Breakthrough curve analysis of phosphorylated hazelnut shell waste in column operation for continuous harvesting of lithium from water

In batch-scale operations, biosorption employing phosphorylated hazelnut shell waste (FHS) revealed excellent lithium removal and recovery efficiency. Scaling up and implementing packed bed column systems necessitates further design and performance optimization. Lithium biosorption via FHS was investigated utilizing a continuous-flow packed-bed column operated under various flow rates and bed heights to remove Li to ultra-low levels and recover it. The Li biosorption capacity of the FHS column was unaffected by the bed height, however, when the flow rate was increased, the capacity of the FHS column decreased. The breakthrough time, exhaustion time, and uptake capacity of the column bed increased with increasing column bed height, whereas they decreased with increasing influent flow rate. At flow rates of 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mL/min, bed volumes (BVs, mL solution/mL biosorbent) at the breakthrough point were found to be 477, 369, and 347, respectively, with the required BVs for total saturation point of 941, 911, and 829, while the total capacity was calculated as 22.29, 20.07, and 17.69 mg Li/g sorbent. In the 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 cm height columns filled with FHS, the breakthrough times were 282, 366, and 433 min, respectively, whereas the periods required for saturation were 781, 897, and 1033 min. The three conventional breakthrough models of the Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and Modified Dose-Response (MDR) were used to properly estimate the whole breakthrough behavior of the FHS column and the characteristic model parameters. Li's extremely favorable separation utilizing FHS was evidenced by the steep S-shape of the breakthrough curves for both parameters flow rate and bed height. The reusability of FHS was demonstrated by operating the packed bed column in multi-cycle mode, with no appreciable loss in column performance.

Insights into interactions of biodegradable and non-biodegradable microplastics with heavy metals

Biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) are considered to be environmentally friendly compared to non-biodegradable plastics (NMPs). However, BMPs are likely to become toxic during their transport because of the adsorption of pollutants (e.g., heavy metals) onto them. This study investigated the uptake of six heavy metals (Cd2+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Ni2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+) by a common BMPs (polylactic acid (PLA)) and compared their adsorption characteristics to those of three types of NMPs (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) for the first time. The order of heavy metal adsorption capacity among the four MPs was PE > PLA > PVC > PP. The findings suggest that BMPs contained more toxic heavy metals than some NMPs. Among the six heavy metals, Cr3+ showed considerably stronger adsorption than other heavy metals in both BMPS and NMPs. The adsorption of heavy metals on MPs can be well explained using the Langmuir isotherm model, while the adsorption kinetic curves showed the best fit to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Desorption experiments revealed that BMPs released a higher percentage of heavy metals (54.6-62.6%) in the acidic environment in a shorter time (~ 6 h) compared to NMPs. Overall, this study provides insights into interactions of BMPs and NMPs with heavy metals and their removal mechanisms in aquatic environment.

Optimizing leachate treatment with titanium oxide-impregnated activated carbon (TiO2@ASC) in a fixed-bed column: characterization, modeling, and prediction study

This research focused on the application of a fixed bed column filled with immobilized titanium oxide-loaded almond shell carbon (TiO2@ASC) for the treatment of leachate. The adsorption performance of synthesized TiO2@ASC in fixed bed column is analyzed using adsorption experiments and modeling study. The characteristics of synthesized materials are determined by several instrumental techniques like BET, XRD, FTIR, and FESEM-EDX. The flow rate, initial concentration of COD and NH3-N, and bed height were optimized to determine the effectiveness of leachate treatment. The linear bed depth service time (BDST) plots equations with a correlation coefficient of greater than 0.98 confirmed the model's accuracy for COD and NH3-N adsorption in column structure. The adsorption process was found to be well predicted by an artificial neural network (ANN) model with a root mean square error of 0.0172 and 0.0167 for COD and NH3-N reduction, respectively. The immobilized adsorbent was regenerated using HCl and was found to be reusable for up to three cycles, promoting material sustainability. This study is aimed to contribute towards SDG 6 and SDG11 by United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Fabrication of 1-octane sulphonic acid modified nanoporous graphene with tuned hydrophilicity for decontamination of industrial wastewater from organic and inorganic contaminants

This research work is based on the fabrication of a graphene oxide-based composite (GOBC) to remove the maximum number of contaminants from different industrial effluents. The GO was first intercalated with 1-octanesulphonic acid sodium salt and subjected to microwave irradiation to produce GOBC. Fixed-bed column tests and Jar-tests were performed for removal of the most harmful endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as bisphenol A, bisphenol S, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, dyes (methylene blue and violate) and toxic metal ions such as Pb²⁺, Li⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Cr⁶⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, and As⁵⁺via adsorption. The prepared material was thoroughly characterized for its unique functional and structural properties. The results obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, water contact angle and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the successful preparation of GOBC using the proposed intercalation/microwave method. The water contact angle results showed decreased hydrophilicity of GOBC as compared to GO as the contact angle of GOBC (77.75°) was higher than that of GO (53.98°). The effects of main column parameters such as bed height, initial analyte concentration and solution flow rate were investigated. The results revealed that shorter breakthrough time, and high adsorption capacity were obtained at high flow rates of 1 mL min^-1, while longer breakthrough time and lower adsorption capacity were obtained at lower flow rates of 0.5 mL min^-1. The effect of bed depth on the breakthrough curve of analyte adsorption was a steep breakthrough curve; or a shorter breakthrough time occurring at lower bed height. The adsorption data obeyed the Yoon-Nelson and Thomas models very well. The adsorption capacity for BPA, BPS, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, methylene blue and violate was found to be 307, 305, 260, 290, 230 and 195 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity of GOBC for toxic metal ions such as Pb²⁺, Li⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Cr⁶⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, and As⁵⁺ was found to be 156, 136, 126, 124, 118, 114, 82, 82, 72 and 72 mg g^-1, respectively with excellent kinetics. The adsorption data obtained using Jar-tests revealed that GOBC obeys a Langmuir isotherm and a pseudo second order kinetics model. The analysis of industrial wastewater samples showed good removal efficiency of GOBC.

Active carbon-based waste packaging materials for uranium sorption from aqueous solution

Waste (packaging plastic and industrial water) accumulation is one of the great global challenges over the world. Combining waste recycling science and water treatment knowledge are fascinating as applied sciences add value to the safe disposal of waste plastic packaging materials and wastewater. Active carbons (ACs) are prepared from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at two pyrolysis temperatures (i.e. 450 and 500 °C) and compressed in well-defined designed molds to form cylinder shapes as applied in industry. Particle size (817 and 1074 nm), zeta potential (- 7.17 and - 25.6 mV), surface area (544 and 632 m2/g), and topography of prepared ACs were investigated and discussed. Zeta potential exhibited nice dispersion in accordance to charge value and surficial SEM images prove space hole filling with adsorbed materials after treatment. The prepared activated carbon sorbents have been applied for the removal of radioactive elements from wastewater. The displayed data declare that both sorbents have the same sorption performance, whereas the uranium sorption process using both sorbents is obeyed to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the prepared AC at a pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C exhibits higher sorption capacity (38.9 mg g^-1) than that prepared at lower temperature, i.e., 450 °C (36.2 mg g^-1) which indicates that the increase in pyrolysis temperature improves the sorption characteristics of the yield-activated carbon.

Carbonate treated coffee powder (CTCP) for selective sorption of Pu4+ over Am3+, Np4+, NpO22+, and PuO22+ from aqueous acidic solution: Investigation on mechanism, kinetics, thermodynamics, stripping and radiolytic stability

An attempt was made for understanding the sorption behaviour of different actinide ions Pu⁴⁺, PuO₂²⁺, Am³⁺, Np⁴⁺, and NpO₂²⁺ on carbonate treated exhausted coffee powder (CTCP). Very efficient sorption of Pu⁴⁺ over other actinide ions from aqueous acidic medium was observed. Almost 4 h were required for achieving equilibrium. Experimental results for Pu⁺⁴ were fitted into different sorption isotherm model: Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm, D.R, isotherm and Temkin isotherm. Based on the linear regression, it was found that, Freundlich isotherm was predominantly operative. Pseudo 2nd order kinetics was found to be effective for the sorption of Pu⁺⁴. More than 80 % of loaded Pu⁴⁺ was found to desorb by 0.25 M oxalic acid solution. CTCP exhibited relatively good radiation stability. Sorption of Pu⁺⁴ on CTCP was exothermic, and spontaneous in nature. The sorption process was simple, cost effective and environmentally benign, as it did not involve any sophisticated, multi-step, sorbent synthesis.

Post-irradiation physicochemical features of polymer composite for the removal of Co(II) and Nd(III) from aqueous solutions

The scientific impact of this work is the protection of the environment from hazardous pollutants. Gamma irradiation was employed for the preparation of a new composite polymer by irradiating a mixture containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and tannic acid (TA) to produce PVP-HEMA-TA. The sorption efficiency and capacity of PVP-HEMA-TA were evaluated by studying some factors affecting the sorption of Nd(III) and Co(II) from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated that the maximum uptake was 92.4 and 75.3% for Nd(III) and Co(II), respectively. From the kinetic studies, the pseudo-second-order equation could better fit the data than the pseudo-first-order for the sorption of both ions. The sorption isotherm investigations illustrated that the Langmuir equation fits the gained data better than Freundlich equation. The Langmuir capacity was 64.5 and 60.8 mg/g for neodymium and cobalt ions, respectively. The applicability of Langmuir equation is strong evidence that the process is limited by a chemisorption mechanism. Findings of the work highlight the potential utilization of PVP-HEMA-TA as an effective and recyclable material for the elimination of Nd(III) and Co(II) from the aqueous phase.

Ni-alginate hydrogel beads for establishing breakthrough curves of lead ions removal from aqueous solutions

The scientific impact of this work is the protection of the environment from hazardous pollutants using a column technique. Besides its higher stability at working pH and its time persisting, Ni-alginate has a higher ability to remove lead ions compared to the other prepared beads (Sr-alginate, Co-alginate, and Ca-alginate). Also, Ni-alginate possessed a higher removal percent, 93.3%, toward Pb2+ than the other ions, taking the sorption order of Pb2+ > Sr2+ > Co2+ > Cd2+ > Zn2+. Therefore, this study focused on using Ni-alginate as a selective sorbent for lead ions. Fixed-bed column was employed for the sorption process. The results for that efficiency are presented as breakthrough curves in view of the impact of various parameters; influent flow rate (1.5, 3.0, and 5.0 mL/min), lead concentration (100, 150, and 200 mg/L), and bed depth of sorbent (3.0, 5.0, and 7.0 cm). Breakthrough modeling including Thomas and Yan models was employed. The outcomes indicated that Thomas theory is more applicable. The overall outcomes indicated that Ni-alginate is recommended for selective removal of Pb2+ from waste solutions.

Cross-Linked Phosphorylated Cellulose as a Potential Sorbent for Lithium Extraction from Water: Dynamic Column Studies and Modeling

Phosphorylated functional cellulose was cross-linked with epichlorohydrin at different ratios because it is a very hydrophilic substance that instantly swells to form a hydrogel when it comes into contact with water. It was aimed to utilize a continuously packed bed column to recover lithium from water under varying operating conditions such as flow rate and bed height. The characterization results confirmed cross-linking based on morphology, structure, surface area, and thermal stability differences. Lithium recovery was more efficient with a low flow rate, but the dynamic sorption process was independent of bed height. The total capacities at the three flow rates with 1.5 cm bed height were 33.56, 30.15, and 25.54 mg g^-1, and the total saturation times at the three different bed heights with 0.5 mL min^-1 flow rate were 659, 1001, and 1007 min, respectively. Only 15.75 mL of 5% H₂SO₄ solution was required to desorb approximately 100% of Li from the saturated sorbent.

Artificial neural network (ANN) approach for prediction and modeling of breakthrough curve analysis of fixed-bed adsorption of iron ions from aqueous solution by activated carbon from Limonia acidissima shell

The present research article explored the potential of activated carbon prepared from Limonia acidissima shell to adsorb total Fe ions from aqueous solution in a packed bed up-flow column. The effect of essential factors such as bed height (3–5 cm), initial concentration (30–50 mg/L), and flow rate (3.32–5.4 mL/min) on the performance of the column bed was investigated. The adsorption capacity augmented with an increase in bed height and initial adsorbate concentration but declined with an increase in flow rate. The maximum uptake capacity of 209.6 mg/g was achieved at 5 cm bed height, 3.32 mL/min, and 50 mg/L initial concentration. The bed depth service time (BDST) model was used to analyze the experimental data and determine the characteristic parameters of the packed bed reactor suitable for designing large-scale column studies. The Adams–Bohart, Thomas, and Yoon–Nelson models were applied to the experimental data to predict breakthrough curves using non-linear regression. The artificial neural network (ANN) based model was able to efficaciously predict the column performance using the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm. A comparison between the experimental data and model results contributed to a high degree of correlation, specifying that the preliminary information was in good agreement with the ANN predicted data.

Removal of Pb2+ Ions by ZSM-5/AC Composite in a Fixed-Bed Bench Scale System

This investigation suggests the implementation of ZSM-5 activated carbon composite as a prolific adsorbent for the continuous elimination of Pb2+ ions from water. Continuous adsorption experiments were performed by varying three parameters such as process flow rate (2-6 mL min-1), bed height (2-6 cm), and initial concentration (250–750 mg L-1). The highest loading capacity of the fixed-bed 213.3 mg L-1 was achieved with optimal values of 2 mL min-1 of flow rate, bed height of 6 cm, and initial concentration of 750 mg L-1, respectively. The breakthrough curves and saturation points were found to appear quickly for increasing flow rates and initial concentration and vice versa for bed depth. The lower flow rates with higher bed depths have exhibited optimal performances of the fixed-bed column. The mechanism of adsorption of Pb2+ ions was found to be ion exchange with Na+ ions from ZMS-5 and pore adsorption onto activated carbon. The breakthrough curves were verified with three well-known mathematical models such as the Adams-Bohart, Thomas, and Yoon-Nelson models. The later models showed the best fit to the column data over the Adams-Bohart model that can be utilized to understand the binding of Pb2+ ions onto the composite. Regeneration of ZSM-5/activated carbon was achieved successfully with 0.1 M HCl within 60 min of contact time. The outcomes conclude that ZSM-5 activated carbon composite is a prolific material for the continuous removal of water loaded with Pb2+ ions.

Performance Evaluation of Pavement Geomaterials Stabilized with Pond Ash and Brick Kiln Dust Using Advanced Cyclic Triaxial Testing

An increase in the generation of industrial waste materials such as pond ash and brick kiln dust represents a serious threat to the earth’s environment. The waste materials have novel characteristics and therefore their physical, chemical, mineralogical, morphological, mechanical, and toxicity characteristics were determined so that these materials can be incorporated as construction materials based on technical and environmental considerations. The purpose of this study is to utilize the wastes in the stabilization of clay geomaterial to outperform existing problems of inadequate strength and stiffness of the subgrade layer in flexible pavements. Mixtures of geomaterials, containing pond ash, brick kiln dust, and their combination were prepared and important engineering characteristics such as the plasticity, compaction, and strength of the mixtures were examined. The measurement of response to dynamic loading is a pre-condition for the accurate characterization of geomaterials used in pavement construction. Using advanced cyclic triaxial testing, this study evaluates the performance of pond ash and brick kiln dust in increasing the stiffness of the geomaterial under cyclic loading. To stimulate the worst field conditions, the stiffness and strength tests were performed under standard and four-day water-soaked conditions. The implementation of several stress-dependent models for the prediction of stiffness was examined. Pond ash and brick kiln dust were found to be effective in increasing the stiffness and strength of the geomaterial. The wastes were the most effectual when added in combination to the geomaterial. The characterization of the wastes was informative in understanding the governing mechanism prevalent in the waste stabilized mixtures. The toxicity characterization study revealed the non-toxic and non-hazardous nature of the waste materials, permitting their use in the construction of pavements. This study recommends the use of wastes in the subgrade of flexible pavements. Further research is needed for performance evaluation of the wastes on silt and sand geomaterials for their wider application.
