Relationship between acute ozone responsiveness and chronic loss of lung function in residents of a high-ozone community

Physiological daily inhalation rates for health risk assessment in overweight/obese children, adults, and elderly

Physiological daily inhalation rates reported in our previous study for normal-weight subjects 2.6-96 years old were compared to inhalation data determined in free-living overweight/obese individuals (n = 661) aged 5-96 years. Inhalation rates were also calculated in normal-weight (n = 408), overweight (n = 225), and obese classes 1, 2, and 3 adults (n = 134) aged 20-96 years. These inhalation values were based on published indirect calorimetry measurements (n = 1,069) and disappearance rates of oral doses of water isotopes (i.e., (2)H2 O and H2 (18)O) monitored by gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry usually in urine samples for an aggregate period of over 16,000 days. Ventilatory equivalents for overweight/obese subjects at rest and during their aggregate daytime activities (28.99 ± 6.03 L to 34.82 ± 8.22 L of air inhaled/L of oxygen consumed; mean ± SD) were determined and used for calculations of inhalation rates. The interindividual variability factor calculated as the ratio of the highest 99th percentile to the lowest 1st percentile of daily inhalation rates is higher for absolute data expressed in m3 /day (26.7) compared to those of data in m3/kg-day (12.2) and m3/m2-day (5.9). Higher absolute rates generally found in overweight/obese individuals compared to their normal-weight counterparts suggest higher intakes of air pollutants (in μg/day) for the former compared to the latter during identical exposure concentrations and conditions. Highest absolute mean (24.57 m3/day) and 99th percentile (55.55 m3 /day) values were found in obese class 2 adults. They inhale on average 8.21 m3 more air per day than normal-weight adults.

Effect of summer ozone concentrations on the lung function of walkers in the Medvednica Mountain Nature Park, Croatia

The study examines the influence of naturally elevated ozone concentrations and some meteorological variables on the lung function of untrained volunteers walking in an unpolluted mountain area. Forty male participants between 18 and 70 years (smokers and nonsmokers) walked at the top of Medvednica Mountain near Zagreb, Croatia, at approximately 1000 m above sea level (a.s.l.) and engaged in other recreational activities for at least 1 hour. Forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) of the participants were measured at arrival and before they left the mountain. Regression analysis showed a statistically significant influence of environmental variables on lung function tests. However, all variables together explained less than 35% variability of FVC and 41% variability of FEV(1). The results suggest that short-term exposure to ozone may affect lung function tests, but no more than temperature and humidity. FEV(1) was found to be more sensitive to ozone than FVC. Smoking habit also had an important role in subject's sensitivity to ozone.

Inhalation of ultrafine and fine particulate matter disrupts systemic vascular function

This study investigated the effects of particulate matter (PM) with aerodynamic diameter 0.02-1 microm (noted as PM1) inhalation during exercise on conduit artery and microvascular function. Inhalation of internal combustion-derived PM is associated with cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Direct action of PM on the vascular endothelium is likely, as a substantial fraction of ultrafine PM translocates from the alveoli to the circulatory system. Sixteen intercollegiate athletes performed 30 min of exercise while inhaling low or high PM1. Flow-mediated brachial artery dilation (FMD) using high-resolution ultrasonography with simultaneous measurements of forearm oxygen kinetics using near infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS) was done before and after exercise. Basal brachial artery vasoconstriction was found after high PM1 exercise (4.0%, 4.66 +/- 0.609 to 4.47 +/- 0.625 mm diameter; p = .0002), but not after low PM1 exercise (-0.3%, 4.66 +/- 0.626 to 4.68 +/- 0.613 mm diameter). FMD was impaired after high PM1 exercise (6.8 +/- 3.58% for preexercise FMD and 0.30 +/- 2.74% for postexercise FMD, p = .0001), but not after low PM1 exercise (6.6 +/- 4.04% for preexercise FMD and 4.89 +/- 4.42% for postexercise FMD). Reduction in forearm muscle reperfusion estimated by reoxygenation slope-to-baseline after 4 min cuff ischemia was observed for high PM1 exercise (55% vs. 3%, p = .0006); no difference was noted for low PM1 exercise. Brachial artery FMD was significantly correlated to muscle reoxygenation slope-to-baseline (r = .50, p = .005). Acute inhalation of high [PM1] typical of urban environments impairs both systemic conduit artery function and microcirculation. The observed decrease reoxygenation slope-to-baseline after cuff release is consistent with reduced blood flow in the muscle microvasculature.
