Abstract
Arabinoxylans (AXs) are compounds with high nutritional value and applicability, including prebiotics or supplementary ingredients, in food manufacturing industries. Unfortunately, the recovery of AXs may require advanced separation and integrated strategies. Here, an analysis of the emerging techniques to extract AXs from cereals and their by-products is discussed. This review covers distinct methods implemented over the last 2-3 years, identifying that the type of method, extraction source, AX physicochemical properties and pre-treatment conditions are the main factors influencing the recovery yield. Alkaline extraction is among the most used methods nowadays, mostly due to its simplicity and high recovery yield. Concurrently, recovered AXs applied in food applications is timely reviewed, such as potential bread ingredient, prebiotic and as a wall material for probiotic encapsulation, in beer and non-alcoholic beverage manufacturing, complementary ingredient in bakery products and cookies, improvers in Chinese noodles, 3D food printing and designing of nanostructures for delivery platforms.

Abstract
Currently, ginger is one the most consumed plants when dealing with the treatments of various illnesses. So far, it is known that various biologically active molecules, such as gingerols, shogaols and zingerone, among others, are the main responsible for specific biological activities, opening a new window for its utilization as a nutraceutical in foods. In pioneering extraction processes, solvent extraction has been initially used for these applications; however, the drawbacks of this typical extraction method compared with other emergent separation techniques make it possible for the exploration of new extraction pathways, including microwave, ultrasound, supercritical, subcritical and pressurized-assisted extraction, along with three phase partitioning, high-speed counter current chromatography and magnetic solid phase extraction. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report documenting the recent studies and cases of study in this field. Therefore, we comprehensively review the progress and the latest findings (over the last five years) on research developments, including patents and emerging extraction methods, aiming at the purification of biologically active molecules (gingerols, shogaols and zingerone) contained in ginger. Over the course of this review, particular emphasis is devoted to breakthrough strategies and meaningful outcomes in ginger components extraction. Finally, dosage and safety concerns related to ginger extracts are also documented.

Abstract
Food processing is among the greatest water-consuming industries with a significant role in the implementation of sustainable development goals. Water-consuming industries such as food processing have become a threat to limited freshwater resources, and numerous attempts are being carried out in order to develop and apply novel approaches for water management in these industries. Studies have shown the positive impact of the new methods of process integration (e.g., water pinch, mathematical optimization, etc.) in maximizing water reuse and recycle. Applying these methods in food processing industries not only significantly supported water consumption minimization but also contributed to environmental protection by reducing wastewater generation. The methods can also increase the productivity of these industries and direct them to sustainable production. This interconnection led to a new subcategory in nexus studies known as water-food-environment nexus. The nexus assures sustainable food production with minimum freshwater consumption and minimizes the environmental destructions caused by untreated wastewater discharge. The aim of this study was to provide a thorough review of water-food-environment nexus application in food processing industries and explore the nexus from different aspects. The current study explored the process of food industries in different sectors regarding water consumption and wastewater generation, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The most recent wastewater treatment methods carried out in different food processing sectors were also reviewed. This review provided a comprehensive literature for choosing the optimum scenario of water and wastewater management in food processing industries.

Abstract
Continuous economic loss and even human death caused by various microbial pathogens in drinking water call for the development of water disinfection systems with the features of environmentally friendly nature, high inactivation efficacy without pathogen regrowth, facile disinfection operation and low energy consumption. Alternatively, g-C3N4-based visible-light-enabled photocatalytic disinfection can meet the above requirements and thus has attracted increasing interest in recent years. Here, we explored for the first time the antimicrobial ability and mechanisms of a wide spectrum of representative pathogens ranging from bacteria (Escherichia coli), to viruses (human adenoviruses) and spores (Bacillus subtilis spores) by g-C3N4/Vis system with the assistance of two common oxidants (H2O2 and PMS), especially in a comparative perspective. Pristine g-C3N4 could achieve a complete inactivation of bacteria (5-log) within 150 min, but displayed negligible antimicrobial activity against human viruses and spores (< 0.5-log). Fortunately, simple addition of oxidants into the system could greatly enhance the inactivation of bacteria (5-log with PMS within 120 min) and human viruses (2.6-log with H2O2 within 150 min). Roles of reactive oxygen species were found to be quite different in the disinfection processes, depending on both types of chemical oxidants and microbial pathogens. Additionally, disinfection efficiency could be facilely and effectively improved by statistical optimization of two important operating factors (i.e., catalyst loading and oxidant addition). Selection of added oxidants was determined by not only the target pathogen but also the water matrix. As a proof of concept, this work can provide some meaningful and useful information for advancing the field of green and sustainable water disinfection.

Abstract
The production of worldwide nixtamalized products has increased in Latin American countries over the last years. For a better maize handling and exploitation of its nutritional elements, maize is subjected to a nixtamalization pretreatment protocol, which produces meaningful chemical, nutritional and quality changes in maize and its derived products, but large amounts of its primary by-product, well-known as 'nejayote', are also produced. Importantly, nejayote is usually discarded into the urbanized sewage with minimal treatment. Today, according to the recent research reports, new emerging techniques and protocols have been implemented to improve the nixtamalization products and by-products processing. New valorization approaches and biotechnological developments (including biotransformations) toward the reuse of nejayote have been developed according to its considerable content of biomolecules. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the main development works at assisting nixtamalization products and by-products processing. Herein, particular attention is paid to experimental insights dealing with the valorization of nejayote.

Abstract
Today, there is an increasing interest in improving the physicochemical properties of polymeric membranes by merging the membranes with different inorganic materials. These so-called composite membranes have been implemented in different membrane-based technologies (e.g., microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, membrane bioreactors, among others) for water treatment and disinfection. This is because such inorganic materials (such as TiO2-, ZnO-, Ag-, and Cu-based nanoparticles, carbon-based materials, to mention just a few) can improve the separation performance of membranes and also some other properties, such as antifouling, mechanical, thermal, and physical and chemical stability. Moreover, such materials display specific biological activity towards viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, showing enhanced water disinfection properties. Therefore, the aim of this review is to collect the latest advances (in the last five years) in using composite membranes and new hybrid materials for water disinfection, paying particular emphasis on relevant results and new hydride composites together with their preparation protocols. Moreover, this review addresses the main mechanism of action of different conventional and novel inorganic materials toward biologically active matter.
