The microspheres/hydrogels scaffolds based on the proteins, nucleic acids, or polysaccharides composite as carriers for tissue repair: A review

There are many studies on specific macromolecules and their contributions to tissue repair. Macromolecules have supporting and protective effects in organisms and can help regrow, reshape, and promote self-repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. Macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides, can be constructed into hydrogels for the preparation of slow-release drug agents, carriers for cell culture, and platforms for gene delivery. Hydrogels and microspheres are fabricated by chemical crosslinking or mixed co-deposition often used as scaffolds, drug carriers, or cell culture matrix, provide proper mechanical support and nutrient delivery, a well-conditioned environment that to promote the regeneration and repair of damaged tissues. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in the construction of macromolecules into hydrogels and microspheres based on the proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and other polymer and their application in tissue repair. We then discuss the latest research trends regarding the advantages and disadvantages of these composites in repair tissue. Further, we examine the applications of microspheres/hydrogels in different tissue repairs, such as skin tissue, cartilage, tumor tissue, synovial, nerve tissue, and cardiac repair. The review closes by highlighting the challenges and prospects of microspheres/hydrogels composites.

Microbe Encapsulation for Selective Rare-Earth Recovery from Electronic Waste Leachates

Rare earth elements (REEs) are indispensable components of many green technologies and of increasing demand globally. However, refining REEs from raw materials using current technologies is energy intensive and enviromentally damaging. Here, we describe the development of a novel biosorption-based flow-through process for selective REE recovery from electronic wastes. An Escherichia coli strain previously engineered to display lanthanide-binding tags on the cell surface was encapsulated within a permeable polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel at high cell density using an emulsion process. This microbe bead adsorbent contained a homogenous distribution of cells whose surface functional groups remained accessible and effective for selective REE adsorption. The microbe beads were packed into fixed-bed columns, and breakthrough experiments demonstrated effective Nd extraction at a flow velocity of up to 3 m/h at pH 4-6. The microbe bead columns were stable for reuse, retaining 85% of the adsorption capacity after nine consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles. A bench-scale breakthrough curve with a NdFeB magnet leachate revealed a two-bed volume increase in breakthrough points for REEs compared to non-REE impurities and 97% REE purity of the adsorbed fraction upon breakthrough. These results demonstrate that the microbe beads are capable of repeatedly separating REEs from non-REE metals in a column system, paving the way for a biomass-based REE recovery system.

Microfluidics for silica biomaterials synthesis: opportunities and challenges

The rational design and controllable synthesis of silica nanomaterials bearing unique physicochemical properties is becoming increasingly important for a variety of biomedical applications from imaging to drug delivery. Microfluidics has recently emerged as a promising platform for nanomaterial synthesis, providing precise control over particle size, shape, porosity, and structure compared to conventional batch synthesis approaches. This review summarizes microfluidics approaches for the synthesis of silica materials as well as the design, fabrication and the emerging roles in the development of new classes of functional biomaterials. We highlight the unprecedented opportunities of using microreactors in biomaterial synthesis, and assess the recent progress of continuous and discrete microreactors and the associated biomedical applications of silica materials. Finally, we discuss the challenges arising from the intrinsic properties of microfluidics reactors for inspiring future research in this field.

Artificial inorganic biohybrids: The functional combination of microorganisms and cells with inorganic materials

Biohybrids can be defined as the functional combination of proteins, viable cells or microorganisms with non-biological materials. This article reviews recent findings on the encapsulation of microorganisms and eukaryotic cells in inorganic matrices such as silica gels or cements. The entrapment of biological entities into a support material is of great benefit for processing since the encapsulation matrix protects sensitive cells from shear forces, unfavourable pH changes, or cytotoxic solvents, avoids culture-washout, and simplifies the separation of formed products. After reflecting general aspects of such an immobilization as well as the chemistry of the inorganic matrices, we focused on manufacturing aspects and the application of such biohybrids in biotechnology, medicine as well as in environmental science and for civil engineering purpose.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The encapsulation of living cells and microorganisms became an intensively studied and rapidly expanding research field with manifold applications in medicine, bio- and environmental technology, or civil engineering. Here, the use of silica or cements as encapsulation matrices have the advantage of a higher chemical and mechanical resistance towards harsh environmental conditions during processing compared to their polymeric counterparts. In this perspective, the article gives an overview about the inorganic material systems used for cell encapsulation, followed by reviewing the most important applications. The future may lay in a combination of the currently achieved biohybrid systems with additive manufacturing techniques. In a longer perspective, this would enable the direct printing of cell loaded bioreactor components.
