Structural and textural influences of surfactant-modified zeolitic materials over the methamidophos adsorption behavior

Low-cost materials as vehicles for pesticides in aquatic media: a review of the current status of different biosorbents employed, optimization by RSM approach

Water contamination by pesticides is increasing dramatically due to population growth and the extensive use of pesticides in agriculture, leading to grave environmental and health concerns. Thus, efficient processes and the design and development of effective treatment technologies are required due to the enormous demand for fresh water. The adsorption approach has been widely used to remove organic contaminants such as pesticides because of its performance, less expense, high selectivity, and simplicity of operation compared to other treatment technologies. Among alternative adsorbents, biomaterials abundantly available for pesticide sorption from water resources have attracted the attention of researchers worldwide. The main objective of this review article is to (i) present studies on a wide range of raw or chemically modified biomaterials potentially effective in removing pesticides from aqueous media; (ii) indicating the effectiveness of biosorbents as green and low-cost materials for removing pesticides from wastewater; and (iii) furthermore, report the application of response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling and optimizing adsorption.

Fixed-Bed Modification of Zeolitic Tuffs and Their Application for Cr(VI) Removal

Natural clinoptilolite tuff (CL) and chabazite-clinoptilolite tuff (CH) were modified in fixed-bed column by immobilization of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br), then investigated as a sorbent for inorganic anions of Cr(VI). The proposed modification technique combined with surfactant solution batching allows minimizing the surfactant loses through foaming and crystallization and creation of stable organic coverage. The HDTMA loading depended on the mineral composition of the zeolitic tuff, the topology of its external surface, and process conditions. The maximum surface coverage was obtained by gradually dosing surfactant solution in the smallest volume of batches and corresponded up to 100% and 182% of external cation exchange capacity (ECEC) for mono and double layer coverage, respectively. In case of mono layer coverage, modification proceeds until the exhaustion of surfactant in supply solution, while in the double layer one, until equilibrium of HDTMA concentration in both zeolitic and liquid phases was established. The efficiency of Cr(VI) uptake by prepared surface modified zeolites (SMZs) increased with increasing of HDTMA loading. In the case of mono layer SMZs, the capacities of CH-HDTMA and CL-HDTMA were 10.3 and 5.4 mg/g, respectively, while in the case of double layer SMZs, the amount of Cr uptake on CH-HDTMA and CL-HDTMA were 16.8 and 15 mg/g, respectively. Ion exchange is the predominant mechanism of Cr(VI) sorption but it takes place only if modification resulted in at least partial double layer coverage. The XPS analysis reveals Cr(VI) reduction to a less-toxic Cr(III) by the electron donating N-containing groups and by reaction with Fe⁺² ions on the zeolite external surface.

Degradation of Acephate and Its Intermediate Methamidophos: Mechanisms and Biochemical Pathways

Acephate is an organophosphate pesticide that has been widely used to control insect pests in agricultural fields for decades. However, its use has been partially restricted in many countries due to its toxic intermediate product methamidophos. Long term exposure to acephate and methamidophos in non-target organisms results in severe poisonous effects, which has raised public concern and demand for the removal of these pollutants from the environment. In this paper, the toxicological effects of acephate and/or methamidophos on aquatic and land animals, including humans are reviewed, as these effects promote the necessity of removing acephate from the environment. Physicochemical degradation mechanisms of acephate and/or methamidophos are explored and explained, such as photo-Fenton, ultraviolet/titanium dioxide (UV/TiO₂) photocatalysis, and ultrasonic ozonation. Compared with physicochemical methods, the microbial degradation of acephate and methamidophos is emerging as an eco-friendly method that can be used for large-scale treatment. In recent years, microorganisms capable of degrading methamidophos or acephate have been isolated, including Hyphomicrobium sp., Penicillium oxalicum, Luteibacter jiangsuensis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis. Enzymes related to acephate and/or methamidophos biodegradation include phosphotriesterase, paraoxonase 1, and carboxylesterase. Furthermore, several genes encoding organophosphorus degrading enzymes have been identified, such as opd, mpd, and ophc2. However, few reviews have focused on the biochemical pathways and molecular mechanisms of acephate and methamidophos. In this review, the mechanisms and degradation pathways of acephate and methamidophos are summarized in order to provide a new way of thinking for the study of the degradation of acephate and methamidophos.
