Structural transformations in Cu, Ag, and Au metal nanoclusters

Size and temperature dependent shapes of copper nanocrystals using parallel tempering molecular dynamics

We performed parallel-tempering molecular dynamics simulations to predict the temperature- and size-dependent equilibrium shapes of a series of Cu nanocrystals in the 100- to 200-atom size range. Our study indicates that temperature-dependent, solid-solid shape transitions occur frequently for Cu nanocrystals in this size range. Complementary calculations with electronic density functional theory indicate that vibrational entropy favors nanocrystals with a shape intermediate between a decahedron and an icosahedron. Overall, we find that entropy plays a significant role in determining the shapes Cu nanocrystals, so studies aimed at determining minimum-energy shapes may fail to correctly predict shapes observed at experimental temperatures. We also observe significant shape changes with nanocrystal size - sometimes with changes in a single atom. The information from this study could be useful in efforts to devise processing routes to achieve selective nanocrystal shapes.

Pd8 Cluster: Too Small to Melt? A BOMD Study

The question of whether a solid-liquid phase transition occurs in small clusters poses a fundamental challenge. In this study, we attempt to elucidate this phenomenon through a thorough examination of the thermal behavior and structural stability of Pd8 clusters employing ab initio simulations. Initially, a systematic global search is carried out to identify the various isomers of the Pd8 cluster. This is accomplished by employing an ab initio basin-hopping algorithm and using the PBE/SDD scheme integrated in the Gaussian code. The resulting isomers are further refined through reoptimization using the deMon2k package. To ensure the structural firmness of the lowest-energy isomer, we calculated normal modes. The structural stability as a function of temperature is analyzed through the Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) approach. Multiple BOMD trajectories at distinct simulated temperatures are examined with data clustering analysis to determine cluster isomers. This analysis establishes a connection between the potential energy landscape and the simulated temperature. To address the question of cluster melting, canonical parallel-tempering BOMD runs are performed and analyzed with the multiple-histogram method. A broad maximum in the heat capacity curve indicates a melting transition between 500 and 600 K. To further examine this transition, the mean-squared displacement and the pair-distance distribution function are calculated. The results of these calculations confirm the existence of a solid-liquid phase transition, as indicated by the heat capacity curve.

Charting Nanocluster Structures via Convolutional Neural Networks

A general method to obtain a representation of the structural landscape of nanoparticles in terms of a limited number of variables is proposed. The method is applied to a large data set of parallel tempering molecular dynamics simulations of gold clusters of 90 and 147 atoms, silver clusters of 147 atoms, and copper clusters of 147 atoms, covering a plethora of structures and temperatures. The method leverages convolutional neural networks to learn the radial distribution functions of the nanoclusters and distills a low-dimensional chart of the structural landscape. This strategy is found to give rise to a physically meaningful and differentiable mapping of the atom positions to a low-dimensional manifold in which the main structural motifs are clearly discriminated and meaningfully ordered. Furthermore, unsupervised clustering on the low-dimensional data proved effective at further splitting the motifs into structural subfamilies characterized by very fine and physically relevant differences such as the presence of specific punctual or planar defects or of atoms with particular coordination features. Owing to these peculiarities, the chart also enabled tracking of the complex structural evolution in a reactive trajectory. In addition to visualization and analysis of complex structural landscapes, the presented approach offers a general, low-dimensional set of differentiable variables that has the potential to be used for exploration and enhanced sampling purposes.
