Abstract
Three common symmetries exist in the natural visual world: (i) mirror symmetry, i.e., reflections around a vertical axis, (ii) radial symmetry, i.e., rotations around a point, and (iii) translational symmetry, i.e., shifted repetitions. Are these processed by a common class of visual mechanism? Using stimuli comprising arrays of Gaussian blobs we examined this question using a visual search protocol in which observers located a single symmetric target patch among varying numbers of random-blob distractor patches. The testing protocol used a blocked present/absent task and both search times and accuracy were recorded. Search times for mirror and radial symmetry increased significantly with the number of distractors, as did translational-symmetry patterns containing few repetitions. However translational-symmetry patterns with four repeating sectors produced search slopes close to zero. Fourier analysis revealed that, as with images of natural scenes, the structural information in both mirror- and radial-symmetric patterns is carried by the phase spectrum. However, for translational patterns with four repeating sectors, the amplitude spectrum appears to capture the structure, consistent with previous analyses of texture regularity. Modeling revealed that while the mirror and radial patterns produced an approximately Gaussian-shaped energy response profile as a function of spatial frequency, the translational pattern profiles contained a distinctive spike, the magnitude of which increased with the number of repeating sectors. We propose distinct mechanisms for the detection of different symmetry types: a mechanism that encodes local positional information to detect mirror- and radial-symmetric patterns and a mechanism that computes energy in narrowband filters for the detection of translational symmetry containing many sectors.

Abstract
Extrastriate visual areas are strongly activated by image symmetry. Less is known about symmetry representation at object-level rather than image-level. Here we investigated electrophysiological responses to symmetry, generated by amodal completion of partially-occluded polygon shapes. We used a similar paradigm in four experiments (N = 112). A fully-visible abstract shape (either symmetric or asymmetric) was presented for 250 ms (t0). A large rectangle covered it entirely for 250 ms (t1) and then moved to one side to reveal one half of the shape hidden behind (t2, 1000 ms). Note that at t2 no symmetry could be extracted from retinal image information. In half of the trials the shape was the same as previously presented, in the other trials it was replaced by a novel shape. Participants matched shapes similarity (Exp. 1 and Exp. 2), or their colour (Exp. 3) or the orientation of a triangle superimposed to the shapes (Exp. 4). The fully-visible shapes (t0-t1) elicited automatic symmetry-specific ERP responses in all experiments. Importantly, there was an exposure-dependent symmetry-response to the occluded shapes that were recognised as previously seen (t2). Exp. 2 and Exp.4 confirmed this second ERP (t2) did not reflect a reinforcement of a residual carry-over response from t0. We conclude that the extrastriate symmetry-network can achieve amodal representation of symmetry from occluded objects that have been previously experienced as wholes.

Abstract
Human perception of symmetry is associated with activation in an extended network of extrastriate visual areas. This activation generates an ERP called the Sustained Posterior Negativity (SPN). In most studies so far, the stimuli have been defined by luminance. We tested whether the SPN is present when stimuli are defined by stereoscopic disparity using random dot stereograms (RDS). In Experiment 1, we compared the SPN signal for contours specified by binocular disparity and contours specified by monocular cues. The SPN was equivalent, suggesting that the type of contour does not alter the SPN signal. In Experiment 2 we exploited the unique property of RDS to provide unambiguous figure-ground arrangements. Psychophysical work has shown that symmetry is more easily detected when it is a property of a single object (i.e., within a figure), compared to a property of a gap between two objects (i.e., the ground). Therefore, the target regions in this experiment could either be foreground or background. The SPN onset was delayed when the symmetry was in a ground region. This may be because object formation interferes with the processing of shape information in the ground region.

Abstract
An Event Related Potential response to visual symmetry, known as the Sustained Posterior Negativity (SPN), is generated whether symmetry is task relevant or not, and whether symmetry is attended or not. However, no study has yet examined interference from concurrent memory tasks. To answer this fundamental question, we investigated whether the SPN is robust to variation in Visual Working Memory (VWM) load. In Experiment 1 (N = 24), each trial involved a sample display, a probe and a test display. Sample and test displays contained either four colors or four black shapes, and the probe was either a symmetrical or random pattern. We compared a memory task and a passive viewing task. In the memory task, participants held color or shape information in VWM when the probe was presented. In the passive viewing task, there were no memory demands. Contrary to our predictions, there was no evidence that VWM interfered with the symmetry response. Instead, there was a general SPN enhancement during both color and shape memory tasks compared to passive viewing. In Experiment 2 (N = 24), we used symmetrical patterns themselves as sample and test to maximize interference. Again, the SPN was enhanced in the memory task compared to passive viewing. We conclude that the visual symmetry response is not impaired by concurrent VWM tasks, even when these tasks involve remembering symmetry itself. It seems that the SPN is not only attention-proof, but also memory-proof. This adds to evidence that symmetry perception is robust and automatic.

Abstract
The perception and evaluation of decorative patterns can have a high impact in daily life but has received little empirical attention. This article attempts to offer some insight in terms of the regularity and semantic decodability. The implicit attitudes of subjects were measured by the Implicit Association Test. The results showed that regularity and semantic information can be automatically evaluated. The regular and realistic wallpaper decorative patterns are implicitly preferred to random and abstract ones. The Implicit Association Test effect of the former was greater than the latter. The increase in the number of motifs led to a decrease in the response latencies of regular and realistic patterns. The findings indicated that the processing fluency of wallpaper patterns is enhanced by a translational symmetry operation and a higher conceptual fluency of motifs. The resulting processing acceleration in high-density patterns may be due to the formation of a better Gestalt when the motifs are closer to one another.

Abstract
Most people like symmetry, and symmetry has been extensively used in visual art and architecture. In this study, we compared preference for images of abstract and familiar objects in the original format or when containing perfect bilateral symmetry. We created pairs of images for different categories: male faces, female faces, polygons, smoothed version of the polygons, flowers, and landscapes. This design allows us to compare symmetry preference in different domains. Each observer saw all categories randomly interleaved but saw only one of the two images in a pair. After recording preference, we recorded a rating of how salient the symmetry was for each image, and measured how quickly observers could decide which of the two images in a pair was symmetrical. Results reveal a general preference for symmetry in the case of shapes and faces. For landscapes, natural (no perfect symmetry) images were preferred. Correlations with judgments of saliency were present but generally low, and for landscapes the salience of symmetry was negatively related to preference. However, even within the category where symmetry was not liked (landscapes), the separate analysis of original and modified stimuli showed an interesting pattern: Salience of symmetry was correlated positively (artificial) or negatively (original) with preference, suggesting different effects of symmetry within the same class of stimuli based on context and categorization.

Abstract
Visual complexity is relevant for many areas ranging from improving usability of technical displays or websites up to understanding aesthetic experiences. Therefore, many attempts have been made to relate objective properties of images to perceived complexity in artworks and other images. It has been argued that visual complexity is a multidimensional construct mainly consisting of two dimensions: A quantitative dimension that increases complexity through number of elements, and a structural dimension representing order negatively related to complexity. The objective of this work is to study human perception of visual complexity utilizing two large independent sets of abstract patterns. A wide range of computational measures of complexity was calculated, further combined using linear models as well as machine learning (random forests), and compared with data from human evaluations. Our results confirm the adequacy of existing two-factor models of perceived visual complexity consisting of a quantitative and a structural factor (in our case mirror symmetry) for both of our stimulus sets. In addition, a non-linear transformation of mirror symmetry giving more influence to small deviations from symmetry greatly increased explained variance. Thus, we again demonstrate the multidimensional nature of human complexity perception and present comprehensive quantitative models of the visual complexity of abstract patterns, which might be useful for future experiments and applications.

Abstract
Humans have a preference for curved over angular shapes, an effect noted by artists as well as scientists. It may be that people like smooth curves or that people dislike angles, or both. We investigated this phenomenon in four experiments. Using abstract shapes differing in type of contour (angular vs. curved) and complexity, Experiment 1 confirmed a preference for curvature not linked to perceived complexity. Experiment 2 tested whether the effect was modulated by distance. If angular shapes are associated with a threat, the effect may be stronger when they are presented within peripersonal space. This hypothesis was not supported. Experiment 3 tested whether preference for curves occurs when curved lines are compared to straight lines without angles. Sets of coloured lines (angular vs. curved vs. straight) were seen through a circular or square aperture. Curved lines were liked more than either angular or straight lines. Therefore, angles are not necessary to generate a preference for curved shapes. Finally, Experiment 4 used an implicit measure of preference, the manikin task, to measure approach/avoidance behaviour. Results did not confirm a pattern of avoidance for angularity but only a pattern of approach for curvature. Our experiments suggest that the threat association hypothesis cannot fully explain the curvature effect and that curved shapes are, per se, visually pleasant.

Abstract
There is evidence of a preference for visual symmetry. This is true from mate selection in the animal world to the aesthetic appreciation of works of art. It has been proposed that this preference is due to processing fluency, which engenders positive affect. But is visual symmetry pleasant? Evidence is mixed as explicit preferences show that this is the case. In contrast, implicit measures show that visual symmetry does not spontaneously engender positive affect but it depends on participants intentionally assessing visual regularities. In four experiments using variants of the affective priming paradigm, we investigated when visual symmetry engenders positive affect. Findings showed that, when no Stroop-like effects or post-lexical mechanisms enter into play, visual symmetry spontaneously elicits positive affect and results in affective congruence effects.

Abstract
In the early twentieth century, the Bauhaus revolutionized art and design by using simple colors and forms. Wassily Kandinsky was especially interested in the relationship of these two visual attributes and postulated a fundamental correspondence between color and form: yellow triangle, red square and blue circle. Subsequent empirical studies used preference judgments to test Kandinsky's original color-form combinations, usually yielding inconsistent results. We have set out to test the validity of these postulated associations by using the Implicit Association Test. Participants pressed one of two buttons on each trial. On some trials they classified shapes (e.g., circle or triangle). On interleaved trials they classified colors (e.g., blue or yellow). Response times should theoretically be faster when the button mapping follows Kandinsky's associations: For example, when the left key is used to report blue or circle and the right is used for yellow and triangle, than when the response mapping is the opposite of this (blue or triangle, yellow or circle). Our findings suggest that there is no implicit association between the original color-form combinations. Of the three combinations we tested, there was only a marginal effect in one case. It can be concluded that the IAT does not support Kandinsky's postulated color-form associations, and that these are probably not a universal property of the visual system.

Abstract
Symmetrical visual patterns are preferred to random patterns. Studies using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) have shown that symmetry is associated with positive valence words (e.g. love), and random with negative valence words (e.g. hate). Valence is an important aspect of emotion, but equally interesting is the relationship between the symmetry–random dimension and the dimensions of arousal and complexity. Possible links have long been discussed but empirical evidence is limited. Using a series of four IAT experiments, we report that participants implicitly associate symmetrical patterns with words high in arousal, and random patterns with low arousal. We also found that symmetrical patterns were associated with simple mathematic expressions, while random patterns were associated with complex expressions. No link was found for another aspect of mathematical complexity (smaller or larger numbers). This pattern of results shows that aesthetic responses to symmetry involve both positive valence and high arousal and that these emotional responses arise from the perceptual simplicity of symmetry, in line with the fluency account of aesthetics.

Abstract
The perception and appreciation of visual symmetry have been studied in several recent EEG experiments. Although symmetry is known to be an important determinant of aesthetic preference, previous studies have concluded that evaluation does not occur spontaneously. These studies also found that symmetrical and random patterns do not differ in terms of early sensory processing, within 200 ms of stimulus onset. We presented participants with symmetrical or random abstract patterns, which they had to classify correctly. Contrary to previous work, we found that N1 amplitude was sensitive to all types of regularity, and P1 was sensitive to rotational symmetry. We also found that activity in the Zygomaticus Major, the facial muscle responsible for smiling, was greater for reflection patterns. However, we were able to reverse this effect by changing the task so that participants had to treat random patterns as the target stimuli. We conclude that participants spontaneously select reflectional symmetry as the target, and positive affective responses automatically follow from successful target detection. This work provides a new account of the neural mechanisms involved in visual symmetry perception.
