Predictions of U-Shaped Backward Pattern Masking from Considerations of the Spatio-Temporal Frequency Response

Attending to global versus local stimulus features modulates neural processing of low versus high spatial frequencies: an analysis with event-related brain potentials

Spatial frequency (SF) selection has long been recognized to play a role in global and local processing, though the nature of the relationship between SF processing and global/local perception is debated. Previous studies have shown that attention to relatively lower SFs facilitates global perception, and that attention to relatively higher SFs facilitates local perception. Here we recorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether processing of low versus high SFs is modulated automatically during global and local perception, and to examine the time course of any such effects. Participants compared bilaterally presented hierarchical letter stimuli and attended to either the global or local levels. Irrelevant SF grating probes flashed at the center of the display 200 ms after the onset of the hierarchical letter stimuli could either be low or high in SF. It was found that ERPs elicited by the SF grating probes differed as a function of attended level (global versus local). ERPs elicited by low SF grating probes were more positive in the interval 196–236 ms during global than local attention, and this difference was greater over the right occipital scalp. In contrast, ERPs elicited by the high SF gratings were more positive in the interval 250–290 ms during local than global attention, and this difference was bilaterally distributed over the occipital scalp. These results indicate that directing attention to global versus local levels of a hierarchical display facilitates automatic perceptual processing of low versus high SFs, respectively, and this facilitation is not limited to the locations occupied by the hierarchical display. The relatively long latency of these attention-related ERP modulations suggests that initial (early) SF processing is not affected by attention to hierarchical level, lending support to theories positing a higher level mechanism to underlie the relationship between SF processing and global versus local perception.

Recent models and findings in visual backward masking: a comparison, review, and update

Visual backward masking not only is an empirically rich and theoretically interesting phenomenon but also has found increasing application as a powerful methodological tool in studies of visual information processing and as a useful instrument for investigating visual function in a variety of specific subject populations. Since the dual-channel, sustained-transient approach to visual masking was introduced about two decades ago, several new models of backward masking and metacontrast have been proposed as alternative approaches to visual masking. In this article, we outline, review, and evaluate three such approaches: an extension of the dual-channel approach as realized in the neural network model of retino-cortical dynamics (Ogmen, 1993), the perceptual retouch theory (Bachmann, 1984, 1994), and the boundary contour system (Francis, 1997; Grossberg & Mingolla, 1985b). Recent psychophysical and electrophysiological findings relevant to backward masking are reviewed and, whenever possible, are related to the aforementioned models. Besides noting the positive aspects of these models, we also list their problems and suggest changes that may improve them and experiments that can empirically test them.

Switching or sharing in dual-task line-length discrimination?

In two experiments, we tested whether subjects switched or shared attention between two simultaneously relevant line-length discrimination tasks. Switching models that allowed within- as well as between-trial switching were considered. In the first experiment, stimulus duration was varied randomly from trial to trial. With varied durations, many switching models predict negative contingencies: for a given duration and attentional allocation, accurate responses on one task should be associated with inaccurate responses on the other task. The results, however, showed no negative contingencies, which is consistent with sharing models. In the second experiment, stimulus duration was reduced to 20 msec, yet responses were more than 75% correct overall. This implies that information was obtained about both of the tasks within single trials, contradicting those switching models which predict that information can be obtained from, at most, one task within a period of 20 msec or less. In short, the results of both experiments support sharing models.

An investigation into the representations involved in visual masking

Two experiments are reported in which the nature of the representations involved in visual masking with spatially overlapping stimuli is investigated. Recent work is described which was consistent with the proposal of Breitmeyer and Ganz (1976) that masking phenomena can be understood in terms of interactions between spatial-frequency-tuned channels. In the first experiment targets which had been filtered to contain only high or low spatial frequencies were masked by high or low frequency masks. The results were more consistent with a model of masking in which higher-order representations, possibly derived from spatial-frequency information, were involved. A second experiment was carried out to test this conjecture which involved investigating the interaction between the effects of learning and the type of information used in target identification. The results provided further support for the model.

The effect of spatial frequency and contrast on visual persistence

The visual persistence of sinusoidal gratings of varying spatial frequency and contrast was measured. It was found that the persistence of low-contrast gratings was longer than that of high-contrast stimuli for all spatial frequencies investigated. At higher contrast levels of 1 and 4 cycles deg-1 gratings, a tendency for persistence to be independent of contrast was observed. For 12 cycles deg-1 gratings, however, persistence continued to decrease with increasing contrast. These results are compared with recently published data on other temporal responses, and are discussed in terms of the different properties of sustained and transient channels.

Decrease in metacontrast masking following adaptation to flicker

Selective adaptation was used to explore the characterisitcs of a metacontrast masking stimulus which contribute to its effectiveness in masking the test stimulus. Subjects adapted for 10 s to a configuration like the masking stimulus that was either continuously on or flickering. Following this they viewed a metacontrast presentation and estimated the brightness of the test stimulus. Prior adaptation to a continuously present stimulus did not appreciably affect metacontrast masking; however, masking was greatly reduced following adaptation to flickering stimuli. These results are consistent with recent models of metacontrast masking based on transient and sustained visual channels.

Spatial-frequency masking with briefly pulsed patterns

Spatial-frequency masking was studied with briefly pulsed (25 ms) vertical gratings. The mask was a noise grating, and the test pattern was a sinusoidal grating. A low-frequency band of noise masked a low- but not high-spatial-frequency test grating when the patterns were presented simultaneously. A high-frequency band of noise did not mask a low-frequency test grating when the patterns were presented simultaneously or when the mask was presented after the test pattern (backward masking). Masking was, however, observed when the mask or test pattern was of sufficiently high contrast so that the stimuli had nonlinear distortion and thus produced DC shifts of the field luminance.
