Abstract
Asphaltenes can cause operational challenges in petroleum production facilities and adversely affect production by adsorption on mineral surfaces and alteration of the oil wettability of reservoirs. Therefore, understanding asphaltene adsorption mechanisms and their effects is crucial to improving the efficiency of oil production and reducing costs. In this study, we focus on understanding the impact of asphaltene concentration and the depositing environment of asphaltene adsorption on solid surfaces using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) technique. The initial and long-term kinetics of adsorption at different concentrations were examined on three different solid surfaces including silicon dioxide to represent quartz mineral, stainless steel, and gold. The frequency-dissipation data showed evidence of monolayer adsorption initially, followed by multilayer formation. At short times, the adsorbed mass increased linearly with time, suggesting that the process was kinetically controlled rather than diffusion-controlled. The results were reproducible and did not depend on convection velocity but did depend on the surface material. At later stages, the monolayer development appeared to follow the random sequential adsorption (RSA) theory. Once multilayer adsorption commenced, the rates agreed well with the two-layer model of Zhu and Gu, 1990. The impact of asphaltene adsorption on the wettability of the surface was examined using contact angle studies, which showed decreasing water wettability with an increase in the adsorbed mass. The contact angle of water after 12 h of adsorption leveled off at around 100° on all three surfaces. Contact angle measurements were also used to evaluate if brine salinity causes the wettability alteration of surfaces with the adsorbed asphaltene. The results indicate that at 3% NaCl solution, the contact angle decreased only slightly by less than 2°.

Abstract
Long-time contact of heavy crude oil with rock leads to an adsorption phenomenon, which causes the rock surface to become oil-wet and appears as a barrier to the fluid flow in the porous media. However precise understanding of how asphaltene fractions influence sand wettability is lacking. The wetness of neat and asphaltene-aged sandstone was calculated using two relative permeability and contact angle methods. Then the molecular interaction between asphaltene and sand minerals was systematically analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the zeta potential was representative of electrostatic properties and surface charge alteration of the sand after these phenomena. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis also showed elemental mapping and dispersion of asphaltene particles on the rock surface. According to contact angle and EDX analyses of asphaltene samples, the contact angle rises from 115° to 141° by an increase in carbon adsorption on the sand surface from 8.23 to 41.56%. Spectroscopy results demonstrated that hydrogen-bonding, π-bonding, and sulfur-containing compounds such as sulfoxide improve asphaltene adsorption onto the sand surface. The higher the aromaticity index and hydrogen potential index of asphaltene, the greater the ability of asphaltene to change wettability. Adsorption of surface active components would make the surface charge of the sand more negative. The presence of nitrogen/sulfur-containing functional groups on the sand surface changed the electrostatic properties, as a sand surface coated with asphaltene would reduce the percentage of metal cations.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are naturally occurring amphiphiles that are being actively pursued as alternatives to synthetic surfactants in cleaning, personal care, and cosmetic products. On the basis of their ability to mobilize and disperse hydrocarbons, biosurfactants are also involved in the bioremediation of oil spills. Rhamnolipids are low molecular weight glycolipid biosurfactants that consist of a mono- or di-rhamnose head group and a hydrocarbon fatty acid chain. We examine here the micellization of purified mono-rhamnolipids and di-rhamnolipids in aqueous solutions and their adsorption on model solid surfaces. Rhamnolipid micellization in water is endothermic; the CMC (critical micellization concentration) of di-rhamnolipid is lower than that of mono-rhamnolipid, and both CMCs decrease upon NaCl addition. Rhamnolipid adsorption on gold surface is mostly reversible and the adsorbed layer is rigid. A better understanding of biosurfactant self-assembly and adsorption properties is important for their utilization in consumer products and environmental applications.

Abstract
Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) conveniently monitors mass and mechanical property changes of thin films on solid substrates with exquisite resolution. QCM-D is frequently used to measure dissolved solute/sol adsorption isotherms and kinetics. Unfortunately, currently available methodologies to interpret QCM-D data treat the adlayer as a homogeneous medium, which does not adequately describe solution-adsorption physics. Tethering of the adsorbate to the solid surface is not explicitly recognized, and the liquid solvent is included in the adsorbate mass, which is especially in error for low coverages. Consequently, the areal mass of adsorbate (i.e., solute adsorption) is overestimated. Further, friction is not considered between the bound adsorbate and the free solvent flowing in the adlayer. To overcome these deficiencies, we develop a two-phase (2P) continuum model that self-consistently determines adsorbate and liquid-solvent contributions and includes friction between the attached adsorbate and flowing liquid solvent. We then compare the proposed 2P model to those of Sauerbrey for a rigid adlayer and Voinova et al. for a viscoelastic-liquid adlayer. Effects of 2P-adlayer properties are examined on QCM-D-measured frequency and dissipation shifts, including adsorbate volume fraction and elasticity, adlayer thickness, and overtone number, thereby guiding data interpretation. We demonstrate that distinguishing between adsorbate adsorption and homogeneous-film adsorption is critical; failing to do so leads to incorrect adlayer mass and physical properties.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Sodium citrate (Na3Cit) has been proven to improve the oil sands extraction recovery, but its mechanism is still unclear. Here we hypothesize that the presence of Na3Cit affects the asphaltene behaviour at the oil-water interface, which enhances oil-water separation and, thereby, heavy oil recovery. EXPERIMENTS Na3Cit-asphaltene interaction was first investigated on their interfacial shear rheology at one heptol-water interface. Na3Cit-asphaltene interaction was further revealed by measuring the interaction forces between two heptol-water interfaces using the atomic force microscopy droplet technique combined with the Stokes-Reynolds-Young-Laplace (SRYL) model. Interfacial properties were further illustrated through interfacial tension, zeta potential, Langmuir trough, and FE-SEM. FINDINGS Na3Cit was found to weaken the strength of the asphaltene film at the heptol-water interface. Moreover, Na3Cit could diminish the adhesion forces observed between two asphaltene-in-heptol droplets in high salinity solutions. Besides, Na3Cit also made the asphaltene-in-heptol droplet more negatively charged. These results collectively suggest that Na3Cit-asphaltene interaction results in a looser and more elastic asphaltene interfacial network with the slow formation and reduces the adhesion between two interfaces, all of which are most likely the consequence of increased electrostatic repulsion between asphaltene interfacial nanoaggregates. Our study provided new understandings of Na3Cit-asphaltene interactions at the interface.

Abstract
Asphaltenes in crude oil play a pivotal role in reservoir oil production because they control rock-surface wettability. Upon crude oil invasion into a brine-filled reservoir trap, rock adherence of sticky asphaltene agglomerates formed at the crude oil/brine interface can change the initially water-wet porous medium into mixed-oil wetting. If thick, stable water films coat the rock surfaces, however, asphaltenic-oil adhesion is thought to be prevented. We investigate whether water films influence the uptake of asphaltenes in crude oil onto silica surfaces. Water films of known thickness are formed at a silica surface in a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation and contacted by toluene-solubilized asphaltene. We confirm that thick water films prevent asphaltene molecular contact with the silica surface blocking asphaltene adhesion. The thicker the water film, the smaller is the amount of asphaltene deposited. Film thickness necessary for complete blockage onto silica is greater than about 500 nm, well beyond the range of molecular-chain contact. Water films of thickness less than 500 nm, sandwiched between toluene and solid silica, apparently rupture into thick water pockets and interposed molecularly thin water layers that permit asphaltene adherence.

Abstract
The adsorption of an acidic polyaromatic asphaltene model compound (C5PeC11) and indigenous C6-asphaltenes onto the liquid-solid surface is studied. Model compound C5PeC11 exhibits a similar type of adsorption with a plateau adsorbed amount as C6-asphaltenes onto three surfaces (silica, calcite, and stainless steel). Model compound BisAC11, with aliphatic end groups and no acidic functionality, does not adsorb at the liquid-silica surface, indicating the importance of polar interactions on adsorption. The values of the adsorption enthalpy characterized by the ΔHz parameter (the enthalpy at zero coverage) indicate that the type of adsorption and the driving force depend on the surface, a key feature when discussing asphaltene deposition. The adsorption of C5PeC11 onto silica is shown to be driven primarily by H bonding (ΔHz = -34.9 kJ/mol), unlike adsorption onto calcite where polar van der Waals and acidic/basic interactions are thought to be predominant (ΔHz = -23.5 kJ/mol). Interactions between C5PeC11 and stainless steel are found to be weak (ΔHz = -7.7 kJ/mol). Comparing C6-asphaltenes and their esterified counterpart shows that adsorption at the liquid-solid surface is not influenced by the formation of H bonds. This was evidenced by the similar adsorbed amounts obtained. Finally, C5PeC11 captures, to a certain extent, the adsorption interactions of asphaltenes present at the calcite-oil and stainless steel-oil surfaces.

Abstract
The adsorption of asphaltenes onto flat solid surfaces modified with mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of aliphatic and aromatic trichlorosilanes with varying wettabilities, aromaticities, and thicknesses is tested. The mixed SAMs are characterized by means of contact angle to assess hydrophobicity and molecular and chemical uniformity, spectroscopic ellipsometry to measure the thickness of the films, and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy to assess chemical and molecular composition. The molecular characteristics of the adsorbed asphaltene layer and the extent of asphaltene adsorption are determined using NEXAFS and spectroscopic ellipsometry, respectively. The SAMs are formed by depositing phenyl-, phenethyl-, butyl-, and octadecyl- trichlorosilanes from toluene solutions onto silica-coated substrates; the chemical composition and the wettability of the SAM surface is tuned systematically by varying the trichlorosilane composition in the deposition solutions. The adsorption of asphaltenes on the substrates does not correlate strongly with the SAM chemical composition. Instead, the extent of asphaltene adsorption decreases with increasing SAM thickness. This observation suggests that the leading interaction governing the adsorption of asphaltenes is their interaction with the polar silica substrate and that the chemical composition of the SAM is of secondary importance.

Abstract
The adsorption of asphaltenes onto flat silica surfaces modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkyltrichlorosilanes of varying thickness due to a variable number of carbon atoms (N(C)) has been studied by means of contact angle measurements, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The extent of asphaltene adsorption was found to depend primarily on the ability of the SAM layer to shield the underlying silicon substrate from interacting with the asphaltenes present in solution. Specifically, asphaltene adsorption decreased with an increase in N(C) and/or an increase in SAM grafting density, sigma(SAM), (i.e., number of SAM molecules per unit area). The effect of the solvent quality on the extent of asphaltene adsorption was gauged by adsorbing asphaltenes from toluene, 1-methylnaphthalene, tetralin, decalin, and toluene-heptanes mixtures. The extent of asphaltene adsorption was found to increase proportionally with a decrease in the Hildebrand solubility parameter of the solvent.
