Hydration-reduced lattice thermal conductivity of olivine in Earth's upper mantle

Anisotropic thermal conductivity of antigorite along slab subduction impacts seismicity of intermediate-depth earthquakes

Double seismic zones (DSZs) are a feature of some subducting slabs, where intermediate-depth earthquakes (~70-300 km) align along two separate planes. The upper seismic plane is generally attributed to dehydration embrittlement, whereas mechanisms forming the lower seismic plane are still debated. Thermal conductivity of slab minerals is expected to control the temperature evolution of subducting slabs, and therefore their seismicity. However, effects of the potential anisotropic thermal conductivity of layered serpentine minerals with crystal preferred orientation on slab's thermal evolution remain poorly understood. Here we measure the lattice thermal conductivity of antigorite, a hydrous serpentine mineral, along its crystallographic b- and c-axis at relevant high pressure-temperature conditions of subduction. We find that antigorite's thermal conductivity along the c-axis is ~3-4 folds smaller than the b-axis. Our numerical models further reveal that when the low-thermal-conductivity c-axis is aligned normal to the slab dip, antigorite's strongly anisotropic thermal conductivity enables heating at the top portion of the slab, facilitating dehydration embrittlement that causes the seismicity in the upper plane of DSZs. Potentially, the antigorite's thermal insulating effect also hinders the dissipation of frictional heat inside shear zones, promoting thermal runaway along serpentinized faults that could trigger intermediate-depth earthquakes.

Crustal melting in orogenic belts revealed by eclogite thermal properties

Partial melting in the continental crust may play a critical role on the behavior of continents during collision. However, the occurrence of partial melt in orogenic continental crust is not well understood. Since the temperature of the orogen is controlled by the thermal properties of constituent rocks, we measured the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of eclogite, the most important ultrahigh pressure metamorphic rocks, as a function of pressure, temperature, composition, and water content, and simulated the thermal structure of the Sulu and Himalaya-Tibet orogens in eastern and southwestern China, respectively. Our results show that the temperature at ~30-km depth beneath the orogens reaches the solidus of wet granite and phengite (~940 K), therefore, the partial melting in the orogenic continental crust is well explained. The melt may facilitate the exhumation of subducted crust, produce the low seismic-velocity zone, and cause the high-conductivity anomaly in the shallow depth of orogenic belts.

By measuring the thermal properties of eclogite at high pressures, the authors found that temperature of orogenic continental crust is sufficient to melt granite and phengite, leading to low-velocity and high-conductivity anomalies in orogenic belts.

Thermal Transport Properties of Olivine, Wadsleyite, and Ringwoodite—A Review

Knowledge of the thermal diffusivity D and thermal conductivity κ of olivine and its high-pressure polymorphs, wadsleyite and ringwoodite, is crucial to understand the heat transfer efficiency and thermal structure of Earth’s mantle. In the last few decades, great progress has been made in measurement techniques and experimental results seeking to determine the thermophysical properties of geomaterials. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic overview of the current knowledge of the thermal transport properties of olivine and its high-pressure polymorphs, their dependence on factors, such as pressure, temperature, and composition, and physical models to describe their variations. Some related geoscience applications and perspectives for the future are also suggested.

In situ Infrared Spectra for Hydrous Forsterite up to 1243 K: Hydration Effect on Thermodynamic Properties

Hydrogen substitution has significant effect on the physical properties of olivine, the most abundant mineral in the upper mantle. We collected high-temperature polarized Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectra on hydrous forsterite (Mg-pure olivine) crystals, which were synthesized at 12 GPa, 1473–1673 K. The modes at 3612, 3578, 3566, 3551 cm−1 show comparable negative temperature dependence, and the magnitude of (∂vi/∂T)P decreases dramatically with frequency increasing. Whereas, the peak at 3477 cm−1, which is attributed to protonation along the O1...O2 edge on the Si tetrahedron, has a positive temperature dependence. The absorbance intensities of all these OH bands remained almost the same when quenched to room temperature. On the other hand, we also evaluate the hydration effect on the thermodynamic properties (heat capacities). For the anhydrous forsterite sample, the intrinsic anharmonicity could significantly increase the heat capacity by 5~6% when extrapolated to 2000 K. Hydration further increase such difference to ~9%, in both the cases of M-substitution or Si-substitution. Hence, hydration in olivine has significant impact on the anharmonic contribution to the thermodynamic properties, as well as Equations of State and equilibrium isotope fractionation β-factor at high-P,T conditions in the deep mantle.
