Synthesis and application studies of chitosan acryloylthiourea derivative for the separation of rare earth elements

Facile synthesis of eco-friendly alginate-chitosan bio-adsorbent for critical raw materials adsorption: A comprehensive study

Sustainable management of critical raw materials is of paramount importance to ensure a steady supply and reduce environmental impact. The application of newly synthesized and environmentally friendly ALG@CS material as a bio-adsorbent for the effective rare earth elements removal from aqueous solution has been presented. The synthesized material underwent FTIR, XPS, EDX, and SEM analysis to determine its suitability for metal uptake. To evaluate the adsorption capacity of ALG@CS for rare earth elements several factors were taken into consideration. These factors included alginate:chitosan ratios, bead size, pH level, composite mass, interaction time, metal ion concentration, and temperature, being all varied during the batch mode evaluation process. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 145.90 mg La(III)/g, 168.44 mg Ce(III)/g, 132.51 mg Pr(III)/g, 128.40 mg Nd(III)/g, 154.36 mg Sm(III)/g, and 165.10 mg Ho(III)/g. The equilibrium data fits well with non-linear three-parameter Sips and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. The PSO model finds the highest process suitability. The synthesized ALG@CS bio-adsorbent showed excellent regenerative capacity in ten cycles, making it a suitable adsorbent for rare earth elements uptake. The unique bio-adsorbents combination allows for efficient critical raw materials adsorption providing a promising solution for their recovery and recycling.

Effect of Lanthanum Sorption on the Behavior of Rarely Crosslinked Acidic and Basic Polymer Hydrogels during Remote Interaction

This present study is targeted at the complex investigation of the behavior of interpolymer systems based on acidic rarely crosslinked polymeric hydrogels (polyacrylic acid hydrogel (hPAA); polymethacrylic acid hydrogel (hPMAA)) and basic rarely crosslinked polymeric hydrogels (poly-4-vinylpyridine hydrogel (hP4VP), specifically the poly-2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine hydrogel (hP2M5VP)) either in an aqueous medium or lanthanum nitrate solution. We found that the transition of the polymeric hydrogels in the developed interpolymer systems (hPAA-hP4VP, hPMAA-hP4VP, hPAA-hP2M5VP, and hPMAA-hP2M5VP) into highly ionized states leads to significant changes in electrochemical, conformational, and sorption properties of the initial macromolecules. The subsequent mutual activation effect demonstrates strong swelling of both hydrogels in the systems. The sorption efficiency of lanthanum by the interpolymer systems is 94.51% (33%hPAA:67%hP4VP), 90.80% (17%hPMAA-83%hP4VP), 91.55% (67%hPAA:33%hP2M5VP), and 90.10% (50%hPMAA:50%hP2M5VP). An advantage of the interpolymer systems (compared to individual polymeric hydrogels) is the strong growth of their sorption properties (up to 35%) due to high ionization states. Interpolymer systems can be considered new-generation sorbents for further application in the industry for highly effective sorption of rare earth metals.

La (III) Separation by Tri Octyl Phosphine Oxide (Cyanex 921) Based on Amberlite Xad-4 Chelating Resin

The novel core–shell type polymeric supports with accessible phosphorus groups were synthesised in the search for new reactive materials designed for the synthesis of functional resins. Amberlite XAD-4 adsorbent was impregnated with tri octyl phosphine oxides (Cyanex 921), which were then polymerized in the polymer carrier structure. The syntheses were evaluated by capturing FT-IR spectra, SEM micrographs, and analysing the sorption process. Batch studies were conducted to study the influence of some factors like pH, contact time, the metal ions concentration, and temperature on sorption efficiency of La (III) ions. The results showed that the optimum conditions were at pH equal to 0.5 and an equilibrium contact time of 30 min. According to the results of the sorption data analysis, the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models were better fitted than the other estimated models. The sorption capacity of La (III) ions into impregnated resin as adsorbent martial was 54.25 mg g−1. The results revealed that the used adsorbent has been used successfully as a promising material for the elimination and recovery of La ions from the aqueous solutions. The impregnated resin exhibits a high chemical stability, reusability and fast equilibration. Further, the above procedure has been successfully employed for the application of real sample.

Scandium-microorganism interactions in new biotechnologies

Scandium (Sc) plays a special role in high-tech industries because of its wide application in green, space, and defense technologies. However, Sc mining and purification are problematic due to political, technological, and environmental difficulties. The deficit of this element limits global technological development. One sustainable solution to this problem is to use microorganisms to extract Sc from ore and waste, as well as to concentrate and separate it from other elements. Sc also demonstrates attractive metabolic effects on microbes that is of great interest in white biotechnology. Sc increases the production of proteins and secondary metabolites and activates poorly expressed genes. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of current knowledge on the application of Sc-microorganism interactions in promising biotechnologies, its perspectives, and future challenges.

Biological, biomolecular, and bio-inspired strategies for detection, extraction, and separations of lanthanides and actinides

Lanthanides and actinides are elements of ever-increasing technological importance in the modern world. However, the similar chemical and physical properties within these groups make purification of individual elements a challenge. Current industrial standards for the extraction, separation, and purification of these metals from natural sources, recycled materials, and industrial waste are inefficient, relying upon harsh conditions, repetitive steps, and ligands with only modest selectivity. Biological, biomolecular, and bio-inspired strategies towards improving these separations and making them more environmentally sustainable have been researched for many years; however, these methods often have insufficient selectivity for practical application. Recent developments in the understanding of how lanthanides are selectively acquired and used by certain bacteria offer the opportunity for a newer, more efficient take on these designs, as well as the possibility for fundamentally new designs and strategies. Herein, we review current cell-based and biomolecular (primarily small-molecule and protein-based) methods for detection, extraction, and separations of f-block elements. We discuss how the increasing knowledge regarding the selective recognition, uptake, trafficking, and storage of these elements in biological systems has informed and will continue to promote development of novel approaches to achieve these ends.
