Parental Self-Efficacy Among Israeli Older Adults

Parental self-efficacy (PSE) is a central aspect of parenting research. Although parenting continues in older ages, few studies have focused on PSE among older adults. In line with the parenting determinant model, the study examined the associations between psychological distress, social support, loneliness, and PSE in older age.The study used a quantitative cross-sectional survey, including 362 Israeli parents age 65 years and above. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires of psychological distress, social support, loneliness, PSE, and background information.Results revealed that higher PSE was associated with lower psychological distress, higher social support, and a lower sense of loneliness in older adults. The research model explained 36.9 per cent of the variance in PSE among older adults.Mental state and social conditions are important for PSE of older adults; therefore, professionals should ensure the availability of diverse solutions to enable, maintain, and promote well-being through social and familial engagement in this population.

Older Adults' Experiences of How Participating in a Senior Summer Camp Has Affected Their Lives - A Phenomenographic Study

Several municipalities in Sweden organize senior summer camps where older adults can meet and where loneliness and social isolation can be mitigated. Few studies, however, examine how the older adults themselves describe the experience in retrospect and how it might have influenced their daily lives after the stay. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how older adults who participated in a senior summer camp experience the impact the stay has had on their lives. The study has a descriptive qualitative design that uses a phenomenographic approach to explore the variations in the older adults' conceptions of how their participation at the senior summer camp may have affected them. Nineteen older adults aged between 66 and 94 years were interviewed. Three descriptive categories emerge: "Mitigating loneliness," 'Developing as a person' and 'Gaining inspiration.' The study shows that the older adults experience that the stay at the summer camp has had lasting effects on their quality of life. The sense of community at the camp helped them break the experience of loneliness, they improved their self-confidence and gained a positive attitude to life, that it is worth living and that there is much left to experience, regardless of their age.

Older Adults' Views on Social Interactions and Online Socializing Games - A Qualitative Study

Age-related difficulties and quarantine restrictions impede the possibilities to maintain contact with one's social network. Maintaining these contacts may be supported by digital games. To develop effective and feasible digital tools to foster social interaction, we aimed to explore what older adults find important in social contact and what barriers and enablers they foresee in digital gaming interventions as network support aids. Two focus groups and 20 semi-structured interviews (N = 29) with older adults (aged 55-87) were held to explore the research questions. Furthermore, a questionnaire was administered (N = 29) containing measures of loneliness, frailty, and social network size. Participants found 'reciprocity', 'in-person contact', and 'personal connection' important in contact with strong ties. Online games were not used much for socializing but may be used in the future, particularly by less mobile older adults. Future social gaming interventions should be challenging, user-friendly, and offer the possibility to communicate. Digital co-designed interventions that are feasible, challenging, intuitive, and trigger meaningful communication may strengthen social interactions in older adults. They may be a relevant social support tool in periods of interaction limitations due to functional impairment or social isolation.

Types of social activities associated with fewer insomnia symptoms and the mediating role of loneliness in older adults

BACKGROUND

A positive association has been known to exist between social activity engagements and fewer insomnia symptoms in later life. However, little is known about which social activities are associated with insomnia symptoms. Investigating mediating factors in this relationship may contribute to developing effective strategies for the reduction of sleep complaints in older adults. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of loneliness on the relationship between engagement in different social activities and insomnia symptoms.

METHODS

We used secondary data from the 2018 Health and Retirement Study. The study sample included 3236 older adults who responded to a survey on social activity engagement, insomnia symptoms, and loneliness. After adjusting for covariates, simple mediation analyses were performed with bootstrapping to identify the mediating role.

RESULTS

Among the several types of social activities, higher levels of engagement in educational courses and community arts group had a significant and direct relationship with fewer insomnia symptoms in older adults. Mediation analyses confirmed the mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between these specific social activity engagements and insomnia symptoms.

CONCLUSION

These findings provide new evidence for associations among social activity, loneliness, and insomnia symptoms in older adults.

Sociodemographic Differences in Respondent Preferences for Survey Formats: Sampling Bias and Potential Threats to External Validity

Objective

To explore sampling bias as a result of survey format selection by examining associations between characteristics of people aging with long-term physical disability (PAwLTPD) and their preferences for phone or web-based survey format.

Design

A cross-sectional study using a secondary data analysis approach.

Setting

Data were from an ongoing longitudinal cohort study conducted in the community.

Participants

Convenience sampling was used. PAwLTPD who participated in year 2 of the longitudinal cohort study were included. Inclusion criteria were age 45-65 years, English speaking, and self-reported onset of a physical disability at least 5 years prior to study recruitment. Two participants completed the survey using both phone and web formats and were thus excluded; 387 participants (N=387) were included in the analysis.

Interventions

Not applicable.

Main Outcome Measures

Choice of survey format and demographics (age, sex, race and ethnicity, marital status, living arrangement, socioeconomic status) were collected in addition to self-rated physical health.

Results

Participants were on average 58.2±5.6 years old. A total of 33% were male, and 62% were White. Approximately 40% of participants completed phone surveys. The phone survey group was significantly older (t=−4.76, P<.001) and had lower education (U=11133, z=−6.65, P<.001) and lower self-rated physical health (U=15420, z=−2.38, P=.017) than the web survey group. Participants who were White (χ²=60.69; df=1; P<.001; odds ratio [OR], 0.18) or were in a long-term relationship were less likely to choose phone surveys (χ²=42.20; df=1; P<.001; OR, 0.21). Those who earned $10,008 or less annually (χ²=53.90; df=1; P<.001; OR, 5.22) or who lived alone (χ²=36.26; df=1; P<.001; OR, 3.64) were more likely to choose phone surveys. Participants with paid work (χ²=16.81, df=1, P<.001) tended to select web-based surveys, while those on disability leave (χ²=9.61, df=1, P<.01) were more likely to choose phone surveys.

Conclusions

Sociodemographics are associated with survey format choice in PAwLTPD. Findings largely support the existing understanding of digital literacy but also provide insight into the potential occurrence of sampling bias when multiple survey format options are not offered. These findings have implications for investigators who aim to reach a more representative sample of people with disabilities.

Gender and Age Differences in Loneliness: Evidence for People without and with Disabilities

This study examines the relationships between loneliness, gender, and age for people without and with disabilities (moderate versus severe) in Germany. Using data taken from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) for the years 2013 and 2017 and using the UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Loneliness Scale, in general we found that males report lower loneliness scores as compared to those for females. Furthermore, we found a strong association between loneliness and the individual's age, but with differences according to gender and disability status. For example, for males with severe disabilities levels of loneliness decrease with age, whereas for females with severe disabilities the opposite result is found. In addition, we found that participation in leisure activities and having a higher frequency of contacts with family, friends, and social online networks (measured by the relational time index) contribute to reducing loneliness for all individuals. From a public policy perspective, it is necessary to undertake the design, promotion, and implementation of instrumental, emotional, and social support measures for people with disabilities (in particular for females that are severely limited in their daily activities), which can contribute to reducing their loneliness scores and increasing their levels of life satisfaction.

The Effects of Social Participation Restriction on Psychological Distress among Older Adults with Chronic Illness

This study examined how restricted social participation mediates the relationship between chronic illness and psychological distress among community-dwelling older adults. Additionally, the use of the Internet for health care was tested as a moderator to examine whether the relationship between limited social participation and psychological distress differs. Using the multiple-group path analysis approach, 16,032 community-dwelling older adults (65+) from the National Health Interview Survey were analyzed. The findings show that 32.2% suffered from chronic illnesses that limited their daily activities, and 26% reported social participation restrictions to some degree. While having chronic illnesses was associated with greater psychological distress, the association was also through increased social participation restriction (mediation). Furthermore, differences in mediation were found between health information technology users and nonusers (moderated mediation). In contrast to the hypothesis, the adverse relationship between limited social participation and psychological distress was stronger among users, although chronic conditions were associated with greater social participation restrictions among nonusers. The findings suggest that with proper accommodations and interventions that aim to increase the social participation of community-dwelling older adults, the disadvantageous effects of chronic conditions on psychological distress could be ameliorated. Moreover, the importance of such interventions is greater among health information technology users.
