Abstract
A highly efficient, catalyst-free, metal-free, atom economical green protocol for the synthesis of arylthio/arylamino methylene compounds by a Michael attack of arylthiols and anilines on nitroolefins derived from acenaphthaquinone and isatin has been developed. The method needs methanol as a reaction solvent and does not require any recrystallization, work-up process or column chromatography. (E)-Arylthio alkenes and (Z)-arylamino alkenes were obtained as the sole products. The results obtained from computational studies using density functional theory on ORCA program (B3LYP/def2-SVP level) are in good agreement with the data obtained from the single crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract
The applications of 2-hydroxy-β-nitrostyrenes as efficient bifunctional intermediates in organic synthesis are investigated in this review. For this purpose, reactions of 2-hydroxy-β-nitrostyrenes with diverse molecules, including carbonyl compounds, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, hemiacetals, nitroalkenes, γ-butenolides, tetronic acid, azalactones, pyrazolones, enamines, malononitrile, methyleneindolinones, ylides, etc., were investigated to construct interesting biologically active scaffolds such as chromans, chromenes, coumarins, benzofurans and their fused and spiro rings, natural products, and other useful cyclic and acyclic compounds. The main focus is on the asymmetric synthesis of these compounds via cascade/domino/tandem reactions catalyzed by chiral organocatalysts. In this review, around 60 papers reported between the years 2000 and 2022 are presented.

Abstract
A highly chemoselective conversion of α,β-disubstituted nitroalkenes to ketones is developed. An acid-compatible iridium catalyst serves as the key to the conversion. At a 2500 S/C ratio, nitroalkenes were readily converted to ketones in up to 72% isolated yields. A new mechanistic mode involving the reduction of nitroalkene to nitrosoalkene and N-alkenyl hydroxylamine is proposed. This conversion is ready to amplify to a gram-scale synthesis. The pH value plays an indispensable role in controlling the chemoselectivity.

Abstract
In this article we report on the mechanistic studies of the Michael addition of amines and hydrazines to nitrostyrenes. Under the present conditions, the corresponding N-alkyl/aryl substituted benzyl imines and N-methyl/phenyl substituted benzyl hydrazones were observed via a retro-aza-Henry-type process. By combining organic synthesis and characterization experiments with computational chemistry calculations, we reveal that this reaction proceeds via a protic solvent-mediated mechanism. Experiments in deuterated methanol CD3OD reveal the synthesis and isolation of the corresponding deuterated intermediated Michael adduct, results that support the proposed slovent-mediated pathway. From the synthetic point of view, the reaction occurs under mild, noncatalytic conditions and can be used as a useful platform to yield the biologically important N-methyl pyrazoles in a one-pot manner, simple starting with the corresponding nitrostyrenes and the methylhydrazine.

Abstract
β-Asarone (2, 4, 5-trimethoxy-(Z)-1-propenylbenzene) was obtained from Acorus calamus. Nitration of β-asarone with AgNO2/I2 in ether yielded 1-(2, 4, 5-trimethoxy phenyl)-2-nitropropene (1) but with NaNO2/I2 in ethylene glycol obtained 1-(2, 4, 5-trimethoxy phenyl)-1-nitropropene (2). Compound 2 was prepared for the first time and characterized using IR, (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR, and GC-MS spectra and it was converted into 1-(2, 4, 5-trimethoxy) phenyl-1-propanone (3) using modified Nef reaction. Based on 1D NOESY experiments, compounds 1 and 2 have been assigned E configuration. Compounds 1 and 2 were subjected to cytotoxic activity using five human cancer cell lines, namely, MCF-7, SW-982, HeLa, PC-3, and IMR-32 by MTT assay. Except in breast cancer line (MCF-7) compound 2 exhibited five- to tenfold increase in activity compared to β-asarone and twofold increase over compound 1.

Abstract
A collective synthesis of 8,14-dihydronorsalutaridine, 8,14-dihydrosalutaridine, norisosinomenine, and isosinomenine is reported. The strategy provides direct access to the correct oxidation level of the products. The combination of an organocatalyst guanidine superbase, a tertiary amine base, and a dehydrating agent was necessary for the successful Henry-Michael-dehydration cascade to form the phenanthrene motif. The required selective aliphatic nitro reduction could only be achieved under heterogeneous transfer-hydrogenation conditions.

Abstract
Dianions of chiral nitro imines (generated by a combination of LDA and s-BuLi) underwent diastereoselective alkylation with methyl, butyl, isopropyl, allyl, and methallyl iodides. In contrast to the behavior of simple metalloenamines, the most selective auxiliary contained no coordinating groups but did possess a large steric difference between the two substituents. The yield and selectivity of the alkylations were improved by the addition of HMPA or DMPU. The use of (S)-1-naphthylethylamine as the auxiliary afforded the R absolute configuration of the alkylation products. This stereochemical outcome could be rationalized by simple steric approach controlled alkylation in a conformationally fixed, internally coordinated dianion. A SAMP nitro hydrazone gave poorer yields and selectivities.

Abstract
The Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) type reaction of a variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic conjugated nitroalkenes with formaldehyde in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of imidazole and catalytic amounts (10 mol %) of anthranilic acid at room temperature provided the corresponding hydroxymethylated derivatives in moderate to good yield. The parent nitroalkenes and their MBH adducts were subsequently screened for their anticancer activity. Some of the MBH adducts were found to inhibit cervical cancer (HeLa) cell proliferation at low micromolar concentrations with half-maximal inhibitory concentrations in the range of 1-2 microM. The antiproliferative activity of 3-((E)-2-nitrovinyl)furan and three potent MBH adducts, namely, hydroxymethylated derivatives of 3-((E)-2-nitrovinyl)thiophene, 1-methoxy-4-((E)-2-nitrovinyl)benzene, and 1,2-dimethoxy-4-((E)-2-nitrovinyl)benzene was correlated well with their antimicrotubule activity. At their effective concentration range, the tested compounds perturbed the organization of mitotic spindle microtubules and chromosomes. In the presence of hydroxymethylated nitroalkenes, abnormal bipolar or multipolar mitotic spindles were apparent. Interphase microtubules were found to be significantly depolymerized at relatively higher concentrations of the tested compounds. These compounds inhibited tubulin assembly into microtubules in vitro by binding to tubulin at a site distinct from the vinblastine and colchicine binding sites. The compounds reduced the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence of tubulin and the fluorescence of tubulin-1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (ANS) complex indicating that they induced conformational changes in the tubulin. The results suggest that hydroxymethylated nitroalkenes exert their antiproliferative activity at least in part by depolymerizing cellular microtubules through tubulin binding and indicate that hydroxymethylated nitroalkenes are promising lead compounds for cancer therapy.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction of a variety of conjugated nitroalkenes with activated nonenolizable carbonyl compounds such as glyoxylate, trifluoropyruvate, pyruvaldehyde, and ninhydrin in the presence of 40-100 mol % of DMAP in acetonitrile or 100 mol % of imidazole in CHCl(3) or THF provided the adducts in decent to good yields. In most cases, the reactions catalyzed by DMAP in acetonitrile were faster and provided the desired MBH adducts in higher yields as compared to the imidazole catalyzed reactions.

Abstract
The enantioselective conjugate addition of diethylzinc to the activated nitroolefin methyl 3-nitropropenoate is efficiently catalyzed by copper(I) complexes with BINOL-based enantiopure phosphoramidite ligands. The nitroolefin moiety acts as the predominant Michael acceptor, giving rise to the unambiguous formation of 2-alkyl-3-nitro-propanoates. Moderate to excellent enantioselectivities and high chemical yields are obtained. The product can easily be transformed into a beta(2)-homoamino acid. [reaction--see text]

Abstract
Chlorins provide the basis for plant photosynthesis, but synthetic model systems have generally employed porphyrins as surrogates due to the unavailability of suitable chlorin building blocks. We have adapted a route pioneered by Battersby to gain access to chlorins that bear two meso substituents, a geminal dimethyl group to lock in the chlorin hydrogenation level, and no flanking meso and beta substituents. The synthesis involves convergent joining of an Eastern half and a Western half. A 3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrodipyrrin (Western half) was synthesized in four steps from pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde. A bromodipyrromethane carbinol (Eastern half) was prepared by sequential acylation and bromination of a 5-substituted dipyrromethane followed by reduction. Chlorin formation is achieved by a two-flask process of acid-catalyzed condensation followed by metal-mediated oxidative cyclization. The latter reaction has heretofore been performed with copper templates. Investigation of conditions for this multistep process led to copper-free conditions (zinc acetate, AgIO(3), and piperidine in toluene at 80 degrees C for 2 h). The zinc chlorin was obtained in yields of approximately 10% and could be easily demetalated to give the corresponding free base chlorin. The synthetic process is compatible with a range of meso substituents (p-tolyl, mesityl, pentafluorophenyl, 4-[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]phenyl, 4-iodophenyl). Altogether four free base and four zinc chlorins have been prepared. The chlorins exhibit typical absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, and fluorescence quantum yields. The ease of synthetic access, presence of appropriate substituents, and characteristic spectral features make these types of chlorins well suited for incorporation in synthetic model systems.
