Influence of virtual keyboard design and usage posture on typing performance and muscle activity during tablet interaction

Design guidelines for limiting and eliminating virtual reality-induced symptoms and effects at work: a comprehensive, factor-oriented review

Virtual reality (VR) can induce side effects known as virtual reality-induced symptoms and effects (VRISE). To address this concern, we identify a literature-based listing of these factors thought to influence VRISE with a focus on office work use. Using those, we recommend guidelines for VRISE amelioration intended for virtual environment creators and users. We identify five VRISE risks, focusing on short-term symptoms with their short-term effects. Three overall factor categories are considered: individual, hardware, and software. Over 90 factors may influence VRISE frequency and severity. We identify guidelines for each factor to help reduce VR side effects. To better reflect our confidence in those guidelines, we graded each with a level of evidence rating. Common factors occasionally influence different forms of VRISE. This can lead to confusion in the literature. General guidelines for using VR at work involve worker adaptation, such as limiting immersion times to between 20 and 30 min. These regimens involve taking regular breaks. Extra care is required for workers with special needs, neurodiversity, and gerontechnological concerns. In addition to following our guidelines, stakeholders should be aware that current head-mounted displays and virtual environments can continue to induce VRISE. While no single existing method fully alleviates VRISE, workers' health and safety must be monitored and safeguarded when VR is used at work.

Use of an inflatable mat to reduce body discomfort development when performing computer work at a standing desk

This study aimed to determine the effects of inflatable mat design on body discomfort, task performance, and musculoskeletal exposures during standing computer work. Twenty-seven healthy adults completed three 2-hour standing trials on different mediums (concrete floor, foam mat, and inflatable mat) on different days in an experimental laboratory. Both mats were associated with reduced discomfort in all lower-body regions and increased typing performance compared to the concrete floor. Perceived discomfort in lower extremities (except thighs) was further alleviated while standing on the inflatable mat than on the foam mat. Use of the inflatable mat led to increased lower-body muscle activity, a flexed lower back, and a wide range of sagittal knee movements. As standing time increased, body discomfort increased, typing accuracy decreased, and there were increased variations in muscle activity and postural movements in the lower body. The inflatable mat shows potential to improve the ergonomic experience during prolonged standing. Practitioner summary: Incorporating standing postures in office-based workplaces can reduce sitting time and may mitigate the health hazards associated with sedentary behaviour. With adequate weight-shifting movements, using an inflatable mat for standing could be an effective way to lessen discomfort and accumulated musculoskeletal strain due to constrained standing, without jeopardising task productivity. Impact of digital boards on hand and neck muscle activity during online teaching process

Academicians across the globe due to Covid 19 shifted to online teaching as a mainstream method by replacing the chalk and talk method. The main objective of this study is to find the impact of different sizes of digital boards used for online teaching on muscle activity and muscle fatigue, and then results are compared with conventional writing. Initially, a questionnaire survey is conducted among 100 college professors about the issue they faced while using online teaching methods. Experimental analysis are then conducted using electromyography sensor (sEMG) among ten college professors and their muscle activity on the dominant hand and neck while writing on two commercially available digital boards namely Type 1 (small writing area) and Type 2 (large writing area). Four muscles namely Flexor carpi radialis, Extensor carpi radialis, Biceps brachii, and Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) are chosen for the study. The results are then compared with muscle activity while writing on conventional A4 sheets. Normalized root mean square (RMS) is used to assess the muscle activity and the trend line of MPF value is utilized to assess the muscle fatigue. The results show that SCM muscle has more muscle activation compared to other selected muscles followed by flexor carpi radialis. Subjective analysis is carried out using the Borg scale, which has reported that Type 2 digital board having larger working area was preferred by the participants as it reduces muscle fatigue.

An investigation of an ergonomics intervention to affect neck biomechanics and pain associated with smartphone use

BACKGROUND

Neck discomfort and pronounced neck flexion have been associated with smartphone use.

OBJECTIVE

Eye glasses with a 90 deg prism in each lens were investigated as a potential intervention to reduce awkward head and neck postures during activities involving viewing the device.

METHODS

Sixteen smartphone users with neck pain and 9 asymptomatic users performed a texting task on a smartphone with and without the prism glasses, in sitting and standing postures in a laboratory setting.

RESULTS

Cervical erector spinae and upper trapezius muscle activity, head posture and motion, performance, discomfort and other subjective perceptions were assessed. Prism glasses reduced neck extensor muscle activity, neck flexion, and head tilt compared to the direct view. In the symptomatic group, the intervention produced less neck and shoulder discomfort compared to the direct view.

CONCLUSIONS

This intervention could offer an alternative way of interacting with a smartphone while texting in stationary postures, by reducing exposure to pronounced flexed neck and head posture commonly seen in users, and thereby could reduce neck discomfort associated with smartphone use.
