Water and Air Stable Copper(I) Complexes of Tetracationic Catenane Ligands for Oxidative C-C Cross-Coupling

Aqueous soluble and stable Cu(I) molecular catalysts featuring a catenane ligand composed of two dicationic, mutually repelling but mechanically interlocked macrocycles are reported. The ligand interlocking not only fine-tunes the coordination sphere and kinetically stabilizes the Cu(I) against air oxidation and disproportionation, but also buries the hydrophobic portions of the ligands and prevents their dissociation which are necessary for their good water solubility and a sustained activity. These catenane Cu(I) complexes can catalyze the oxidative C-C coupling of indoles and tetrahydroisoquinolines in water, using H2O2 as a green oxidant with a good substrate scope. The successful use of catenane ligands in exploiting aqueous Cu(I) catalysis thus highlights the many unexplored potential of mechanical bond as a design element for exploring transition metal catalysis under challenging conditions.

Exploiting Co(III)-Cyclopentadienyl Complexes To Develop Anticancer Agents

In recent years, organometallic complexes have attracted much attention as anticancer therapeutics aiming at overcoming the limitations of platinum drugs that are currently marketed. Still, the development of half-sandwich organometallic cobalt complexes remains scarcely explored. Four new cobalt(III)-cyclopentadienyl complexes containing N,N-heteroaromatic bidentate, and phosphane ligands were synthesized and fully characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques, and DFT methods. The cytotoxicity of all complexes was determined in vitro by the MTS assay in colorectal (HCT116), ovarian (A2780), and breast (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) human cancer cell lines and in a healthy human cell line (fibroblasts). The complexes showed high cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines, mostly due to ROS production, apoptosis, autophagy induction, and disruption of the mitochondrial membrane. Also, these complexes were shown to be nontoxic in vivo in an ex ovo chick embryo yolk sac membrane (YSM) assay.

Correlations between the Electronic Structure and Energetics of the Catalytic Steps in Homogeneous Water Oxidation Catalysis

The development of an efficient electrocatalyst for the water oxidation reaction is limited by unfavorable scaling relations between catalytic intermediates, resulting in an overpotential. In contrast to heterogeneous catalysts, the electronic structure of homogeneous catalysts can be modified to a great extent due to a tailored ligand design. However, studies utilizing the tunability of organic ligands have rarely been conducted in a systematic manner and, as of yet, have not produced catalytic paths that avoid the aforementioned unfavorable scaling relations. To investigate the influence of electron-donating groups (EDGs) or electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) on elementary steps in electrochemical water oxidation catalysis, cis-[Ru(bpy)2(H2O)]2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) was selected as the scaffold that was modified with methyl, methoxy, chloro, and trifluoromethyl groups. This catalyst can undergo several electron transfer (ET), proton transfer (PT), and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps that were all probed experimentally. In this systematic study, it was found that PCET steps are relatively insensitive with respect to the presence of EDGs or EWGs, while the decoupled ET and PT steps are more heavily affected. However, the influence of the substituents decreases with an increasing oxidation state of Ru due to a lack of d-electrons available at the Ru center for π-backbonding to the bipyridine ligand. Therefore, the RuV/VI redox couple appears to be relatively unaffected by the substituent. Nevertheless, the implementation of EWGs can shift all oxidation events to a very narrow potential window. Not only do our findings illustrate how electronic substituents affect the entire potential energy landscape of the catalytic water oxidation reaction, but they also show that the cis-[Ru(bpy)2(H2O)]2+ compounds follow different design rules and scaling relations, as has been reported for every other oxygen evolution catalyst thus far.

Light-Driven Water Oxidation with Ligand-Engineered Prussian Blue Analogues

The elucidation of the ideal coordination environment of a catalytic site has been at the heart of catalytic applications. Herein, we show that the water oxidation activities of catalytic cobalt sites in a Prussian blue (PB) structure could be tuned systematically by decorating its coordination sphere with a combination of cyanide and bidentate pyridyl groups.  K_0.1[Co(bpy)]_2.9[Fe(CN)₆]₂ ([Cobpy–Fe]), K_0.2[Co(phen)]_2.8[Fe(CN)₆]₂ ([Cophen–Fe]), {[Co(bpy)₂]₃[Fe(CN)₆]₂}[Fe(CN)₆]_1/3 ([Cobpy2–Fe]), and {[Co(phen)₂]₃[Fe(CN)₆]₂}[Fe(CN)₆]_1/3 Cl_0.11 ([Cophen2–Fe]) were prepared by introducing bidentate pyridyl groups (phen: 1,10-phenanthroline, bpy: 2,2′-bipyridine) to the common synthetic protocol of Co–Fe Prussian blue analogues. Characterization studies indicate that [Cobpy2–Fe] and [Cophen2–Fe] adopt a pentanuclear molecular structure, while [Cobpy–Fe] and [Cophen–Fe] could be described as cyanide-based coordination polymers with lower-dimensionality and less crystalline nature compared to the regular Co–Fe Prussian blue analogue (PBA), K_0.1Co_2.9[Fe(CN)₆]₂ ([Co–Fe]). Photocatalytic studies reveal that the activities of [Cobpy–Fe] and [Cophen–Fe] are significantly enhanced compared to those of [Co–Fe], while molecular [Cobpy2–Fe] and [Cophen2–Fe] are inactive toward water oxidation. [Cobpy–Fe] and [Cophen–Fe] exhibit upper-bound turnover frequencies (TOFs) of 1.3 and 0.7 s^–1, respectively, which are ∼50 times higher than that of [Co–Fe] (1.8 × 10^–2 s^–1). The complete inactivity of [Cobpy2–Fe] and [Cophen2–Fe] confirms the critical role of aqua coordination to the catalytic cobalt sites for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Computational studies show that bidentate pyridyl groups enhance the susceptibility of the rate-determining Co(IV)-oxo species to the nucleophilic water attack during the critical O–O bond formation. This study opens a new route toward increasing the intrinsic water oxidation activity of the catalytic sites in PB coordination polymers.

Bidentate pyridyl groups are coordinated to the catalytic cobalt sites in a cyanide-based Co−Fe structure to afford well-tuned extended network structures, which exhibit an outstanding photocatalytic performance compared to the regular Co−Fe PBA.

Theoretical determination of half-wave potentials for phenanthroline-, bipyridine-, acetylacetonate-, and glycinate-containing copper (II) complexes

We report a protocol for the evaluation of theoretical half-wave potential (E_1/2) using a set of 22 mixed chelate copper (II) complexes containing 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives as primary ligands, and acetylacetonate or glycinate as secondary ligands (formally from the Casiopeínas® family) for which accurate experimental values were determined in a 2/5 mixture of ethanol/water. We have calibrated the BP86, PBE, PBE0, B3LYP, M06-2X, and ω-B97XD functionals, using the Los Alamos LANL2DZ and Stuttgart-Köln SDDAll effective core potentials for the Cu and Fe atoms and the 6-311+G* basis set for the C, H, O, and N atoms. To address the solvent effects, we have saturated the first solvation shell with up to 9 water molecules for the explicit model and compared it with the Continuum Like-Polarizable Continuum Model (CPCM) implicit solvent scheme. We found that the PBE/LANL2DZ-6-311+G* protocol (with the CPCM implicit solvent scheme with an effective dielectric constant ε = 64.9121 for the 2/5 mixture of ethanol/water) yields the overall best performance. The theoretical values are compared with experimental data, three of which are reported here for the first time. We find good correlations between the theoretical and experimental E_1/2 values for the 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives (R² = 0.987, MAE = 86 mV) and 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives (R² = 0.802, MAE = 58.4 mV). The correlation trends have been explained in terms of the copper atom's ability to be reduced in the presence of the ligands. The Gibbs free energy differences at 298 K obtained for the redox reactions show that the more flexible secondary ligands (acetylacetonate) lead to larger entropic contributions which, as expected, increase the average MAE values as compared with the more rigid ligands (glycine). The present protocol yields lower MAEs as compared with previous approaches for similar mixed and flexible Cu(II) complexes.

PtII -Catalyzed Hydroxylation of Terminal Aliphatic C(sp3 )-H Bonds with Molecular Oxygen

The practical application of Shilov-type Pt catalysis to the selective hydroxylation of terminal aliphatic C-H bonds remains a formidable challenge, due to difficulties in replacing Pt^IV with a more economically viable oxidant, particularly O₂ . We report the potential of employing FeCl₂ as a suitable redox mediator to overcome the kinetic hurdles related to the direct use of O₂ in the Pt reoxidation. For the selective conversion of butyric acid to γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), a significantly enhanced catalyst activity and stability (turnover numbers (TON)>30) were achieved under 20 bar O₂ in comparison to current state-of-the-art systems (TON<10). In this regard, essential reaction parameters affecting the overall activity were identified, along with specific additives to attain catalyst stability at longer reaction times. Notably, deactivation by reduction to Pt⁰ was prevented by the addition of monodentate pyridine derivatives, such as 2-fluoropyridine, but also by introducing varying partial pressures of N₂ in the gaseous atmosphere. Finally, stability tests revealed the involvement of Pt^II and FeCl₂ in catalyzing the non-selective overoxidation of GHB. Accordingly, in situ esterification with boric acid proved to be a suitable strategy to maintain enhanced selectivities at much higher conversions (TON>60). Altogether, a useful catalytic system for the selective hydroxylation of primary aliphatic C-H bonds with O₂ is presented.

On the preferences of five-membered chelate rings in coordination chemistry: insights from the Cambridge Structural Database and theoretical calculations

The purpose of this review is to give an overview of three important N-bidentate ligands: 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), and ethylenediamine (en). We have not attempted to be comprehensive because of the huge amount of activity being done in coordination chemistry using these ligands. Instead we present a full structural and geometrical study by using the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) combined with theoretical calculations that allow us to parameterize their coordinating properties and ability to coordinate to transition and non-transition metals. More importantly, we illustrate that upon coordination and formation of the five-membered chelate ring, these ligands are able to adapt themselves to the requirements of the different metals by changing the MN distances and NMN angles. Therefore, a redefinition of the preferences of these ligands to metals with large ionic radii is needed. Finally, we will present some facts about the participation of these ligands in inorganic-organic hybrids (IOHs) based on Keggin polyoxometalates (POMs).

Impact of Ligand Substitutions on Multielectron Redox Properties of Fe Complexes Supported by Nitrogenous Chelates

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have recently been recognized as a potentially viable technology for scalable energy storage. To take full advantage of RFBs, one possible approach for achieving high energy densities is to maximize a number of redox events by utilizing charge carriers capable of multiple one-electron transfers within the electrochemical window of solvent. However, past efforts to develop more efficient electrolytes for nonaqueous RFBs have mostly been empirical. In this manuscript, we shed light on design principles by theoretically investigating the effects of systematically substituting pyridyl moieties with imine ligands within a series of Fe complexes with some experimental validation. We found that such replacement is an effective strategy for reducing the molecular weight-to-charge ratios of these complexes. Simultaneously, calculations suggest that the reduction potentials and ligand-based redox activity of such substituted N-heterocyclic Fe compounds might be maintained within their +4 → -1 charge states. Additionally, by theoretically examining the role of coordination geometry, vis-à-vis reducing the number of redox noninnocent ligands within the first coordination sphere, we have demonstrated that Fe complexes with one such ligand were also capable of supporting multielectron reduction events and exhibited reduction potentials similar to their parent analogs supported by two or three of the same multidentate ligands. However, some differences in redox nature within the lower (+2 → -1) charge states were also noticed. Specifically, complexes containing two bidentate ligands, or one tridentate ligand, exhibited ligand-based reductions, whereas compounds with one bidentate ligand exhibited metal-centered reductions. The current results pave the way toward the design of the next-generation of Fe complexes with lower molecular weights and greater stored energy for redox flow batteries.

Phenanthroline-A Versatile Ligand for Advanced Functional Polymeric Materials

The controlled incorporation of phenanthroline moieties into polymers is introduced, demonstrating their application as metal-ion complexing ligands for the construction of advanced macromolecular structures. Specifically, two phenanthroline-containing monomers based on acrylate and styrene functionalities, were synthesized. Each monomer was readily copolymerized with either N,N-dimethylacrylamide or styrene via nitroxide-mediated polymerization, resulting in narrowly distributed polar or non-polar copolymers. To demonstrate the versatility of the established polymer systems, the polar polymer was employed for transition metal induced single-chain nanoparticle formation, verified by diffusion-ordered NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, the non-polar polymer allows facile incorporation of lanthanide ions, creating luminescent metallo-polymers, in-depth characterized by advanced photophysical experiments and 2D NMR measurements.

Thermal and light induced spin crossover behavior of a dinuclear Fe(ii) compound

A dinuclear Fe(ii) compound has been prepared through the reaction of 2,5-dichloride-4-phenylimino-1,2,4-triazole (L) with Fe(BF₄)₂·6H₂O, with the formula [Fe₂(L)₅(SCN)₄](H₂O) (1).
