An annotated and illustrated identification guide to common mesophotic reef sponges (Porifera, Demospongiae, Hexactinellida, and Homoscleromorpha) inhabiting Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary and vicinities

Sponges are recognized as a diverse and abundant component of mesophotic and deep-sea ecosystems worldwide. In Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary region within the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, sponges thrive among diverse biological and geological habitats between 16-200+ m deep (i.e., coral reefs and communities, algal nodules, and coralline algae reefs, mesophotic reefs, patch reefs, scarps, ridges, soft substrate, and rocky outcrops). A synoptic guide is presented, developed by studying common sponge species in the region, through direct sampling and in-situ photographic records. A total of 64 species is included: 60 are Demospongiae (14 orders), two are Hexactinellida (one order), and two are Homoscleromorpha (one order). Thirty-four taxa are identified to species and 13 were identified to have affinity with, but were not identical to, a known species. Fifteen taxa could only be identified to genus level, and the species remain as uncertain (incerta sedis), with the potential to represent new species or variants of known species. One specimen received only a family assignation. This study extends geographic or mesophotic occurrence data for eleven known species and includes several potentially new species. This work improves our knowledge of Gulf of Mexico sponge biodiversity and highlights the importance of the region for scientists and resource managers.

Sponges present a core prokaryotic community stable across Tropical Western Atlantic

Sponges are among the earliest lineages of metazoans, with first fossil records dated back to 890 million years ago. All sponge species present associations with microorganisms to some extension, which influence sponges' survival and adaptation. Sponge species can be divided into two categories, Low Microbial Abundance and High Microbial Abundance, depending on the abundance of the microbial community that they host. Monanchora arbuscula (a Low Microbial Abundance sponge species) and Xestospongia muta (a High Microbial Abundance sponge species) are sponges with widespread distribution in the Tropical Western Atlantic. Despite previous studies on the major features of these species, little is known whether M. arcuscula and X. muta prokaryotic communities are stable across vast geographic regions. We obtained a total of ~9.26 million 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequences for M. arbuscula samples collected at seven locations and for X. muta samples collected at three locations, corresponding to five ecoregions of the Caribbean and the Southwestern Atlantic (N = 105, 39 from M. arcuscula and 66 from X. muta). These samples reflected different ecological strategies for prokaryotic communities assembly, since the core prokaryotic communities of M. arbuscula are more heterotrophic and shared with different sources (corals, sponges, seawater, sediments), while X. muta has more significant photosynthetic prokaryotic communities, mainly outsourced from other sponges. Results of M. arbuscula and X. muta prokaryotic communities analysis demonstrate that both sponge species have core prokaryotic communities stable across a vast geographic area (> 8000 km), and the world's most notable coastal marine biogeographic filter, the Amazon River Mouth, in spite of the significant differences found among transient prokaryotic communities of both sponge species.

Anticancer Potential of Compounds from the Brazilian Blue Amazon

"Blue Amazon" is used to designate the Brazilian Economic Exclusive Zone, which covers an area comparable in size to that of its green counterpart. Indeed, Brazil flaunts a coastline spanning 8000 km through tropical and temperate regions and hosting part of the organisms accredited for the country's megadiversity status. Still, biodiversity may be expressed at different scales of organization; besides species inventory, genetic characteristics of living beings and metabolic expression of their genes meet some of these other layers. These metabolites produced by terrestrial creatures traditionally and lately added to by those from marine organisms are recognized for their pharmaceutical value, since over 50% of small molecule-based medicines are related to natural products. Nonetheless, Brazil gives a modest contribution to the field of pharmacology and even less when considering marine pharmacology, which still lacks comprehensive in-depth assessments toward the bioactivity of marine compounds so far. Therefore, this review examined the last 40 years of Brazilian natural products research, focusing on molecules that evidenced anticancer potential-which represents ~ 15% of marine natural products isolated from Brazilian species. This review discusses the most promising compounds isolated from sponges, cnidarians, ascidians, and microbes in terms of their molecular targets and mechanisms of action. Wrapping up, the review delivers an outlook on the challenges that stand against developing groundbreaking natural products research in Brazil and on a means of surpassing these matters.
