Abstract
The synthesis of a macrocyclic Ru carbene catalyst for selective cross alkene metathesis is reported. The new catalyst showed different reactivity for various type 1 alkenes in homodimerization which correlated with the aggregrate size of the allylic substituent. The altered reactivity profile allowed for selective product formation in competition cross alkene metathesis between two different type 1 alkenes and tert-butyl acrylate. Selectivity in these reactions is attributed to the ability of the macrocyclic catalyst to differentiate alkenes based on their size. Two preparative examples of cross metathesis with the macrocyclic catalyst are also provided.

Abstract
This feature article summarises recent contributions of the authors in the area of anion-induced supramolecular self-assembly. It is based on the chemistry of a set of tetracationic imidazolium macrocycles, specifically the so-called 'Texas-sized' molecular box, cyclo[2](2,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridine)[2](1,4-dimethylenebenzene) (14+), and its congeners, cyclo[2](2,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridine)[2](1,2-dimethylenebenzene) (24+), cyclo[2](2,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridine)[2](1,3-dimethylenebenzene) (34+), and cyclo[2](2,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridine)[2](2,6-dimethylenepyridine) (44+). These systems collectively have been demonstrated as being versatile building blocks that interact with organic carboxylate or sulfonate anions, as well as substrates (e.g., neutral molecules or metal cations). Most work to date has been carried out with 14+, a system that has been found to support the construction of a number of stimuli responsive self-assembled ensembles. This macrocycle and others of the 'Texas-sized' box family also show the potential to react as carbene precursors and to undergo post-synthetic modification (PSM) to produce new functional macrocycles, such as trans- and cis-cyclo[2]((Z)-N-(2-((6-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridin-2-yl)amino)vinyl)formamide)[2](1,4-bismethylbenzene) (52+ and 62+, respectively). On the basis of the work reviewed in this Feature article, we propose that the imidazolium macrocycles 14+-44+ can be considered as useful tools for the construction of ensembles with environmentally responsive features, including control over self-assembly and an ability to undergo precursor-specific PSM.

Abstract
Three 3D imidazole or benzimidazole-bearing cages as trivalent cationic templates react with metal (pseudo)halides or polyoxometalates to obtain a series of different organic–inorganic hybrids in which the cages exhibit breathing behavior of expansion and contraction.

Abstract
Detailed investigations of a photocatalytic system capable of producing hydrogen under pre-catalytic aerobic conditions are reported. This system consists of the NHC precursor chromophore [Ru(tbbpy)2 (RR'ip)][PF6 ]3 (abbreviated as Ru(RR'ip)[PF6 ]3 ; tbbpy=4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, RR'ip=1,3-disubstituted-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolinium), the reduction catalyst Co(dmgH)2 (dmgH=dimethylglyoximato), and the electron donor ascorbic acid (AA). Screening studies with respect to solvent, cobaloxime catalyst, electron donor, pH, and concentrations of the individual components yielded optimized photocatalytic conditions. The system shows high activity based on Ru, with turnover numbers up to 2000 under oxygen-free and pre-catalytic aerobic conditions. The turnover frequency in the latter case was even higher than that for the oxygen-free catalyst system. The Ru complexes show high photostability and their first excited state is primarily located on the RR'ip ligand. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the rigid cyclophane-type ligand dd(ip)2 (Br)2 (dd(ip)2 =1,1',3,3'-bis(2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)bis(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolinium)) and the catalytic activity of its Ru complex [{(tbbpy)2 Ru}2 (μ-dd(ip)2 )][PF6 ]6 (abbreviated as Ru2 (dd(ip)2 )[PF6 ]6 ) suggest an intermolecular catalytic cycle.

Abstract
The complexation of coinage metal cations with [2.2.2]paracyclophane and deltaphane has been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing the PBE0-D3 hybrid functional, which incorporates explicit dispersion corrections to account for the weak intermolecular forces that are important in the systems studied. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses, Bader's Atoms in Molecules theory analyses as well as localised molecular orbital – energy decomposition analyses (LMO-EDAs) have been carried out to further investigate the electronic structure and bonding of the complexes. It was found that both cyclophanes bind strongest with gold ions, followed closely by copper ions and lastly silver ions. The two fragments interact in a non-covalent fashion in these complexes and the metal preferentially resides at the periphery of the molecular cavity of the cyclophane.

Abstract
Eight dinuclear Au(i)-carbene complexes have been synthesized from various imidazolium-linked cyclophanes and related acyclic bis(imidazolium) salts, by treatment of the imidazolium salts with [Au(i)(SMe(2))Cl] in the presence of a carboxylate base. Single crystal structural studies showed that the Au(i)-carbene compounds contain dinuclear (AuL)(2) cations in which a pair of gold(i) centres are linked by a pair of bridging dicarbenoid ligands. Interestingly, the structural studies revealed short AuAu contacts of 3.0485(3)[Angstrom] and 3.5425(6)[Angstrom] in two of these complexes. NMR studies showed that the (AuL)(2) cations constructed from the cyclophane-based ligands retain a relatively rigid structure in solution, whilst those of the non-cyclophane ligand systems are fluxional in solution. The electronic absorption and emission spectra of the complexes in solution at room temperature were recorded and the complex with the shortest AuAu contact was found to emit intensely at 400 nm and more weakly at 780 nm upon excitation at 260 nm. The compounds with longer AuAu separations were not emissive under these conditions.

Abstract
A series of novel D-glucose derived bis-imidazoles and their analogs, which possess potential in bioorganic and supramolecular chemistry, were designed and synthesized from methyl alpha-D-glucoside through protection, bis-bromination, N-alkylation and deprotection. All new compounds were characterized by HRMS, 1H, 13C and DEPT NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The 1H-(1)H and 1H-(13)C 2D NMR spectra for some compounds were also recorded. Some regular features of 13C and 1H NMR spectra were summarized. The anticancer activity of some compounds was evaluated.
