Word segmentation in phonemically identical and prosodically different sequences using cochlear implants: A case study

Accuracy and cue use in word segmentation for cochlear-implant listeners and normal-hearing listeners presented vocoded speech

Cochlear-implant (CI) listeners experience signal degradation, which leads to poorer speech perception than normal-hearing (NH) listeners. In the present study, difficulty with word segmentation, the process of perceptually parsing the speech stream into separate words, is considered as a possible contributor to this decrease in performance. CI listeners were compared to a group of NH listeners (presented with unprocessed speech and eight-channel noise-vocoded speech) in their ability to segment phrases with word segmentation ambiguities (e.g., "an iceman" vs "a nice man"). The results showed that CI listeners and NH listeners were worse at segmenting words when hearing processed speech than NH listeners were when presented with unprocessed speech. When viewed at a broad level, all of the groups used cues to word segmentation in similar ways. Detailed analyses, however, indicated that the two processed speech groups weighted top-down knowledge cues to word boundaries more and weighted acoustic cues to word boundaries less relative to NH listeners presented with unprocessed speech.

Supra-normal skills in processing of visuo-auditory prosodic information by cochlear-implanted deaf patients

Cochlear implanted (CI) adults with acquired deafness are known to depend on multisensory integration skills (MSI) for speech comprehension through the fusion of speech reading skills and their deficient auditory perception. But, little is known on how CI patients perceive prosodic information relating to speech content. Our study aimed to identify how CI patients use MSI between visual and auditory information to process paralinguistic prosodic information of multimodal speech and the visual strategies employed. A psychophysics assessment was developed, in which CI patients and hearing controls (NH) had to distinguish between a question and a statement. The controls were separated into two age groups (young and aged-matched) to dissociate any effect of aging. In addition, the oculomotor strategies used when facing a speaker in this prosodic decision task were recorded using an eye-tracking device and compared to controls. This study confirmed that prosodic processing is multisensory but it revealed that CI patients showed significant supra-normal audiovisual integration for prosodic information compared to hearing controls irrespective of age. This study clearly showed that CI patients had a visuo-auditory gain more than 3 times larger than that observed in hearing controls. Furthermore, CI participants performed better in the visuo-auditory situation through a specific oculomotor exploration of the face as they significantly fixate the mouth region more than young NH participants who fixate the eyes, whereas the aged-matched controls presented an intermediate exploration pattern equally reported between the eyes and mouth. To conclude, our study demonstrated that CI patients have supra-normal skills MSI when integrating visual and auditory linguistic prosodic information, and a specific adaptive strategy developed as it participates directly in speech content comprehension.

Word segmentation based on prosody in Parkinson's Disease

While Parkinson's Disease (PD) impacts the production of prosody and may lead to dysprosody, its effect on the perception of prosody is less clear. In the current study, we investigated how people with PD (PwPD) segment continuous speech using prosodic cues. We used phonemically identical and prosodically different sequences in French. Twenty-three PwPD and 30 controls took part in the study. PwPD showed similar performance to controls (mean difference in terms of correct responses = 2%, 95% confidence interval = [-4%; 8%]). Using Bayesian statistics, our data is 3.6 times more in favour of the null model compared to the alternative model (i.e. difference between PwPD and controls). It thus seems unlikely that PD impacts the perception of prosody systematically. Furthermore, the cognitive performance of PwPD predicted their performance in our segmentation task. This suggests interesting pathways for future research on the mechanisms underlying the impact of PD on speech processing. Clinically, our findings suggest that adequate evaluation of the cognitive capacity of PwPD would help speech and language therapists in assessing speech processing skills in PwPD and in managing their speech impairments.
