The response of male broiler chickens to diets with various protein contents during the grower and finisher phases

Effects of different dietary ideal protein levels on male and female broiler performance during different phases of life: single phase effects, carryover effects, and interactions between phases

Several experiments in which the dietary ideal protein (IP) levels were increased indicate that with current IP recommendations the maximum performance of broilers will not be achieved. However, available data of this IP-increment approach is scarce and, for the starter phase, entirely lacking. The objective of the present study, therefore, was to generate data regarding the effects in the starter phase and to test the impact of adequate vs. high IP levels in preceding phases on the response to IP increment in the phase under study. To evaluate this, an IP dose response in the starter phase and factorial arrangements combining adequate or high IP levels in starter and grower diets with low, adequate, or high IP levels in finisher diets were carried out with male and female broilers. Enhanced dietary IP levels in the starter diet increased BW gain in the starter phase and in the consecutive grower phase. Moreover, it was shown that a delay in BW gain due to suboptimal IP levels in the starter diet could only be partly compensated for in later phases of life. These results demonstrate the need for a reevaluation of IP levels used in practical starter diets. Feed conversion efficiency and BW gain responses to increased IP levels in the grower and finisher diets were less pronounced when high compared with adequate IP levels were fed in the preceding phase. This difference in response could not be detected statistically but was consistent between experiments and phases. Therefore, this phenomenon should not simply be neglected.

Plasma levels of arginine, ornithine, and urea and growth performance of broilers fed supplemental L-arginine during cool temperature exposure

Two experiments (Experiment 1 and 2) were conducted to evaluate growth performance, ascites mortality, and concentrations of plasma Arg, urea, and ornithine in male broilers raised in floor pens (2 x 4 factorial experiment, six pens for treatment) and exposed to cool temperatures averaging 16 C after 21 d of age. Broilers were fed low- or high-CP diets in both Experiments. In Experiment 1, Arg treatments consisted of control (no supplemental Arg); 0.15 or 0.3% supplemental Arg in the diet (low- and medium-Arg feed, respectively); and 0.3% supplemental Arg in the drinking water (Arg-water). Arginine levels were increased in Experiment 2 and consisted of the following: control (no supplemental Arg); 0.3 or 0.85% supplemental Arg in the diet (medium- and high-Arg feed, respectively); and 0.6% supplemental Arg in the drinking water (Arg-water). The water treatment followed a 3-d cyclic regimen, with supplemental Arg being provided for 24 h, followed by tap water for 48 h. When the broilers reached 37 d of age and all groups had consumed tap water for the previous 48 h, blood samples were collected from one bird per pen (Time 0, 0700 h); then supplemental Arg was provided in the Arg-water group, and additional blood samples were collected from the control and Arg-water groups at 3, 6, 12, and 36 h after Time 0. Plasma amino acids were analyzed using HPLC. Birds fed the high-CP diet were heavier at 49 d than birds fed the low-CP diet in Experiment 1, but not in Experiment 2. No differences were found in feed conversion or ascites mortality due to CP or Arg treatments in either experiment. In both experiments, plasma Arg was similar for all groups at Time 0, but increased in the Arg-water group at 3, 6, and 12 h after Arg was provided in the water. Within 12 h after returning to tap water, plasma Arg levels of the Arg-water group did not differ from the control group. Plasma urea and ornithine were parallel to plasma Arg concentrations, and the high-CP diets resulted in higher plasma levels of urea and ornithine compared with low-CP diets. These results indicate that kidney arginase was readily activated by Arg provided in the water, resulting in an immediate increase in plasma urea and ornithine. Plasma Arg was increased significantly, but no effects were observed in ascites mortality.

Further studies on the influence of genotype and dietary protein on the performance of broilers

An experiment was conducted to quantify genetic differences in response to dietary protein level of male vs female broilers. Broilers (1 d old) from a "high-yield" strain cross (Ross x Ross 208) and a "fast-growing" strain cross (Peterson x Arbor Acres) were placed on fresh pine shavings in floor pens. From Day 0 to 18, all birds were fed a 23% CP starter diet. During Days 18 to 53 male birds were fed either a 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, or 26% CP diet (3,200 kcal ME/kg) and female birds were fed the 16, 20, or 24% CP diet. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were noted in the performance of the different strains. Ross x Ross 208 male birds had a higher body weight (3.37 vs 3.16 kg), higher feed intake (7.08 vs 6.78 kg), higher breast yield (31.76 vs 29.25%), higher carcass yield (73.90 vs 71.85%), and a lower adjusted feed conversion ratio (FCR; 2.10 vs 2.16 g:g) than Peterson x Arbor Acres males at 53 d of age. As compared to Peterson x Arbor Acres females, Ross x Ross 208 female broilers also had a higher body weight (2.68 vs 2.55 kg), higher breast meat yield (33.61 vs 30.80%), higher carcass yield (75.31 vs 73.91%), and lower adjusted FCR (1.97 vs 2.04 g:g). Qualitative differences in the response of these strains were confirmed and better qualitative data is presented that can be used to predict the important output parameters from the import inputs in broiler production.

Influence of broiler strain cross and dietary protein on the performance of broilers

The purpose of this experiment was to quantify the responses of two broiler strain crosses to different dietary protein levels on performance and carcass yields. Day-old broiler chicks from a high-yield strain cross (Ross x Ross 208) and a fast-growing strain cross (Peterson x Arbor Acres) were placed in floor pens on fresh pine shavings. All birds were fed a 23% CP starter for the first 18 d. During Days 18 to 53, birds were fed either 16, 20, or 24% CP diets (3,200 kcal ME/kg). At 53 d of age, significant differences (P < 0.05) were noted in the performance of the strains. Overall, Ross x Ross birds had higher body weights (3.29 vs 3.10 kg), higher feed intakes (6.40 vs 6.11 kg), and higher carcass yields (72.51 vs 71.17%), although the differences were dependent on dietary protein levels. Strain cross had no significant effect on feed conversion (1.95 g feed: g gain vs 1.97 g:g). Results indicated that both strain cross and protein level had effects on body weight and feed intake, and there were significant strain cross by protein level interactions for body weight and carcass weight. Increasing dietary protein level increased body weights more for the Ross x Ross 208 than for the Peterson x Arbor Acres broilers. Feed conversion was indirectly proportional to dietary protein level, but was not affected by strain cross. Percentage carcass yield was greatly affected by strain (P < 0.0001), but protein level had no significant effect (P = 0.68). The significant interactions indicate that different strain crosses should have different feeding programs to maximize profitability.

Effect of dietary energy restriction on retention of protein, fat and energy in broiler chickens

1. Broiler chickens were fed 60-100% of recommended energy intakes to study the effects of energy restriction on protein and fat retention. 2. At an energy retention of 179 kJ/kg W0.75 d, only protein was retained. At higher energy intakes, each increment in retention had a rather constant composition: about 85% energy in fat and 15% in protein. At lower energy intakes body fat was mobilised whereas protein was deposited. 3. The efficiencies of energy retention in protein and fat were estimated to be 0.66 and 0.86 respectively. 4. The rather constant composition of additional retained energy after additional energy supply provides an explanation for a linear relationship between energy intake and energy retention.

Effects of protein and amino acid level fed zero to forty-two days on response of broilers to protein and amino acid levels fed forty-two to forty-nine days of age

Three studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of protein and amino acid (AA) levels fed 0 to 42 days posthatch on response of broiler chickens to levels of protein and AA fed during the finisher period. Birds were grown to 42 days on diets formulated to contain a minimum of 105 or 120% of recommended AA levels, and then randomly assigned to diets formulated to contain a minimum of 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, or 120% of recommended AA levels for 42 to 49 days. No minimum protein level was imposed on the diets. Body weight, feed intake, feed utilization, dressing percentage, abdominal fat content, and parts yield were determined. The protein and AA level fed 0 to 42 days had significant effects on 42- and 49-day body weight and 42- to 49-day feed intake of male but not female broilers. However, there was no interaction of protein and AA levels fed 0 to 42 days on response to protein and AA levels fed 42 to 49 days for these criteria. Weight gain, feed intake, and feed utilization of both males and females 42 to 49 days were significantly influenced by protein and AA levels fed during this time; protein and AA requirements of females during this time appeared to be equal to, or greater than, those of the male broiler. Although there were significant interactions of protein and AA levels 0 to 42 and 42 to 49 days on various carcass parameters for both male and female broilers, these followed no consistent pattern. Protein and amino acid levels fed 0 to 42 days had a significant influence on both quantity and percentage of abdominal fat in both male and female broilers processed at 49 days but not on any other carcass parameters. The protein and AA levels fed 42 to 49 days had a significant effect on both quantity and percentage of abdominal fat in male but not female broilers. The protein and AA levels fed 42 to 49 days significantly influenced quantity but not percentage of breast meat in male but not female broilers. The results of the current study indicate that there was minimal carryover effect of protein and AA levels fed 0 to 42 days on response to AA levels fed 42 to 49 days.

Effects of dietary amino acid level and duration of finisher period on performance and carcass content of broilers forty-nine days of age

Two studies were conducted to evaluate feeding reduced levels of amino acids (AA) to broilers during the finisher period. Birds grown to 42 days on nutritionally complete diets were fed diets formulated to contain a minimum of 70, 80, 90, 100, or 110% of recommended AA levels for periods of 3, 5, or 7 days prior to slaughter at 49 days of age. Body weight, feed intake, feed utilization, dressing percentage, and abdominal fat content were determined. For finisher periods of 3 to 5 days, a reduction in recommended dietary AA levels may be utilized without impairment of body weight gains of broilers. Extending the finisher period to 7 days resulted in significant (P less than .05) reduction of body weight gains on diets with AA levels less than 90% of recommended levels. Feed utilization was more sensitive to reduction in AA levels and may be affected adversely even by a 5-day withdrawal period. Dressing percentage was reduced in some instances, and abdominal fat generally increased when reduced AA levels were fed. The economics of feeding reduced AA levels must be considered in evaluating the results of the present studies.

Effect of dietary protein level and length of feeding on performance and abdominal fat content of broiler chickens

Dietary CP levels influence carcass fat content of chickens but the length of time necessary to feed higher levels in order to increase carcass fat is not known. Studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of length of feeding of different levels of dietary CP on broiler performance and abdominal fat deposition. All diets were calculated to be isocaloric at 3,200 kcal ME/kg. Broilers fed 23% CP for 0 to 21 days, 20% CP for 21 to 42 days, and 18% CP for 42 to 49 or 42 to 56 days served as the control group in each of two trials. In the first trial, broilers were fed constant levels of CP from day-old to market age with CP levels ranging from 15 to 27% (amino acids adjusted in proportion to CP level). Other broilers were fed 23% CP for 0 to 21 days and then fed either 15, 17, 19, or 21% CP to market age. In the second trial, broilers were fed constant levels of CP (18, 20, or 23%) from day-old to market age. Feeding CP levels lower than those fed the control group had a more pronounced effect on males than on females, with the primary effects being reduced body weight, poorer feed utilization, and increased carcass fat content. Feeding CP levels higher than those fed the control group generally did not increase final body weight but generally improved feed utilization and decreased carcass fat content. The economics of improved feed utilization and reduced carcass fat must be considered in determining dietary CP levels to use at different ages for growing broilers.

Effects of dietary amino acid levels on performance and carcass composition of broilers 42 to 49 days of age

Broilers were grown to 42 days on nutritionally complete diets. From 42 to 49 days in two trials, broilers were fed diets formulated to contain 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, or 120% of recommended amino acid (AA) values. In four additional trials, the same AA levels were fed; in addition, Met and Lys were added to diets formulated to contain 70, 80, and 90% to equal levels of the 110% AA diet. Body weight gain (BWG), feed consumption (FC), feed conversion (FCR), dressing percentage (DP), and abdominal fat (AF) were measured. From 42 to 49 days, dietary AA levels had little effect on BWG, DP, or AF of female broilers. When male broilers were fed diets containing less than 100% of the recommended AA levels, BWG was reduced and AF increased. Broiler FC increased and FCR decreased as the AA level of the diet decreased. The addition of Met and Lys to the 90% AA diet improved performance; however, the addition of Met and Lys to the 70% AA diet had no beneficial effect. Amino acid levels may be reduced in broilers diets fed from 42 to 49 days; however, male broilers are more sensitive than females to reductions in AA levels during this period.
