Search for ferromagnetic order in overdoped copper-oxide superconductors

In copper-oxides that show high-temperature superconductivity (HTS), the critical temperature (T_c) has a dome-shaped doping dependence. The cause of demise of both T_c and superfluid density n_s on the overdoped side is a major puzzle. A recent study of transport and diamagnetism in a large number of overdoped La_2−xSr_xCuO₄ (LSCO) films shows that this cannot be accounted for by disorder within the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. This brings to focus an alternative explanation — competition of HTS with ferromagnetic order, fluctuating in superconducting samples and static beyond the superconductor-to-metal transition. Here, we examine this proposal by growing single-crystal LSCO thin films with doping on both sides of the transition by molecular beam epitaxy, and using polarized neutron reflectometry to measure their magnetic moments. In a heavily overdoped, metallic but non-superconducting LSCO (x = 0.35) film, the spin asymmetry of reflectivity shows a very small static magnetic moment (~2 emu/cm³). Less-doped, superconducting LSCO films show no magnetic moment in neutron reflectivity, both above and below T_c. Therefore, the collapse of HTS with overdoping is not caused by competing ferromagnetic order.

Chern structure in the Bose-insulating phase of Sr2RuO4 nanofilms

The quantum anomaly that breaks the symmetry, for example the parity and the chirality, in the quantization leads to a physical quantity with a topological Chern invariant. We report the observation of a Chern structure in the Bose-insulating phase of Sr₂RuO₄ nanofilms by employing electric transport. We observed the superconductor-to-insulator transition by reducing the thickness of Sr₂RuO₄ single crystals. The appearance of a gap structure in the insulating phase implies local superconductivity. Fractional quantized conductance was observed without an external magnetic field. We found an anomalous induced voltage with temperature and thickness dependence, and the induced voltage exhibited switching behavior when we applied a magnetic field. We suggest that there was fractional magnetic-field-induced electric polarization in the interlayer. These anomalous results are related to topological invariance. The fractional axion angle Θ = π/6 was determined by observing the topological magneto-electric effect in the Bose-insulating phase of Sr₂RuO₄ nanofilms.

Carriers for the tunable release of therapeutics: etymological classification and examples

Introduction Physiological processes at the molecular level take place at precise spatiotemporal scales, which vary from tissue to tissue and from one patient to another, implying the need for carriers that enable tunable release of therapeutics. Tunability is defined as analogous to tuning a guitar string or a radio receiver to the right frequency using a single knob. Examples of tunable, tailorable and environmentally responsive carriers are given, along with the parameters used to achieve these levels of control. Expert opinion Interdependence of multiple variables defining the carrier microstructure obstructs the attempts to elucidate parameters that allow for the independent tuning of release kinetics. Learning from the tunability of nanostructured materials and superstructured metamaterials can be a fruitful source of inspiration in the quest for the new generation of tunable release carriers. The greater intersection of traditional materials sciences and pharmacokinetic perspectives could foster the development of more sophisticated mechanisms for tunable release.
