are in fact four spin-echoes which must be correctly accounted for, and that even in the case of elastic scattering these additional echoes lead to oscillations which could mistakenly be interpreted as being due to inelastic scattering. We demonstrate that it is possible to accurately simulate the experimental data by propagating the³He through the measured magnetic field profile of the apparatus and considering the geometry of the machine, allowing the effect of these additional echoes to be disentangled from inelastic scattering events in future³He spin-echo measurements.

Measuring surface phonons using molecular spin-echo

A new method to measure surface phonons with a molecular beam is presented. The method extends the principles of ³He spin-echo spectroscopy, to the more complex case of a molecular beam exchanging energy with the surface. Measurements are presented for inelastic scattering of D₂ from a Cu(111) surface. Similarly to helium spin-echo, experiments can be performed along optimal tilted projections making it possible to resolve energy peaks with a high energy resolution which is not restricted by the spread of energies of the incident beam. Two analysis methods for these molecular spin echo experiments are presented. A classical approach, analogous to that used for helium spin-echo, explains the most dominant excitation peaks measured, whereas a semi-classical approach allows us to identify smaller peaks which are related to the complexity of the multiple spin-rotation states which exist for molecules.

Stopping molecular rotation using coherent ultra-low-energy magnetic manipulations

Rotational motion lies at the heart of intermolecular, molecule-surface chemistry and cold molecule science, motivating the development of methods to excite and de-excite rotations. Existing schemes involve perturbing the molecules with photons or electrons which supply or remove energy comparable to the rotational level spacing. Here, we study the possibility of de-exciting the molecular rotation of a D₂ molecule, from J = 2 to the non-rotating J = 0 state, without using an energy-matched perturbation. We show that passing the beam through a 1 m long magnetic field, which splits the rotational projection states by only 10⁻¹²eV, can change the probability that a molecule-surface collision will stop a molecule from rotating and lose rotational energy which is 9 orders larger than that of the magnetic manipulation. Calculations confirm that different rotational orientations have different de-excitation probabilities but underestimate rotational flips (∆m_J\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\ne$$\end{document}≠0), highlighting the importance of the results as a sensitive benchmark for further developing theoretical models of molecule-surface interactions.

Manipulating the rotational motions of molecules may provide a tool for controlling chemical processes. Here the authors demonstrate that the rotation of a D₂ molecule can be stopped, upon collision with a metal surface, by a magnetic field that affects the rotational levels to a much smaller extent than the energy difference upon de-excitation.

Hydrogen transfer-induced S-C rearrangement in the molecular ion of thioanisole derivatives with site-specificity

In this study, the gas-phase fragmentations of molecular ions of thioanisole derivatives were investigated using electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS). In the EI-MS spectrum, a characteristic fragment ion [M - SH]⁺ was observed. The same result with the molecular ion of 3-aminothioanisole was enhanced, while the same phenomenon was not obvious in the EI-MS spectra of 2- or 4-aminothioanisole. To explain the fragmentation, we proposed a mechanism that involved the hydrogen transfer-induced S-C rearrangement with 3 pathways. Substituent effect results, deuterium-labelled experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations also confirmed the proposed mechanism.
