Right-Hemisphere Superiority in the Discrimination of Spatial Phase

Global precedence, spatial frequency channels, and the statistics of natural images

A great deal of evidence suggests that early in processing, retinal images are filtered by parallel, spatial frequency selective channels. We attempt to incorporate this view of early vision with the principle of global precedence, which holds that Gestalt-like processes sensitive to global image configurations tend to dominate local feature processing in human pattern perception. Global precedence is inferred from the pattern of reaction times observed when visual patterns contain multiple cues at different levels of spatial scale. Specifically, it is frequently observed that global processing times are largely unaffected by conflicting local cues, but local processing times are substantially lengthened by conflicting global cues. The asymmetry of these effects suggests the dominant role of global configurations. Since global spatial information is effectively represented by low spatial frequencies, global precedence potentially implies a low frequency dominance. The thesis is that low spatial frequencies tend to be available before information carried by higher frequency bands, producing a coarse-to-fine temporal order in visual spatial perception. It is suggested that a variety of factors contribute to the "prior entry" of low frequency information, including the high contrast gain of the magnocellular pathway, the amplitude spectra typical of natural images, and inhibitory interactions between the parallel frequency-tuned channels. Evidence suggesting a close relationship between global precedence and spatial frequency channels is provided by observations that the essential features of the global precedence effect are obtained using patterns consisting of low and high frequency sinusoids. The hypothesis that these asymmetric interference effects are due to interactions between parallel spatial channels is supported by an analysis of reaction times (RTs), which shows that RTs to redundant low and high frequency cues produce less facilitation than predictions that assume the channels are independent. In view of previous work showing that global precedence depends upon the low frequency content of the stimuli, we suggest that low spatial frequencies represent the sine qua non for the dominance of configurational cues in human pattern perception, and that this configurational dominance reflects the microgenesis of visual pattern perception. This general view of the temporal dynamics of visual pattern recognition is discussed, is considered from an evolutionary perspective, and is related to certain statistical regularities in natural scenes. Potential adaptive advantages of an interactive parallel architecture that confers an initial processing advantage to low resolution information are explored.

Mandatory processing of irrelevant fearful face features in visual search

Faces expressing fear may attract attention in an automatic bottom-up fashion. Here we address this issue with magneto-encephalographic (MEG) recordings in subjects performing a demanding visual search combined with the presentation of irrelevant neutral or fearful faces. The impact of the faces' emotional expression on attentional selection was assessed by analyzing the N2pc component--a modulation of the event-related magnetic field response known to reflect attentional focusing in visual search. We observed that lateralized fearful faces elicited an N2pc approximately between 240 and 400 msec in ventral extrastriate cortex that was independent of the N2pc reflecting target selection in visual search. Despite their clear influence on neural processing, fearful faces did not significantly influence behavioral performance. To clarify this discrepancy, we further performed an MEG experiment in which the demands of the search task were reduced. Under those conditions, lateralized fearful faces elicited an N2pc response that was again independent of the N2pc response to the search target. Behavioral performance was, however, influenced in a significant manner, suggesting that for behavioral effects to appear, sufficient attentional resources need to be left unoccupied by the search task--a notion put forward by the perceptual load theory. Our observations are taken to indicate that irrelevant fearful faces influence attentional processing in extrastriate visual cortex in an automatic fashion and independent of other task-relevant attentional operations. However, this may not necessarily be echoed at the behavioral level as long as task-relevant selection operations exhaust attentional resources.

Flexible contrast gain control in the right hemisphere

This study investigates whether the right hemisphere has more flexible contrast gain control settings for the identification of spatial frequency. Right-handed participants identified 1 and 9 cycles per degree sinusoidal gratings presented either to the left visual field-right hemisphere (LVF-RH) or the right visual field-left hemisphere (RVF-LH). When luminance contrast was randomized across a wide range (20-60%), performance gradually improved with contrast in the LVF-RH. Conversely, performance in the RVF-LH was disrupted and saturated for 20 and 60% of contrast, respectively, leading to a LVF-RH advantage for these contrast levels. When contrast was blocked or randomized for a smaller range (30-50%), the LVF-RH advantage was diminished. Flexible contrast gain control is needed when contrast is randomized across a wide range, but not when it is blocked or randomized across a smaller range. The results therefore suggest that the right hemisphere is able to process spatial frequency information across a wider range of contrast levels than is the left hemisphere.

Spatial frequency discrimination in schizophrenia

Pathways within the visual system can be distinguished on the basis of selectivity for low or high spatial frequencies. Spatial frequency discrimination was evaluated in 17 medicated male patients with schizophrenia and 19 male control subjects. Subjects were required to discriminate whether pairs of high contrast, sinusoidally modulated gratings were the same or different in spatial frequency. Accuracy performance was compared at high, medium, and low spatial frequencies on tasks matched for control performance. Patients showed a greater performance decrement of 12% on low as compared with 4% on high spatial frequencies. These findings suggest a disturbance of right hemisphere mechanisms involved in spatial perception and attention in schizophrenia.

Spatial-frequency discrimination, brain lateralisation, and acute intake of alcohol

The effect of alcohol (breath-alcohol level of 0.1%) on perceptual discrimination of low (1.5 cycles deg-1) and high (8 cycles deg-1) spatial frequencies in the left and right visual field was measured in eighteen right-handed males, in a double-blind, balanced placebo design. Discrimination thresholds for briefly (180 ms) presented sinusoidal gratings were determined by two-alternative forced-choice judgments with four interleaving psychophysical staircases providing random trial-to-trial variation of reference spatial frequency and visual field, in addition to a random (+/- 10%) jitter of reference spatial frequency. Alcohol produced overall higher discrimination thresholds but did not alter the visual-field balance: no main effect of visual field was observed, but in both placebo and alcohol conditions spatial frequency interacted with visual field in the direction predicted by the spatial-frequency hypothesis of hemispheric asymmetry in visual-information processing, with left-visual-field/right-hemisphere superiority in discrimination of low spatial frequencies and right-visual-field/left-hemisphere superiority in discrimination of high spatial frequencies.

Spatial frequency and right hemisphere: an electrophysiological investigation

The influence of the spatial frequency of visual stimuli on hemispheric asymmetry has been studied with visual evoked potentials (VEP). Nineteen different sinusoidal gratings (19 SF from 1 to 10 cpd) were presented in an ON-OFF mode to five right-handed subjects. The amplitude of the VEPs and the latency of the first positive component (C1) were analyzed. The results show that in the low range of spatial frequencies, the latency and the amplitude of C1 are similar in both hemispheres. At medium to high spatial frequencies, the VEPs on the right hemisphere (RH) present shorter latencies and larger amplitudes than those on the left hemisphere (LH). These results, discussed in relation to the directional differences in the time of callosal interhemispheric transfer, strengthen the idea that the RH is relatively more sensitive than the LH to the spatial component of the visual stimuli.

Hemispheric asymmetries for spatial frequency discrimination in a selective attention task

Hemispheric specialization for spatial frequency processing was investigated by measuring reaction times to sinusoidal gratings in 12 healthy subjects. Stimuli of 1.5, 3, and 6 c/deg were randomly presented at two peripheral locations in the left (LVF) and right (RVF) upper visual hemifields during a selective attention task. Subjects were instructed to pay covert attention and to respond to a frequency in a given hemifield ignoring all other stimuli. Results showed that RTs were significantly faster at LVF than RVF for low frequency gratings, and at RVF than LVF for high frequency gratings. Furthermore, RTs were faster to 6 than 1.5 c/deg at the RVF, while there was not a significant difference at the LVF. In our view, these findings in a task requiring fast and accurate spatial frequency discriminations may be interpreted in terms of a hemispheric asymmetry for spatial frequency processing.

Inhomogeneity and anisotropies for motion detection in the monocular visual field of human observers

Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) thresholds were measured for the detection of coherent motion in moving random pixel arrays of constant root-mean-square contrast (35%) and constant average luminance (48 cd/m2) for 8 or 16 directions of motion at 25 positions in the visual field of the right eye. Five observers took part in this perimetric study of motion detection. The 24 eccentric positions were chosen on 8 equally spaced radial lines at the eccentricities 6, 24, and 48 degrees, the 25th position was centred on the fovea. At these positions we analysed the threshold SNR-value as a function of motion direction alpha. A significant modulation of the threshold with alpha is called an anisotropy. Anisotropies were found for low to medium velocities at positions on and near the vertical meridian, where the thresholds proved to be highest for vertical motion directions (up or down). On the horizontal meridian no significant anisotropies were found. Also on the oblique radials anisotropies were found, especially at 225 degrees (lower nasal quadrant of the visual field, upper temporal quadrant of the retina), but these were milder than those on the vertical meridian. The diameter of the stimulus is an important parameter and its influence was explored, albeit incompletely. Also inhomogeneities were found. This is defined as a consistent modulation of the threshold SNR-value with position A, the position along an equi-eccentricity circle (A-inhomogeneity), or with eccentricity E (E-inhomogeneity) or both. A simple acuity-scaling optimized for the nasal retina takes care of most of the E-inhomogeneity, but an A-inhomogeneity stays rather prominent. It too is characterized by higher thresholds near the vertical meridian than near the horizontal meridian. The findings suggest that iso-threshold curves are elliptical or egg-shaped with their long axis on the horizontal meridian and shifted somewhat out of naso-temporal symmetry towards the nasal half of the retinal field. As with the anisotropies the inhomogeneity grows in amplitude for decreasing velocity below medium velocity values of 1-2 pixels/frame, but in contradistinction to the anisotropies it is present and even increases in amplitude for increasing velocities above these medium values of 1-2 pixels/frame as well. The results are discussed in the light of other perimetric studies of motion detection and acuity, in the light of a model postulating the cooperation of groups of velocity-tuned bilocal motion detectors, and in the light of recent ideas on structure and function of primate cortical areas and processing streams.

Visual field effects in the discrimination of sine-wave gratings

The time needed to decide whether the second of two successively presented sinusoidal gratings was of a higher or lower spatial frequency than the first was measured for spatial frequencies of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 cycles per degree (cpd) presented in either the left visual field (LVF) or right visual field (RVF). A LVF advantage was found for discriminating within the low-spatial-frequency range (i.e., 1 and 2 cpd), whereas a RVF advantage was found for discriminating within the high-spatial-frequency range (i.e., 4-12 cpd). These findings support the conclusion that hemispheric asymmetries in the processing of gratings arise when comparisons are made between the output of spatial-frequency channels.

Visual field asymmetries in pattern discrimination: a sign of asymmetry in cortical visual field representation?

A visual field asymmetry is described relative to the discrimination of mirror symmetric bars with ramp-like luminance profiles. Along the vertical meridian the discrimination is better performed for patterns oriented parallel to the meridian than for patterns oriented orthogonally at all eccentricities tested (2-8 deg). Along the horizontal meridian, the preference for radially oriented stimuli is present at 2 deg from the fovea, but vanishes at larger eccentricities. The meridional asymmetry thus revealed psychophysically may reflect asymmetries in the representation of the vertical and horizontal meridians in the human visual cortex.

Hemispheric differences are found in the identification, but not the detection, of low versus high spatial frequencies

The processing of sine-wave gratings presented to the left and right visual fields was examined in four experiments. Subjects were required either to detect the presence of a grating (Experiments 1 and 2) or to identify the spatial frequency of a grating (Experiments 3 and 4). Orthogonally to this, the stimuli were presented either at threshold levels of contrast (Experiments 1 and 3) or at suprathreshold levels (Experiments 2 and 4). Visual field and spatial frequency interacted when the task required identification of spatial frequency, but not when it required only stimulus detection. Regardless of contrast level (threshold, suprathreshold), high-frequency gratings were identified more readily in the right visual field (left hemisphere), whereas low-frequency gratings showed no visual field difference (Experiment 3) or were identified more readily in the left visual field (right hemisphere) (Experiment 4). Thus, hemispheric asymmetries in the processing of spatial frequencies depend on the task. These results support Sergent's (1982) spatial frequency hypothesis, but only when the computational demands of the task exceed those required for the simple detection of the stimuli.

Handedness and hemispheric asymmetry of pattern reversal visual-evoked potentials

Pattern reversal visual-evoked potentials (EP) from temporal leads in the two hemispheres of 26 right-handed (14 right-eye-dominant and 12 left-eye-dominant) and 10 left-handed (left-eye-dominant) adults were recorded. Checkerboard patterns (check sizes: 5.7 and 17 min of arc) at 1 and 8 Hz were reversed. Stimuli (a) subtended 6 degrees of visual field, (b) subtended 1 degree of visual field (foveal condition), and (c) were restricted to the annular portion of the visual field around the fovea (peripheral condition). Larger EP amplitudes in right or left hemisphere in relation to handedness, temporal frequency, and visual field condition were recorded. Eye dominance of dextrals appeared to play a role in determining the hemispheric asymmetry. Previous literature data and present results in relation to the hypothesis of different hemispheric specialization for basic visual information are discussed.

Contrast and hemispheric asymmetry: an electrophysiological investigation

Visual evoked potentials by 8 Hz phase-reversed sinusoidal gratings of different spatial frequency were recorded from occipital and temporal leads of left and right hemispheres. Seven adult subjects were investigated. At low contrast, the VEP amplitudes in the two hemispheres were symmetrical. At medium and high contrast, the amplitudes were larger in one hemisphere. On the contrary, the "phase advance" as a function of contrast was comparable in the two hemispheres. The results were discussed according to the literature on different neural population involved in contrast perception.

Spatial frequencies and the cerebral hemispheres: contrast sensitivity, visible persistence, and letter classification

The hypothesis that the two cerebral hemispheres are specialized for processing different visual spatial frequencies was investigated in three experiments. No differences between the left and right visual fields were found for: (1) contrast-sensitivity functions measured binocularly with vertical gratings ranging from 0.5 to 12 cycles per degree (cpd); (2) visible persistence durations for 1- and 10-cpd gratings measured with a stimulus alternation method; and (3) accuracy (d') and reaction times to correctly identify digitally filtered letters as targets (L or H) or nontargets (T or F). One significant difference, however, was found: In Experiment 3, a higher decision criterion (beta) was used when filtered letters were identified in the right visual field than when they were identified in the left. The letters were filtered with annular, 1-octave band-pass filters with center spatial frequencies of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 cpd. Combining four center frequencies with three letter sizes (0.5 degrees, 1 degree, and 2 degrees high) made some stimuli equivalent in distal spatial frequency (cycles per object) and some equivalent in proximal spatial frequency (cycles per degree). The effective stimulus in the third experiment seemed to be proximal spatial frequency (cycles per degree) not distal (cycles per object). We conclude that each cerebral hemisphere processes visual spatial frequency information with equal accuracy but that different decision rules are used.

Impaired grating discrimination following right hemisphere damage

We investigated the effect of unilateral brain lesions on visual discrimination of low-, middle- and high-frequency gratings. The performance of patients with right hemisphere lesions was significantly impaired compared with that of both controls and patients with left hemisphere lesions. This impairment was largely limited to patients with right posterior hemispheric lesions and was present with all spatial frequencies. These findings run counter to the hypothesis that high and low spatial frequencies are preferentially processed by different hemispheres.

Influence of spatial frequency and handedness on hemispheric asymmetry in visually steady-state evoked potentials

Recent suggestions on the involvement of the spatial frequency of visual stimuli in the hemispheric lateralization were investigated by recording steady-state evoked potentials in two groups of subjects: five right-handers and five left-handers. Sinusoidal gratings at spatial frequency of 0.5, 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 16 cpd were phase reversed at 4 Hz or 12 Hz. Evoked potentials recorded from temporal leads over each hemisphere were submitted to a FFT analysis. Results concern the amplitude of the fundamental component. In right-handers, the temporal frequency was the deciding factor of the lateralization: the evoked activities were greatest in the RH at 4 Hz and in the LH at 12 Hz. This effect was obvious for the range of spatial frequencies from 3-12 cpd. Results, discussed in terms of global/local information, suggested the existence of two transient and sustained systems. In left-handers, both the spatial and temporal parameters were relevant to the lateralization. A spatio-temporal interaction was observed which was reversed at 6 cpd.

Left-right visual field asymmetry in bistable motion perception

Twelve observers viewed two alternating frames, each consisting of three rectangular bars which were displaced laterally by one cycle in one frame with respect to the other. At long interframe intervals (IFIs) observers perceived a group of three elements moving as a whole (group movement), whereas with IFIs shorter than 40-60 ms the overlapping elements in each frame appeared stationary while the third element appeared to move from one end of the display to the other (end-to-end movement). The percentage of group movement responses in central viewing was compared to those obtained for stimulus presentation in the left and right visual fields (4 deg eccentricity), for opposite horizontal directions of motion. All ten right-handed subjects showed a left-field advantage in sensitivity to group movement. The two left-handed subjects showed a similar advantage in sensitivity with right-field presentation. The effects of monocular vision, hand used in the task, spatial frequency, and contrast on visual field asymmetry were all investigated in two right-handed subjects. None of these factors affected the left-right asymmetry.

Functional dissociation of the hemispheres in the discrimination of complex gratings near the vertical meridian

It was previously shown that the discrimination of complex gratings differing in the spatial phase of their harmonic components is performed more accurately when the stimuli are presented in the left than in the right visual hemifield, provided that the stimuli are separated at least 2 deg from the vertical meridian (VM) and/or their spatial frequency exceeds 2 c/deg. Here we report measurements of reaction times (RT) for the discrimination of complex gratings presented laterally at various distances from the VM. The (choice) RTs are found to be longer in the right than in the left hemifield even for stimuli of low spatial frequency at 1 deg from the VM. This rules out the possibility that a naso-temporal overlap in the retino-cortical projection in man is exploited in "bridging the gap" between the two hemispheres in the discrimination of complex gratings.

The transfer of visual information across the corpus callosum: spatial and temporal properties in the cat

1. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the visual information transmitted across the corpus callosum have been studied in normal cats by recording directly from the corpus callosum and in split-chiasm cats by means of visual evoked potentials (v.e.p.s) and single-unit recordings at the 17/18 border. 2. The modulation transfer functions (m.t.f.s) obtained by recording from the corpus callosum are comparable to the m.t.f.s evaluated by various techniques for the whole visual system of the cat. The spatial and temporal acuities, however, do not reach the values obtained behaviourally or estimated with cortical evoked potentials. 3. In split-chiasm cats, both v.e.p.s and single-unit recordings indicate that the contrast gain of the callosal pathway is considerably lower than the gain of the direct, geniculo-cortical system. Spatial and temporal acuities are lower for the callosal than for the direct system. 4. The same differences in contrast gain between the spatial m.t.f. obtained for the callosal and the direct system have been found in alert split-chiasm cats. 5. Our data suggest that the cross-talk between the hemispheres taking place across the corpus callosum is nearly abolished at low contrasts and high spatial and temporal frequencies.

Interhemispheric transfer of visual information in humans: spatial characteristics

1. The problem of the interhemispheric transfer of visual information in humans has been approached psychophysically, making use of a visual discrimination task that shows a clear left field advantage and is subject to the phenomenon of perceptual learning. 2. For this task (discrimination of complex gratings differing only by the relative spatial phase of their harmonic components) there is a left field advantage and a lack of interhemispheric transfer of learning effects at all spatial frequencies tested for stimuli removed at least 5 deg from either side of the vertical meridian. 3. For stimuli close to the vertical meridian, the left field advantage disappears and there is a complete transfer of learning effects, provided the fundamental spatial frequency is 2 cycles/deg or lower. 4. At higher spatial frequencies the left field advantage is maintained and the learning effects do not transfer from one visual hemifield to the other, even at +/- 0.5 deg from the vertical meridian, unless the contrast is very high. 5. The transfer of learning effects obtained for spatial frequencies of 2 cycles/deg or lower is peculiar to regions placed close to the vertical meridian and symmetrically located on either side of it. No transfer is obtained between non-overlapping regions on the same side of the vertical meridian. 6. These findings are consistent with an interhemispheric transfer of visual information, preferential for low spatial frequencies and high contrasts, in agreement with that found for callosal transfer in the cat (Berardi, Bisti & Maffei, 1987).

Hemispheric asymmetries in the visual evoked potentials to temporal frequency: preliminary evidence

Steady-state evoked potentials were recorded in eight adult subjects from occipital and temporal leads of both hemispheres to investigate the effect of temporal frequency on the hemispheric specialization for basic visual information. A 3 cycles deg-1 grating was phase-reversed at different temporal frequencies (from 4 to 18 Hz), and the frequency spectrum of evoked potentials was computed by means of a fast Fourier transform program. Significant results were obtained for the component at twice the temporal frequency of stimulation. Occipital evoked potentials did not show hemispheric asymmetry, whereas temporal evoked potentials showed an interaction between hemisphere and temporal frequency: right and left hemispheres were respectively prominent for low (4 and 6 Hz) and for high (8-18 Hz) temporal frequencies. The results are discussed in the context of current research on hemispheric specialization for basic spatiotemporal parameters of visual information processing.

Hemifield differences in perceived velocity

Measurements of the perceived velocity of a drifting grating were obtained as a function of the position of the grating in the visual field. Identical drifting gratings were presented at the same eccentricity in the left, right, upper, and lower hemifields, and the perceived velocities were compared. A group of ten subjects considered together showed no significant hemifield differences in perceived velocity. However, some individual subjects showed marked and systematic hemifield differences, the directions of which varied among the subjects. There were no hemifield differences in susceptibility to adaptation to moving gratings.

Visual half-field symmetry in orientation perception

The perception of orientation in the left and right visual half-fields has been investigated. No evidence for interfield differences was obtained for the discrimination of single lines by line matching or in magnitude of the systematic orientation distortion in orientation contrast and rod-and-frame experiments. Furthermore, increasing the time interval between test and comparison lines in successive matching provides no evidence for a differential operation of short-term spatial memory in the two hemispheres. It is concluded that hemispheric asymmetries do not arise at the level of sensory processing of spatial signals.
