Mixed effects of moderate exercise and subsequent various food ingestion on breath acetone

Acetone, which is exhaled with breath, is a by-product of lipolysis and could be used as a simple, useful indicator of lipolysis in the body because, unlike blood sampling, it can be measured non-invasively and repeatedly. Breath acetone concentration, however, is known to be affected by several factors such as exercise and food. We designed the experiments to evaluate the mixed effect on breath acetone of exercise and food ingestion in order to enhance the usefulness of breath acetone for monitoring fat loss. Seven healthy males performed moderate exercise for twice of 45 min with an interval of 15 min then rested for 4 h. Exhaled air was sampled every 15 min throughout the experiment. The subjects took one of four types, sugar-rich, balanced, protein-rich and fat-rich, of food for lunch one hour after the exercises or kept fasting. In the case of fasting, breath acetone kept increasing significantly (p < 0.05) compared with the rest value after the exercises until the end of the experiment. In contrast, in the case of taking any type of food, the change in breath acetone varied according to the food type. In the case of taking sugar-rich food, breath acetone significantly decreased (p < 0.05) compared with the fasting case. This decrease might be due to a suppression of acetone production when carbohydrates such as sugar are supplied to a body in the fasting condition. In contrast, in the case of taking fat-rich food, breath acetone showed the higher level than the fasting case. This additional increase might be attributable to the promotion of ketone bodies production, including acetone, due to the ingestion of medium chain triglycerides contained in the fat-rich food. We should therefore consider exercise and food ingestion in using breath acetone as a non-invasive indicator of lipolysis.

Breath Acetone Measurement-Based Prediction of Exercise-Induced Energy and Substrate Expenditure

The purpose of our study was to validate a newly developed breath acetone (BrAce) analyzer, and to explore if BrAce could predict aerobic exercise-related substrate use. Six healthy men ran on a treadmill at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO_2max) for 1 h after two days of a low-carbohydrate diet. BrAce and blood ketone (acetoacetate (ACAC), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB)) levels were measured at baseline and at different time points of post-exercise. BrAce values were validated against blood ketones and respiratory exchange ratio (RER). Our results showed that BrAce was moderately correlated with BOHB (r = 0.68, p < 0.01), ACAC (r = 0.37, p < 0.01) and blood ketone (r = 0.60, p < 0.01), suggesting that BrAce reflect blood ketone levels, which increase when fat is oxidized. Furthermore, BrAce also negatively correlated with RER (r = 0.67, p < 0.01). In our multiple regression analyses, we found that when BMI and VO_2max were added to the prediction model in addition to BrAce, R² values increased up to 0.972 at rest and 0.917 at 1 h after exercise. In conclusion, BrAce level measurements of our BrAce analyzer reflect blood ketone levels and the device could potentially predict fat oxidation.

Physical activity, diet and behaviour modification in the treatment of overweight and obese adults: a systematic review

Aim: The aim was to extend the body of knowledge through a systematic review that combines the strengths and partly fills the gaps from earlier reviews. The aim is to review randomized controlled trials of the long-term effectiveness of physical exercise/activity with or without diet and/or behaviour modification therapy in terms of training effect, weight loss and improvement of body composition in overweight and obese, healthy adults.

Methods: Data for systematic review was collected via a search of databases for literature published between 1995 and 2006. The search yielded 12 articles.

Results: The studies showed that training intensity should be moderate. The treatment of overweight and obese individuals with training alone cannot be expected to result in any substantial weight loss but should be combined with diet and behaviour modification therapy. However training can be an important factor in preventing further weight gain, or in helping individuals maintain a lowered body weight.

Conclusion: According to this systematic review of randomized controlled trials, the treatment that produced the best weight loss results included a combination of training, behaviour therapy and diet.

Exercício concorrente: análise do efeito agudo da ordem de execução sobre o gasto energético total

O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o efeito da ordem de execução dos exercícios de força e aeróbio sobre o gasto energético total na sessão. Para isso, dez homens tiveram seu consumo de oxigênio medido continuamente durante as seguintes sessões: aeróbio-força (AF) e força-aeróbio (FA). O exercício aeróbio consistiu de 30 minutos de corrida na esteira a 90% da velocidade do limiar anaeróbio. A sessão de força foi composta de quatro exercícios, na qual os participantes realizavam três séries de 12 repetições a 70% de 1RM. A concentração de lactato sanguíneo [La] foi mensurada após cada exercício de força e nos minutos 10, 20 e 30 do exercício aeróbio. A [La] durante a execução do exercício aeróbio permaneceu maior (p < 0,05) na situação FA quando comparado com a AF aos 10 (FA = 5,1 ± 1,3mmol.l-1; AF = 3,2 ± 1,0mmol.l-1), 20 (FA = 4,2 ± 1,0mmol.l-1; AF = 3,0 ± 0,9mmol.l-1) e 30 minutos (FA = 3,9 ± 1,3mmol.l-1; AF = 3,4 ± 1,1mmol.l-1). O gasto energético total não diferiu entre as ordens de exercício (FA = 2.793 ± 811kJ; AF = 2.893 ± 903 kJ; p > 0,05), indicando que a ordem de execução não afetou significativamente o gasto energético.

Military services fitness database: development of a computerized physical fitness and weight management database for the U.S. Army

The Department of Defense (DoD) has mandated development of a system to collect and manage data on the weight, percent body fat (%BF), and fitness of all military personnel. This project aimed to (1) develop a computerized weight and fitness database to track individuals and Army units over time allowing cross-sectional and longitudinal evaluations and (2) test the computerized system for feasibility and integrity of data collection over several years of usage. The computer application, the Military Services Fitness Database (MSFD), was designed for (1) storage and tracking of data related to height, weight, %BF for the Army Weight Control Program (AWCP) and Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) scores and (2) generation of reports using these data. A 2.5-year pilot test of the MSFD indicated that it monitors population and individual trends of changing body weight, %BF, and fitness in a military population.

Beneficial effects of conjugated linoleic acid and exercise on bone of middle-aged female mice

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that has recently been shown to have several beneficial effects on different diseases, including prevention of bone loss. The important feature of CLA is to reduce fat mass, thereby reducing body weight significantly. Although loss of body weight is known to increase bone loss, there is increasing evidence that CLA maybe beneficial to bone. Another factor that can reduce body weight is exercise (EX). It is well established that moderate EX stimulates bone formation. In this study, we analyzed the changes in bone using pQCT densitometry in middle-aged C57Bl/6 mice fed CLA (0.5%) and/or exercised. Twelve-month-old mice were divided into the following groups: group 1, corn oil, sedentary (CO SED); group 2, corn oil, exercise (CO EX); group 3, CLA, sedentary (CLA SED); and group 4, CLA, exercise (CLA EX). Mice were maintained in the respective experimental regimens for 10 weeks, after which mice were scanned using DEXA and killed. The lumbar vertebrae, femur, and tibia were analyzed using pQCT densitometry. CLA, when given alone or in combination with EX, significantly reduced body weight and increased lean mass. CLA treatment also significantly increased bone mass. Further, additional increase in bone mass was observed in mice treated with a combination of CLA and EX in almost all the bone sites analyzed. We conclude that CLA, when consumed as a dietary supplement along with moderate treadmill EX, significantly increases bone mass in middle-aged female mice.

Understanding and addressing the epidemic of obesity: an energy balance perspective

The intent of this paper is to address the obesity epidemic, which is a term used to describe the sudden and rapid increase in obesity rates that began in the 1980s and continues unabated today. Since 1980, the entire population, regardless of starting weight, is gradually gaining weight. This has led to escalating obesity rates and to obesity being considered one of the most serious public health challenges facing the world. At one level, the obesity epidemic is a classic gene-environment interaction where the human genotype is susceptible to environmental influences that affect energy intake and energy expenditure. It is also a problem of energy balance. Understanding the etiology of obesity requires the study of how behavioral and environmental factors have interacted to produce positive energy balance and weight gain. Reversing the epidemic of obesity will require modifying some combination of these factors to help the population achieve energy balance at a healthy body weight. While body weight is strongly influenced by biological and behavioral factors, changes in the environment promoting positive energy balance have been most responsible for the obesity epidemic. Our best strategy for reversing the obesity epidemic is to focus on preventing positive energy balance in the population through small changes in diet and physical activity that take advantage of our biological systems for regulating energy balance. Simultaneously, we must address the environment to make it easier to make better food and physical activity choices. This is a very long-term strategy for first stopping and then reversing the escalating obesity rates, but one that can, over time, return obesity rates to pre-1980s levels.

Body-weight regulation: causes of obesity

The aetiology and treatment of obesity have been fraught with disappointment for researchers, because the mechanisms that control fuel homeostasis and adiposity are incompletely understood. It is assumed that regulatory processes match the dietary fuel supply with energy requirements in order to maintain a stable body mass and adiposity. In this context several theories have been proposed to explain the laws of thermodynamics describing the conservation and transformation of energy in living organisms. In the light of new evidence it can now be hypothesized that the control of body weight and composition depends on an axis with three interrelated and self-controlled components: (1) food intake; (2) nutrient turnover and thermogenesis; (3) body fat stores. Complex feedback mechanisms underlie all these components. The major factors involved in obesity seem to be dietary and physical activity habits. These factors are affected by susceptibility genes that in turn may influence energy expenditure, fuel metabolism, muscle fibre function and appetite or food preferences. However, the increasing rates of obesity cannot be explained exclusively by changes in the gene pool, although genetic variants that were previously 'silent' are now being triggered by the high availability of energy- and fat-dense foods, and by the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of modern societies. The study of factors such as genetics and lifestyle implicated in weight gain and obesity is crucial for predictions about the future impact of the global epidemic of obesity, and provides a unique opportunity for the implementation of preventive action.

The role of exercise in the treatment of obesity

The prevalence of obesity in the USA has increased dramatically in the past decade. This foreshadows an increase in the rates of morbidity and mortality from obesity-related diseases and increases in the number of individuals undergoing weight-loss therapy. Although exercise has long been recommended for inclusion in such therapy, the present review has found that it has had little or no effect on weight loss per se when the exercise is limited to the typically prescribed 3-5 h/wk of moderate or vigorous activity. However, further review has shown that exercise helps to preserve and at times even increase fat-free mass during weight loss. At the same time, fat loss is generally increased. Neither type nor amount of exercise appears to have much effect during treatment, with the possible exception of resistance training, which is associated with the best outcome for fat-free mass. The most important role of exercise, however, is in the maintenance of the weight loss. In this respect, the volume of exercise seems to be important because several lines of evidence have indicated that exercise must expend roughly 2500 kcal/wk to maintain weight loss. Studies of weight maintenance, however, have generally not included randomized controls; thus, further research is required to solidify these conclusions.
