Complex dynamics in a fractional order nephron pressure and flow regulation model

Cardiovascular diseases can be attributed to irregular blood pressure, which may be caused by malfunctioning kidneys that regulate blood pressure. Research has identified complex oscillations in the mechanisms used by the kidney to regulate blood pressure. This study uses established physiological knowledge and earlier autoregulation models to derive a fractional order nephron autoregulation model. The dynamical behaviour of the model is analyzed using bifurcation plots, revealing periodic oscillations, chaotic regions, and multistability. A lattice array of the model is used to study collective behaviour and demonstrates the presence of chimeras in the network. A ring network of the fractional order model is also considered, and a diffusion coupling strength is adopted. A basin of synchronization is derived, considering coupling strength, fractional order or number of neighbours as parameters, and measuring the strength of incoherence. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of the nephron autoregulation model and its potential implications for cardiovascular diseases.

Turing instability mechanism of short-memory formation in multilayer FitzHugh-Nagumo network

Introduction

The study of brain function has been favored by scientists, but the mechanism of short-term memory formation has yet to be precise.

Research problem

Since the formation of short-term memories depends on neuronal activity, we try to explain the mechanism from the neuron level in this paper.

Research contents and methods

Due to the modular structures of the brain, we analyze the pattern properties of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model (FHN) on a multilayer network (coupled by a random network). The conditions of short-term memory formation in the multilayer FHN model are obtained. Then the time delay is introduced to more closely match patterns of brain activity. The properties of periodic solutions are obtained by the central manifold theorem.

Conclusion

When the diffusion coeffcient, noise intensity np, and network connection probability p reach a specific range, the brain forms a relatively vague memory. It is found that network and time delay can induce complex cluster dynamics. And the synchrony increases with the increase of p. That is, short-term memory becomes clearer.

Low Cost Digital Implementation of Hybrid FitzHugh Nagumo-Morris Lecar Neuron Model Considering Electromagnetic Flux Coupling

Digital realization of neuron models, especially implementation on a field programmable gate array (FPGA), is one of the key objectives of neuromorphic research, because the effective hardware realization of the biological neural networks plays a crucial role in implementing the behaviors of the brain for future applications. In this paper, a hybrid FitzHugh Nagumo-Morris Lecar (FNML) neuron model with electromagnetic flux coupling is considered, and two multiplierless piecewise linear (PWL) models, which have similar behaviors to the biological neuron, are presented. A comparison between digital implementation results of the original FNML and PWL models illustrates that, the PWL1 model provides a 65% speed-up with an overall saving (in FPGA resources) of 66.2%, and the PWL2 model yields a 71% speed-up with an overall saving of 78.2%.

Boundary dynamics of a non-smooth memristive Hindmarsh-Rose neuron system

In this paper, the complex dynamics of non-smooth Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neuron system with local active memristors is discussed through the theory of discontinuous dynamical system. Six mapping structures through two boundaries are employed to illustrate the various switching behaviors of the system. The analytical conditions of the HR system for the switching motions, such as passable motion and grazing motion, are investigated, and the extreme multistability of the improved HR neuron is revealed through switching bifurcations, parameter maps, and attraction basins. The firing activities of various modes in the HR system and the coexistence of various firing behaviors are observed by changing the initial values. Furthermore, the hardware circuit implement of the HR system is established to validate the numerical results.

Spiral waves in a hybrid discrete excitable media with electromagnetic flux coupling

Though there are many neuron models based on differential equations, the complexity in realizing them into digital circuits is still a challenge. Hence, many new discrete neuron models have been recently proposed, which can be easily implemented in digital circuits. We consider the well-known FitzHugh-Nagumo model and derive the discrete version of the model considering the sigmoid type of recovery variable and electromagnetic flux coupling. We show the various time series plots confirming the existence of periodic and chaotic bursting as in differential equation type neuron models. Also, we have used the bifurcation plots, Lyapunov exponents, and frequency bifurcations to investigate the dynamics of the proposed discrete neuron model. Different topologies of networks like single, two, and three layers are considered to analyze the wave propagation phenomenon in the network. We introduce the concept of using energy levels of nodes to study the spiral wave existence and compare them with the spatiotemporal snapshots. Interestingly, the energy plots clearly show that when the energy level of nodes is different and distributed, the occurrence of the spiral waves is identified in the network.
