Abstract
There is evidence that diet and nutrition are modifiable risk factors for several cancers. In recent years, attention paid to micronutrients in gynecology has increased, especially regarding Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. We performed a review of the literature up until December 2022, aiming to clarify the effects of micronutrients, minerals, and vitamins on the history of HPV infection and the development of cervical cancer. We included studies having as their primary objective the evaluation of dietary supplements, in particular calcium; zinc; iron; selenium; carotenoids; and vitamins A, B12, C, D, E, and K. Different oligo-elements and micronutrients demonstrated a potential protective role against cervical cancer by intervening in different stages of the natural history of HPV infection, development of cervical dysplasia, and invasive disease. Healthcare providers should be aware of and incorporate the literature evidence in counseling, although the low quality of evidence provided by available studies recommends further well-designed investigations to give clear indications for clinical practice.

Abstract
Background Human wellbeing has been linked with lifestyle factors such as physical activity, diet balance, sleep quality, depression, and anxiety. However, few studies illustrate the relationship between such lifestyle factors and HPV infection. In this study, we investigated the association between lifestyle factors, age, disease status and HPV infection. Participants and methods Participants were recruited through a digital eHealth platform in Shenzhen, Mainland China. Both lifestyle factors and cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) samples to test for HPV outcomes were collected from each participant as a cross-sectional study. In addition, the eHealth platform recorded age and current or history diseases, which were adjusted to apply for both univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Furthermore, lifestyle factors were categorized as different levels to conduct stratification analysis. Results We recruited 149 HPV positive and 346 HPV negative participants through HPV detection. Physical activity and diet balance were significantly associated with HPV infection in lifestyle factors (P values < 0.001) after adjusting for age and current or history diseases. However, stratified analysis showed three factors were insignificant for HPV infection - namely, sleep quality, depression, and anxiety. Most HPV infections involved a sole HPV serotype (83%), and diet balance was the most significant difference between sole and multiple HPV infections. Conclusions Among lifestyle factors, physical inactivity or diet imbalance can significantly increase HPV infection risk. In particular, diet balance might be related to the number of HPV serotypes. Our results suggest that exercising and regulating diet may reduce the risk of HPV infection.

Abstract
Background Although folate deficiency has long been implicated in cancer development, uncertainties remain concerning its role in cervical cancer prevention. In particular, the interaction between human papillomavirus (HPV) and folate in the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) has been little studied. Objective The goal of this study was to evaluate the dose-response association of serum folate with the risk of CIN, and the potential for HPV to modify the risk of CIN. Design We performed a cross-sectional analysis of screening data in 2304 women aged 19-65 y who participated in an ongoing cohort of 40,000 women in China. Both categoric and spline analyses were used to evaluate the dose-response relation between serum folate and CIN risk. Results After adjusting for potential confounders, a statistically significant inverse association between serum folate concentration and at least grade 2 CIN (CIN2+) risk was observed (1st quartile compared with 4th quartile: OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.79; P-trend < 0.01); however, serum folate concentration was not associated with CIN1 risk. The risk patterns are similar when limited to only CIN2 and CIN3. An inverse linear relation between increased serum folate concentration and the risk of higher-grade CIN (CIN2, CIN3, and CIN2+) was also observed (for CIN2+: P-overall < 0.01, P-nonlinearity = 0.96). The highest risk of CIN2+ was observed in women with high-risk HPV types, who also had the lowest serum folate concentrations (P-interaction < 0.01). Conclusions Our study indicates that serum folate is inversely associated with the risk of higher-grade CIN in Chinese women either with or without high-risk HPV infection. Thus, maintenance of normal serum folate levels may prove important for reducing the risk of CIN in women.

Abstract
High folate intake has been suggested as an important factor in cancer prevention; however, previous studies on the relation among folate intake, serum folate, and plasma homocysteine (hcy) are controversial. We conducted a hospital-based, case-control study in Brazil investigating associations between dietary and circulating vitamins B-6 and B-12 and folate, hcy, genotypes of folate-metabolizing enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T, A1298C), 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase (MTR A2756G), methionine synthase reductase (MTRR A66G), and reduced folate carrier (RFC1 G80A) and risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades 1 (CIN1), 2 (CIN2), and 3 (CIN3). The study was composed by 453 controls, 140 CIN1, 126 CIN2, and 231 CIN3. We investigated the joint effects of genetic variants of folate-related genes using genetic risk scores (GRSs) by summing the number of risk alleles for CIN1 and CIN2+ (CIN2 and CIN3 cases). The OR (95% CI) for CIN1 and CIN2+ per each risk allele were 1.29 (1.01, 1.65) and 1.22 (1.01, 1.46), respectively. An association between folate intake and CIN2+ was observed only after stratification according to GRS: crude OR (95% CI) for lower folate intake and GRS ≥ 4 was 1.67 (0.92, 3.04) (P-trend < 0.001) compared with higher folate intake (above the median) and GRS ≤ 3. The CIN2+ risk of lower serum vitamin B-6 and GRS ≥ 4 was 2.14 (0.92, 5.02) (P-trend = 0.05) and lower serum folate (below the median) and GRS ≥ 4 was 0.49 (0.20, 1.17) (P-trend = 0.05) after adjustment for confounding variables and human papillomavirus infection. Our data suggest that polymorphisms in genes related to folate metabolism modify the association of dietary and circulating folate and vitamin B-6 with cervical neoplasia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been suggested that micronutrients such as alpha-tocopherol, retinol, lutein, cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and alpha- and beta-carotene may help in the prevention of cervical cancer. Our aim was to investigate whether serum concentrations and/or dietary intake of micronutrients influence the regression or progression of low-grade cervical abnormalities. METHODS In a prospective cohort study of 391 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1-2 lesions, we measured serum micronutrient concentrations in addition to a self-administered questionnaire about dietary intake. We evaluated the hazard ratio (HR) adjusted for CIN grade, human papillomavirus genotype, total energy intake and smoking status. RESULTS In non-smoking regression subjects, regression was significantly associated with serum levels of zeaxanthin/lutein (HR 1.25, 0.78-2.01, p = 0.024). This benefit was abolished in current smokers. Regression was inhibited by high serum levels of alpha-tocopherol in smokers (p = 0.042). In progression subjects, a significant protective effect against progression to CIN3 was observed in individuals with a medium level of serum beta-carotene [HR 0.28, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.11-0.71, p = 0.007), although any protective effect from a higher level of serum beta-carotene was weaker or abolished (HR 0.52, 95 % CI 0.24-1.13, p = 0.098). Increasing beta-carotene intake did not show a protective effect (HR 2.30, 95 % CI 0.97-5.42, p = 0.058). CONCLUSIONS Measurements of serum levels of carotenoids suggest that regression is modulated by smoking status. Maintaining a medium serum level of beta-carotene has a protective effect for progression; however, carotene intake is not correlated with serum levels of carotenoids.

Abstract
Background: The uterine cervix is the second most common site of cancer among Indian women.Though the human papillomavirus has been demonstrated to be a causative agent for this cancer, a variety of other risk factors are in play, such as sexual and reproductive patterns, socioeconomic, hygienic practices, and diet. The accumulated evidence suggests that cervical cancer is preventable and is highly suitable for primary prevention. The dietary intake of antioxidants and vitamins like vitamin A, carotenoids, vitamin C, folacin and tocopherol is found to have protective effects against cancer of the cervix. Dietary data regarding cervical cancer are still scanty. Objective: The present study was therefore undertaken to study the dietary pattern among uterine cervical cancer patients and normal controls. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 consecutive patients and 60 controls were enrolled from a referral hospital during the year 2004. A schedule inclusive of the food frequency pattern and 24-h dietary recall along with the general information was administered to all the enrolled subjects to describe findings on the food consumption pattern along with other important factors. Results: The mean intake of energy, protein, vitamins, etc., between the cases and controls was not significantly different except for the vitamin C level. Serum vitamin E was found to have lower average in patients as compared to controls. The nutrient intake of cervical cancer patients and controls was grossly deficient in the socioeconomic group studied. With regard to the macronutrient intake, calorie and protein intakes showed a deficit of around 50% when compared to RDA. Conclusion: The food consumption profile was not significantly different between cervical cancer patients and normal controls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Women with human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are at risk for developing squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) of the cervix; however, other factors are required for infections to progress to SIL. We hypothesize that consumption of fruits and vegetables high in antioxidant nutrients may prevent, in part, the development of HPV-associated SIL. METHODS This study is a nested case-control study of 265 HPV-positive women (93 SIL cases and 172 cytologically normal controls) in the Ludwig-McGill Cohort Study, São Paulo, Brazil. Diet was assessed by a self-administered food frequency questionnaire. The association between food and nutrient intake of antioxidants and incident SIL was determined by logistic regression and multinomial regression when comparing LSIL and HSILs. RESULTS Higher reported consumption of papaya was inversely associated with risk of SIL (p trend=0.01) and strongest for >or=1 time/week (adjusted odds ratios (AORs)=0.19; 95%CI, 0.08-0.49). Risk of SIL was reduced among women reporting consumption of oranges >or=1 time/week (AOR=0.32; 95%CI, 0.12-0.87; p-trend=0.02). Nutrient intakes of ss-cryptoxanthin and alpha-carotene were marginally protective against SIL. CONCLUSIONS Frequent consumption of fruits high in antioxidant nutrients appears to be associated with reduced risk of incident SIL among Brazilian women.

Abstract
A review of the literature concerning the design, utilisation and validation of food-frequency questionnaires (FFQ) has been carried out using a semi-systematic approach to obtaining, reviewing and extracting data from articles. Databases were searched from 1980 to 1999. The present review identified 227 validation (from 1980 to September 1999) and 164 utilisation (for 1998 only) studies. A number of design issues have been evaluated through the present review. These include: the need to consider how portion sizes have been described, self-defined giving higher mean correlations; how an FFQ was administered, interviewer-administered giving higher mean correlations for some nutrients; how many items to include on an FFQ, those with the largest number of items having higher correlations. Validation techniques were described. Most validation studies involved comparing an FFQ against another dietary assessment method; only 19 % compared an FFQ to a biomarker. Measurement differences were most commonly assessed by correlation coefficients as opposed to other more appropriate methods. Mean correlation coefficients were highest for Ca and fat, and lowest for vitamin A and vegetables. The utilisation studies showed that FFQ were most commonly used in cross-sectional surveys, with ninety-three of the FFQ being designed to be disease-specific. The present review results were presented to a group of experts and a consensus arrived at concerning the development, validation and use of FFQ. Recommendations derived from the consensus arising from the literature review are presented as an appendix to the present paper.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is common among women in the Indian subcontinent and the incidences and death rates are gradually increasing over the years. Several dietary phytochemicals have been reported to have growth inhibitory and apoptotic effect on HeLa and other cervical cell lines. In this study, using Hoechst 33342 staining, MTT, Annexin V-FLUOS/PI and TUNEL assays we demonstrated that Syzygium cumini extract inhibits the growth and induces apoptosis in HeLa and SiHa cervical cancer cell lines in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The phytochemical, its mode of action and safety issues are yet to be determined.

Abstract
Several studies have reported an inverse association between tomato and/or lycopene intake and the risk of some types of cancer. In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received two petitions for qualified health claims regarding tomatoes, lycopene, and the risk reduction for some forms of cancer. Health claims that characterize the relationship between a food or food component and a disease or health-related condition require premarket approval by FDA to be included on the labels of conventional foods and dietary supplements. Here we describe FDA's review of the scientific data for tomato and/or lycopene intake with respect to risk reduction for certain forms of cancer. The FDA found no credible evidence to support an association between lycopene intake and a reduced risk of prostate, lung, colorectal, gastric, breast, ovarian, endometrial, or pancreatic cancer. The FDA also found no credible evidence for an association between tomato consumption and a reduced risk of lung, colorectal, breast, cervical, or endometrial cancer. The FDA found very limited evidence to support an association between tomato consumption and reduced risks of prostate, ovarian, gastric, and pancreatic cancers.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have linked low folate intake with an increased risk of epithelial cancers, including colorectal cancer and cervical cancer. Riboflavin has received much less attention, but there is increasing interest in the well-established role that flavins play in folate metabolism and the possible synergy of a protective effect between these 2 vitamins. Folate plays a key role in DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation, and this forms the basis of mechanistic explanations for a putative role for folate in cancer prevention. The role of folate in these processes may be modulated by genotype for the common C677T thermolabile variant of methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), homozygosity for which is associated with lower enzyme activity, lower plasma and red blood cell folate, and elevated plasma homocysteine. Riboflavin, as FAD, is a cofactor for MTHFR and there is evidently some interaction among riboflavin status, folate status, and genotype in determining plasma homocysteine, a functional marker of folate status. The MTHFR C677T polymorphism appears to interact with folate and riboflavin in modulating cancer risk in a manner that varies according to cancer site. Most evidence points to a protective effect of this polymorphism for risk of colorectal cancer, but the effect on cervical cancer risk is not clear. The effect of this polymorphism on cancer risk seems to be further modulated by other factors, including alcohol and, in the case of cervical cancer, infection with the human papilloma virus. An additional factor determining the effect of diet and genotype interactions on cancer risk may be the stage of cancer development.

Abstract
Our objective was to provide an update on recent epidemiologic evidence about the role of diet and nutrition on the risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence and cervical neoplasia, taking HPV into account. We conducted a systematic review and qualitative classification of all observational studies controlling for HPV infection published between March 1995 and November 2003 and of all randomized clinical trials published between January 1991 and November 2003. Scientific evidence was classified as convincing, probable, possible or insufficient, as used in a previous study on diet and cancer. Thirty-three studies were eligible for this review (10 clinical trials, 8 observational prospective studies and 15 case-control studies). The few studies on HPV persistence showed a possible protective effect of fruits, vegetables, vitamins C and E, beta- and alpha-carotene, lycopene, luterin/zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Evidence for a protective effect of cervical neoplasia was probable for folate, retinol and vitamin E and possible for vegetables, vitamins C and B12, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Evidence for an increased risk of cervical neoplasia associated with high blood homocysteine was probable. Results did not differ between studies looking at preneoplastic and invasive lesions or between retrospective and prospective studies. The available evidence for an association between diet and nutritional status and cervical carcinogenesis taking HPV infection into account is not yet convincing. Large cohort studies are needed to adequately assess the role of foods and nutrients in cervical HPV carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reliability or validity studies are important for the evaluation of measurement error in dietary assessment methods. An approach to validation known as the method of triads uses triangulation techniques to calculate the validity coefficient of a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ). OBJECTIVE To assess the validity of an FFQ estimates of carotenoid and vitamin E intake against serum biomarker measurements and weighed food records (WFRs), by applying the method of triads. DESIGN The study population was a sub-sample of adult participants in a randomised controlled trial of beta-carotene and sunscreen in the prevention of skin cancer. Dietary intake was assessed by a self-administered FFQ and a WFR. Nonfasting blood samples were collected and plasma analysed for five carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, lycopene) and vitamin E. Correlation coefficients were calculated between each of the dietary methods and the validity coefficient was calculated using the method of triads. The 95% confidence intervals for the validity coefficients were estimated using bootstrap sampling. RESULTS The validity coefficients of the FFQ were highest for alpha-carotene (0.85) and lycopene (0.62), followed by beta-carotene (0.55) and total carotenoids (0.55), while the lowest validity coefficient was for lutein (0.19). The method of triads could not be used for beta-cryptoxanthin and vitamin E, as one of the three underlying correlations was negative. CONCLUSIONS Results were similar to other studies of validity using biomarkers and the method of triads. For many dietary factors, the upper limit of the validity coefficients was less than 0.5 and therefore only strong relationships between dietary exposure and disease will be detected.

Abstract
Many therapies are available for the treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated disease, particularly external genital warts. However, at present, these therapies aim to remove the lesion rather than specifically target HPV infection. When disease and infection are local, as in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), excisional therapies removing lesion and transformation-susceptible cells are highly effective. However, when infection is regional, as is usually the case for the anogenital warts, vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN), penile intraepithelial neoplasia, and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia, then current treatments are generally inadequate, with high recurrence rates. Future therapies will be directly or indirectly antiviral, targeting HPV protein functions or enhancing the ability of the immune system to resolve infection or inducing apoptosis indirectly in HPV-infected cells. In the short to the medium term, immunotherapies for low-grade disease are the most likely to be in the clinic. Vaccines targeting the E1 and E2 early proteins combined with immunomodulators or conventional adjuvants that induce a strong cell-mediated HPV antigen-specific response and good immune memory would be the predicted combination. Vaccines designed to target high-grade intraepithelial disease, even when used in combination with immunomodulators, are unlikely to effect lesion clearance in more than a fraction of the cases. However, they may have a role as adjunct therapy after cervical conization to prevent the recurrence of CIN or HPV reinfection. They certainly appear to have a role in multifocal disease, such as VIN and AIN, where partial clearance may be effected and lesion size reduced enough for effective ablative or excisional therapy. It seems unlikely that anti-HPV chemotherapies specifically targeting HPV protein functions will be in the clinic in the medium term. However, agents such as indole-3-carbinol have shown efficacy in small clinical trials, and if these effects are confirmed in larger, randomized, placebo-controlled trials, they could be clinically useful.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are the cause of most, if not all, cervical cancers. Women consistently positive for oncogenic type HPV infections have a greater risk of developing cervical dysplasia compared with women transiently infected. HPV infection alone appears to be insufficient to produce disease, suggesting that other cofactors may be needed. Folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine, through their role in DNA methylation, may be involved in cervical neoplasia. METHODS This study examined the associations between HPV persistence and circulating folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine levels among 91 low-income Hispanic women. Further, the relation of these nutrients to cervical pathology was evaluated. HPV status was determined at two visits approximately 3 mo apart. RESULTS Adjusted mean circulating concentrations of folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine were not statistically different between women with two positive HPV tests, one positive test, or two negative HPV tests. No association was observed between tertiles of folate, vitamin B12, or homocysteine and HPV persistence risk. Further, adjusted mean levels of these nutrients were not statistically different between cytologic grades. CONCLUSIONS Results from this small study did not support a role for folate, vitamin B12, or homocysteine in HPV persistence or cervical dysplasia.

Abstract
We carried out a clinic-based case-control study to assess serum micronutrients as risk factors for cervical dysplasia among Southwestern American Indian women, a group with high rates of cervical preinvasive lesions. Cases were American Indian women with biopsy-proven cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN I or CIN II/III). Controls were from the same Indian Health Service clinics with normal cervical epithelium. We interviewed women about histories of sexually transmitted diseases, sexual behavior, diet, hygienic practices, cigarette smoking, and reproductive factors. Laboratory assays included serum for retinol (vitamin A), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), and red blood cell folate levels, DNA for human papillomavirus (HPV) typing, and tests for other sexually transmitted diseases. The strongest risks for cervical dysplasia were associated with cervical HPV infection [odds ratio (OR) = 3.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.2-4.6 and OR = 7.9, 95% CI = 4.8-13.1 for CIN I and CIN II/III, respectively]. With adjustments made for HPV infection and other relevant confounders, subjects in the lowest serum retinol quartile were at increased risk of CIN I compared with women in the highest quartile (OR = 2.3, 95% CI = 1.3-4.1). The data suggest that low serum alpha-tocopherol was associated with CIN I/III, although the adjusted OR was not statistically significant (OR = 2.0, 95% CI = 0.9-4.8). Low serum ascorbic acid and red blood cell folate were not associated with cervical dysplasia.

Abstract
Previous observational epidemiologic studies of folate and cervical cancer, as well as folate supplementation trials for cervical dysplasia, have produced mixed results. We examined the relationship between serum and RBC folate and incident invasive cervical cancer in a large, multicenter, community-based case-control study. Detailed in-person interviews were conducted, and blood was drawn at least 6 mo after completion of cancer treatment from 51% of cases and 68% of controls who were interviewed. Blood folate was measured with both microbiologic and radiobinding assays. Included in the final analyses were 183 cases and 540 controls. Logistic regression was used to control for all accepted risk factors, including age, sexual behavior, smoking, oral contraceptive use, Papanicolaou smear history and human papillomavirus (HPV)-16 serology. For all four folate measures, the geometric mean in cases was lower than in controls (e.g., 11.6 vs. 13.0 nmol/L, P < 0.01 for the serum radiobinding assay). Folate measures using microbiologic and radiobinding assays were correlated (serum: r = 0.90; RBC: r = 0.77). For serum folate, multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (OR) in the lowest vs. highest quartile were 1.3 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.8--2.9] and 1.6 (0.9--2.9), using the microbiologic and radiobinding assays, respectively. For RBC folate, comparable OR were 1.2 (0.6--2.2) and 1.5 (0.8--2.7). Similar risks were obtained when restricting analyses to subjects with a history of HPV infection. Thus, low serum and RBC folate were each moderately, but nonsignificantly, associated with increased invasive cervical cancer risk. These findings support a role for one-carbon metabolism in the etiology of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Lycopene is the pigment principally responsible for the characteristic deep-red color of ripe tomato fruits and tomato products. It has attracted attention due to its biological and physicochemical properties, especially related to its effects as a natural antioxidant. Although it has no provitamin A activity, lycopene does exhibit a physical quenching rate constant with singlet oxygen almost twice as high as that of beta-carotene. This makes its presence in the diet of considerable interest. Increasing clinical evidence supports the role of lycopene as a micronutrient with important health benefits, because it appears to provide protection against a broad range of epithelial cancers. Tomatoes and related tomato products are the major source of lycopene compounds, and are also considered an important source of carotenoids in the human diet. Undesirable degradation of lycopene not only affects the sensory quality of the final products, but also the health benefit of tomato-based foods for the human body. Lycopene in fresh tomato fruits occurs essentially in the all-trans configuration. The main causes of tomato lycopene degradation during processing are isomerization and oxidation. Isomerization converts all-trans isomers to cis-isomers due to additional energy input and results in an unstable, energy-rich station. Determination of the degree of lycopene isomerization during processing would provide a measure of the potential health benefits of tomato-based foods. Thermal processing (bleaching, retorting, and freezing processes) generally cause some loss of lycopene in tomato-based foods. Heat induces isomerization of the all-trans to cis forms. The cis-isomers increase with temperature and processing time. In general, dehydrated and powdered tomatoes have poor lycopene stability unless carefully processed and promptly placed in a hermetically sealed and inert atmosphere for storage. A significant increase in the cis-isomers with a simultaneous decrease in the all-trans isomers can be observed in the dehydrated tomato samples using the different dehydration methods. Frozen foods and heat-sterilized foods exhibit excellent lycopene stability throughout their normal temperature storage shelf life. Lycopene bioavailability (absorption) can be influenced by many factors. The bioavailability of cis-isomers in food is higher than that of all-trans isomers. Lycopene bioavailability in processed tomato products is higher than in unprocessed fresh tomatoes. The composition and structure of the food also have an impact on the bioavailability of lycopene and may affect the release of lycopene from the tomato tissue matrix. Food processing may improve lycopene bioavailability by breaking down cell walls, which weakens the bonding forces between lycopene and tissue matrix, thus making lycopene more accessible and enhancing the cis-isomerization. More information on lycopene bioavailability, however, is needed. The pharmacokinetic properties of lycopene remain particularly poorly understood. Further research on the bioavalability, pharmacology, biochemistry, and physiology must be done to reveal the mechanism of lycopene in human diet, and the in vivo metabolism of lycopene. Consumer demand for healthy food products provides an opportunity to develop lycopene-rich food as new functional foods, as well as food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade lycopene as new nutraceutical products. An industrial scale, environmentally friendly lycopene extraction and purification procedure with minimal loss of bioactivities is highly desirable for the foods, feed, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. High-quality lycopene products that meet food safety regulations will offer potential benefits to the food industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retinol and other vitamin A derivatives affect the differentiation and growth of many tissues and have anti-tumour properties. AIM To investigate serum retinol levels in patients with liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to assess its importance as a risk factor for the development of HCC. METHODS Serum retinol levels were measured in healthy volunteers and 175 patients (34 with chronic hepatitis C, 117 with cirrhosis, and 24 with HCC. RESULTS The serum retinol levels (mean +/- s.e.) in ng/mL, were 972.1 +/- 37.7 in the control group and 647 +/- 41.1 in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Serum retinol levels in patients with cirrhosis and HCC were lower than in patients with cirrhosis alone (365.8 +/- 43.1 vs. 438.9 +/- 22.1, P < 0.04). In particular, there was a more significant difference in serum retinol levels between Child-Pugh grade A patients with cirrhosis and Child-Pugh grade A patients with cirrhosis/HCC (serum retinol levels 532.4 +/- 26.7 vs. 366.1 +/- 86.4, P < 0.03). There was a significant difference in serum retinol levels between normal controls and all patients' groups (P < 0.001). There were significantly lower serum retinol levels in cholestatic Child-Pugh grade A patients with cirrhosis compared with noncholestatic Child-Pugh grade A patients with cirrhosis/HCC (411.5 +/- 30.3 vs. 579.7 +/- 32.7, P < 0.0004). Sixty percent of patients with Child-Pugh grade A cirrhosis/HCC had serum retinol levels below 350 ng/mL compared with only 18.4% of cirrhotics without HCC (chi 2-test, P=0.01). No correlation was found between serum retinol levels and alpha FP or any other liver function tests, apart from serum albumin, which showed a positive correlation (r=0.61 P < 0.018). CONCLUSIONS There was a progressive reduction in serum retinol levels from controls to patients with liver cirrhosis. Those patients with cirrhosis and HCC had significantly lower values than patients with cirrhosis alone. Serum retinol levels may be a risk factor for the development of HCC.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies suggest protective effects of lycopene-rich foods on several types of cancer, including prostate and gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, an inverse association between serum lycopene concentrations and several types of cancer has been reported. However, few studies have focused on breast cancer, and they have shown little association between lycopene consumption and cancer risk. In this report, we used the N-methylnitrosourea (NMU)-induced rat mammary tumor model to compare the effects of pure lycopene with a lycopene-rich tomato carotenoid oleoresin (TCO) on NMU-induced mammary tumorigenesis. Rats were fed diets supplemented with 250 and 500 ppm crystalline lycopene or TCO beginning seven days before initiation with NMU (55 days of age) to termination (18 wk after NMU). Neither pure lycopene nor lycopene in the form of a mixed carotenoid oleoresin exerted an inhibitory effect on tumor incidence, latency, multiplicity, volume, or total tumors per group compared with unsupplemented controls. Weight gains in all groups were similar. Assay of serum lycopene concentrations in lycopene-supplemented groups indicated that median levels of 7,12,60, and 87 ng/ml were attained in blood of groups supplemented with 250 and 500 ppm lycopene and 250 and 500 ppm TCO, respectively. The results of this animal study are consistent with epidemiological reports indicating that lycopene does not protect against breast cancer.

Abstract
Consumption of dietary carotenoids, plant pigments found in green, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables, has been linked to decreased risk of cancer. Several intervention trials with beta-carotene, however, have failed to confirm this association. Indeed, in current smokers, beta-carotene appeared to increase risk. These disturbing results have not been explained. Laboratory studies with experimental animals and cells in culture have shown cancer preventive activity for a diverse range of carotenoids. Studies using human and animal cells have identified a gene, connexin 43, whose expression is upregulated by chemopreventive carotenoids and which allows direct intercellular gap junctional communication (GJC). GJC is deficient in many human tumors and its restoration or upregulation is associated with decreased proliferation. This review will focus on the growing body of evidence that carotenoids have unexpected biologic effects in experimental systems, some of which may contribute to their observed cancer preventive properties in models of carcinogenesis.
