Abstract
Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) processes are widely exploited in the designing of organic materials for multifarious applications. This work explores the aftereffects of combining both ESIPT and ICT events in a single molecule, namely, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (BSP) exploiting DFT and TD-DFT formalisms. The PBE0 functional employed in the present study is found to yield results with better accuracy for excited-state calculations. The results reveal that introduction of electron donor (-NH2) and electron acceptor (-NO2) substituents on BSP produces a strikingly red-shifted emission with respect to the corresponding emission from the unsubstituted analogue in polar solvents. This red-shifted emission originated due to the coupled effect of ESIPT and planar-ICT (PICT) processes from the coplanar geometry adopted by the substituted molecule (s-BSP). Based on the computed potential energy curves, the ground-state intramolecular proton transfer (GSIPT) was found to take place more favorably in s-BSP than in BSP under all solvent conditions. In the case of ESIPT, the barrier and relative energies of the phototautomers of s-BSP were slightly higher than BSP, which shows that simultaneous substitution of -NH2 and -NO2 groups causes slight perturbation to the ESIPT process. Overall, the computed results show that simultaneous substitution of suitable electron donor and acceptor substituents provides profitable changes in the photophysical properties of ESIPT molecules like BSP. These molecular-level insights will pave way for designing better materials for diverse applications.

Abstract
A fluorescent metallogel has been synthesized from non-fluorescent ingredients viz. the smallest possible LMW aromatic symmetrical gelator 1 and LiOH, whereas KOH produces a non-fluorescent solution, and regioisomer 2 with LiOH shows an ICT assisted fluorescent precipitate rather than a metallogel.

Abstract
A variety of organic donor–acceptor–donor materials based on thienylbenzothiadiazole (BTD[Formula: see text]–5) combined with different [Formula: see text]-conjugated systems are studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) for the ground- and excited-state properties, respectively, using B3LYP and the 6-31G(d, p) basis set. The effect of different electron-donor groups on the structural, electronic and optoelectronic properties is studied. To provide for the bandgap and to guide the synthesis of novel low bandgap materials, we applied quantum chemistry techniques to calculate the difference in the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest occupied molecular orbital LUMO energies. However, we have studied the effect of the reduction and oxidation properties on the electronic excitation transitions for all compounds. The emission energies have been obtained from TD-DFT calculations performed on the excited-state optimized S1 geometries. The theoretical results suggest that both the introduction of electron-donor groups and the doping process contribute significantly to the electronic and optoelectronic properties of the alternating donor–acceptor–donor conjugated systems studied.

Abstract
Polythiophene (PTh) and its derivatives are polymer-based materials with aπ-conjugation framework. PTh is a useful photoelectric material and can be used in organic semiconductor devices, such as PLED, OLED, and solar cells. Their properties are based on molecular structure; the derivatives contain different substitutes in the 3 and 5 positions, such as electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups. All molecular geometries were optimized at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The energy gap (Egap) between the HOMO and LUMO levels is related to theπ-conjugation in the PTh polymer backbone. In this study, the DFT calculations were performed for the nonsubstituted and 3,5-substituted variants to investigate the stability geometries and electrical properties. The theoretical calculations show that the substituted forms are stable, have lowEgap, and are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Abstract
This work presents a combined experimental and theoretical study on an ortho-hydroxy Schiff base compound, (E)-5-(diethylamino)-2-[(4-propylphenylimino)methyl]phenol. The crystal structure and spectroscopic properties of the compound have been determined by using X-ray diffraction, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques. The electronic structure, vibrational frequencies and electronic absorption spectra have been investigated from the calculative point of view. A relaxed potential energy surface scan has been performed based on the optimized geometry of OH tautomeric form to describe the potential energy barrier belonging to intramolecular proton transfer and to observe the effects of transfer on the molecular geometry. The second-order nonlinear optical properties have been investigated based on the first static hyperpolarizability (β) by using the density functional theory.

Abstract
The photophysics of N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-p-phenylenediamine (BSP) is analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. The alternative intramolecular proton-transfer reactions lead to three different tautomers. We performed DFT and TDDFT calculations to analyze the topography of the reactions connecting the three tautomers. Deactivation paths through a Conical Intersection (CI) region are also analyzed to explain the low fluorescence quantum yield of the phototautomers. The complex molecular structure of BSP provides a large number of deactivation paths, almost all of them energetically available following the initial photoexcitation. Femtosecond (fs) time-resolved emission studies in solution and flash photolysis experiments (nano to millisecond regime) were performed to get detailed information on the time domain of the full photocycle. The picture that emerges by combining theoretical and experimental results shows a very fast (less than 100 fs) photoinduced single proton transfer process leading to a phototautomer where a single proton has moved. This species may deactivate through a low-energy CI leading in about 20 ps to a rotameric form in the ground state that has a lifetime of several tens of microseconds in solution. This process competes with another deactivation path taking place prior to the proton-transfer reaction which involves a low-energy CI leading to a rotamer of the enol structure. In the flash photolysis studies, the rotamer of the enol structure was directly identified by the positive transient absorption band in the 250-260 nm and its lifetime in n-hexane (10 ms) is almost 3 orders of magnitude longer than the lifetime of the photochrome (around 40 μs). Our findings do not exclude a double proton transfer reaction in the excited enol form to give a tautomer in less than 100 fs during the first (impulsive) phase of the reaction which reverts back to the photoproducts of the simple proton transfer in 1-3 ps.
