Using extended theory of planned behavior to determine factors associated with help-seeking behavior of sexual problems in women with heart failure: a longitudinal study

Spanish adaptation and validation of sexual distress scale in Colombian population

Background/Objective

The adaptation and validation of measures to assess Sexual Distress (SD) are crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Spanish Sexual Distress Scale (SDS) in a Colombian sample and provide a percentile ranking score for a comprehensive understanding of sexual distress among the population.

Method

Five hundred ninety-six people from Colombia (50.08 % women; 49.92 % men) aged 18-60 participated in the study. Exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses and a convergent validity analysis were performed.

Results

The SDS showed a high internal consistency (Ω = .95, α = .94) and a unidimensional model. Significative correlations were found between the SDS and related measures with sexual functioning, further supporting its convergent validity.

Conclusions

The SDS is a valid and reliable measure to evaluate SD in Colombians, with implications for clinical practice and sexual health research. More investigations are needed to address the limitations, strengthen the validity and reliability of the scale, and develop specific interventions based on its results.

Explaining the Help-Seeking Intentions of Adolescents Subject to Sexual Exploitation in Tanzania: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior

The sexual exploitation (SE) of children and adolescents is a universal concern. Numerous empirical studies have examined the prevalence and consequences of this phenomenon worldwide, but there is little information on the factors that determine the help-seeking intentions of adolescents subject to SE in Tanzania. We drew on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to address this knowledge gap. The study had two main objectives. First, we examined four TPB variables (attitudes toward seeking help, perceived social support, perceived social stigma, and generalized self-efficacy) as determinants of the Tanzanian adolescents' help-seeking intentions. Second, we explored the moderating effects of social stigma on the relationship between the examined TPB factors and the adolescents' help-seeking intentions. A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from a stratified random sample of 1,116 secondary school adolescents aged 13-17 (M = 15.66; SD = 1.09). The participants were recruited from two regions in the east and northwest of Tanzania and data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression. The results indicate that the TPB variables of attitude toward seeking help, perceived social support, and generalized self-efficacy were positively associated with the help-seeking intentions of adolescents subject to SE, but not social stigma. Through moderation analyses, we found that social stigma significantly weakened the explanatory power of the attitude toward seeking help. The findings of this study in the context of Tanzania were discussed and implications for policy, practice, and future research were suggested.

Sexual Function and Help-Seeking Behaviors following Childbirth: A Cross-Sectional Study

This study examined 573 postpartum women's perceptions of changes in their sexual function and their help-seeking behaviors. Women residing in Ohio, Michigan, or Pennsylvania, USA, completed an online survey. Most women reported decreased postpartum sexual desire and/or arousal. Among women reporting decreased sexual function, most did not seek help from informal sources of support or health care professions (HCPs). Of those who did seek help from an HCP, in each domain of sexual function, only around half received helpful treatment. Women who did not seek help for their decreased sexual desire or arousal reported greater negative perceived impact of pregnancy/childbirth on their sexual function than women who did seek help.

Factors associated with patient delay for older adults with benign prostatic hyperplasia: A descriptive qualitative study

Based on the theory of planned behavior, the aim of this study was to describe the influencing factors of patient delay intentions and behaviors in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients and to provide a reference for the development of a patient delay intention scale. This study was carried out over 4 months in 2021 in Daqing, Heilongjiang, China. The participants were 20 patients with BPH who were aged 60 to 82 years and experienced patient delay; participants were selected through a purposive sampling method. The data were collected via face-to-face semistructured interviews. Five main themes emerged from the interviews, including an insufficient understanding of symptoms, experiences of coping instead of seeking health care, negative attitudes toward care-seeking, the influence of others on decision-making for care-seeking, and obstacles to seeking health care. In conclusion, the patient delay intentions and behaviors of BPH patients are the result of a combination of many factors.

Behavioral Intention and Its Predictors toward COVID-19 Booster Vaccination among Chinese Parents: Applying Two Behavioral Theories

The booster vaccination of COVID-19 is being implemented in most parts of the world. This study used behavioral psychology to investigate the predictors of parents' intentions regarding the COVID-19 booster vaccination for their children. This is a cross-sectional study with a self-designed questionnaire based on two behavioral theories-protective motivation theory (PMT) and theory of planned behavior (TPB). A stratified multi-stage sampling procedure was conducted in Nanjing, China, and multivariable regression analyses were applied to examine the parents' intentions. The intention rate was 87.3%. The response efficacy (ORa = 2.238, 95% CI: 1.360-3.682) and response cost (ORa = 0.484, 95% CI: 0.319-0.732) in the PMT, were significant psychological predictors of parents' intentions, and so were the attitude (ORa = 2.619, 95% CI: 1.480-4.636) and behavioral control (ORa = 3.743, 95% CI: 2.165-6.471) in the TPB. The findings of crucial independent predictors in the PMT and TPB constructs inform the evidence-based formulation and implementation of strategies for booster vaccination in children.

The impact of heart failure on the sexual response cycle: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Heart failure (HF) is the most prevalent disease among chronic diseases and has been associated with a high prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED).

OBJECTIVE

this study aims to analyze research that has as its object of study the sexual activity of patients with HF.

METHODS

A high-sensitivity search was performed in databases (PUBMED via MEDLINE, Cochrane, EMBASE, Web of Science, SCOPUS AND CINAHL) using descriptors linked to sexuality and heart failure.

RESULTS

Fifteen studies from 7 countries with a total sample of 6244 participants were included.

CONCLUSION

It was identified that patients with HF have alterations in their sexual activities, which are more common in males. Among men, it was noticed that the most reported sexual disorder was erectile dysfunction.

The Effect of Social Norms on Physicians’ Intentions to Use Liver Cancer Screening: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Extended Theory of Planned Behavior

Background

Liver cancer is a globally acknowledged threat to public health, and there is a critical and urgent need to determine factors associated with the use of liver cancer screening and to further promote its use.

Purpose

To examine whether the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) incorporating social norms predicts physicians’ intentions to use liver cancer screening and to identify the associated factors quantitatively, using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) as an example.

Methods

A research framework was established by adding social norms to the TPB, based on which the questionnaire for this study was developed. Through multistage random sampling, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among 292 physicians in Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. Due to the multicollinearity problem of the data, ridge regression was applied to determine the influencing factors of physicians’ intentions to use CEUS.

Results

Most participants (87.30%) reported that they were willing to use liver cancer screening in their clinical practice. The scores of TPB variables were generally higher than those of social norms variables. Ridge regression results indicated that the proposed model was explanatory, which has accounted for 73.5% of the total variance in physicians’ intentions. Analyses also illustrated the significant role of TPB variables (attitude and perceived behavioral control) and social norms variables (personal norms, organizational norms, and industrial norms) on physicians’ intentions to use CEUS.

Conclusion

The study extended the TPB by including the concepts of social norms, which is not only conducive to expanding the knowledge of factors associated with physicians’ intentions to use liver cancer screening, but also provides implications for developing strategies to promote the use of certain health services or products, such as playing the role of core members, holding panel meetings, and establishing information push systems.

Predictors of help-seeking behaviour in people with mental health problems: a 3-year prospective community study

BACKGROUND

The majority of people with mental illness do not seek help at all or only with significant delay. To reduce help-seeking barriers for people with mental illness, it is therefore important to understand factors predicting help-seeking. Thus, we prospectively examined potential predictors of help-seeking behaviour among people with mental health problems (N = 307) over 3 years.

METHODS

Of the participants of a 3-year follow-up of a larger community study (response rate: 66.4%), data of 307 (56.6%) persons with any mental health problems (age-at-baseline: 16-40 years) entered a structural equation model of the influence of help-seeking, stigma, help-seeking attitudes, functional impairments, age and sex at baseline on subsequent help-seeking for mental health problems.

RESULTS

Functional impairment at baseline was the strongest predictor of follow-up help-seeking in the model. Help-seeking at baseline was the second-strongest predictor of subsequent help-seeking, which was less likely when help-seeking for mental health problems was assumed to be embarrassing. Personal and perceived stigma, and help-seeking intentions had no direct effect on help-seeking.

CONCLUSIONS

With only 22.5% of persons with mental health problems seeking any help for these, there was a clear treatment gap. Functional deficits were the strongest mediator of help-seeking, indicating that help is only sought when mental health problems have become more severe. Earlier help-seeking seemed to be mostly impeded by anticipated stigma towards help-seeking for mental health problems. Thus, factors or beliefs conveying such anticipated stigma should be studied longitudinally in more detail to be able to establish low-threshold services in future.

A Multi-Center Structural Equation Modeling Approach to Investigate Interpersonal Violence Screening for Public Health Promotion

Background: Interpersonal violence is a significant public health issue. Routine health screening is a cost-effective strategy that may reduce harmful physical and mental consequences. However, existing research finds consistently low rates of violence screening offered by healthcare providers, e.g., nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians. There is a critical need for research that helps understand how providers' screening behaviors are impacted by individual-level and organizational-level factors to promote the uptake of routine screening for interpersonal violence. Two recent studies, i.e., The Health Care Providers study and Nurse Practitioners Violence Screening study, involved quantitative data collected to measure providers' screening behavior and multi-level factors impacting violence screening. Methods: The current analysis includes a combination of multi-center data collected from The Health Care Providers and Nurse Practitioners Violence Screening studies, respectively. The total sample is 389 providers across the United States. The proposed research develops a system-level multi-center structural equation model framework to rigorously integrate data from the two studies and examine providers' screening behavior for interpersonal violence based upon Theory of Planned Behavior from a quantitative perspective. Results & Conclusions: We successfully examine the efficacy of the Theory of Planned Behavior proposed by Ajzen to predict healthcare providers' screening behavior for interpersonal violence. Organizational factors, e.g., availability of policy for interpersonal violence screening, organizational priority given to violence screening relative to other priorities, and if providers within the health center are interested in improving care quality, were significantly associated with providers' screening behavior. The knowledge and insights generated from our study may facilitate the design and optimization of health professional training and practice environment, and lead to improved women's health and quality of care.

The theory of planned behavior as a behavior change model for tobacco control strategies among adolescents in Botswana

Background

Behavioral intentions (motivational factors), attitudes, subjective norm (social pressures), and perceived behavioral control promote or discourage smoking behavior among adolescents.

Objective

To assess students’ behavioral intentions, attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control on smoking using the Theory of Planned Behavior. The prevalence of smoking among the adolescents is also calculated.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, structured self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from adolescents in primary and secondary schools. Data on demographics, behavioral intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control towards smoking were collected. Pearson product moment correlations and logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with current smoking.

Results

A total sample of 2554 (mean age = 15; Range = 12–18 years) students participated in the study. Twenty-nine percent (n = 728) of the students had tried smoking at least once. Smoking was predicted by attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and intention.There was a strong association between having a parent or guardian, caregiver or close friend who smoked (p < 0.001) and being a smoker. The majority of students (57%) conveyed that adults talked to them about the harmful effects of cigarette smoking and 50% had discussed smoking concerns with their friends. Students who had positive attitudes towards smoking like “smoking makes you confident” were more likely to be current smokers (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.03–2.59). The feeling or conviction that they could refuse a cigarette if offered was an impediment from smoking (OR: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.13–0.26).

Conclusions

Attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control contributed significantly to the students' smoking. Right attitudes must be cultivated and behavioral control must be strengthened for early effective interventions to curtail smoking among adolescents.

The effect of aromatherapy with rose and lavender on anxiety, surgical site pain, and extubation time after open-heart surgery: A double-center randomized controlled trial

To determine the effect of aromatherapy with rose and lavender on the patient outcomes after open-heart surgery (OHS). In the clinical trial, patients were randomized to four groups. One group received routine care, the placebo group received a cotton swab soaked in water and the other two groups received either a cotton swab containing three drops of rose or lavender essence (0.2 ml). A total of 160 patients were randomized into four groups. Intergroup anxiety was not significantly different; however, the reciprocal time-group effect was significant among the four groups. The extubation time was significant among the four groups which related to rose essence group compared with the control group (p < .001) and placebo group (p = .029). The surgical site pain was significant in the rose essence and lavender groups compared to the control group. Aromatherapy can reduce extubation time, surgical site pain severity, and anxiety in patients undergoing OHS.

Assessing Related Factors of Intention to Perpetrate Dating Violence among University Students Using the Theory of Planned Behavior

Dating violence (DV) is a major public health problem among youth. The majority of DV studies in Taiwan involve the assessment of DV without the use of a robust psychological framework to guide research accuracy. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to utilize the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to assess intention and other salient factors related to DV among university students. A two-phase, mixed-method design study was conducted among university students from seven universities in Taiwan, aged 18 to 24 years. In Phase I, questionnaires used were specifically developed based on the TPB, consisting of both direct and indirect measures related to DV. In Phase Ⅱ, questionnaire evaluation and related factors were examined through a two-step process of structural equation modelling (SEM) to test the TPB model. The results of this study found that perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, and attitude toward DV on behavioral intention accounting for 37.5% of the total variance. Among the related factors, attitude toward the behavior was the strongest (β = 0.48, p < 0.001), followed by perceived behavioral control (β = 0.19, p < 0.05). Findings from this study could expand the knowledge base in this important area and might help prevent DV.

Mediated effects of insomnia, psychological distress and medication adherence in the association of eHealth literacy and cardiac events among Iranian older patients with heart failure: a longitudinal study

Background:

Given the importance of improving health for patients with heart failure, the present study examined the temporal associations between eHealth literacy, insomnia, psychological distress, medication adherence, quality of life and cardiac events among older patients with heart failure.

Methods:

With a longitudinal design older patients with echocardiography verified heart failure ( N=468; 50.4% New York Heart Association class II, mean age 69.3±7.3 years; 238 men) in need of cardiac care at seven Iranian university outpatient clinics went through clinical examinations and completed the following questionnaires at baseline: eHealth literacy scale (eHEALS, assessing eHealth literacy); 5-item medication adherence report scale (MARS-5, assessing medication adherence); Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire (MLHFQ, assessing quality of life); insomnia severity index (ISI, assessing insomnia); and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS, assessing psychological distress). All the patients completed the ISI and HADS again 3 months later; and the MARS-5 6 months later. Also, their cardiac events were collected 18 months later. Three mediation models were then conducted.

Results:

eHealth literacy had direct and indirect effects (through insomnia and psychological distress) on medication adherence and quality of life. Moreover, eHealth literacy had protecting effects on cardiac events (hazard ratio (HR) 0.53; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.37, 0.65) through the mediators of insomnia (HR 0.19; 95% CI 0.15, 0.26), psychological distress (HR 0.08; 95% CI 0.05, 0.12) and medication adherence (HR 0.05; 95% CI 0.04, 0.08).

Conclusion:

As eHealth literacy was a protector for patients with heart failure, healthcare providers may plan effective programmes to improve eHealth literacy for the population. Additional benefits of improving eHealth literacy in heart failure may be decreased insomnia and psychological distress, improved quality of life, as well as decreased cardiovascular events.
