Abstract
After the discovery of cisplatin, many metal compounds were investigated for the therapy of diseases, especially cancer. The high therapeutic potential of metal-based compounds is related to the special properties of these compounds, such as their redox activity and ability to target vital biological sites. The overproduction of ROS and the consequent destruction of the membrane potential of mitochondria and/or the DNA helix is one of the known pathways leading to the induction of apoptosis by metal complexes. The apoptosis process can occur via the death receptor pathway and/or the mitochondrial pathway. The expression of Bcl2 proteins and the caspase family play critical roles in these pathways. In addition to apoptosis, autophagy is another process that regulates the suppression or promotion of various cancers through a dual action. On the other hand, the ability to interact with DNA is an important property found in several metal complexes with potent antiproliferative effects against cancer cells. These interactions were classified into two important categories: covalent/coordinated or subtle, and non-coordinated interactions. The anticancer activity of metal complexes is sometimes achieved by the simultaneous combination of several mechanisms. In this review, the anticancer effect of metal complexes is mechanistically discussed by different pathways, and some effective agents on their antiproliferative properties are explained.

Abstract
Newer imidazolium ionic liquid (IL) halides 4a-f appending variety of fluorinated phenylacetamide side chains were designed and synthesized through quaternization of 1-methyl and/or 1,2-dimethylimidazole with appropriate 2-chloro-N-(fluorinatedphenyl)acetamides. The resulting ILs were converted to their respective ionic liquid analogues carrying fluorinated counteranions (PF6 -, BF4 -, and/or CF3COO-) 5a-r. All newly synthesized ILs were fully characterized using several spectroscopic experiments such as 1H, 13C, 11B, 19F, 31P NMR, and mass analysis. The synthesized ionic liquids were investigated for their DNA binding and anticancer activities. The obtained DNA binding constants ranged from 1.444 × 105 to 3.518 × 105, indicating a reasonably good binding affinity. The percentage of anticancer activities ranged from 48 to 59 with H-1229 cell line, showing quite good anticancer potential. The modeling studies indicated the interactions of the reported molecules with DNA via hydrogen bonds. These were in agreement with those of DNA binding and anticancer results. Briefly, the designed ionic liquids may be used as good anticancer candidates for treating human cancer.

Abstract
Two transition metal complexes with 2-((2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)quinolin-8-ol (L), [Cu(L)Cl₂]₂ (1) and [Ni(L)Cl₂]·CH₂Cl₂ (2), were synthesized and fully characterized. Complex 1 exhibited high in vitro antitumor activity against SK-OV-3, MGC80-3 and HeLa cells with IC50 values of 3.69 ± 0.16, 2.60 ± 0.17, and 3.62 ± 0.12 μM, respectively. In addition, complex 1 caused cell arrest in the S phase, which led to the down-regulation of Cdc25 A, Cyclin B, Cyclin A, and CDK2, and the up-regulation of p27, p21, and p53 proteins in MGC80-3 cells. Complex 1 induced MGC80-3 cell apoptosis via a mitochondrial dysfunction pathway, as shown by the significantly decreased level of bcl-2 protein and the loss of Δψ, as well as increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), intracellular Ca2+, cytochrome C, apaf-1, caspase-3, and caspase-9 proteins in MGC80-3 cells.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn)-based complexes have been drawing attention due to the fact that they are more effective than other metal complexes. However, the use of Mn(II)-based complexes in medicine remains limited because of certain side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of a novel Mn(II) complex [Mn2(μ-(C6H5)2CHCOO)2(bipy)4](bipy)(ClO4)2 and Mn(II) complex loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) on MCF-7 and HUVEC control cells. The average diameter of Mn(II) complex was about 1120 ± 2.43 nm, while the average particle size of Mn(II) complex-SLNs was ∼340 ± 2.27 nm. The cytotoxic effects of Mn(II) complex and Mn(II)-SLNs were 86.8 and 66.4%, respectively (p < .05). Additionally, both Mn(II) complex (39.25%) and Mn(II)-SLNs (38.05%) induced apoptosis and increased the arrest of G0/G1 phase. However, Mn(II) complex exerted toxic effects on the HUVEC control cell (63.4%), whereas no toxic effects was observed when treated with Mn(II)-SLNs at 150 μM. As a consequence, SLNs might be potentially used for metal-based complexes in the treatment of cancer due to reducing size and toxic effects of metal-based complexes.
