Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary lycopene supplementation on growth performance and antioxidant status of broiler chickens exposed to cold environment to induce ascites. Three hundred male chickens were exposed full-day to cold stress (CT, 10°C) starting from day 15 of age until the end of experiment at day 42, while a positive control group (NT, 100 birds) was kept under normal temperature (23-25°C). The CT groups (three treatments and five replicates of 20 birds) were as follows: negative control (basal diet, CT) and CT + 200 or 400 mg lycopene per kg diet from 15 to 42 d of age. Results showed that CT without lycopene supplementation caused a reduction of feed intake and weight gain and increased the feed conversion ratio. Supplementation of lycopene during CT restored the performance to levels of the positive control, lowered the index of right ventricles/total ventricles and ascites mortality. Birds reared under CT had lower serum activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and higher malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration than birds reared under the NT environment. With lycopene supplementation, serum MDA level significantly decreased and the activity of SOD and GPx increased. Blood concentration of haematocrit, haemoglobin and red blood cells were decreased by the highest lycopene supplementation to a level comparable to NT. Moreover, increasing dietary lycopene level suppressed serum concentrations of cholesterol and enhanced high-density lipoproteins levels in blood. In conclusion, lycopene supplementation alleviates adverse effects of cold stress on performance through modulating activity of antioxidant enzymes in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models are growing in popularity due to human food safety concerns and for estimating drug residue distribution and estimating withdrawal intervals for veterinary products originating from livestock species. This paper focuses on the physiological and anatomical data, including cardiac output, organ weight, and blood flow values, needed for PBPK modeling applications for avian species commonly consumed in the poultry market. Experimental and field studies from 1940 to 2019 for broiler chickens (1-70 days old, 40 g - 3.2 kg), laying hens (4-15 months old, 1.1-2.0 kg), and turkeys (1 day-14 months old, 60 g -12.7 kg) were searched systematically using PubMed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect for data collection in 2019 and 2020. Relevant data were extracted from the literature with mean and standard deviation (SD) being calculated and compiled in tables of relative organ weights (% of body weight) and relative blood flows (% of cardiac output). Trends of organ or tissue weight growth during different life stages were calculated when sufficient data were available. These compiled data sets facilitate future PBPK model development and applications, especially in estimating chemical residue concentrations in edible tissues to calculate food safety withdrawal intervals for poultry.

Abstract
Heat stress causes significant economic losses in poultry production, especially in tropical and arid regions of the world. Several studies have investigated the effects of heat stress on the welfare and productivity of poultry. The harmful impacts of heat stress on different poultry types include decreased growth rates, appetites, feed utilization and laying and impaired meat and egg qualities. Recent studies have focused on the deleterious influences of heat stress on bird behaviour, welfare and reproduction. The primary strategies for mitigating heat stress in poultry farms have included feed supplements and management, but the results have not been consistent. This review article discusses the physiological effects of heat stress on poultry health and production and various management and nutritional approaches to cope with it.

Abstract
High eggshell temperatures (EST; ≥38.9°C) during the second half of incubation are known to decrease the body and organ development of broiler hatchlings. In particular, relative heart weights are decreased by a high EST, and this may increase the incidence of metabolic disorders that are associated with cardiovascular development, such as ascites. The current study investigated the effects of a high EST on chick quality, subsequent performance, and the incidence of ascites later in life. Eggs were incubated at a normal (37.8°C) or high (38.9°C) EST from d 7 of incubation onward. After hatching, the chickens were housed per EST in pens, and a normal or cold temperature schedule was applied during the grow-out period. Hatchability, hatchling quality, BW, feed conversion ratio, total mortality, mortality associated with ascites, slaughter characteristics, and ascites susceptibility at 6 wk of age were evaluated. Except for total ventricle weight, no interaction was found between EST and the grow-out temperature. Hatchability was comparable between the EST treatments, but the percentage of second-grade chickens was 0.7% higher at the high EST. Yolk-free body mass was 3.0 g lower, and heart weights were 26% lower at hatch in the high compared with the normal EST treatment. Body weight continued to be less during the grow-out period after the high EST incubation. However, breast meat yield was 1.0% higher in the high than in the normal EST. Feed conversion ratio did not differ between EST treatments. Total mortality was 4.1% higher and mortality associated with ascites was 3.8% higher in the high compared with the normal EST treatment. The ratio between the right and total ventricle was 1.1% higher in the high compared with the normal EST treatment at slaughter age. In conclusion, a high EST from d 7 of incubation onward decreased hatchling quality and growth performance, but increased breast meat yield. Furthermore, high EST incubation increased the incidence of ascites, which may be related to the reduced heart development at hatch.

Abstract
The development of ascites was investigated in broilers at low versus high altitudes, cold versus normal ambient temperatures (AT), and 3 feeding regimens. One-day-old chicks obtained at sea level were reared at high altitude (highA; 1,720 m; n = 576) with 2 AT treatments, low AT from 3 wk onward at highA (highA/cold) and normal AT from 3 wk onward at highA (highA/norm), or at sea level (normal AT from 3 wk onward at low altitude, lowA/norm; n = 540). Under highA/cold, AT ranged between 16 to 17 degrees C in the fourth week, 17 to 19 degrees C in the fifth week, and 19 to 21 degrees C thereafter. Under highA/norm and lowA/norm, AT was 24 degrees C in the fourth week and ranged between 22 to 24 degrees C thereafter. Broilers in each condition were divided into 3 groups: feed restriction (FR) from 7 to 14 d, FR from 7 to 21 d, and ad libitum (AL). Ascites mortality and related parameters were recorded. Low mortality (0.4%) occurred under lowA/norm conditions. Under highA/norm, mortality was lower in females (8.6%) than in males (13.8%) and was not affected by the feeding regimen. The highA/cold treatment resulted in higher mortality but only in males; it was 44.2% among highA/cold AL-fed males and only about 26% under the FR regimens, suggesting that FR helped some males to better acclimatize to the highA/cold environment and avoid ascites. However, mortality was only 13.3% in AL-fed males at highA/norm and FR did not further reduce the incidence of ascites under these conditions. Thus, avoiding low AT in the poultry house by slight heating was more effective than FR in reducing ascites mortality at highA. Compared with FR from 7 to 14 d, FR from 7 to 21 d did not further reduce mortality and reduced growth. At 47 d, the majority of surviving broilers at highA had high levels of hematocrit and right ventricle:total ventricle weight ratio (>0.29), but they were healthy and reached approximately the same BW as their counterparts at low altitude. This finding may suggest that in broilers reared at highA from day of hatch, the elevation in hematocrit and in right ventricle:total ventricle weight ratio happens gradually and therefore is not necessarily indicative of ascites development.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of arginine, vitamin E (VE), and vitamin C (VC) on cardiopulmonary performance and ascites parameters of broilers reared under a cold environmental temperature. One-day-old male broilers were fed a basal corn-soybean meal diet (control, 1.2% arginine and 40 IU of VE), or the basal diet supplemented with 1% arginine and either 200 IU vitamin E (AE), 500 mg of vitamin C (AC), or a combination of VE and VC at the same amounts (AEC) per kilogram of feed. Pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and mean arterial pressure were recorded in clinically healthy, anesthetized birds (28 to 42 d old) before and after an epinephrine (Epi) challenge (0.5 mg/kg of BW, i.v.), an aminoguanidine hemisulfate challenge (100 mg/kg of BW, i.v.), and an N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester challenge (50 mg/kg of BW, i.v.) at 20-min intervals. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, and the Student Newman-Keuls test was used to separate means within groups. The PAP increased 30 s after the Epi challenge in all birds, but the peak PAP was lower in the AEC group than in all the other groups, whereas birds in the AE and AC groups had lower PAP peaks than did the control group. After 120 s of challenge, the PAP was lower in AEC birds compared with the other birds. The PAP returned to pre-Epi amounts within 300 s in all groups. The PAP was increased (P < 0.05) within 60 s after the aminoguanidine hemisulfate and N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester challenges in all groups, but no differences were found among groups. The mean arterial pressure responses did not differ among groups. Plasma NO was greater in the AEC group than in all the other groups before and after the Epi challenge. These results showed that Epi elicited lower amplitude PAP and less prolonged increases in PAP in birds from the AEC group, and this may have been related to the increased vasodilation attributable to NO production. The AEC may have had complementary effects against oxidative stress, protecting the endothelium and preserving NO function.

Abstract
Broiler chickens (Gallus gallus) genetically selected for rapid growth are inherently predisposed to heart failure. In order to understand the biochemical mechanisms associated with the deterioration of heart function and development of congestive heart failure (CHF) in fast-growing chickens, this study examined several factors critical for myocardial energy metabolism. Measured variables included cardiac energy substrates [creatine phosphate (CrP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), l-carnitine], activity of selected cytosolic enzymes [creatine kinase (CK; EC 2.7.3.2), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; EC 1.1.1.27)] and mitochondrial enzymes [pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH; EC 1.2.4.1), alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (alpha-KGDH; EC 1.2.4.2)]. The CK activities were higher in fast-growing and CHF broilers as compared to slow-growing broilers (p<0.05). Cardiac LDH and alpha-KGDH activities were not changed (p>0.05), whereas PDH activity was highest (p<0.05) in broilers with CHF. Deterioration of heart function is correlated with lowered cardiac ATP, CrP, and l-carnitine levels (all p<0.05). Depletion of high energy phosphate substrates, ATP and CrP, is evident in fast-growing chickens and those that developed CHF. Increased activity of CK suggests that cardiac energy management in fast-growing broilers and those with CHF largely depends on contribution of this pathway to regeneration of ATP from CrP. In this scenario, inadequate level of CrP is a direct cause of ATP insufficiency, whereas low cardiac l-carnitine, because of its role in fatty acid transport, is most likely an important factor contributing to shortage of key substrate required for synthesis of cardiac ATP. The insufficiencies in cardiac energy substrate synthesis provide metabolic basis of myocardial dysfunction in chickens predisposed to heart failure.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of arginine (Arg) and vitamin E (VE) on ascites (pulmonary hypertension syndrome) parameters, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, and cardiopulmonary performance after an acute challenge with epinephrine (Epi). One-day-old male broilers (n = 100) were fed a commercial corn-soybean meal-based diet meeting NRC (1994) requirements, including 1.2% Arg and 40 IU of VE/kg. In experiment 1, birds were provided tap water (control), water with 0.3% Arg (HArg), water with 400 IU of VE/L (HVE), or a combination of both compounds (Arg-VE). In experiment 2, the treatment groups were similar but the VE was incorporated in the diet (400 IU/ kg of feed). At d 18, temperature was reduced to amplify the incidence of pulmonary hypertension. Body weight and hematocrit were recorded weekly. From d 28 to 42, cardiopulmonary performance was evaluated in clinically healthy, anesthetized birds (n = 7 to 8/treatment). A pulmonary artery and a systemic artery were cannulated, the birds were allowed to stabilize for 10 min (basal), an i.v. injection of Epi was applied (1 or 0.5 mg/kg of BW, experiment 1 and 2, respectively), and a second dose was applied 20 min later. Pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and heart rate (HR) were recorded continuously and data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. The NOS activity was estimated through the conversion of 14C-Arginine to 14C-citrulline in isolated pulmonary arteries. Right/total ventricular weight ratio (RV/TV) was recorded at the end of the experiment. Body weight, RV/TV, and hematocrit values were not significantly affected by the dietary treatments. The PAP increased (P < 0.01) within 30 s after Epi in all treatments, except the HArg treatment in experiment 2. Overall, the time taken for PAP to return to basal levels was longer in the Arg-VE birds and shorter in the HArg birds, particularly after the second challenge. However, although NOS activity was highly variable, birds fed HArg tended to have the lowest NOS activity of all groups. The levels of VE supplementation used in these experiments did not improve cardiopulmonary performance or NOS activity in isolated pulmonary arteries.

Abstract
1. One hundred and sixty 1-d-old Arbor Acre male broiler chicks were fed with maize-soybean based diets for 6 weeks in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment. The factors were CoQ10 supplementation (0 or 40 mg/kg) and Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge (LPS or saline). 2. CoQ10 was supplemented from d 1. From d 18, the chickens received three weekly i.p. injections of LPS (1.0 mg/kg BW) or an equivalent amount of sterile saline as control. From d 10 on, all chickens were exposed to low ambient temperature (12 to 15 degrees C) to induce ascites. 3. The blood packed cell volume and ascites heart index of broiler chickens were reduced by dietary CoQ10 supplementation. Mitochondrial State 3 and State 4 respiration, respiratory control ratio and phosphate oxygen ratio were not changed, but H+/site stoichiometry of complex II + III was elevated by dietary CoQ10 supplementation. 4. Cytochrome c oxidase and H+-ATPase activity were increased by CoQ10 supplementation, whereas NADH cytochrome c reductase and succinate cytochrome c reductase were not influenced. Mitochondrial anti-ROS capability was increased and malondialdehyde content was decreased by CoQ10 supplementation. 5. The work suggested that dietary CoQ10 supplementation could reduce broiler chickens' susceptibility to ascites, which might be the result of improving hepatic mitochondrial function, some respiratory chain-related enzymes activities and mitochondrial antioxidative capability.

Abstract
Two trials were conducted to study the effects of continuous infusion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) on acid-base balance in broiler chickens. Osmotic pumps delivered 8 IU of ACTH in saline/kg of BW/d for 7 d or the same saline volume as used in ACTH at 1 microL/h for 7 d. Blood samples were taken on d 0 (baseline values) and on d 4, 7, and 14 after onset of the infusions. The ACTH treatment increased the hematocrit, partial pressure of CO2, anion gap, corticosterone, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, the blood concentrations of hemoglobin and HCO3-, and reduced the partial pressure of O2, plasma concentrations of Na+, K+, and Cl-. Blood pH values and plasma concentrations of Ca2+ were unaffected by ACTH treatment. The ACTH infusion also resulted in a significant increase in plasma glucose, cholesterone, high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride. There were no differences in any of the blood constituents measured from control groups. Results indicate that infusion of ACTH resulted in changes in plasma acid-base status along with changes in other blood metabolic variables. However, the ACTH treatment did not prevent homeostatic regulation of acid-base balance, as indicated by constant blood pH. There was, however, an increased need for O2 to support gluconeogenic energy production; the birds responded by increased erythropoiesis. This adaptive response provided greater numbers of erythrocytes and thus a higher amount of circulating hemoglobin to deliver O2 for metabolism.

Abstract
In comparison to other classes of chickens, broilers selected for rapid growth tend to be hypoxaemic, and many develop congestive heart failure (CHF). In order to explain the physiological mechanisms associated with hypoxaemia in fast-growing broiler chickens (Gallus gallus), this study examined several basic physiological parameters including the blood gas profile in arterial [left atrial (LA)] and mixed venous [right atrial (RA)] blood, systemic oxygen extraction ratio, and intrapulmonary shunt fraction. These parameters were further studied in the context of blood flow in the pulmonary circulation, structural characteristics of the lungs, and cardiac function [measured as cardiac index (CI)]. Overall, broilers had lower arterial and mixed venous blood pO(2) levels and higher pCO(2) levels compared to leghorns. The cardiac index was lower in fast-growing and CHF broilers compared to leghorn chickens or feed-restricted broilers. Systemic oxygen extraction ratio (ER) and intrapulmonary shunt fraction were significantly higher in fast-growing broilers and birds with CHF (all P<0.01). Lungs of all broilers, but not leghorns, contained ectopic, irregular nodular formations located within air spaces. Broilers with clinical signs of hypoxaemia revealed the highest number of these formations in their lung. Taken together, the present findings indicate that key factors associated with the development of hypoxaemia in fast-growing broilers include: (1) high demand for oxygen as evidenced by high oxygen ER; (2) inadequate cardiac output (CO) to fulfill the higher oxygen demands, leading to severe depletion of O(2) in mixed venous blood; and (3) elevated intrapulmonary shunt fraction and possibly dead space associated with specific pathological and anatomical characteristics within the lung.

Abstract
The ascites syndrome in broiler chickens is attributed to metabolic burdening, which results from intensive genetic selection for rapid growth coupled with exposure to extreme environmental conditions, such as low ambient temperature. These conditions impose on the broilers difficulties in fulfilling tissue demands for oxygen, and the birds exhibit a decrease in blood oxygen saturation and high hematocrit values. It is unknown whether the increase in hematocrit results from alteration in erythropoiesis or from fluid exudation out of the blood system to the abdominal cavity. The present study was conducted to examine the association between abnormal stress response and erythropoiesis process in ascitic broilers. Ascitic chickens revealed a uniquely continuous stress response: expressing an increase (P < or = 0.05) in plasma corticosterone concentration 2 to 3 wk before death. At 5 wk of age, ascitic broilers exhibited an increase (P < 0.05) in hematocrit, blood cell count, and packed cells and blood volumes, with no significant change in plasma volume. These results confirm an accelerated erythropoiesis process in ascitic birds. Increased blood cell production in ascitic birds was matched by an increase (P < 0.05) in the proportion of immature red blood cells (23%) in comparison with broilers that remained healthy (7%), and by decreased (P < 0.05) hemoglobin content relative to red blood cells. We conclude that continually increased corticosterone concentrations, as an inducer of erythropoiesis proliferation and differentiation arrest, in ascitic chickens, resulted in increased production of red blood cells (partially immature) with decreased hemoglobin content; this decrease in hemoglobin might have contributed to enhanced development of hypoxemia and to aggravation of the syndrome.

Abstract
Males and females, selected from a commercial line to represent its phenotypic variation for BW, were mated with similarly ranked mates to produce sire families representing a wide genetic variation in potential growth rate (GR). Following 5 wk of rearing at normal ambient temperatures, birds representing all sire families were exposed to cold (Days 37 to 47, Trial 1) or hot (Days 43 to 48, Trial 2) environments. Birds exhibiting ascites syndrome (AS) in the cold environment (Trial 1) were counted, and the incidence of AS (%AS) per family was calculated. Sire families' least-square means of BW at 37 d of age in Trial 1 and BW at 43 d of age in Trial 2 represented the families' potential GR (i.e., GR under normal conditions). A significant positive correlation was found between potential GR and %AS (r = 0.479, Trial 1), indicating that families with higher potential GR under normal conditions are more likely to suffer from AS under cold stress, compared to families with lower GR. Heat stress markedly reduced weight gain in all families (Trial 2); however, the genetic potential GR was negatively correlated with actual GR under heat stress (r = -0.411, Trial 2). Since offspring of the same sire families were exposed to the two stressful environmental conditions, correlations between sire families' means under the two environments could be calculated. A negative correlation was found between growth under heat stress (Trial 2) and %AS (Trial 1) (r = -0.439), indicating that families whose GR is more depressed under heat stress are more likely to suffer from AS under cold stress. These results suggest that the two stress responses may share similar control of the genetic variation in each trait and their negative genetic correlation with potential GR.

Abstract
The objective of the current study was to compare the changes in a fitness trait when selection is performed for 5, 10, and 20 generations on a production trait that influenced its expression. Responses to single-trait selection for growth based on phenotype or animal model predictions were compared by computer simulation. Two-trait index selection was performed when a trait, related to the fitness trait, was included in the index with the production trait. The phenotypic expression of the fitness trait among the sibs was also considered as a selection factor for single-trait and two-trait index selection. For a fixed increase in the expression of the fitness trait, mass selection produced a larger increase in the production trait than did use of standard animal model best linear unbiased prediction under single-trait selection. The reduction in the genotypic mean of the fitness trait was accompanied by an increase in its phenotypic expression. The use of sib information and an indicator trait reduced the level of expression reached by the fitness trait.

Abstract
The present study examined the association between thyroid hormones and the development of ascites on one hand and the ability to predict ascites from growth rate and hematocrit on the other hand. Ascites syndrome was induced in broiler chickens in two trials by exposing the chicks to low ambient temperature (Ta) and by supplying a pellet form of diet. Weight gain, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and plasma thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations were measured weekly for each bird, and comparisons were made between birds that eventually died from ascites and those that did not. Mortality from ascites amounted to 24.3 and 24.2% in Trials 1 and 2, respectively. Weight gain did not differ between ascitic and healthy chickens up to approximately 2 wk before death but was significantly lower in the ascitic broilers 1 to 2 wk before death. Hematocrit was significantly higher in broilers with ascites with the exception of ascitic broilers that died at the age of 7 wk (Trial 1). In ascitic broilers, T4 and T3 concentrations declined significantly during the week of death. The present findings raise the question of whether the association between low levels of thyroid hormones and the development of ascites is one of the physiological responses in the syndrome cascade, or whether the failure to maintain thyroid hormones concentration is one of the triggers of the syndrome initiation. This question requires further investigation. It can be concluded that a high rate of weight gain is not always a good predictor of ascites development. Hematocrit and thyroid hormones can provide a good indication but only during the last week of life, and not in all cases. None of these parameters, however, can predict the development of ascites at an early age.

Abstract
1. The present study examined the effects of the addition of 100 mg/kg L-carnitine to the basal starter (containing 17.8 mg/kg L-carnitine) and finisher (containing 22.9 mg/kg L-carnitine) diets on performance, organ weights and plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations of male and female broiler chickens. The broiler chickens were reared either in a room with a normal temperature (NT) program or with a low temperature (LT) program (rapid decrease from 28 degrees C to 20 degrees C at 14 d of age). 2. Broiler chickens reared under the LT schedule consumed more food and attained a greater body weight at 42 d of age than their counterparts reared under NT schedule, without any difference in food efficiency or abdominal fat content. Dietary L-carnitine supplementation had no significant effects on any of these production parameters, except for a reduction in the abdominal fat content of female NT chickens. However, the LT schedule and dietary L-carnitine supplementation greatly increased absolute and proportional heart weights. The elevated heart weights were not due to right ventricle hypertrophy. 3. Both the LT program and L-carnitine supplementation increased circulating plasma triiodothyronine concentrations. There were also some transient effects of both experimental variables on plasma growth hormone, glucose and triglyceride concentrations. 4. L-carnitine did not improve broiler performance. However, this result does not mean that L-carnitine supplementation cannot have beneficial effects in other circumstances. In view of the elevated proportional heart weights, it can also be argued that L-carnitine is a potential agent for reducing the incidence of metabolic diseases in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Within-line opportunities for selection against ascites were studied in a data set comprising a 10-line comparison. The study attempted to reveal whether contrasts between lines provide reliable candidate traits for within-line selection. Mortality was chosen as the reference trait. As no pedigree information was available, a trait was required that related mortality to the nonmortality data. By principal component analysis, such a trait (ASC_INDIC = ascites indicator) was developed from pathology data. The composite trait ASC_INDIC ranked lines well for their mortality figures (r = 0.96), from which it was concluded that ASC_INDIC represents an underlying continuous ascites trait. Between lines, blood gas traits seemed to be the most promising traits. Within lines, performance traits appeared to be highly correlated to ascites. Comparison of within-line variation to between-line contrasts revealed considerable differences. The high correlation of the blood gas traits with mortality was not present within lines. However, although the magnitude was considerably reduced, the nature of the blood gas traits in their relationship to ascites was similar within and between lines. The study primarily demonstrates that contrasts between lines carry systematic but limited information for within-line coherence. Therefore, line contrasts must be interpreted with care when aiming to study genetic variation and coherence within lines.

Abstract
O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o desenvolvimento de ascites em duas linhagens diferentes de frangos de corte, Hubbard e Pescoço-pelado, através da variação da viscosidade do sangue. As aves foram criadas até 45 dias de idade em duas temperaturas ambiente diferentes (termoneutra e fria) e com dieta de ração à base de milho e farelo de soja, peletizada e de alta energia. Aos 28 e 45 dias de idade, amostras de 8 mL de sangue foram obtidas para determinação da viscosidade aparente em um viscosímetro de cilindros concêntricos da marca Brookfield, modelo LVDII+ e para determinação do hematócrito. Aos 28 dias de idade foram verificadas algumas ocorrências de ascite nas aves da linhagem Hubbard criadas à temperatura ambiente fria, e aos 45 dias de idade, todos os frangos de corte dessa linhagem criados no ambiente frio apresentaram ascite. A linhagem Pescoço-pelado foi resistente ao desenvolvimento de ascite em todas as idades e temperaturas ambiente. A análise dos resultados da viscosidade aparente do sangue indicaram que aves com valores similares ou maiores que 4 cP (centipoise) apresentaram ascite. Podemos concluir que na linhagem comercial o valor de 4 cP para a viscosidade aparente parece identificar o desenvolvimento de ascite.

Heat production (Hp), oxygen consumption (Oxc) and energy- metabolism parameters were calculated according to the comparative slaughter method. At week 4 blood samples were taken for the analysis of plasma T4, T3, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) concentrations. 3. Within-line changes of GH and IGF-1 point to the relative independence of both hormone concentrations. 4. Partial protein efficiency was higher in lines with lower GH, especially at LT. 5. The increase in plasma T3 concentration at LT was accompanied by a decrease in relative fat deposition from the increased energy expenditure. 6. The combination of fast growth and low FCR, linked to a low plasma T4 concentration at LT is indicative of a thyroid insufficiency which is related to an increased occurrence of ascites in these lines.
