Abstract
Human glycans are primarily composed of nine common sugar building blocks. On the other hand, several hundred monosaccharides have been discovered in bacteria and most of them are not readily available. The ability to access these rare sugars and the corresponding glycoconjugates can facilitate the studies of various fundamentally important biological processes in bacteria, including interactions between microbiota and the human host. Many rare sugars also exist in a variety of natural products and pharmaceutical reagents with significant biological activities. Although several methods have been developed for the synthesis of rare monosaccharides, most of them involve lengthy steps. Herein, we report an efficient and general strategy that can provide access to rare sugars from commercially available common monosaccharides via a one-step Ru(II)-catalyzed and boron-mediated selective epimerization of 1,2-trans-diols to 1,2-cis-diols. The formation of boronate esters drives the equilibrium toward 1,2-cis-diol products, which can be immediately used for further selective functionalization and glycosylation. The utility of this strategy was demonstrated by the efficient construction of glycoside skeletons in natural products or bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Herein we report on the development and application of chemoenzymatic Dynamic Kinetic Asymmetric Transformation (DYKAT) of α-substituted β-hydroxyketones (β-HKs), using Candida antartica lipase B (CALB) as transesterification catalyst and a ruthenium complex as epimerization catalyst. An operationally simple protocol allows for an efficient preparation of highly enantiomerically enriched α-substituted β-oxoacetates. The products were obtained in yields up to 95 % with good diastereomeric ratios.

Abstract
Dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (DYKAT) reactions of racemic diastereomer mixtures that afford the products as essentially single diastereomers with high enantioselectivities are described. We demonstrated the DYKAT in the diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of spirooxindoles bearing furan-fused rings. The starting materials of the DYKAT, dihydrobenzofuranone derivatives, were synthesized in racemic diastereomer mixtures, and these were transformed to the spirooxindole derivatives in high yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities through Michael-Henry cascade reactions with nitrostyrenes under organocatalytic conditions. In the reactions, regardless the stereochemistry of the starting materials, all the four isomers were transformed to single diastereomers with high enantioselectivities, and four new chiral centers were created.

Abstract
Hydrogen transfer initiated processes are eco-compatible transformations allowing the reversible OFF ↔ ON activation of otherwise unreactive substrates. The minimization of stoichiometric waste as well as the unique activation modes provided by these transformations make them key players for a greener future for organic synthesis. Long limited to catalytic reactions that form racemic products, considerable progress on the development of strategies for controlling diastereo- and enantioselectivity has been made in the last decade. The aim of this review is to present the different strategies that enable enantioselective transformations of this type and to highlight how they can be used to construct key synthetic building blocks in fewer operations with less waste generation.

Abstract
The first dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation of racemic biaryl substrates on the basis of axial-to-central chirality transfer has been realized. Chiral Pd-NHC complexes were found to catalyze the dynamic kinetic asymmetric spiroannulation of 4-(2-bromoaryl)-naphthalen-1-ols (or 2'-bromo-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-ols) with internal alkynes, affording a series of enantioenriched spirocyclic products bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter in good yields (up to 95%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee).

Abstract
A practical procedure for the enzymatic resolution of 2-alkyl-2-aryl-disubstituted epoxides using the Codex HHDH P2E2 enzyme and sodium azide is reported. This method allowed the synthesis of novel regio- and enantioselective 1-azido-2-arylpropan-2-ols in excellent yields. Furthermore, these intermediates were used for the preparation of enantiomerically enriched amino alcohols and aziridines containing a tertiary center.

Abstract
The first examples of one-pot highly chemo- and enantioselective dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations (DYKATs) involving alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and propargylated carbon acids are presented. These DYKATs, which proceed by a combination of catalytic iminium activation, enamine activation, and Pd(0)-catalyzed enyne cycloisomerization, give access to functionalized cyclopentenes with up to 99 % ee and can be used for the generation of all-carbon quaternary stereocenters.

Abstract
The scope and limitation of the combined ruthenium-lipase induced dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) through O-acetylation of racemic heteroaromatic secondary alcohols, i.e., 1-heteroaryl substituted ethanols, was investigated. After initial screening of reaction conditions, Candida antarctica lipase B (Novozyme 435, N435) together with 4-chloro-phenylacetate as acetyl-donor for kinetic resolution (KR), in conjunction with the ruthenium-based Shvo catalyst for substrate racemization in toluene at 80 degrees C, enabled DKR with high yields and stereoselectivity of various 1-heteroaryl ethanols, such as oxadiazoles, isoxazoles, 1H-pyrazole, or 1H-imidazole. In addition, DFT calculations based on a simplified catalyst complex model for the catalytic (de)hydrogenation step are in agreement with the previously reported outer sphere mechanism. These results support the further understanding of the mechanistic aspects behind the difference in reactivity of 1-heteroaryl substituted ethanols in comparison to reference substrates, as often referred to in the literature.

Abstract
The isolation of single stereoisomers from a racemic (or diastereomeric) mixture by enzymatic or chemical resolution techniques goes in hand with the disposal of 50% (racemate) or more (diastereomeric mixtures) of the "undesired" substrate isomer(s). In order to circumvent this drawback, dynamic systems have been developed for the de-racemization of enantiomers and the de-epimerizations of diastereomers. Key strategies within this area are discussed and are classified according to their underlying kinetics, that is, dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR), dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations (DYKAT), and hybrids between both of them. Finally, two novel types of DYKAT are defined.

Abstract
Hexose sugars play a fundamental role in vital biochemical processes and their biosynthesis is achieved through enzyme-catalyzed pathways. Herein we disclose the ability of amino acids to catalyze the asymmetric neogenesis of carbohydrates by sequential cross-aldol reactions. The amino acids mediate the asymmetric de novo synthesis of natural L- and D-hexoses and their analogues with excellent stereoselectivity in organic solvents. In some cases, the four new stereocenters are assembled with almost absolute stereocontrol. The unique feature of these results is that, when an amino acid is employed as the catalyst, a single reaction sequence can convert a protected glycol aldehyde into a hexose in one step. For example, proline and its derivatives catalyze the asymmetric neogenesis of allose with >99 % ee in one chemical manipulation. Furthermore, all amino acids tested catalyzed the asymmetric formation of natural sugars under prebiotic conditions, with alanine being the smallest catalyst. The inherent simplicity of this catalytic process suggests that a catalytic prebiotic "gluconeogenesis" may occur, in which amino acids transfer their stereochemical information to sugars. In addition, the amino acid catalyzed stereoselective sequential cross-aldol reactions were performed as a two-step procedure with different aldehydes as acceptors and nucleophiles. The employment of two different amino acids as catalysts for the iterative direct aldol reactions enabled the asymmetric synthesis of deoxysugars with >99 % ee. In addition, the direct amino acid catalyzed C(2)+C(2)+C(2) methodology is a new entry for the short, highly enantioselective de novo synthesis of carbohydrate derivatives, isotope-labeled sugars, and polyketide natural products. The one-pot asymmetric de novo syntheses of deoxy and polyketide carbohydrates involved a novel dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (DYKAT) mediated by an amino acid.

Abstract
Highly efficient synthesis of enantiopure diacetates of 2,4-pentanediol and 2,5-hexanediol starting from commercially available mixtures of the diols (dl/meso approximately 1:1) has been realized by combining a fast ruthenium-catalyzed epimerization with an enzymatic transesterification. The in situ coupling of these two processes produces the diacetates in high yield in >99 % enantiomeric excess.

Abstract
Enantiomerically pure 1,3-diols 1-3 were obtained by a chemoenzymatic approach (lipase PS from Burkholderia cepacia). These diols were converted into useful chiral synthons, which could be considered homologues of glyceraldehyde and glyceric acid acetonides. Applications of these synthons to the de novo synthesis of sugars and preparation of conagenin carboxylic moiety were shown. Hydroxy ketone 4 was chosen as a model system for another synthetic evolution: it was obtained in enantiomerically pure form by enzymatic resolution and converted into chiral tetrahydropyranes, such as the stereoisomers of the commercial fragrance Gyrane.
