Applied of central composite design for the optimization of removal yield of the ketoprofen (KTP) using electrocoagulation process

Decolorization enhancement of basic fuchsin by UV/H2O2 process: optimization and modeling using Box Behnken design

The present work deals with the optimization of basic fuchsin dye removal from an aqueous solution using the ultraviolet UV/H2O2 process. Response Surface Modeling (RSM) based on Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was applied as a tool for the optimization of operating conditions such as initial dye concentration (10-50 ppm), hydrogen peroxide dosage (H2O2) (10-20 mM/L) and irradiation time (60-180 min), at pH = 7.4 under ultra-violet irradiation (254 nm and 25 W intensity). Chemical oxygen demand (COD abatement) was used as a response variable. The Box-Behnken Design can be employed to develop a mathematical model for predicting UV/H2O2 performance for COD abatement. COD abatement is sensitive to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and irradiation time. Statistical analyses indicate a high correlation between observed and predicted values (R2 > 0.98). In the BBD predictions, the optimal conditions in the UV/H2O2 process for removing 99.3% of COD were found to be low levels of pollutant concentration (10 ppm), a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide dosage (20 mM/L), and an irradiation time of 80 min.

Removal of chemical oxygen demand and ammonia nitrogen from high salinity tungsten smelting wastewater by one-step electrochemical oxidation: From bench-scale test, pilot-scale test, to industrial test

In recent years, electrochemical oxidation (EO) shows the characteristics of green and high efficiency in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N) from wastewater, which has been favored by researchers. However, at present, most of current studies on EO remain in laboratory stage, reports about pilot-scale or even industrial tests with large treatment capacity are few, which slowing down the use of the advanced technology to practical application. In this study, bench-scale tests, pilot-scale tests (treatment capacity 200-500 L/h), and industrial tests (treatment capacity 100 m³/h) were carried out by EO technology in view of the characteristics of tungsten smelting wastewater (TSW) with high salinity (NaCl), COD, and NH₃-N. Results showed that the removal of COD and NH₃-N was a competitive reaction in the EO process, and COD could be removed more preferentially than NH₃-N. When NH₃-N content was low, the influent pH had a minimal effect on its removal, and when NH₃-N content was high, increasing the influent pH was beneficial to its removal. Industrial tests showed that the one-step removal of COD and NH₃-N in TSW met the standard, and the power consumption per cubic meter of wastewater was only 4.2 kW h, and the treatment cost was much lower than the two-step process of "breaking point chlorination to remove NH₃-N and adding oxidant to remove COD". This study has successfully realized industrial application of EO technology in TSW treatment for the first time and provided a successful case, which is helpful to accelerate the popularization and application of this technology in the field of high salinity organic ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment.

Comprehensive understanding of electrochemical treatment systems combined with biological processes for wastewater remediation

The presence of toxic pollutants in wastewater discharge can affect the environment negatively due to presence of the organic and inorganic contaminants. The application of the electrochemical process in wastewater treatment is promising, specifically in treating these harmful pollutants from the aquatic environment. This review focused on recent applications of the electrochemical process for the remediation of such harmful pollutants from aquatic environments. Furthermore, the process conditions that affect the electrochemical process performance are evaluated, and the appropriate treatment processes are suggested according to the presence of organic and inorganic contaminants. Electrocoagulation, electrooxidation, and electro-Fenton applications in wastewater have shown effective performance with high removal rates. The disadvantages of these processes are the formation of toxic intermediate metabolites, high energy consumption, and sludge generation. To overcome such disadvantages combined ecotechnologies can be applied in large-scale wastewater pollutants removal. The combination of electrochemical and biological treatment has gained importance, increased removal performance remarkably, and decreased operational costs. The critical discussion with depth information in this review could be beneficial for wastewater treatment plant operators throughout the world.

Removal of nutrients and other emerging inorganic contaminants from water and wastewater by electrocoagulation process

The continual discharge of emerging inorganic pollutants into natural aquatic systems and their negative effects on the environment have motivated the researchers to explore and develop clean and efficient water treatment strategies. Electrocoagulation (EC) is a rapid and promising pollutant removal approach that does not require any chemical additives or complicated process management. Therefore, inorganic pollutant treatment via the EC process is considered one of the most feasible processes. The potential developments of EC process may make the process a wise choice for water treatment in the future. Thus, the present study mainly focuses on the use of EC technology to remove nutrients and other emerging inorganic pollutants from water medium. The operating factors that influence EC process efficiency are explained. The major advancement of the EC technique as well as field-implemented units are also discussed. Overall, this study mainly focuses on emerging issues, present advancements, and techno-economic considerations in EC process.

Activated persulfate by iron-carbon micro electrolysis used for refractory organics degradation in wastewater: a review

With the rapid economic development, the discharge of industrial wastewater and municipal wastewater containing many refractory organic pollutants is increasing, so there is an urgent need for processes that can treat refractory organics in wastewater. Iron-carbon micro electrolysis and advanced oxidation based on persulfate radicals (SO₄^-·) have received much attention in the field of organic wastewater treatment. Iron-carbon micro electrolysis activated persulfate (Fe-C/PS) treatment of wastewater is characterized by high oxidation efficiency and no secondary pollution. This paper reviews the mechanism and process of Fe-C/PS, degradation of organics in different wastewater, and the influencing factors. In addition, the degradation efficiency and optimal reaction conditions (oxidant concentration, catalyst concentration, iron-carbon material, and pH) of Fe-C/PS in the treatment of refractory organics in wastewater are summarized. Moreover, the important factors affecting the degradation of organics by Fe-C/PS are presented. Finally, we analyzed the challenges and the prospects for the future of Fe-C/PS in application, and concluded that the main future directions are to improve the degradation efficiency and cost by synthesizing stable and efficient catalysts, optimizing process parameters, and expanding the application scope.

A review on electrocoagulation process for the removal of emerging contaminants: theory, fundamentals, and applications

Electrocoagulation (EC) is an excellent and promising technology in wastewater treatment, as it combines the benefits of coagulation, flotation, and electrochemistry. During the last decade, extensive researches have focused on removal of emerging contaminants by using electrocoagualtion, due to its several advantages like compactness, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, low sludge production, and eco-friendness. Emerging contaminants (ECs) are micropollutants found in trace amounts that discharging into conventional wastewater treatment (WWT) plants entering surface waters and imposing a high threat to human and aquatic life. Various studies reveal that about 90% of emerging contaminants are disposed unscientifically into water bodies, creating problems to public health and environment. The studies on removal of emerging contaminants from wastewater are by global researchers are critically reviewed. The core findings proved that still more research required into optimization of parameters, system design, and economic feasibility to explore the potential of EC combined systems. This review has introduced an innovative collection of current knowledge on electro-coagulation for the removal of emerging contaminants.
