Abstract
The decolorization of azo dye Orange II using a UVA-Fe3+-PMS-oxalate system was studied. A series of experiments was performed to investigate the effects of several variables, including the pH, PMS dosage, Fe3+ concentration, oxalate concentration, and coexisting anions. The results revealed that a lower pH facilitated the decolorization, and relatively high decolorization efficiency (97.5%) could be achieved within 5 min at pH 3.0. The electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) and radical quenching experiments revealed that SO4•− played a crucial role in the decolorization of Orange II (85.8%), •OH was of secondary importance (9%), and 1O2 made a small contribution to the decolorization (5.2%). Furthermore, the formation of •OH in the experimental system strongly depended on HO2•/O2•−. These reactive oxidants were able to directly attack the azo bond of the luminescent group in Orange II and initiate the decolorization process. The efficient UVA-Fe3+-PMS-oxalate system showed great application potential in the treatment of wastewater contaminated by azo dyes.

Abstract
In this paper, a crosslinked carboxymethyl starch (CCMS) was prepared with corn starch as the raw material, epichlorohydrin as the crosslinking agent, and chloroacetic acid as the etherifying agent through a series of crosslinking, alkalization, and etherification reactions, respectively. Nano-TiO2 was loaded onto the surface of the CCMS by the sol-gel method to obtain a TiO2/CCMS composite. The TiO2/CCMS composite was characterized by XPS, XRD, SEM, and BET. XPS showed that the surface chemical composition of the TiO2/CCMS composite material contained titanium; XRD diffraction patterns indicated that the crystal form of the TiO2/CCMS composite was a combination of the CCMS and anatase TiO2. The surface morphology obtained by SEM showed that there were nano-TiO2 particles on the surface of the CCMS. The specific surface area of the TiO2/CCMS composite was larger than that of CCMS. The adsorption-photodegradation performance of the TiO2/CCMS composite was also studied under UV irradiation, and the results showed that significant adsorption-photodegradation synergies occurred.

Abstract
Fe(III) and carboxylic acids are ubiquitous in surface water and atmospheric water droplets. Numerous documents have reported the photochemistry of Fe(III)-carboxylate complexes, typically including Fe(III)-oxalate and Fe(III)-citrate. Our previous study preliminarily showed that oxalate enhances the photoreactivity of Fe(III)-citrate system. Here, we further investigate the synergistic effect of Fe(III)-citrate-oxalate binary system at different conditions with pharmaceutical amitriptyline (AMT) as the model pollutant. In the Fe(III)-oxalate system, the photodegradation of AMT decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 8.0. In the Fe(III)-citrate system, the optimal pH for AMT degradation is around 5.0 in the same pH range. For the Fe(III)-citrate-oxalate system, the photodegradation of AMT decreased with increasing pH, indicating the combined effect of both oxalate and citrate on the photoreactivity. The addition of oxalate to the Fe(III)-citrate system markedly accelerated the photodegradation of AMT. The Fe(III)-carboxylate binary system exhibited excellent photoreactivity and up to 90% AMT was removed after 30 min at pH 6.0 with Fe(III)/citrate/oxalate ratio of 10:150:500 (μM). Synergistic effect was observed in Fe(III)-citrate-oxalate binary system in the pH range of 5.0-8.0. The presence of oxalate promoted the depletion of citrate in the Fe(III)-citrate system. The higher concentration ratios of oxalate to citrate facilitated the synergistic effect in the Fe(III)-citrate-oxalate system. By LC-MS analyses, a possible pathway of AMT degradation was proposed based on hydroxyl radicals (OH) mechanism. This finding could be helpful for the better understanding of synergistic mechanism of Fe(III)-citrate-oxalate binary complexes, which will be of great potential application in environmental photocatalysis at near neutral pH.

Abstract
The photo-oxidation of organic pollutants as induced by ferric-carboxylate complexes was known to be a photo-Fenton-like process. The use of a carboxylate ligand with higher efficiency and lower toxicity at near neutral pH is of high interest to researchers. In this work, photo-oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA) induced by a ferric-oxalacetic acid complex in aqueous solutions was investigated under 395 nm LED lamps. The results showed that the rate of BPA degradation increased in the order pH 10.0 << 8.0 < 6.5 < 4.0 within the first 10 min. More than 90% of BPA was successfully oxidized with Fe(III)/oxalacetic acid with a ratio of 1:5 at pH 6.5, which was primarily attributed to the generated hydroxyl radical. Iron in the Fe(III)-oxalacetic acid system was reused by simple addition of oxalacetic acid to the reaction mixture. Compared to common carboxylate ligands (pyruvic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid), oxalacetic acid is more efficient and environmentally friendly for the Fe(III)-carboxylate complex-based photo-Fenton-like process at near neutral pH.

Abstract
Occurrence and fate of glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, and its main metabolite AMPA was investigated in Lake Greifensee, Switzerland. Monthly vertical concentration profiles in the lake showed an increase of glyphosate concentrations in the epilimnion from 15 ng/L in March to 145 ng/L in July, followed by a sharp decline to <5 ng/L in August. A similar pattern was observed for AMPA. Concentrations of glyphosate and AMPA in the two main tributaries generally were much higher than in the lake. Simulations using a numerical lake model indicated that a substantial amount of glyphosate and AMPA dissipated in the epilimnion, mainly in July and August, with half-lives of only ≈2-4 days which is ≫100 times faster than in the preceding months. Fast dissipation coincided with high water temperatures and phytoplankton densities, and low phosphate concentrations. This indicates that glyphosate might have been used as an alternative phosphorus source by bacterio- and phytoplankton. Metagenomic analysis of lake water revealed the presence of organisms known to be capable of degrading glyphosate and AMPA.

Abstract
Contamination of water and soils with arsenic, especially inorganic arsenic, has been one of the most important topics in the fields of environmental science and technology. The interactions between iron and arsenic play a very significant role in the environmental behavior and effect of arsenic species. However, the mechanism of As(III) oxidation in the presence of iron has remained unclear because of the complicated speciation of iron and arsenic. Photooxidation of As(III) on nascent colloidal ferric hydroxide (CFH) in aqueous solutions at pH 6 was studied to reveal the transformation mechanism of arsenic species. Experiments were done by irradiation using light-emitting diodes with a central wavelength of 394 nm. Results show that photooxidation of As(III) and photoreduction of Fe(III) occurred simultaneously under oxic or anoxic conditions. Photooxidation of As(III) in the presence of nascent CFH occurred through electron transfer from As(III) to Fe(III) induced by absorption of radiation into a ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) band. The estimated quantum yield of photooxidation of As(III) at 394 nm was (1.023 ± 0.065) × 10(-2). Sunlight-induced photooxidation of As(III) also occurred, implying that photolysis of the CFH-As(III) surface complex could be an important process in environments wherein nascent CFH exists.
