Architected Poly(ionic liquid) Composites with Spatially Programmable Mechanical Properties and Mixed Conductivity

Structural electrolytes present advantages over liquid varieties, which are critical to myriad applications. In particular, structural electrolytes based on polymerized ionic liquids or poly(ionic liquids) (pILs) provide wide electrochemical windows, high thermal stability, nonvolatility, and modular chemistry. However, current methods of fabricating structural electrolytes from pILs and their composites present limitations. Recent advances have been made in 3D printing pIL electrolytes, but current printing techniques limit the complexity of forms that can be achieved, as well as the ability to control mechanical properties or conductivity. We introduce a method for fabricating architected pIL composites as structural electrolytes via embedded 3D (EMB3D) printing. We present a modular design for formulating ionic liquid (IL) monomer composite inks that can be printed into sparse, lightweight, free-standing lattices with different functionalities. In addition to characterizing the rheological and mechanical behaviors of IL monomer inks and pIL lattices, we demonstrate the self-sensing capabilities of our printed structural electrolytes during cyclic compression. Finally, we use our inks and printing method to spatially program self-sensing capabilities in pIL lattices through heterogeneous architectures as well as ink compositions that provide mixed ionic-electronic conductivity. Our free-form approach to fabricating structural electrolytes in complex, 3D forms with programmable, anisotropic properties has broad potential use in next-generation sensors, soft robotics, bioelectronics, energy storage devices, and more.

A Novel Resistive Sensor Network Utilizing an SAP-Enhanced Ionic Layer and CNT Doping for Multipoint Pressure Measurement

Amidst the rapid advancements in flexible electronics, flexible pressure sensors have achieved widespread applications in fields such as wearable devices and motion monitoring. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to design a sensor with high sensitivity, cost-effectiveness, and a simplified manufacturing process. This paper introduces a piezoresistive sensor built upon a composite conductive filler. The sensor incorporates a super absorbent polymer (SAP) to absorb a phosphoric acid solution and doped carbon nanotubes as the composite conductive filler. In contrast to conventional rigid conductive fillers, the elastic polymer SAP enhances the sensor's stability significantly by exhibiting superior compatibility with the polydimethylsiloxane matrix, all the while reducing its Young's modulus. This work aims to theoretically elucidate the underlying principles that enable the sensor to achieve high sensitivity. It focuses on the induction of charge carriers due to pressure, which leads to the formation of a conductive pathway and subsequent changes in resistance, thus facilitating precise pressure detection. The paper also discusses the effects of piezoresistive layers with varying thicknesses and conductive fillers on the sensor's output performance. The results highlight the sensor's high sensitivity (0.094 kPa-1), rapid response time (105 ms), and exceptional cyclic load/unload stability (>5000 cycles). Furthermore, this paper establishes a versatile sensing network by integrating a portable inductance, capacitance, and resistance instrument with a programmable logic controller module. Compared to individual sensors, this system enables multipoint measurements, offering high spatial resolution and real-time monitoring capabilities, significantly expanding its overall practicality.

Purposive Design of Stretchable Composite Electrodes for Strain-Negative, Strain-Neutral, and Strain-Positive Ionic Sensors

Soft ionic sensors have emerged as a promising device form to accommodate various future electronic applications. One of the hurdles in ionic sensors is that the sensing signals by mechanical deformation and other stimuli are mixed up. Although the performance of the ionic sensors is highly dependent on the structure of electrodes, systematic investigation of purposive electrode design has been rarely explored. This study proposes a simple strategy for designing stretchable composite electrodes which make the ionic sensor strain-negative, strain-neutral, and strain-positive. This study reveals that such strain-responses can be obtained by adjusting the surface coverage of the electrically-effective conductive fillers. On the basis of the concept, deposition of a Au film on an elastomer composite and crack formation of the Au film are presented for the practical fabrication of a highly reproducible strain-neutral ionic sensor. A completely strain-independent temperature sensor is demonstrated by using the Au crack-based ionic sensor. In addition, this study demonstrates a two-terminal shear sensor capable of recognizing shear directions by combining the strain-positive and strain-negative electrodes.

Wearable Liquid Metal Composite with Skin-Adhesive Chitosan-Alginate-Chitosan Hydrogel for Stable Electromyogram Signal Monitoring

In wearable bioelectronics, various studies have focused on enhancing prosthetic control accuracy by improving the quality of physiological signals. The fabrication of conductive composites through the addition of metal fillers is one way to achieve stretchability, conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, it is difficult to measure stable biological signals using these soft electronics during physical activities because of the slipping issues of the devices, which results in the inaccurate placement of the device at the target part of the body. To address these limitations, it is necessary to reduce the stiffness of the conductive materials and enhance the adhesion between the device and the skin. In this study, we measured the electromyography (EMG) signals by applying a three-layered hydrogel structure composed of chitosan-alginate-chitosan (CAC) to a stretchable electrode fabricated using a composite of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene and eutectic gallium-indium. We observed stable adhesion of the CAC hydrogel to the skin, which aided in keeping the electrode attached to the skin during the subject movement. Finally, we fabricated a multichannel array of CAC-coated composite electrodes (CACCE) to demonstrate the accurate classification of the EMG signals based on hand movements and channel placement, which was followed by the movement of the robot arm.

The Effect of Filler Dimensionality and Content on Resistive Viscoelasticity of Conductive Polymer Composites for Soft Strain Sensors

Soft strain sensors based on conductive polymer composites (CPCs) provide a simple and feasible detection tool in wearable electronics, soft machines, electronic skin, etc. However, the CPCs-based soft strain sensors exhibit resistive viscoelasticity (or time-dependent properties) that hinder the intuitive reflection of the accurate strain and a simple calibration process. In this paper, CPCs with different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB) contents were prepared, and electro-mechanical experiments were conducted to study the effect of filler dimensionality and content on the resistive viscoelasticity of CPCs, aimed at guiding the fabrication of CPCs with low resistive viscoelasticity. Furthermore, resistive viscoelasticity and mechanical viscoelasticity were compared to study the origin of the resistive viscoelasticity of CPCs. We found that, at the vicinity of their percolation threshold, the CPCs exhibit high resistive viscoelasticity despite their high sensitivity. In addition, the secondary peaks for CB/SR composite were negligible when the CB concentration was low. Generally, compared with one-dimensional CNT-filled CPCs, the zero-dimensional CB-filled CPCs show higher sensitivity, lower resistive hysteresis, lower resistance relaxation ratio, and better cyclic performance, so they are more suitable for sensor usage. By comparing the resistive viscoelasticity and mechanical viscoelasticity of CPCs, it is indicated that, when the concentration of nanoparticles (NPs) approaches the percolation thresholds, the resistive viscoelasticity is mainly derived from the change of conductive network, while when the concentration of NPs is higher, it is primarily due to the unrecoverable deformations inside the material.

Polyelectrolyte elastomer-based ionotronic sensors with multi-mode sensing capabilities via multi-material 3D printing

Stretchable ionotronics have drawn increasing attention during the past decade, enabling myriad applications in engineering and biomedicine. However, existing ionotronic sensors suffer from limited sensing capabilities due to simple device structures and poor stability due to the leakage of ingredients. In this study, we rationally design and fabricate a plethora of architected leakage-free ionotronic sensors with multi-mode sensing capabilities, using DLP-based 3D printing and a polyelectrolyte elastomer. We synthesize a photo-polymerizable ionic monomer for the polyelectrolyte elastomer, which is stretchable, transparent, ionically conductive, thermally stable, and leakage-resistant. The printed sensors possess robust interfaces and extraordinary long-term stability. The multi-material 3D printing allows high flexibility in structural design, enabling the sensing of tension, compression, shear, and torsion, with on-demand tailorable sensitivities through elaborate programming of device architectures. Furthermore, we fabricate integrated ionotronic sensors that can perceive different mechanical stimuli simultaneously without mutual signal interferences. We demonstrate a sensing kit consisting of four shear sensors and one compressive sensor, and connect it to a remote-control system that is programmed to wirelessly control the flight of a drone. Multi-material 3D printing of leakage-free polyelectrolyte elastomers paves new avenues for manufacturing stretchable ionotronics by resolving the deficiencies of stability and functionalities simultaneously.

Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

A Metal Nanoparticle Thermistor with the Beta Value of 10 000 K

The thermistor, typically made from metallic oxides, is a type of resistor whose electrical resistance is dependent on its temperature. Despite the wide usage, the limitations of ceramic thermistors become increasingly apparent as devices with improved performances are sought and as new applications emerge. Herein, a thermistor that is showed with a beta (B) value of 10 000 K can be made exclusively from metal nanoparticles functionalized with charged organic ligands. This B value is hard to achieve for ceramic devices, which is due to the increase of effective counterion concentration and its mobility upon thermal activation. Importantly, the performance of the nanoparticle thermistor is maintained when it is fabricated on a flexible substrate and experiences reversible bending. Demos of thermistor arrays for heat transfer, distribution, and comparison of their performance with commercial products are also demonstrated. Owing to the low temperature and simple casting process, conformably flexible characteristics, stable solid states, and ultra-high sensitivities, this device is expected to be practically used soon.
