Comparative analysis of polaritons in bulk, dielectric slabs, and planar cavities with implications for cavity-modified reactivity

Molecular Strong Coupling and Cavity Finesse

Molecular strong coupling offers exciting prospects in physics, chemistry, and materials science. While attention has been focused on developing realistic models for the molecular systems, the important role played by the entire photonic mode structure of the optical cavities has been less explored. We show that the effectiveness of molecular strong coupling may be critically dependent on cavity finesse. Specifically we only see emission associated with a dispersive lower polariton for cavities with sufficient finesse. By developing an analytical model of cavity photoluminescence in a multimode structure we clarify the role of finite-finesse in polariton formation and show that lowering the finesse reduces the extent of the mixing of light and matter in polariton states. We suggest that the detailed nature of the photonic modes supported by a cavity will be as important in developing a coherent framework for molecular strong coupling as the inclusion of realistic molecular models.

Non-Polaritonic Effects in Cavity-Modified Photochemistry

Strong coupling of molecules to vacuum fields is widely reported to lead to modified chemical properties such as reaction rates. However, some recent attempts to reproduce infrared strong coupling results have not been successful, suggesting that factors other than strong coupling may sometimes be involved. In the first vacuum-modified chemistry experiment, changes to a molecular photoisomerization process in the ultraviolet-visible spectral range are attributed to strong coupling of the molecules to visible light. Here, this process is re-examined, finding significant variations in photoisomerization rates consistent with the original work. However, there is no evidence that these changes need to be attributed to strong coupling. Instead, it is suggested that the photoisomerization rates involved are most strongly influenced by the absorption of ultraviolet radiation in the cavity. These results indicate that care must be taken to rule out non-polaritonic effects before invoking strong coupling to explain any changes of properties arising in cavity-based experiments.

Resonance Enhancement of Vibrational Polariton Chemistry Obtained from the Mixed Quantum-Classical Dynamics Simulations

We applied a variety of mixed quantum-classical (MQC) approaches to simulate the VSC-influenced reaction rate constant. All of these MQC simulations treat the key vibrational levels associated with the reaction coordinate in the quantum subsystem (as quantum states), whereas all other degrees of freedom (DOFs) are treated inside the classical subsystem. We find that, as long as we have the quantum state descriptions for the vibrational DOFs, one can correctly describe the VSC resonance condition when the cavity frequency matches the bond vibrational frequency. This correct resonance behavior can be obtained regardless of the detailed MQC methods that one uses. The results suggest that the MQC approaches can generate semiquantitative agreement with the exact results for rate constant changes when changing the cavity frequency, the light-matter coupling strength, or the cavity lifetime. The finding of this work suggests that one can use computationally economic MQC approaches to explore the collective coupling scenario when many molecules are collectively coupled to many cavity modes in the future.

The Rise and Current Status of Polaritonic Photochemistry and Photophysics

The interaction between molecular electronic transitions and electromagnetic fields can be enlarged to the point where distinct hybrid light-matter states, polaritons, emerge. The photonic contribution to these states results in increased complexity as well as an opening to modify the photophysics and photochemistry beyond what normally can be seen in organic molecules. It is today evident that polaritons offer opportunities for molecular photochemistry and photophysics, which has caused an ever-rising interest in the field. Focusing on the experimental landmarks, this review takes its reader from the advent of the field of polaritonic chemistry, over the split into polariton chemistry and photochemistry, to present day status within polaritonic photochemistry and photophysics. To introduce the field, the review starts with a general description of light-matter interactions, how to enhance these, and what characterizes the coupling strength. Then the photochemistry and photophysics of strongly coupled systems using Fabry-Perot and plasmonic cavities are described. This is followed by a description of room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation/polariton lasing in polaritonic systems. The review ends with a discussion on the benefits, limitations, and future developments of strong exciton-photon coupling using organic molecules.

Perfect Absorption and Strong Coupling in Supported MoS2 Multilayers

Perfect absorption and strong coupling are two highly sought-after regimes of light-matter interactions. Both regimes have been studied as separate phenomena in excitonic 2D materials, particularly in MoS₂. However, the structures used to reach these regimes often require intricate nanofabrication. Here, we demonstrate the occurrence of perfect absorption and strong coupling in thin MoS₂ multilayers supported by a glass substrate. We measure reflection spectra of mechanically exfoliated MoS₂ flakes at various angles beyond the light-line via Fourier plane imaging and spectroscopy and find that absorption in MoS₂ monolayers increases up to 74% at the C-exciton by illuminating at the critical angle. Perfect absorption is achieved for ultrathin MoS₂ flakes (4-8 layers) with a notable angle and frequency sensitivity to the exact number of layers. By calculating zeros and poles of the scattering matrix in the complex frequency plane, we identify perfect absorption (zeros) and strong coupling (poles) conditions for thin (<10 layers) and thick (>10 layers) limits. Our findings reveal rich physics of light-matter interactions in bare MoS₂ flakes, which could be useful for nanophotonic and light harvesting applications.

Dissociation dynamics of a diatomic molecule in an optical cavity

We study the dissociation dynamics of a diatomic molecule, modeled as a Morse oscillator, coupled to an optical cavity. A marked suppression of the dissociation probability, both classical and quantum, is observed for cavity frequencies significantly below the fundamental transition frequency of the molecule. We show that the suppression in the probability is due to the nonlinearity of the dipole function. The effect can be rationalized entirely in terms of the structures in the classical phase space of the model system.

Shining light on the microscopic resonant mechanism responsible for cavity-mediated chemical reactivity

Strong light-matter interaction in cavity environments is emerging as a promising approach to control chemical reactions in a non-intrusive and efficient manner. The underlying mechanism that distinguishes between steering, accelerating, or decelerating a chemical reaction has, however, remained unclear, hampering progress in this frontier area of research. We leverage quantum-electrodynamical density-functional theory to unveil the microscopic mechanism behind the experimentally observed reduced reaction rate under cavity induced resonant vibrational strong light-matter coupling. We observe multiple resonances and obtain the thus far theoretically elusive but experimentally critical resonant feature for a single strongly coupled molecule undergoing the reaction. While we describe only a single mode and do not explicitly account for collective coupling or intermolecular interactions, the qualitative agreement with experimental measurements suggests that our conclusions can be largely abstracted towards the experimental realization. Specifically, we find that the cavity mode acts as mediator between different vibrational modes. In effect, vibrational energy localized in single bonds that are critical for the reaction is redistributed differently which ultimately inhibits the reaction.

Multimode polariton effects on molecular energy transport and spectral fluctuations

Despite the potential paradigm breaking capability of microcavities to control chemical processes, the extent to which photonic devices change properties of molecular materials is still unclear, in part due to challenges in modeling hybrid light-matter excitations delocalized over many length scales. We overcome these challenges for a photonic wire under strong coupling with a molecular ensemble. Our simulations provide a detailed picture of the effect of photonic wires on spectral and transport properties of a disordered molecular material. We find stronger changes to the probed molecular observables when the cavity is redshifted relative to the molecules and energetic disorder is weak. These trends are expected to hold also in higher-dimensional cavities, but are not captured with theories that only include a single cavity-mode. Therefore, our results raise important issues for future experiments and model building focused on unraveling new ways to manipulate chemistry with optical cavities.
