Abstract
The ultrafast relaxation dynamics of tetracene following UV excitation to the bright singlet state S6 has been studied with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. With the help of high-level ab initio multireference perturbation theory calculations, we assign photoelectron signals to intermediate dark electronic states S3, S4, and S5 as well as to a low-lying electronic state S2. The energetic structure of these dark states has not been determined experimentally previously. The time-dependent photoelectron yields assigned to the states S6, S5, and S4 have been analyzed and reveal the depopulation of S6 within 60 fs, while S5 and S4 are populated with delays of about 50 and 80 fs. The dynamics of the lower-lying states S3 and S2 seem to agree with a delayed population coinciding with the depopulation of the higher-lying states S4-S6 but could not be elucidated in full detail due to the low signal levels of the corresponding two-photon ionization probe processes.

Abstract
CONTEXT The effects of selected substituent groups (-CH3, -Br, -CO2CH3, -COOH, and -NH2) and their relative positions on the electronic and structural properties of mono-substituted naphthalenes were investigated theoretically. In order to elucidate the suitability of the studied substituents in different fields including chemistry, spectroscopy, and materials sciences, accurate DFT calculations were performed at the dispersion-corrected B3LYP level of theory (B3LYP-D3/6-311 + + G(d,p)), and the obtained results were then validated by extensive comparisons with available experimental data. Among the studied substituents, the -NH2 group causes the maximum reduction of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. This result revealed clearly the suitability of the -NH2 group, compared to other studied substituents, in the chemical synthesis of future organic-semiconductors having small energy gaps. In addition, the level of theory adopted in this study allowed the fine discrimination between the chemical reactivity parameters of the studied congeners, which is very difficult to perform experimentally. On the other hand, the rotational barriers of the studied non-halogen substituent groups were predicted. The greater sensitivity of the rotational barrier heights to the local environments, arising from intra-molecular interactions, was attributed to the -CH3 group. The torsional frequencies, calculated within the harmonic approximation, were also employed to relatively explore the differences between the environments of the same substituent at two different positions. The usefulness of these results can be manifested in the vibrational spectroscopy field, especially, for the IR/ Raman spectral analysis of polycyclic-aromatic congeners. METHOD All calculations were conducted within the Density functional theory (DFT) using the so-called dispersion-corrected B3LYP functional (B3LYP-D3) with the carefully selected 6-311 + + G(d,p) basis set. The B3LYP-D3/6-311 + + G(d,p) calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09 program, and the obtained results were visualized by employing the GaussView 6.0.16 program.

Impact of Di- and Poly-Radical Characters on the Relative

Abstract
Linear and cyclic acenes are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that can be viewed as building blocks of graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes, respectively. While short linear acenes demonstrated remarkable efficiency in several optoelectronic applications, the longer members are unstable and difficult to synthesize as their cyclic counterparts. Recent progress in on-surface synthesis, a powerful tool to prepare highly reactive species, opens promising perspectives and motivates the computational investigations of these potentially functional molecules. Owing to their di- and poly-radical character, low-lying excited states dominated by doubly excited configurations are expected to become more important for longer members of both linear and cyclic molecules. In this work, we investigate the lowest-lying La and the doubly excited (DE) state of linear acenes and cyclacenes, with different computational approaches, to assess the influence of the di-/poly-radical characters (increasing with the molecular dimensions) on their relative order. We show that DFT/MRCI calculations correctly reproduce the crossing of the two states for longer linear acenes, while TDUDFT calculations fail to predict the correct excitation energy trend of the DE state. The study suggests a similarity in the excited electronic state pattern of long linear and cyclic acenes leading ultimately to a lowest lying dark DE state for both.

Abstract
A family of non-empirical double-hybrid (DH) density functionals, such as Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE)0-DH, PBE-QIDH, and their range-separated exchange (RSX) versions RSX-0DH and RSX-QIDH, all using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) exchange and correlationfunctionals, is applied here to calculate the excitation energies for increasingly longer linear and cyclic acenes as part of their intense benchmarking for excited states of all types. The energies for the two lowest-lying singlet 1La and 1Lb states of linear oligoacenes as well as the triplet 3La and 3Lb states, are calculated and compared with experimental results. These functionals clearly outperform the results obtained from hybrid functionals and favorably compare with other double-hybrid expressions also tested here, such as B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, ωB2-PLYP, and ωB2GP-PLYP. The study is complemented by the computation of adiabatic S0-T1 singlet-triplet energy difference for linear acenes as well as the extension of the study to strained cyclic oligomers, showing how the family of non-empirical expressions robustly leads to competitive results.

Abstract
Intermolecular interactions modulate the electro-optical properties of molecular materials and the nature of low-lying exciton states. Molecular materials composed by oligoacenes are extensively investigated for their semiconducting and optoelectronic properties. Here, we analyze the exciton states derived from time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations for two oligoacene model aggregates: naphthalene and anthracene dimers. To unravel the role of inter-molecular interactions, a set of diabatic states is selected, chosen to coincide with local (LE) and charge-transfer (CT) excitations within a restricted orbital space including two occupied and two unoccupied orbitals for each molecular monomer. We study energy profiles and disentangle inter-state couplings to disclose the (CT) character of singlet and triplet exciton states and assess the influence of inter-molecular orientation by displacing one molecule with respect to the other along the longitudinal translation coordinate. The analysis shows that (CT) contributions are relevant, although comparably less effective for triplet excitons, and induce a non-negligible mixed character to the low-lying exciton states for eclipsed monomers and for small translational displacements. Such (CT) contributions govern the La/Lb state inversion occurring for the low-lying singlet exciton states of naphthalene dimer and contribute to the switch from H- to J-aggregate type of the strongly allowed Bb transition of both oligoacene aggregates.

Abstract
Chemical databases are an essential tool for data-driven investigation of structure-property relationships and for the design of novel functional compounds. We introduce the first phase of the COMPAS Project─a COMputational database of Polycyclic Aromatic Systems. In this phase, we developed two data sets containing the optimized ground-state structures and a selection of molecular properties of ∼34k and ∼9k cata-condensed polybenzenoid hydrocarbons (at the GFN2-xTB and B3LYP-D3BJ/def2-SVP levels, respectively) and placed them in the public domain. Herein, we describe the process of the data set generation, detail the information available within the data sets, and show the fundamental features of the generated data. We analyze the correlation between the two types of computations as well as the structure-property relationships of the calculated species. The data and insights gained from them can inform rational design of novel functional aromatic molecules for use in, e.g., organic electronics, and can provide a basis for additional data-driven machine- and deep-learning studies in chemistry.

Abstract
Molecular symmetry is vital to the selection rule of vibrationally resolved electronic transition, particularly when the nuclear dependence of electronic wave function is explicitly treated by including Franck-Condon (FC) factor, Franck-Condon/Herzberg-Teller (FC/HT) interference, and Herzberg-Teller (HT) coupling. Our present study investigated the light absorption spectra of highly symmetric tetracene, pentacene, and hexacene molecules of point-group D2h, as well as their monobrominated derivatives with a lower Cs symmetry. It was found that the symmetry-breaking monobromination allows more vibrational normal modes and their pairs to contribute to FC/HT interference and HT coupling, respectively. Through a projection of a molecule's vibrational normal modes to its irreducible representations, a linear relationship between the FC/HT intensity to the polyacene's size was deduced alongside a quadratic dependence of the HT intensity. Both theoretically derived correlations were well justified by our numerical simulations, which also demonstrated an approximately 20% improvement on the agreement with experimental line shape if the HT theory is adopted to replace the FC approximation. Moreover, for these low-symmetry monobrominated polyacenes, the FC intensity was even weaker than its FC/HT and HT counterparts at some excitation energies, making the HT theory imperative to decipher vibronic coupling, a fundamental driving force behind numerous chemical, biological, and photophysical processes.

Abstract
Excitons in the molecular aggregates of chromophores are key participants in important processes such as photosynthesis or the functioning of organic photovoltaic devices. Therefore, the exploration of exciton dynamics is crucial. Here we report on exciton localization during excited-state dynamics of the recently synthesized tetracene trimer [Liu et al., Org. Lett., 2017, 19, 580]. We employ the surface hopping approach to nonadiabatic molecular dynamics in conjunction with the long-range corrected time-dependent density functional tight binding (LC-TDDFTB) method [Humeniuk and Mitrić, Comput. Phys. Commun., 2017, 221, 174]. Utilizing a set of descriptors based on the transition density matrix, we perform comprehensive analysis of exciton dynamics. The obtained results reveal an ultrafast exciton localization to a single tetracene unit of the trimer during excited-state dynamics, along with exciton transfer between units.

Abstract
In this work CASPT2 calculations of polyacenes (from naphthalene to heptacene) were performed to find a methodology suitable for calculations of the absorption spectra, in particular of the La (B2u state) and Lb (B3u state) bands, of more extended systems. The effect of the extension of the active space and of freezing σ orbitals was investigated. The MCSCF excitation energy of the B2u state is not sensitive to the size of the active space used. However, the CASPT2 results depend strongly on the amount of σ orbitals frozen reflecting the ionic character of the B2u state. On the other hand, the excitation energies of the B3u state are much more sensitive to the size of the active space used in the calculations reflecting its multiconfigurational character. We found a good agreement with experimental data for both bands by including 14 electrons in 14 π orbitals in the active space followed by the CASPT2(14,14) perturbation scheme in which both σ and π orbitals are included.

Abstract
The accurate prediction of singlet and triplet excitation energies is an area of intense research of significant fundamental interest and critical for many applications. Most calculations of singlet and triplet energies use time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in conjunction with an approximate exchange-correlation functional. In this work, we examine and critically assess an alternative method for predicting low-lying neutral excitations with similar computational cost, the ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach, and compare results against high-accuracy wavefunction-based methods. We consider singlet and triplet excitations of 27 prototypical organic molecules, including members of Thiel's set, the acene series, and several aromatic hydrocarbons exhibiting charge-transfer-like excitations. Analogous to its impact in TDDFT, we find that the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) overcomes triplet instabilities in the BSE approach, improving both triplet and singlet energetics relative to higher level theories. Finally, we find that BSE-TDA calculations built on effective DFT starting points, such as those utilizing optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals, can yield accurate singlet and triplet excitation energies for gas-phase organic molecules.

Abstract
We introduced two methods to correct the singularity in the calculation of long-range Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange for long-range-corrected density functional theory (LC-DFT) calculations in plane-wave basis sets. The first method introduces an auxiliary function to cancel out the singularity. The second method introduces a truncated long-range Coulomb potential, which has no singularity. We assessed the introduced methods using the LC-BLYP functional by applying it to isolated systems of naphthalene and pyridine. We first compared the total energies and the HOMO energies of the singularity-corrected and uncorrected calculations and confirmed that singularity correction is essential for LC-DFT calculations using plane-wave basis sets. The LC-DFT calculation results converged rapidly with respect to the cell size as the other functionals, and their results were in good agreement with the calculated results obtained using Gaussian basis sets. LC-DFT succeeded in obtaining accurate orbital energies and excitation energies. We next applied LC-DFT with singularity correction methods to the electronic structure calculations of the extended systems, Si and SiC. We confirmed that singularity correction is important for calculations of extended systems as well. The calculation results of the valence and conduction bands by LC-BLYP showed good convergence with respect to the number of k points sampled. The introduced methods succeeded in overcoming the singularity problem in HF exchange calculation. We investigated the effect of the singularity correction on the excitation state calculation and found that careful treatment of the singularities is required compared to ground-state calculations. We finally examined the excitonic effect on the band gap of the extended systems. We calculated the excitation energies to the first excited state of the extended systems using a supercell model at the Γ point and found that the excitonic binding energy, supposed to be small for inorganic semiconductors, was quite large. Our findings suggest that more investigation on the effect of the excitonic binding energy on band gaps is necessary.

Abstract
Third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of polymethine dyes have been widely studied for applications such as all-optical switching. However, the limited accuracy of the current computational methodologies has prevented a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the lowest excited states and their influence on the molecular optical and NLO properties. Here, attention is paid to the lowest excited-state energies and their energetic ratio, as these characteristics impact the figure-of-merit for all-optical switching. For a series of model polymethines, we compare several algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) schemes for the polarization propagator with approximate second-order coupled cluster (CC2) theory, the widely used INDO/MRDCI approach and the symmetry-adapted cluster configuration interaction (SAC-CI) algorithm incorporating singles and doubles linked excitation operators (SAC-CI SD-R). We focus in particular on the ground-to-excited state transition dipole moments and the corresponding state dipole moments, since these quantities are found to be of utmost importance for an effective description of the third-order polarizability γ and two-photon absorption spectra. A sum-overstates expression has been used, which is found to quickly converge. While ADC(3/2) has been found to be the most appropriate method to calculate these properties, CC2 performs poorly.

Abstract
Higher acenes have drawn much attention as promising organic semiconductors with versatile electronic properties. However, the nature of their ground state and electronic excited states is still not fully clear. Their unusual chemical reactivity and instability are the main obstacles for experimental studies, and the potentially prominent diradical character, which might require a multireference description in such large systems, hinders theoretical investigations. Here, we provide a detailed answer with the particle-particle random-phase approximation calculation. The (1)Ag ground states of acenes up to decacene are on the closed-shell side of the diradical continuum, whereas the ground state of undecacene and dodecacene tilts more to the open-shell side with a growing polyradical character. The ground state of all acenes has covalent nature with respect to both short and long axes. The lowest triplet state (3)B2u is always above the singlet ground state even though the energy gap could be vanishingly small in the polyacene limit. The bright singlet excited state (1)B2u is a zwitterionic state to the short axis. The excited (1)Ag state gradually switches from a double-excitation state to another zwitterionic state to the short axis, but always keeps its covalent nature to the long axis. An energy crossing between the (1)B2u and excited (1)Ag states happens between hexacene and heptacene. Further energetic consideration suggests that higher acenes are likely to undergo singlet fission with a low photovoltaic efficiency; however, the efficiency might be improved if a singlet fission into multiple triplets could be achieved.

Abstract
![]()
The
description of low-lying ππ* states of linear acenes
by standard electronic structure methods is known to be challenging.
Here, we broaden the framework of this problem by considering a set
of fused heteroaromatic rings and demonstrate that standard electronic
structure methods do not provide a balanced description of the two
(typically) lowest singlet state (La and Lb)
excitations. While the Lb state is highly sensitive to
correlation effects, La suffers from the same drawbacks
as charge transfer excitations. We show that the comparison between
CIS/CIS(D) can serve as a diagnostic for detecting the two problematic
excited states. Standard TD-DFT and even its spin-flip variant lead
to inaccurate excitation energies and interstate gaps, with only a
double hybrid functional performing somewhat better. The complication
inherent to a balanced description of these states is so important
that even CC2 and ADC(2) do not necessarily match the ADC(3) reference.

Abstract
The attosecond, time-resolved X-ray double-quantum-coherence four-wave mixing signals of formamide at the nitrogen and oxygen K-edges are simulated using restricted excitation window time-dependent density functional theory and the excited core hole approximation. These signals, induced by core exciton coupling, are particularly sensitive to the level of treatment of electron correlation, thus providing direct experimental signatures of electron and core-hole many-body effects and a test of electronic structure theories.

Abstract
Collecting energy for photosystem II is facilitated by several pigments, xanthophylls and chlorophylls, embedded in the light harvesting complex II (LHCII). One xanthophyll, violaxanthin (Vio), is loosely bound at a site close to a chlorophyll b (Chl). No final answer has yet been found for the role of this specific xanthophyll. We study the electronic structure of Vio in the presence of Chl and under the influence of the LHCII environment, represented by a point charge field (PCF). We compare the capability of the long range corrected density functional theory (DFT) functional CAM-B3LYP to B3LYP for the modeling of the UV/vis spectrum of the Vio+Chl pair. CAM-B3LYP was reported to allow for a very realistic reproduction of bond length alternation of linear polyenes, which has considerable impact on the carotenoid structure and spectrum. To account for the influence of the LHCII environment, the chromophore geometries are optimized using an ONIOM(DFT/6-31G(d):PM6) scheme. Our calculations show that the energies of the locally excited states are almost unaffected by the presence of the partner chromophore or the PCF. There are, however, indications for excitonic coupling of the Chl Soret band and Vio. We propose that Vio may accept energy from blue-light excited Chl.
