Absence of ear advantage on the consonant-vowel dichotic listening test in adolescent and adult dyslexics: specific auditory-phonetic dysfunction

Estimates of functional cerebral hemispheric differences in monolingual and bilingual people who stutter: dichotic listening paradigm

Recent studies indicate functional cerebral hemispheric processing differences between monolinguals and bilinguals who stutter, as well as monolinguals and bilinguals who do not stutter. Eighty native German speakers, half of whom were also proficient speakers of English as a second language (L2), were assessed on a dichotic listening paradigm using CV syllables as stimuli. The participants were organised into four different groups according to speech status and language ability: 20 monolinguals who stutter, 20 bilinguals who stutter, 20 monolinguals who do not stutter, and 20 bilinguals who do not stutter. A right ear advantage (REA) was observed across all groups with no significant group differences in regard to hemispheric asymmetry. Although MWS (18 dB) and BWS (16 dB) crossed over to an LEA at an earlier point compared to the MWNS (5 dB) and BWNS (2 dB), the difference between groups was minor and not significant. Thus, a significant difference in REA resistance, as proposed by other researchers, was not reflected in the current study neither for people who stutter nor for bilinguals. In addition, no meaningful relationship was found between dichotic listening and stuttering severity, as well as the four language modalities (listening, speaking, reading, writing). Thus, we contend that neither stuttering nor bilingualism has any non-trivial effect on functional cerebral hemispheric differences in language processing in dichotic listening.

The Medial Olivocochlear Reflex Is Unlikely to Play a Role in Listening Difficulties in Children

The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) has been implicated in several auditory processes. The putative role of the MOCR in improving speech perception in noise is particularly relevant for children who complain of listening difficulties (LiD). The hypothesis that the MOCR may be impaired in individuals with LiD or auditory processing disorder has led to several investigations but without consensus. In two related studies, we compared the MOCR functioning of children with LiD and typically developing (TD) children in the same age range (7-17 years). In Study 1, we investigated ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral MOCR using forward-masked click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs; n = 17 TD, 17 LiD). In Study 2, we employed three OAE types: CEOAEs (n = 16 TD, 21 LiD), stimulus frequency OAEs (n = 21 TD, 30 LiD), and distortion product OAEs (n = 17 TD, 22 LiD) in a contralateral noise paradigm. Results from both studies suggest that the MOCR functioning is not significantly different between the two groups. Some likely reasons for differences in findings among published studies could stem from the lack of strict data quality measures (e.g., high signal-to-noise ratio, control for the middle ear muscle reflex) that were enforced in the present study. The inherent variability of the MOCR, the subpar reliability of current MOCR methods, and the heterogeneity in auditory processing deficits that underlie auditory processing disorder make detecting clinically relevant differences in MOCR function impractical using current methods.

Auditive training effects from a dichotic listening app in children with dyslexia

Dichotic listening (DL) taps information on the brain's language laterality, processing, and attention. Research has shown that DL responses in dyslexia deviate from the typical pattern. Here, effects of DL training and its correspondence to rapid naming (RAN) and digit span (DS) in typical children and children with dyslexia were assessed. Three groups of third graders participated: two training groups, control training (CT) and dyslexia training (DT), and a control group that received no training (control no training, CnT). All took part in testing pretraining and posttraining. DL measures were on laterality, response scores, and attention. The three groups showed different response patterns: minor changes in CnT, change in all measures in CT, and some changes in DT. RAN and DS scores correlated significantly with some of the DL measures, especially with the attention scores. Our findings support arguments that brain architecture for language in dyslexia is lateralised in the same way as in children without dyslexia. However, the ability to modulate attention during DL is weaker in dyslexia than in typically developing children. A training-induced normalisation of lateralisation was observed in free recall in the dyslexia group, which suggests that DL training may be a promising intervention approach.

Dichotic listening and sentence repetition performance in children with reading difficulties

Numerous investigations have identified weaknesses in speech processing and language skills in children with dyslexia; however, little is known about these abilities in children with reading difficulties (RD). The primary objective of this investigation was to determine the utility of auditory speech processing tasks in differentiating children with RD from those with typical reading skills. It was hypothesized that children, who perform below grade level in reading, would also show poorer performance on both dichotic listening and sentence repetition tasks because of the reciprocal influences of deficient auditory speech processing and language abilities. A total of 180 Hungarian-speaking, monolingual 8-, 9- and 10-year-old children, with and without RD, participated in dichotic listening and sentence repetition (modified by noise and morphosyntactic complexity) tasks. Performances were compared across ability groups, age and gender. Children with RD evidenced significantly poorer performance than controls on both tasks. Effects for age and gender were more noticeable in students with RD. Our findings support the notion that reading deficiencies are also associated with poor auditory speech processing and language abilities in cases where dyslexia is not diagnosed. We suggest that these tasks may be used as easy and fast screening tests in the identification of RD.

Selective attention and the "Asynchrony Theory" in native Hebrew-speaking adult dyslexics: Behavioral and ERPs measures

The main aim of the present study was to determine whether adult dyslexic readers demonstrate the "Asynchrony Theory" (Breznitz [Reading Fluency: Synchronization of Processes, Lawrence Erlbaum and Associates, Mahwah, NJ, USA, 2006]) when selective attention is studied. Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioral parameters were collected from nonimpaired readers group and dyslexic readers group performing alphabetic and nonalphabetic tasks. The dyslexic readers group was found to demonstrate asynchrony between the auditory and the visual modalities when it came to processing alphabetic stimuli. These findings were found both for behavioral and ERPs parameters. Unlike the dyslexic readers, the nonimpaired readers showed synchronized speed of processing in the auditory and the visual modalities while processing alphabetic stimuli. The current study suggests that established reading is dependent on a synchronization between the auditory and the visual modalities even when it comes to selective attention.

Dichotic listening as an index of lateralization of speech perception in familial risk children with and without dyslexia

Atypical language lateralization has been marked as one of the factors that may contribute to the development of dyslexia. Indeed, atypical lateralization of linguistic functions such as speech processing in dyslexia has been demonstrated using neuroimaging studies, but also using the behavioral dichotic listening (DL) method. However, so far, DL results have been mixed. The current study assesses lateralization of speech processing by using DL in a sample of children at familial risk (FR) for dyslexia. In order to determine whether atypical lateralization of speech processing relates to reading ability, or is a correlate of being at familial risk, the current study compares the laterality index of FR children who did and did not become dyslexic, and a control group of readers without dyslexia. DL was tested in 3rd grade and in 5/6th grade. Results indicate that at both time points, all three groups have a right ear advantage, indicative of more pronounced left-hemispheric processing. However, the FR-dyslexic children are less good at reporting from the left ear than controls and FR-nondyslexic children. This impediment relates to reading fluency.

Forced-Attention Dichotic Listening With University Students With Dyslexia: Search for a Core Deficit

Rapidly changing environments in day-to-day activities, enriched with stimuli competing for attention, require a cognitive control mechanism to select relevant stimuli, ignore irrelevant stimuli, and shift attention between alternative features of the environment. Such attentional orchestration is essential to the acquisition of reading skills. In the present forced attention dichotic listening study, adults with moderate and severe dyslexia and nondisabled adults were tested on their ability to switch attention between ears for immediate recall. Blocks of pairs of consonant-vowel syllables were counterbalanced into left-ear first or right-ear first ordered conditions. Significant order effects showed that only those with severe dyslexia were poorer in switching attention to the left ear, whereas both groups with dyslexia were poorer switching attention to the right ear. Shifting left appears to be a normative function of reading level, whereas inferior ability to disengage attending to the left ear to report from the right ear qualifies as a dysfunctional facet of dyslexia with etiological significance. No support was found for the traditional proposition that dyslexia may be associated with atypical left hemisphere lateralization. Combining these results with previous dichotic and neuroimaging research implicates a dysfunctional frontostriatal cognitive control network in dyslexia. With due caution, the results suggest that a neurobiological feature of dyslexia may be a lack of control in downwardly modulating excessive left inferior frontal cortex activations. The results are consistent with impoverished connectedness between left anterior and posterior language areas and, pending future confirmation of these findings, suggest the need for a reconceptualization of remedial programming.

Sport-related concussion and sensory function in young adults

CONTEXT

The long-term implications of concussive injuries for brain and cognitive health represent a growing concern in the public consciousness. As such, identifying measures sensitive to the subtle yet persistent effects of concussive injuries is warranted.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate how concussion sustained early in life influences visual processing in young adults. We predicted that young adults with a history of concussion would show decreased sensory processing, as noted by a reduction in P1 event-related potential component amplitude.

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

Research laboratory.

PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS

Thirty-six adults (18 with a history of concussion, 18 controls) between the ages of 20 and 28 years completed a pattern-reversal visual evoked potential task while event-related potentials were recorded.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

The groups did not differ in any demographic variables (all P values > .05), yet those with a concussive history exhibited reduced P1 amplitude compared with the control participants (P = .05).

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that concussion history has a negative effect on visual processing in young adults. Further, upper-level neurocognitive deficits associated with concussion may, in part, result from less efficient downstream sensory capture.

Distinct neural signatures of cognitive subtypes of dyslexia with and without phonological deficits

Developmental dyslexia can be distinguished as different cognitive subtypes with and without phonological deficits. However, despite some general agreement on the neurobiological basis of dyslexia, the neurofunctional mechanisms underlying these cognitive subtypes remain to be identified. The present BOLD fMRI study thus aimed at investigating by which distinct and/or shared neural activation patterns dyslexia subtypes are characterized. German dyslexic fourth graders with and without deficits in phonological awareness and age-matched normal readers performed a phonological decision task: does the auditory word contain the phoneme/a/? Both dyslexic subtypes showed increased activation in the right cerebellum (Lobule IV) compared to controls. Subtype-specific increased activation was systematically found for the phonological dyslexics as compared to those without this deficit and controls in the left inferior frontal gyrus (area 44: phonological segmentation), the left SMA (area 6), the left precentral gyrus (area 6) and the right insula. Non-phonological dyslexics revealed subtype-specific increased activation in the left supramarginal gyrus (area PFcm; phonological storage) and angular gyrus (area PGp). The study thus provides the first direct evidence for the neurobiological grounding of dyslexia subtypes. Moreover, the data contribute to a better understanding of the frequently encountered heterogeneous neuroimaging results in the field of dyslexia.

Atypical hemispheric asymmetries for the processing of phonological features in children with rolandic epilepsy

We assessed language lateralization in 177 healthy 4- to 11-year-old children and adults and atypical asymmetries associated with unilateral epileptic foci in 18 children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). Dichotic listening results revealed two indices of immature functional asymmetry when the focus was left-sided (BECTS-L). First, children with BECTS-L did not show left hemisphere dominance for the processing of place of articulation, which was recorded in children with BECTS-R and control children. On the contrary, healthy children exhibited a gradual increase in left hemisphere dominance for place processing during childhood, which is consistent with the shift from global to finer-grained acoustic analysis predicted by the Developmental Weighting Shift model. Second, children with BECTS-L showed atypical left hemisphere involvement in the processing of the voiced value (+V), associated with a long acoustic event in French stop consonants, whereas right hemisphere dominance increased with age for +V processing in healthy children. BECTS-L, therefore, interferes with the development of left hemisphere dominance for specific phonological mechanisms.

Central auditory processing in aging: the dichotic listening paradigm

OBJECTIVE

Aging is associated with cognitive changing. Central auditory processing dysfunction may explain some understanding difficulties in elderly. It may be evaluated with the dichotic listening (DL) test, a widely-used experimental paradigm for studying inter-hemispheric interactions and attentional processes. This study examines central auditory language processing with a dichotic listening task in right-handed old subjects according to their age.

DESIGN

Cross sectional-study.

SETTING

memory clinic and geriatric unit.

PARTICIPANTS

Adult group (Ad) consisted in 26 subjects (21 women and 5 men) aged 50-69 years and an old adults group (Old-Ad) consisted in 20 subjects (19 women and 1 man) aged 70 to 89 years.

MEASUREMENTS

DL consisted in a free-recall word task and a digit forced-attention task (forced-right: FR and forced-left: FL) in order to study central auditory language processing. In addition, we used neuropsychological tests to study executive functions and cognitive control, sustained by the prefrontal cortex.

RESULTS

In the free recall condition, we confirmed the classic right ear advantage (REA) in both groups, particularly in older subjects. In the forced condition, we observed an ear advantage with a change in ear asymmetry as a consequence of instruction: REA in FR and a left-ear advantage (LEA) in FL. We compared contaminations by the contra-lateral inattentive ear: reports of the left ear (LE) in the FR condition and reports of the right ear (RE) in the FL condition. Contaminations by the RE in the FL condition were more pronounced in Old-Ad suggesting difficulties in competition between the natural tendency for the RE and the instruction. In the Old-Ad group, the correlation between the RE score in FL and TMT B-A/A suggests an impairment in mental flexibility.

CONCLUSION

DL may be helpful to study central auditory dysfunction in aging. Our results suggest difficulties in attentional control and executive functions. Central auditory dysfunction should be evaluated in elderly because it potentially contributes to difficulty of hearing in noisy environment with consequences in the rehabilitation of presbyacousic subjects. More studies are needed to investigate the predictive value of DL as a marker of cognitive decline, particularly executive functions.

Brain asymmetry for language in dyslexic children

Studies of brain asymmetry in dyslexia have yielded mixed results both with respect to patterns of asymmetry and their cognitive correlates. This paper assessed language lateralisation inferred from dichotic listening with forced attention in a clinical group of young dyslexic subjects. As a whole the dyslexic group showed a deviant asymmetry pattern compared to a control group. Subdivision into two subgroups by receptive language abilities yielded differential patterns within the dyslexia group. Both subgroups exhibited a weaker response pattern to right ear stimuli than the control group. In addition, the subgroup with no language impairment showed bilateral language representation, whereas the subgroup with impaired receptive language abilities showed reversed dominance patterns.

Multiprocess Lateralisation in Dyslexia

Previous studies of behavioural asymmetries in dyslexia have emphasised verbal measures, and have not generally supported differences in functional asymmetry between dyslexic and normal readers. Here a multiprocess approach is taken, employing a sample of adult dyslexic readers. An unusual pattern of lateralisation is found for bargraph recognition, a visual spatial quantitative task. Unlike the right hemisphere pattern found in normal readers, dyslexic readers appear to perform spatial quantitative processing in the left hemisphere. These results are consistent with parietal lobe dysfunction in reading disability, and more specifically with an angular gyrus dysfunction as suggested by recent MRI and PET results. Possible causes are discussed for this right-to-left shift in function, in the face of a left-to-right shift in brain tissue reported in the literature.

The effect of age on attentional modulation in Dichotic listening

The right-ear advantage (REA) in Dichotic listening (DL) reflects stimulus-driven bottom-up asymmetry in speech processing. The REA can be modified by top-down attentional control. We investigated attentional control in DL task as a function of age. A total of 186 participants between the ages of 5 and 79 years were tested. The youngest children demonstrated a REA that was not modified by attention, suggesting that bottom-up functional asymmetry was present. The 10-11-year-olds began to show ability to voluntarily modify DL, but only young adults were fully capable of doing so. In 59-79-year-olds, this top-down attentional control was lost again.

Rethinking a right hemisphere deficit in ADHD

INTRODUCTION

Early observations from lesion studies suggested right hemisphere (RH) dysfunction in ADHD. However, a strictly right-lateralized deficit has not been well supported. An alternatively view suggests increased R > L asymmetry of brain function and abnormal interhemispheric interaction. If true, RH pathology in ADHD should reflect interhemispherically networked and overactivated functioning. The authors evaluated these assertions.

METHOD

Four elements of lateralized brain function were measured: LH specialized, RH specialized, LH with interhemispheric processing (LH/IH), and RH with interhemispheric processing (RH/IH). Next, the authors tested their association with cognitive ability, psychiatric comorbidity, and sibling correlations in 79 children with ADHD.

RESULTS

RH/IH processing was uniquely associated with other outcome measures. There were no associations for independent RH or LH function alone.

CONCLUSION

Interhemispherically networked RH processing is critical in ADHD. In addition, lack of association between LH specialized processing and cognitive ability (especially for verbal cognitive tasks) supports increased RH mediation of task processing.

Auditory interhemispheric transfer in relation to patterns of partial agenesis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum in spina bifida meningomyelocele

Spina bifida meningomyelocele with hydrocephalus (SBM) is commonly associated with anomalies of the corpus callosum (CC). We describe MRI patterns of regional CC agenesis and relate CC anomalies to functional laterality based on a dichotic listening test in 90 children with SBM and 27 typically developing controls. Many children with SBM (n = 40) showed regional CC anomalies in the form of agenesis of the rostrum and/or splenium, and a smaller number (n = 20) showed hypoplasia (thinning) of all CC regions (rostrum, genu, body, and splenium). The expected right ear advantage (REA) was exhibited by normal controls and children with SBM having a normal or hypoplastic splenium. It was not shown by children with SBM who were left handed, missing a splenium, or had a higher level spinal cord lesion. Perhaps the right hemisphere of these children is more involved in processing some aspects of linguistic stimuli.

Dichotic listening and school performance in dyslexia

This study focused on the relationship between school performance and performance on a dichotic listening (DL) task in dyslexic children. Dyslexia is associated with impaired phonological processing, related to functions in the left temporal lobe. DL is a frequently used task to assess functions of the left temporal lobe. Due to the predominance of the contralateral neuronal pathways, a right ear advantage in the DL task reflects the superior processing capacity for the right ear stimulus in the left hemisphere (Kimura, 1963). Previous studies using DL in dyslexia are, however, inconclusive, and may reflect degree of severity of dyslexia. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate lateralized processing in two sub-groups of dyslexia, differing in symptom severity. Two groups of dyslexic 12-year-old children and an age-matched control group were tested with a consonant-vowel DL task. The two dyslexia groups differed in severity through how they responded to training efforts being made in their schools, while otherwise being matched for age, IQ and diagnosis. The D1 (respondent group) group showed a DL performance pattern similar to the control group, i.e. a right ear advantage, while the D2 (non-respondent) group failed to show a right ear advantage on the DL task. The performance on the DL task by the two dyslexia groups may provide better insight as to the degree of reading and writing impairment in dyslexia. 'Cracking the code' and acquiring automatized literacy skills may seem harder for the D2 group children compared to the D1 children. Also, the present study points to the use of DL as a valid assessment tool in clinical work to improve differential diagnoses, particularly in relation to measures of school performance.

Dichotic listening deficits in children with dyslexia

Several auditory processing deficits have been reported in children with dyslexia. In order to assess for the presence of a binaural integration type of auditory processing deficit, dichotic listening tests with digits, words and consonant-vowel (CV) pairs were administered to two groups of right-handed 11-year-old children, one group diagnosed with developmental dyslexia and an age-matched control group. Dyslexic children performed more poorly than controls from their left ears when listening to digits and words and from their right ears when listening to CVs. Direction of ear advantage varied across individuals in both groups when tested with digits and CVs, but ear advantage was stable with words. Several factors that may have contributed to inconsistencies in direction of ear advantage are discussed. When the children were tested in a directed response mode, degree of ear advantage differed significantly between groups with both words and digits. More dyslexic than control children demonstrated clinically significant reductions in dichotic listening performance, but no uniform pattern of deficit emerged. Only the double correct score and the left ear score with CV pairs were predictive of word recognition performance in dyslexic children. Binaural integration deficits are present in some children with dyslexia. Auditory processing disorder assessment may help delineate factors that underlie or are associated with reading impairment in this population.

Evidence of normal hearing laterality in familial schizophrenic patients and their relatives

Dichotic listening (DL) has been used as a tool to investigate possible left cerebral dysfunction in schizophrenia. However, the wide range of DL tests (e.g., words, emotions, sentences) as well as patient groups ("heterogeneity") has introduced several confounders. Assessing relatives of patients with schizophrenia may overcome some of these problems, and may be more useful in determining if loss of functional cerebral laterality in schizophrenia is a state or a trait phenomenon. The fused consonant-vowel DL test was administered to 114 subjects: 20 individuals with familial schizophrenia, 42 of their healthy relatives, and 52 healthy volunteers. We did this to investigate whether the normal language processing asymmetry-a right ear advantage (REA)-is present, and whether it could serve as a marker for genetic liability. General performance accuracy level was lower in schizophrenia patients and their relatives but the expected REA was present in all groups. Adjusting for age, accuracy, and obligate status made no difference. In conclusion, familial schizophrenic patients and their relatives have normal REA and hearing laterality on the fused DL test.

Priming inhibits the right ear advantage in dichotic listening: Implications for auditory laterality

The typical finding in dichotic listening with verbal stimuli is the right ear advantage (REA), indicating a left hemisphere processing superiority, thus making this an effective tool in studying hemispheric asymmetry. It has been shown that the amplitude of the REA can be modulated by instructions to direct attention to left or right side. The current study attempted to modulate the REA by changing the dichotic listening stimulus situation. In Experiment 1, a consonant vowel (CV) syllable prime was presented binaurally briefly before the dichotic stimuli (consisting of two CVs). The prime could be the same as either the left or right ear dichotic stimulus, or it could be a different stimulus. Participants were instructed to report the CV they heard best from the dichotic syllable pair. The traditional REA was found when the prime was different from both dichotic stimuli. When the prime matched the CV in the left half of the subsequent dichotic pair, the REA was increased, while if the prime matched the right half, the REA was reduced. In order to see at which perceptual stage the modulation takes place, in Experiment 2 the prime was visual, presented on a PC screen. The same effect was seen, although the modulation of the REA was weaker. We propose that the memory trace of the prime is a source of interference, and causes cognitive control of attention to inhibit recognition of stimuli similar to recent distractors. Based on previous studies we propose that this inhibition of attention is performed by prefrontal cortical areas. Similarities to the mechanisms involved in negative priming and implications for auditory laterality studies are pointed out.

[Dichotic listening and spect in dyslexic children]

Dichotic listening (DL) was evaluated in 36 children with: verbal dichotic listening test, alternating disyllable dichotic test and non-verbal dichotic listening test. Children were separated into two groups: experimental group with 18 dyslexic children and control group with 18 normal children. Both groups were comparable in gender, laterality and social-economic level. All dyslexic children underwent neuroimaging exam (SPECT). Our data showed that there was a statistical difference between both groups in all DL tests. Abnormal SPECT findings were seen in 50% of the dyslexic children, hypoperfusion of the left temporal lobe being the most frequent abnormality. We conclude that dyslexic children present an impairment of central neurologic processing that may be detected by DL tests, and by functional imaging exam, such as SPECT, as well.

“Soundmorphing”: A new approach to studying speech perception in humans

A problem in current studies of brain activation in speech perception is that most studies use stimuli that are sampled from different categories. This study presents a new approach in creating acoustic stimuli by filtering real words in different ways, thus this enables one to 'morph' the sounds gradually from something like tones to real words while preserving temporal characteristics ("soundmorphing"). This will make it possible to explore steps between tone and speech processing on a gradual scale. This study aimed to investigate more closely the network, involved in the perception of speech and the decoding of auditory (speech-)stimuli. Sets of auditory stimuli were created by dividing real words into several frequency-bands and creating a randomised rearrangement of these components. Four different sets of stimuli were used, containing 1, 2, 3 or 4 frequency bands (total range: 0-2500 Hz). Only the latter one contained intelligible words. During the fMRI session, these four trial types were presented pseudo-randomised. In all conditions, significant activations of auditory cortex were observed. The number of activated voxels and their significance increased over the four trial types. In addition, Broca's area, SMA, left thalamus, and right cerebellum were activated in the most complex and most speech-like condition. Comparing these complexes with the tone-like trials, only the left auditory cortex, left SMA, and cingulate gyrus became significant. These activations reflect the bilateral processing of the auditory stimuli, but only the left temporal areas demonstrated an increasing BOLD response with an increasing number of presented frequency components.

Significant relation between MR measures of planum temporale area and dichotic processing of syllables in dyslexic children

In the present study, we investigated differences between dyslexic and normal reading children in asymmetry of the planum temporale area in the upper posterior part of the temporal lobe and dichotic listening performance to consonant-vowel syllables. The current study was an extension of previous studies in our laboratory on the same participants, now including also girls and left-handers. There were 20 boys and 3 girls in the dyslexic group and 19 boys and 4 girls in the normal reading group. The age of the participants was 10-12 years for both groups. The participants were screened from a population of 950 students in the fourth school grade in the greater Bergen district. The planum temporale area was measured in sagittal magnetic resonance (MR) images. Mean left and right area and asymmetry index were compared between the groups. Dichotic presentations of consonant-vowel syllables made it possible to separately probe left and right hemisphere phonological function, and to correlate this with planum temporale area. The results showed a significantly larger left than right planum temporale area for both groups. However, while the right planum temporale area was similar for the dyslexic and control groups, the left planum temporale was significantly (one-tailed t-test) smaller in the dyslexic group. Both groups also showed a significant right ear advantage to the consonant-vowel syllables in the dichotic listening test. The relation between planum temporale and dichotic listening asymmetry showed a significant correlation for the dyslexic group only, indicating a positive relation between brain structure and function in dyslexic children. The results are discussed in terms of important subject characteristics with regard to brain markers of dyslexia.

The mismatch negativity in evaluating central auditory dysfunction in dyslexia

The mismatch negativity (MMN), a brain response elicited by a discriminable change in any repetitive aspect of auditory stimulation even in the absence of attention, has been widely used in both basic and clinical research during recent years. The fact that the MMN reflects the accuracy of auditory discrimination and that it can be obtained even from unattentive subjects makes it an especially attractive tool for studying various central auditory-system dysfunctions both in adults and children. In this review, we will discuss the applicability of the MMN to studies in dyslexia, which is currently thought, in the majority of the cases, to primarily result either from a dysfunction of the phonological system or a more general auditory deficit. Recent evidence indicates that the MMN enables one to determine which aspects of auditory information are deficiently processed in dyslexia. The MMN might also be helpful in the early definition of the dyslexia type, which would make it possible to start correctly-targeted training programmes before any major learning delays occur. Furthermore, the MMN holds promise of showing plastic changes in the brain of dyslexic individuals underlying the alleviation or remediation of dyslexia in the course of a successful training programme.

Planum temporale, planum parietale and dichotic listening in dyslexia

A reduction or reversal of the normal leftward asymmetry of the planum temporale (PT) has been claimed to be typical of dyslexia, although some recent studies have challenged this view. In a population-based study of 20 right-handed dyslexic boys and 20 matched controls, we have measured the PT and the adjacent planum parietale (PP) region in sagittal magnetic resonance images. For the PT, mean left and right areas and asymmetry coefficients were compared. Since a PP area often could not be identified in one or both hemispheres, a qualitative comparison was used for this region. The total planar area (sum of PT and PP) was also compared between the two groups. A dichotic listening (DL) test with consonant-vowel syllables was administered to assess functional asymmetry of language. The results showed a mean leftward PT asymmetry in both the dyslexic and the control group, with no significant difference for the degree of PT asymmetry. Planned comparisons revealed however, a trend towards smaller left PT in the dyslexic group. In control children, but not in the dyslexic children, a significant correlation between PT asymmetry and reading was observed. A mean leftward asymmetry was also found for the total planar area, with no difference between the groups for the degree of asymmetry. Significantly fewer dyslexic children than control children showed a rightward asymmetry for the PP region. Both groups showed a normal right ear advantage on the DL task, with no significant difference for DL asymmetry. No significant correlation was observed between PT asymmetry and DL asymmetry. The present population-based study adds to recent reports of normal PT asymmetry in dyslexia, but indicates that subtle morphological abnormalities in the left planar area may be present in this condition.

Test-retest reliability for the consonant-vowel syllables dichotic listening paradigm

The present study compared test-retest reliability for dichotic listening (DL) performance to consonant-vowel (CV) syllables under three different attentional instructions. Previous studies of reliability in dichotic listening have shown great variability which most likely reflects the large variations in stimuli, procedures, and techniques used in the different studies. Sixteen subjects were tested twice, 2 weeks apart, with the same dichotic listening procedure, including a divided attention condition and two focused attention conditions on each test occasion. The results showed test-retest correlations ranging from .61 to .86 for the three attentional conditions, with the smallest correlation coefficient for the divided attention condition.
