Interspecific interactions between blood parasites in a wild rodent community

Autochthonous Trypanosoma spp. in European Mammals: A Brief Journey amongst the Neglected Trypanosomes

The genus Trypanosoma includes flagellated protozoa belonging to the family Trypanosomatidae (Euglenozoa, Kinetoplastida) that can infect humans and several animal species. The most studied species are those causing severe human pathology, such as Chagas disease in South and Central America, and the human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), or infections highly affecting animal health, such as nagana in Africa and surra with a wider geographical distribution. The presence of these Trypanosoma species in Europe has been thus far linked only to travel/immigration history of the human patients or introduction of infected animals. On the contrary, little is known about the epidemiological status of trypanosomes endemically infecting mammals in Europe, such as Trypanosomatheileri in ruminants and Trypanosomalewisi in rodents and other sporadically reported species. This brief review provides an updated collection of scientific data on the presence of autochthonous Trypanosoma spp. in mammals on the European territory, in order to support epidemiological and diagnostic studies on Trypanosomatid parasites.

Blood parasites (Babesia, Hepatozoon and Trypanosoma) of rodents, Lithuania: part I. Molecular and traditional microscopy approach

Wild rodents, as natural reservoir hosts carrying various species of pathogens, play an important role in the evolution and emergence of zoonotic diseases. In this study, protist parasites, namely Babesia sp., Trypanosoma sp. and Hepatozoon sp. were studied in rodent populations in Lithuania. Two hundred forty rodent specimens of seven species were analysed by a combined approach using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based techniques and traditional microscopic examination. The total prevalence of blood parasites reached 35% in rodent communities. The prevalence of Hepatozoon sp. reached the highest value (32%), followed by Trypanosoma sp. (5%) and Babesia sp. (3%). Myodes glareolus and Microtus agrestis were the most heavily infected rodent species. Comparison of microscopy and PCR-based methods showed that the two approaches might give different results and thus can lead to an underestimation of the actual prevalence and abundance of parasites. In our study, PCR-based assays were more sensitive and robust than traditional microscopy. However, precise molecular results for the estimation of the prevalence of Babesia sp. and Hepatozoon sp. were achieved only by using several sets of primers. To avoid inaccurate results, the improvement and detailed description of molecular and microscopy protocols are required.

Haemogregarines of the genus Hepatozoon (Apicomplexa: Adeleina) in rodents from northern Europe

We studied the prevalence and distribution of Hepatozoon infections in small rodents from Finland and other areas in northern Europe. Hepatozoon infections were more common in voles (Arvicolinae) than mice (Murinae) and more prevalent in voles of the genus Clethrionomys than in voles of the genus Microtus. Transmission electron microscopical examination of Hepatozoon erhardovae Krampitz, 1964 from bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber) showed that intracellular lung meronts were located in alveolar septa. Meronts consisted of varying numbers of merozoites packed with amylopectin vacuoles inside electron-lucent parasitophorous vacuole. The size of the meronts was approximately 19 x 14 microm. Monozoic or dizoic cysts were frequent findings in the lung alveoles; the size of cysts was approximately 10 x 6 microm. Gametocytes were found inside eosinophilic granulocytes in the capillaries of lung tissue. Ultrastructurally, micronemes, microtubules, mitochondria, nuclei and lipid droplets were visible.
