Needle trap device technique: From fabrication to sampling

Needle Trap Device (NTD) as a novel, versatile, and eco-friendly technique has played an important role in analytical and environmental chemistry. The distinctive role of this interdisciplinary technique can be defended through the sampling and analysis of biological samples and industrial pollutants in gaseous and liquid environments. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to enhance the performance of the needle trap device resulting in the development of novel extraction routes by various packing materials with improved selectivity and enhanced adsorption characteristics. These achievements can lead to the facilitated pre-concentration of desired analytes. This review tries to have a comparative and comprehensive survey of the three important areas of NTD technique: I) Fabrication and preparation procedures of NTDs; II) Sampling techniques of pollutants using NTDs; and III) Employed materials as adsorbents in NTDs. In the packing-material section, the commercial and synthetic adsorbents such as carbon materials, metal-organic frameworks, aerogel, and polymers are considered. Furthermore, the limitations and potential areas for future development of the NTD technique are presented.

Magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimer grafted with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid as an adsorbent for preconcentration and sensitive determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples

Polyamidoamine dendrimer decorated Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles was synthesized and grafted with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA). The resulting material was utilized to develop an effective magnetic solid phase extraction method in combination with high performance liquid chromatography for trace determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including phenanthrene (PHE), anthracene (ANT), fluoranthene (FLT), pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). The MNPs@G3.0@4-MBA exhibited to be an efficient extracting medium due to the existence of terminal benzene ring groups, the internal pores, and strong hydrophobic interactions and π-π interactions. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed method possessed excellent linearity in the concentration range of 0.1-300 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficients (R) larger than 0.997, and the limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) according to the ratio of signal to noise equal to three of PHE, ANT, FLT, PYR and BaP were 0.014 μg L^-1, 0.032 μg L^-1, 0.055 μg L^-1, 0.027 μg L^-1 and 0.039 μg L^-1, respectively. The proposed method was applied to real water samples and the spiked recoveries were over the range of 92-99%. The results showed that the method earned good repeatability and high sensitivity, and the as-prepared materials were stable and reusable, which displayed that the proposed method would have a wonderful application prospect.

Porphyrin-functionalized graphene oxide sheets: An efficient nanomaterial for micro solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from urine samples

In this work, porphyrin-functionalized graphene oxide nanosheets (GO@meso-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin) were synthesized and employed as the sorbent. Porphyrins owing to their unique structures and tunable terminal functional groups are expected to be promising media for extraction of the desired analytes. Also, GO with a high specific surface area has exhibited good potential for the extraction purposes. Inspired by these intriguing properties, the combination of GO and porphyrin can benefit both of these amazing features. The synthesized sorbent was utilized for micro solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs followed by HPLC-UV. Optimization of the experimental factors including sorbent amount, sample pH, sample and eluent flowrates, eluent volume, and the number of desorption cycles were performed with the aid of central composite design. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves were linear within the range of 2.0-600 ng mL^-1 and limits of detection were found between 0.5-2.0 ng mL^-1. The preconcentration factors and absolute recoveries were obtained in the range of 4.80-9.79 and 29%-59%, respectively. The matrix effect for the urine samples varied between 81.9%-91.6% at two concentrations of 50 and 300 ng mL^-1, respectively. Intra- and inter-day RSD% (n = 3) of the spiked urine samples at three level concentrations of 25, 100, and 300 ng mL^-1 were less than 10%. The relative recoveries of the urine samples were calculated in the range of 85.2-98.6%. Eventually, the method exhibits proper sensitivity, excellent repeatability, high reusability, and acceptable precision and accuracy.
