Awareness and Stimulus-Driven Spatial Attention as Independent Processes

To investigate the relation between attention and awareness, we manipulated visibility/awareness and stimulus-driven attention capture among metacontrast-masked visual stimuli. By varying the time interval between target and mask, we manipulated target visibility measured as target discrimination accuracies (ACCs; Experiments 1 and 2) and as subjective awareness ratings (Experiment 3). To modulate stimulus-driven attention capture, we presented the masked target either as a color-singleton (the target stands out by its unique color among homogeneously colored non-singletons), as a non-singleton together with a distractor singleton elsewhere (an irrelevant distractor has a unique color, whereas the target is colored like the other stimuli) or without a singleton (no stimulus stands out; only in Experiment 1). As color singletons capture attention in a stimulus-driven way, we expected target visibility/discrimination performance to be best for target singletons and worst with distractor singletons. In Experiments 1 and 2, we confirmed that the masking interval and the singleton manipulation influenced ACCs in an independent way and that attention capture by the singletons, with facilitated performance in target-singleton compared to distractor-singleton conditions, was found regardless of the interval-induced (in-)visibility of the targets. In Experiment 1, we also confirmed that attention capture was the same among participants with worse and better visibility/discrimination performance. In Experiment 2, we confirmed attention capture by color singletons with better discrimination performance for probes presented at singleton position, compared to other positions. Finally, in Experiment 3, we found that attention capture by target singletons also increased target awareness and that this capture effect on subjective awareness was independent of the effect of the masking interval, too. Together, results provide new evidence that stimulus-driven attention and awareness operate independently from one another and that stimulus-driven attention capture can precede awareness.

Temporal processes in prime-mask interaction: Assessing perceptual consequences of masked information

Visual backward masking is frequently used to study the temporal dynamics of visual perception. These dynamics may include the temporal features of conscious percepts, as suggested, for instance, by the asynchronous-updating model (Neumann, 1982) and perceptual-retouch theory ((Bachmann, 1994). These models predict that the perceptual latency of a visual backward mask is shorter than that of a like reference stimulus that was not preceded by a masked stimulus. The prediction has been confirmed by studies using temporal-order judgments: For certain asynchronies between mask and reference stimulus, temporal-order reversals are quite frequent (e.g. Scharlau, & Neumann, 2003a). However, it may be argued that these reversals were due to a response bias in favour of the mask rather than true temporal-perceptual effects. I introduce two measures for assessing latency effects that (1) are not prone to such a response bias, (2) allow to quantify the latency gain, and (3) extend the perceptual evidence from order reversals to duration/interval perception, that is, demonstrate that the perceived interval between a mask and a reference stimulus may be shortened as well as prolonged by the presence of a masked stimulus. Consequences for theories of visual masking such as asynchronous-updating, perceptual-retouch, and reentrant models are discussed.

Visual backward masking: Modeling spatial and temporal aspects

In modeling visual backward masking, the focus has been on temporal effects. More specifically, an explanation has been sought as to why strongest masking can occur when the mask is delayed with respect to the target. Although interesting effects of the spatial layout of the mask have been found, only a few attempts have been made to model these phenomena. Here, we elaborate a structurally simple model which employs lateral excitation and inhibition together with different neural time scales to explain many spatial and temporal aspects of backward masking. We argue that for better understanding of visual masking, it is vitally important to consider the interplay of spatial and temporal factors together in one single model.

An analysis of visual masking, with a defense of 'Stopped Processing'

The use of a backward mask (a patterned mask which follows the target in time) to ‘stop the processing’ of the target illustrates an important application of masking – the study of the ‘microgenesis’ of visual perception, that is, visual processing over about the first one-fifth of a second. This paper provides evidence for stopped processing and some applications of this to object recognition and letter detection. The paper also discusses the notion of an ‘active filter’ which may help to account for Type-A masking but at best can only account for Type-B masking in part. I conclude that masking, while illuminating various areas of vision science, is under-utilized, perhaps because the theoretical justification for such masking is still uncertain, and perhaps because of the care needed to establish that the mask does indeed ‘stop’ processing.

The influence of color on transient system activity: implications for dyslexia research

Metacontrast and apparent motion experiments designed to utilize transient system resources were adopted to investigate the proposal that transient system activity is differentially influenced by different colored stimuli. The results generally showed no effect of color on transient system activity in either adults or children. However, the predicted pattern of results was demonstrated when contrast rather than color was manipulated in a final metacontrast experiment. We discuss the tenuousness of the proposal that color differentially influences transient activity, exploring its physiological implications and its durability as a theory of transient activity regarding reading-disability research.

Motion and metacontrast with simultaneous onset of stimuli

Coherent directional motion can be seen if an image is displayed in two sequential frames (F1 and F2), where F2 is a translated version of F1. A similar two-frame sequence can produce metacontrast masking: the visibility of a leading target (F1) is reduced by a trailing, spatially nonoverlapping mask (F2). Strict temporal succession of the stimuli has been considered essential for both motion and masking. This requirement for a minimum stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA) is known as the SOA law. Contrary to the SOA law, we found that motion and masking can be obtained with simultaneous onsets of the stimuli, provided that F2 outlasts F1. We compared motion and metacontrast with simultaneous onsets of the stimuli (SIM paradigm) with the traditional paradigm in which an interstimulus interval (ISI) is inserted between the leading and the trailing stimuli (ISI paradigm). We studied the effects in light-adapted and in dark-adapted viewing, each over a wide range of stimulus intensities. Homologous results were obtained with the two paradigms, thus disconfirming the SOA law. Models of motion sensors, such as that proposed by Reichardt [in Sensory Communication, W. A. Rosenblith, ed. (MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1961), p. 303], are inherently capable of explaining the motion results obtained with both paradigms. The masking results with the SIM paradigm disconfirm theories based on onset-locked slow excitatory and fast inhibitory responses but can be explained in terms of Bridgeman's network model [Bull. Math. Biol. 40, 605 (1978)]. In light of the results obtained with the two paradigms, we discuss, and tentatively support, the suggestion that motion and metacontrast may be complementary parts of a unitary perceptual system.

A microgenetic study of the Müller-Lyer illusion

In two experiments a decomposed Müller-Lyer pattern was used to measure the time course of the illusion. A partial report procedure was used to prevent the subjects from focusing only on parts of the pattern and to maximize visual processing. The Müller-Lyer figure was decomposed into two parts, its angles and its line. A configuration of three pairs of angles, each corresponding to a row in the usual partial report arrangement, was used. A line that did or did not fit the gap was shown with a variable delay (interstimulus interval, ISI). By this procedure the relevant row (line gap) was cued. The subject had to decide whether the line fitted or was too short/long. Two exposure times for the angles were used, 50 or 200 ms in one experiment and 50 or 500 ms in the other. The result of the first experiment, with outward-pointing fins, was a stable illusion for all values of ISI (25-400 ms) and all exposure times, with one significant exception: exposure for 50 ms with an ISI of 50 ms yielded an illusion peak. It was shown that this was not caused by a reduction in length-discrimination performance. In the second experiment, with inward-pointing fins, no such peak occurred. There was only a tendency for the illusion to vanish with zero ISI. The results are discussed with respect to 'global to local' theories of visual processing.

Effects of isoluminant-background color on metacontrast and stroboscopic motion: interactions between sustained (P) and transient (M) channels

The magnitudes of metacontrast masking and of stroboscopic motion were investigated as a function of the color of isoluminant backgrounds on which the stimuli consisting of rectangular-shaped luminance decrements appeared. White, green, and red backgrounds were employed. Background isoluminance was obtained by minimal flicker settings with heterochromatic flicker of uniform fields. Both metacontrast and stroboscopic motion were decreased when red as compared to white or green backgrounds were used. Within the context of current sustained-transient channel approaches to visual masking and motion, these results indicate that the activity of transient channels is attenuated by red relative to white or green backgrounds. Moreover, these psychophysical findings may correspond to the suppressive effects of diffuse red light on neural activity in the transient M pathway of monkey.

The variety of relations between spatial frequency and reaction time

While stimuli of lower spatial frequency often result in faster responses, this is not invariably the case. Some individuals respond faster to high frequency stimuli on tasks for which most others respond faster to low frequency stimuli. Past experience can also determine the degree to which a low frequency stimulus will mask a high frequency stimulus. These observations suggest that the effects of spatial frequency on visual information processing are under the control of higher level cognitive operations.
