Time-dependent view of an isotope effect in electron-nuclear nonequilibrium dynamics with applications to N2

Nonadiabatic quantum dynamics explores non-monotonic photodissociation branching of N2 into the N(4S) + N(2D) and N(4S) + N(2P) product channels

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photodissociation of N2 molecules is a source of reactive N atoms in the interstellar medium. In the energy range of VUV optical excitation of N2, the N-N triple bond cleavage leads to three types of atoms: ground-state N(4S) and excited-state N(2P) and N(2D). The latter is the highest reactive and it is believed to be the primary participant in reactions with hydrocarbons in Titan's atmosphere. Experimental studies have observed a non-monotonic energy dependence and non-statistical character of the photodissociation of N2. This implies different dissociation pathways and final atomic products for different wavelength regions in the sunlight spectrum. We here apply ab initio quantum chemical and nonadiabatic quantum dynamical techniques to follow the path of an electronic state from the excitation of a particular singlet 1Σ+u and 1Πu vibronic level of N2 to its dissociation into different atomic products. We simulate dynamics for two isotopomers of the nitrogen molecule, 14N2 and 14N15N for which experimental data on the branching are available. Our computations capture the non-monotonic energy dependence of the photodissociation branching ratios in the energy range 108 000-116 000 cm-1. Tracing the quantum dynamics in a bunch of electronic states enables us to identify the key components that determine the efficacy of singlet to triplet population transfer and therefore predissociation lifetimes and branching ratios for different energy regions.

Effects of Autoionizing Resonances on Wave-Packet Dynamics Studied by Time-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the effect of autoionizing resonances in time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The coherent excitation of N_{2} by ∼14.15  eV extreme-ultraviolet photons prepares a superposition of three dominant adjacent vibrational levels (v^{'}=14-16) in the valence b^{'} ^{1}Σ_{u}^{+} state, which are probed by the absorption of two or three near-infrared photons (800 nm). The superposition manifests itself as coherent oscillations in the measured photoelectron spectra. A quantum-mechanical simulation confirms that two autoionizing Rydberg states converging to the excited A ^{2}Π_{u} and B ^{2}Σ_{u}^{+} N_{2}^{+} cores are accessed by the resonant absorption of near-infrared photons. We show that these resonances apply different filters to the observation of the vibrational wave packet, which results in different phases and amplitudes of the oscillating photoelectron signal depending on the nature of the autoionizing resonance. This work clarifies the importance of resonances in time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and particularly reveals the phase of vibrational quantum beats as a powerful observable for characterizing the properties of such resonances.

Few-Femtosecond Isotope Effect in Polyatomic Molecules Ionized by Extreme Ultraviolet Attosecond Pulse Trains

Following ionization by an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse train, a polyatomic molecule can be promoted to more-than-one excited states of the residual ion. The ensuing relaxation dynamics is often facilitated by several reaction coordinates, making them difficult to disentangle by the usual spectroscopic means. Here, we show that in atto-chemistry isotope labeling can be an efficient tool for unraveling the relaxation pathways in highly excited photoionized molecules. Employing an XUV pump pulse and a near-infrared probe pulse, we found the nuclear as well as coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in ethylene to be almost 40% faster compared to that of its deuterated counterpart. The findings, which are supported by advanced nonadiabatic dynamics calculations, led to the identification of the relevant nuclear coordinates controlling the relaxation. Our experiment highlights the relevance of ultrashort XUV pulses to capture the isotopic effect in few-femtosecond molecular photodynamics.

Electronic Coherences Steer the Strong Isotope Effect in the Ultrafast Jahn-Teller Structural Rearrangement of Methane Cation upon Tunnel Ionization

We report on fully quantum electronic-nuclear dynamics following sudden ionization from the neutral in the three lowest electronic states of the CH₄⁺ and CD₄⁺ cations. There is a strong Jahn-Teller effect in the Franck-Condon region, and we employ two nuclear degrees of freedom that span the internal coordinates involved in the Jahn-Teller coupling. The initial state results from tunneling ionization by a strong IR field which coherently pumps the three lowest states of the cation, D₀, D₁, and D₂. The quantum dynamical simulations show that a strong isotope effect occurs when the ionization significantly accesses the D₂ state of the cation in the Franck-Condon region. The computed isotope effect is larger than expected on the basis of the effective mass ratio. The strong effect is due to fast oscillations of the electronic coherences between the D₂ and the D₁ and D₀ electronic states and their modulation by the nonadiabatic couplings before a significant onset of nuclear motion. The magnitude of the effect is similar to the one that we previously reported for a sudden photoionization process. A strong isotope effect has been observed in high harmonic spectroscopy studies of the very short time dynamics Jahn-Teller structural rearrangement of the methane cation upon sudden ionization.

The density matrix via few dominant observables: The quantum interference in the isotope effect for atto-pumped N2

Atto- and sub-femto-photochemistry enables preparation of molecules in a coherent superposition of several electronic states. Recently [Ajay et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 115, 5890-5895 (2018)], we examined an effect of the nuclear mass during the non-adiabatic transfer between strongly coupled Rydberg and valence electronic states in N₂ excited by an ultrafast pulse. Here, we develop and analyze an algebraic description for the density matrix and its logarithm, the surprisal, in such a superposition of states with a focus on the essentially quantum effect of mass. This allows for the identification of a few observables that accurately characterize the density matrix of the system with several coupled electron-nuclear states. We compact the time evolution in terms of time-dependent coefficients of these observables. Using the few observables, we derive an analytical expression for the time-dependent surprisal. This provides a mass-dependent phase factor only in the observables off-diagonal in the electronic index. The isotope effect is shown to be explicitly driven by the shift in the equilibrium position of the valence state potential. It is analytically given as a time-dependent phase factor describing the interference in the overlap of the two wave packets on the coupled electronic states. This phase factorizes as a product of classical and quantal contributions.

Ultrafast geometrical reorganization of a methane cation upon sudden ionization: an isotope effect on electronic non-equilibrium quantum dynamics

The ultrafast structural, Jahn-Teller (JT) driven, electronic coherence mediated quantum dynamics in the CH4+ and CD4+ cations that follows sudden ionization using an XUV attopulse exhibits a strong isotope effect. The JT effect makes the methane cation unstable in the Td geometry of the neutral molecule. Upon the sudden ionization the cation is produced in a coherent superposition of three electronic states that are strongly coupled and neither is in equilibrium with the nuclei. In the ground state of the cation the few femtosecond structural rearrangement leads first to a geometrically less distorted D2d minimum followed by a geometrical reorganization to a shallow C2v minimum. The dynamics is computed for an ensemble of 8000 ions randomly oriented with respect to the polarization of the XUV pulse. The ratio, about 3, of the CD4+ to CH4+ autocorrelation functions, is in agreement with experimental measurements of high harmonic spectra. The high value of the ratio is attributed to the faster electronic coherence dynamics in CH4+.

Strong and selective isotope effect in the vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation branching ratios of carbon monoxide

Rare isotope (¹³C, ¹⁷O and ¹⁸O) substitutions can substantially change absorption line positions, oscillator strengths and photodissociation rates of carbon monoxide (CO) in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region, which has been well accounted for in recent photochemical models for understanding the large isotopic fractionation effects that are apparent in carbon and oxygen in the solar system and molecular clouds. Here, we demonstrate a strong isotope effect associated with the VUV photodissociation of CO by measuring the branching ratios of ¹²C¹⁶O and ¹³C¹⁶O in the Rydberg 4p(2), 5p(0) and 5s(0) complex region. The measurements show that the quantum yields of electronically excited C atoms in the photodissociation of ¹³C¹⁶O are dramatically different from those of ¹²C¹⁶O, revealing strong isotope effect. This isotope effect strongly depends on specific quantum states of CO being excited, which implies that such effect must be considered in the photochemical models on a state by state basis.

Use of Isotope Effects To Understand the Present and Past of the Atmosphere and Climate and Track the Origin of Life

Stable isotope ratio measurements have been used as a measure of a wide variety of processes, including solar system evolution, geological formational temperatures, tracking of atmospheric gas and aerosol chemical transformation, and is the only means by which past global temperatures may be determined over long time scales. Conventionally, isotope effects derive from differences of isotopically substituted molecules in isotope vibrational energy, bond strength, velocity, gravity, and evaporation/condensation. The variations in isotope ratio, such as ¹⁸ O/¹⁶ O (δ¹⁸ O) and ¹⁷ O/¹⁶ O (δ¹⁷ O) are dependent upon mass differences with δ¹⁷ O/δ¹⁸ O=0.5, due to the relative mass differences (1 amu vs. 2 amu). Relations that do not follow this are termed mass independent and are the focus of this Minireview. In chemical reactions such as ozone formation, a δ¹⁷ O/δ¹⁸ O=1 is observed. Physical chemical models capture most parameters but differ in basic approach and are reviewed. The mass independent effect is observed in atmospheric species and used to track their chemistry at the modern and ancient Earth, Mars, and the early solar system (meteorites).
