Abstract
Interprofessional education is one of the interventions used to increase health care students' motivation for working with older patients. Previous research about such interventions has been conducted without the use of control groups and has given inconclusive results. The objective of the present curricular resource was: Does geriatric paper-based interprofessional education influence students' interest in treating older people? During a one-year period, undergraduate fourth-year medical and third-year nursing students wrote four health care plans for four different paper-based older patient cases. In the intervention group students were paired up in interprofessional couples. In the control group students made the assignment alone. Interest for working with older patients was measured on a 5-point Likert scale before and one year after the intervention. In both groups, no significant change was found. Before-interest score of the interprofessional group was relatively high (3.8) so the non-significant results may be due to a ceiling effect. Nursing students' interest in treating older people at the start of the research was higher than medical students' interest.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Global population aging poses a significant global challenge, necessitating an increased demand for proficient caregivers specialized in elderly care. In our study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to synthesize the evidence concerning nursing students' willingness to participate in caring for older people. METHODS Eligibility criteria focused on cross-sectional studies involving nursing students' willingness to participate in caring for older people and were reported in English or Chinese. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WANFANG databases were searched from inception until July 24, 2022. The methodological quality assessment in the included studies was evaluated using the AHRQ instrument. The pooled effects of the nursing students' willingness to participate in caring for older people were computed using a random-effects model. Funnel plots and Egger's test were employed to evaluate publication bias. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis were performed to explore the sources of heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to verify the robustness of the meta-analysis findings. All statistical tests were conducted with Stata 16.0 software. RESULTS A total of 68 studies of medium or high quality met the eligibility criteria, involving 30,328 nursing students. The rate of nursing students' willingness to participate in caring for older people was 49.0% (95% CI = 46-53%, I2 = 98.1%, P = 0.000). The results of meta-regression analysis showed that the following four predictor variables were significantly associated with nursing students' willingness to participate in caring for older people: experience of living with and caring for older people, nursing as their first choice and their year-level in education, respectively. Subgroup analyses for these four predictor variables revealed the following pooled estimates of nursing students' willingness: having experience of living with older people (0.54, 95% CI = 0.46-0.62) vs. no such experience (0.38, 95% CI = 0.30-0.46), having experience of caring for older people (0.55, 95% CI = 0.48-0.63) vs. no such experience (0.38, 95% CI = 0.30-0.46), nursing as their first choice (0.54, 95% CI = 0.51-0.58) vs. not their first choice (0.44, 95% CI = 0.35-0.53), being in the first year of nursing education (0.44, 95% CI = 0.34-0.55), second year (0.45, 95% CI = 0.34-0.56), and third and fourth year (0.62, 95% CI = 0.53-0.71). CONCLUSION The study found that approximately half of the nursing students confirmed their willingness to participate in caring for older people.The present study can serve as a resource for policymakers to increase the willingness of nursing students to participate in caring for older people.

Abstract
Background Globally, the fastest growth in the number of older people combined with chronic and age-related medical conditions experienced by the older adult placed great demand on geriatric care. Thus, nurses are required to be knowledgeable and have a desirable attitude toward geriatric nursing care. Therefore, this study aimed to assess knowledge and attitude toward geriatric nursing care and associated factors among nurses working at hospitals in Hawassa City, Ethiopia. Methods Hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from June 30 to July 30, 2022, among 365 nurses. The hospitals and study participants were selected by using purposive and simple random sampling methods, respectively. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were computed to generate descriptive results. Binary and multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify predictors at p-value <0.05. Results About 39.2% of nurses had good knowledge and 49.3% of the nurses showed a positive attitude toward geriatric nursing care. Nurses with BSc degree or above [AOR 2.5, 95% CI, (1.2-5.6)], having lived with older people [AOR 2.2, 95% CI, (1.4-3.6)], nurses with 6-10 years [AOR, 2.8, 95% CI, (1.4-5.57)] and >10 years of work experience [AOR 4.2, 95% CI, (1.6-10.8)] were more likely to have knowledge about geriatric nursing care. Having BSc degree or above [AOR 2.7, 95% C.I, (1.2-6)], 6-10 years [AOR 3, 95% CI, (1.48-6.3)], and >10 years [AOR 3.9, 95% CI, (1.4-10.99)] of work experience, living experience with older people [AOR 1.7, 95% C.I:1.05-2.7], knowledge about geriatric care [AOR 3, 95% CI,(1.85-4.92)], and having worked at adequate space [AOR 1.7, 95% CI: 1.009-2.8] increased odds of good attitude toward geriatric nursing care. Conclusion Less than half of nurses demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitude toward geriatric nursing care. Higher level of education, higher work experience, living with older people were significantly associated with knowledge and attitude toward geriatric nursing care. Additionally, working in an adequate space and having knowledge about geriatric care positively influenced attitude toward geriatric nursing care. Therefore, nursing schools and hospitals should conduct training and consider incorporating more content about geriatric care into nursing education to enhance nurses' knowledge and attitude.

Abstract
Interprofessional education (IPE) and research enhances learning, team-based communication, and cross-disciplinary collaborations, which can result in higher quality care for older adults. Despite the importance of IPE, it remains underutilized in higher education, demonstrating the need for extracurricular IPE opportunities. This study describes an interprofessional research project that brought together faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students from several health and social science disciplines to design and deliver a 15-week healthy aging program for older adults living in the urban Circumpolar North. Five faculty and one graduate research assistant led the project while eight students team-taught weekly, 1-hour sessions in the community focusing on healthy lifestyles within a framework of Persuasive Hope Theory. This paper describes the project, the student training procedures, and reports the results of the student satisfaction survey regarding their involvement with the research. Using a student self-assessment survey, students report gains in thinking like a scientist, increased confidence conducting research tasks, benefits from teamwork, and greater consideration of the needs of older adults in their field of study. Despite a small sample size, this study also suggests that students may be more likely to consider a career working with older adults if given hands-on experiences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing students are graduating ill-prepared to assess and manage pain in older adults. To address this gap, we developed an e-learning module on the topic. AIM To examine nursing students' perceptions on a pain management e-learning module focused on older adults. METHODS Utilizing an exploratory quantitative design, we assessed nursing students' perceptions of the e-learning module. We used a feedback survey (four 5-point, Likert-type items) and one open-ended question to assess students' perceptions. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize students' perceptions and demographic characteristics. Responses to the open-ended question were content analyzed. RESULTS A total of 181 of 249 students completed the module, of whom two-thirds were female. Students perceived that the module enhanced their knowledge, confidence, and perception in working with older people. Students also found the method of instruction interactive and enjoyable. CONCLUSIONS The e-learning module on pain management was viewed by nursing students to be helpful and its interactive method of learning improved their knowledge, confidence, and perceptions of working with older adults in pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing students' experiences during clinical training in aged care placements is a well-studied topic. However, there is less research on the connection between nursing students' prior experiences as assistants in nursing (AIN) and their perception of aged care nursing. AIM The aim of this study was to identify and synthesize undergraduate nursing students' experiences as working as AIN in aged care settings. METHOD A systematic review was carried out by searching the CINAHL, Scopus, Medline and Medic databases, supplemented by manual searches. The searches focused on peer-reviewed scientific empirical research articles published in English, with a 10-year date limitation. The data were analysed by the qualitative content method. RESULTS The review identified 11 articles, which showed that nursing students' prior work experience shifts their perceptions of older adults' care. The findings were organized under four major themes. Through their employment as AIN, (1) nursing students' ability to reflect and develop skills needed in clinical work strengthened, (2) they became aware of the independent role of the nurse, (3) they feel part of the workplace community and (4) they recognized their feelings and views about aged care as a career. CONCLUSION Students' work experience in aged care helps them to observe aged care settings as a unique set up and nursing comprehensively from the perspective of an older adult's care needs and they can observe the dynamics of a workplace community. They can see many positive features in working in aged care and assess their experience with positive descriptions.

Abstract
AIM To explore the attitudes and experiences of allied health students working with older adults on residential aged care placements. METHOD A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies of any design describing allied health student experience of residential aged care placements. Online databases searched to identify potentially relevant documents included Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL Complete (EBSCOhost) and Health and Medicine (ProQuest). Studies were excluded if residential aged care facilities or allied health professional students could not be extracted from the data. No restrictions were applied to methodological design, language, geographical location or year of publication. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess methodological quality. Extracted studies were analysed to identify the study design, participant and placement characteristics, study methodology and student experience measures. Data from the included studies were analysed thematically using meta-synthesis. RESULTS Six studies (total number of participants, n = 308) met inclusion criteria, with four papers scoring a 5/5 on the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Studies included undergraduate and master's students from physiotherapy (n = 3), speech language pathology (n = 2), dietetics (n = 1) and audiology (n = 1). Placement length varied from two to 15 h, between one and six residential aged care visits. Three themes were identified; (1) Opportunity to improve skills and gain confidence, (2) Development of empathy and shift in attitudes towards older adults and (3) Recognised challenges associated with older adults and residential aged care settings. CONCLUSION While the size of the evidence-base is limited, the studies were largely consistent in demonstrating an increase in positive attitudes towards older adults following residential aged care placements. Future research, innovations and planning around workforce size, preparation and motivation must be prioritised to ensure older adults receive the care they need and deserve.

Abstract
The demanding and challenging nature of care for geriatric patients requires appropriate preparation of health care professionals. However, the willingness of nursing students to work in geriatric nursing care is mostly at a low level. The EAging_C project has been developed to investigate the relationship between nursing teachers' and students' attitudes towards older people and its impact on career decisions regarding working in a geriatric setting. This study uses an explanatory sequential mixed-method. The study has been conducted in a Polish academic setting in teams of geriatric nursing practical training teachers and their students. Quantitative and qualitative data have been collected in three stages. Kogan's Attitudes Towards Older People questionnaire has been used to collect quantitative data among teachers and students. By developing two questionnaires for the semi-structured interviews (one for students and one for teachers) qualitative data was collected that deepened the quantitative data collected. The investigation conducted in this project allows us to provide an insight into the issue of the unwillingness to work in a geriatric setting by nursing graduates. Based on the identified variables that are crucial to promoting work with older people, further research can be carried out based on testing the intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In the United States, the older adult population is growing faster than the geriatrics-trained healthcare workforce. The primary objective of this study was to determine the top factors that increase or decrease pharmacy student interest in seeking a career in geriatrics. METHODS A 23-item survey was disseminated to 611 first- through fourth-year pharmacy students. Participants were recruited from two public schools of pharmacy in the United States from February through September 2022. Surveys were administered during class or distributed via email and websites for required courses. Participation was voluntary, and responses were anonymous. Descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, Fisher's exact test, and analysis of variance were used for analysis. RESULTS A total of 210 responses were received. Respondents were evenly split between somewhat or extremely interested and somewhat or extremely disinterested in geriatrics. Among those interested, the top factors driving interest were past positive experiences with older adults, interest in deprescribing, and perceived need for geriatrics-trained providers. Among those not interested, the top three factors discouraging interest were emotional impact of death and end-of-life care, disinterest in geriatric syndromes, and perception of inadequate exposure to geriatrics within the curriculum. CONCLUSIONS In order to ensure an adequately trained geriatrics workforce for the aging population, it is crucial to intensify efforts to encourage health profession students to pursue careers in geriatric care. Creating opportunities to increase interest and addressing factors that discourage interest may augment the pipeline of pharmacy students wishing to seek a career specializing in older adult care.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the correlation between spirituality and attitudes toward older adults among nursing students. METHODS The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. This study was conducted with nursing students in the nursing department of a university in Eastern Turkey. The study was completed with 366 nursing students. An information form, the Spirituality Scale, and Kogan's Attitudes toward Old People Scale were used. RESULTS The mean score of the Spirituality Scale was 104.18 ± 18.79, and the mean score of the Kogan's Attitudes toward Old People Scale was 99.11 ± 13.57. There was a small but significant correlation between spirituality and attitudes toward older adults (r = 0.342, p < 0.01). Moreover, the results indicated that spirituality is positive and significantly predicted attitudes toward older adults (β = 0.342, t = 19.495, p < 0.01) and explained 11.7% of the variance in attitudes toward older adults. CONCLUSIONS A small but significant correlation was found between spirituality and attitudes toward older adults. Further study on the causal relationship between spirituality and attitudes toward older adults among nursing students is necessary.

Abstract
Nursing students, as the future healthcare workforce, hold immense potential in providing quality care to older adults and becoming advocates for promoting aging and public health, thus contributing significantly to addressing the multifaceted challenges of our aging society. Nurses' knowledge and attitudes about aging affect health care quality. Negative and unattractive representations of the social problems associated with aging contaminate nursing students' attitudes. Nursing schools are challenged to develop new curricula to prepare future nurses for the inherent complexity of an aging society. This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students toward older adults and identify the variables that can influence these attitudes. Quantitative research was carried out through the application of an online survey using a cross-sectional descriptive research design. A total of 182 nursing students completed the online survey. Progression in the nursing course was statistically significant; the more students advanced, the more positive attitudes and knowledge they revealed about aging; 39% of students have daily contact with their grandparents; however, only 14.8% would like to work with older adults. Multiple linear regression revealed that the most important factor for positive attitudes and knowledge about aging was regular contact with grandparents, followed by progression in the nursing course. The students' age was not a significant factor in improving attitudes or expanding knowledge regarding older adults. In a multidimensional logic, the deepening of knowledge about aging and the socialization of students with older adults are central factors that should reinforce curricula in nursing education.

Abstract
AIM To describe the meaning of caring for older persons based on the experiences of nursing students in Greece. BACKGROUND The present study is conducted based on a caring science perspective derived from a holistic viewpoint of human beings, aiming to support the well-being of older persons. In Greece, informal caregivers play an important role in caring for older people; however, as the population ages, the need for registered nurses specialising in caring for older people is also increasing. Previous research in other countries has reported a relative lack of interest in this field, which is a threat to the quality of care. To ensure an adequate number of new-generation nurses caring for older people, nursing students' perceptions of the phenomenon of caring for older persons should be well understood and explored in a context where the number of long-term care beds and residential care facilities are low and where informal caregiving is common. DESIGN Based on Descriptive Phenomenology, in line with the Reflective Lifeworld Research (RLR) approach. METHODS A total of 12 nursing students at a university in Greece underwent in-depth lifeworld interviews online during June and July 2021 and March 2022; Interviews were transcribed verbatim and were analysed according to the principles of RLR that approaches the phenomena with openness and constant reflection. The participants were students in their fourth or fifth year of nursing education; they had previous experience in older person care and were not acquainted with the authors. RESULTS The results show the essential structure of the meaning of caring for older persons, where otherness consists of intertwined demanding and rewarding elements. The essence is further conveyed by three constituents: otherness of the older person: witnessing someone's vulnerability; trustful caring: struggling with normative structures; and closeness and distance: balancing between familiarity and professionalism. CONCLUSION To ensure quality of care for older persons in the future, an understanding of how nursing students describe their experiences of caring for older persons during education is important. Balancing between familiarity and professionalism highlights the need for further reflection on professionalism and dignity and identifying the norms and values helps to highlight particularities of the context and national healthcare system. Curricula focusing on cultivating students' preunderstanding, regarding caring for older persons are required to promote a higher quality of care in the future. Caring science can contribute to a focus on a holistic perspective in caring for older people. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT There is an ever-increasing need for educated nurses in the field of caring for older people. With the lack of interest in this field of nursing, the overall quality of care is impacted. This study describes the meaning of caring for older persons based on the experiences of nursing students in the Greek health care system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With a rapidly growing population of older adults in the U.S., nurses are needed to provide quality gerontological nursing care. However, few nursing students plan to specialize in gerontological nursing and many relate their lack of interest in gerontological nursing to negative pre-existing attitudes toward older adults. PURPOSE An integrative review was conducted to examine factors associated with positive attitudes toward older adults in baccalaureate nursing students. METHODS A systematic database search was performed to identify eligible articles published between January 2012 and February 2022. Data were extracted, displayed in matrix format, and synthesized into themes. RESULTS Two overarching themes were identified as having a positive impact on students' attitudes toward older adults: past rewarding experiences with older adults and gerontology-focused teaching strategies, particularly service-learning projects and simulation. CONCLUSION Nurse educators can improve students' attitudes toward older adults by incorporating service-learning and simulation activities into nursing curriculum.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nursing students should acquire competence in promoting self-care in older adults with chronic multimorbidity, but opportunities for clinical practice are limited. The implementation of a home visiting programme to community-dwelling older adults with chronic multimorbidity could contribute to nursing students' acquisition of this competence. OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to understand the experience of nursing students participating in a home visiting programme to community-dwelling older adults with chronic multimorbidity. DESIGN Qualitative study based on Gadamer's hermeneutic phenomenology. METHOD Twenty-two in-depth interviews were conducted with nursing students participating in a home visiting programme. Data were recorded, transcribed and analysed following the procedure developed by Fleming. RESULTS Three main themes were extracted in the data analysis process: (1) 'living the theory. Experience as a catalyst for learning', (2) 'the home visiting programme as a tool for promoting competence in caring for older adults', and (3) 'when learning sparks interest in working with older adults'. CONCLUSION The home visiting programme to community-dwelling older adults has an important impact on the personal and professional development of nursing students. The experience of the home visiting programme leads to deep learning that sparks interest in caring for older adults. The implementation of a home visiting programme could be a beneficial strategy for the acquisition of competence to promote health and self-care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to summarise and update existing knowledge about ageism among nursing students through the following research question: what is the perception and attitudes of ageism among student nurses? DESIGN A systematic review of longitudinal and cross-sectional studies of ageism in nursing students was carried out. DATA SOURCES The literature search was conducted in the scientific databases Pubmed and Scopus in February 2021. REVIEW METHODS After the screening process, 22 studies meeting the selection criteria were selected; 8 more were identified after manually searching the selected paper' reference lists. A total of 30 studies were included in the review. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists for Analytical Cross-Sectional studies and for Cohort Studies were used to appraise the articles' quality. RESULTS There was large variability in the manifestation of ageism among student nurses, as well as in the instruments used for assessment. Most of the articles analysed attitudes towards old age, the majority of which were positive. Being a female student, being on the final year of study and having regular contact or cohabitation with an older adult were three of the main determinants in the expression of positive attitudes towards the elderly. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that student nurses generally have positive attitudes towards old age, although ageist beliefs and discriminatory behaviours were identified and should be studied in greater depth. Training programs for future care professionals have a responsibility to educate from a non-stereotypical perspective based on current societal needs.

Abstract
Nursing students rate geriatric nursing poorly in career preferences, but aging populations mean more older people require access to health care. Negative attitudes held by nursing students can lead to ageism affecting the quality of care provided. The purpose of this scoping review is to summarize research findings in the published literature relating to factors associated with nursing students' attitudes toward older people, and the tools used to measure these attitudes. The Joanna Briggs Institute guide for conducting a scoping review was used. Eleven databases and search engines were searched for international peer reviewed research articles published in English between January 2000 and February 2021. Sixteen articles were included in the review. This review highlights areas for affirmative action to improve undergraduate nursing students' attitudes toward older people to prepare them to work effectively in future health care systems. Positive attitudes were associated with: senior years of study; professional values (caring, professionalism, trust); education regarding care of older adults; knowledge about aging; contact with older family members; comfort communicating with older people; and willingness to work with older people following graduation. It also identified the need for a current, nursing-specific measure of attitudes toward older people.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine whether e-learning activities on cognitive impairment (CI), continence and mobility (CM) and understanding and communication (UC) improve student nurses' knowledge and attitudes in the care of older adults. METHODS A quasi-experimental single group pre-post-test design was used. We included 299 undergraduate nursing students for the CI module, 304 for the CM module, and 313 for the UC module. We administered knowledge quizzes, Likert scales, and a feedback survey to measure student nurses' knowledge, ageist beliefs, and feedback on the modules respectively. RESULTS Participants demonstrated significantly more knowledge and reduced ageist attitudes following the e-learning activities. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that e-learning activities on cognitive impairment, continence and mobility, and understanding and communication improve knowledge and reduce ageist attitudes among nursing students.

Abstract
This study examined the knowledge and perceptions of speech-language pathology students working with older adults before and after their participation in a feeding training program. A secondary objective evaluated the feeding training program in terms of improving students' knowledge and skills. A repeated measures design was used to assess changes in perceptions and knowledge over time of students participating in a feeding training program assisting older adults at a skilled nursing facility. Twenty-four students in the communication sciences and disorders department from a university were recruited. Data were collected on the perceptions of working with older adults, knowledge of feeding and swallowing, and the evaluation of the program. Participants reported feeling less fearful of assisting older adults with feeding issues and appeared to acquire a higher level of knowledge in certain areas post-training. Analysis of the evaluation forms revealed that students were positive about their experience. The findings provide additional support that perceptions become more favorable following early exposure to older adults through participation in service-learning experiences. This study supplements the literature about the knowledge and perceptions of speech-language pathology students working with older adults. This information may be used to improve the quality of care for older adults in various settings.

Abstract
This paper presents a study of the interaction between healthcare providers (HCPs) and older patients and their caregivers. The paper first presents results from a rapid review and narrative synthesis using PubMed and Google Scholar of HCP/patient/caregiver interactions involving older patients; these results then informed the design of a survey administered to HCPs and caregivers using a range of scenarios and their ratings of appropriateness of different responses, to explore where expectations align or differ between HCPs and caregivers. In analyzing ratings, the research found HCPs and caregivers generally approach the older adult encounter with similar expectations, but differences for specific situations are informative. HCPs appear to better recognize when there is a need to show empathy, as when a patient is frustrated or anxious. HCPs, overall, offer more calming responses, especially in embarrassing, upsetting, or worrying situations. For older patients of advanced age, HCPs value engagement with patients more than caregivers, but HCPs are more aligned with caregivers in their ratings of how to engage caregivers. Compared to caregivers, HCPs focus more on simplifying the description of treatment rather than using thorough explanations when a patient expresses hesitancy or avoidance. The results from this work suggest that having a fuller understanding of the different participants’ expectations may improve communication and identify potential pitfalls. A better understanding may also lead to changes in how students in the healthcare fields are trained; having better insight into this relationship will prepare them for interacting with older patients while addressing the needs of caregivers.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: There is a growing interest in the measurement of attitudes towards older people in healthcare professionals, as there is a need to implement interventions to improve ageist attitudes. A one group pretest–posttest study was carried out to explore the change in nursing student attitudes towards the elderly during their university careers. Materials and Method: A total of 97 nursing students were enrolled. Attitudes were analyzed using Kogan’s Attitudes Toward Old People Scale. Results: The attitude was positive from the beginning of the study, with a score of 110.06 (12.92). No differences were observed after completing the subject “Care of the elderly” (106.21 (10.77)), though a significant increase was recorded after the completion of clinical placement (142.88 (12.64)), with a large effect size (η2p = 0.754). The score of the positive items was significantly increased, but not that of the negative items, as ageist attitude was not reduced. Conclusion: The current curricular design, that includes taking the theoretical course before clinical placement in the geriatric area, increases positive attitudes in nursing students but does not reduce ageist attitudes.

Abstract
Background Caring for older adults is among the most challenging issue of public health and social care systems in modern societies. By enhancing the nursing curriculum, nursing students will be qualified to provide gerontology care, and they will be acknowledging and working to eliminate ageism from the health care system. Purpose This study explores nurses’ and nursing students’ knowledge and attitudes in caring for older adults and addresses the factors contributing to nurses’ perspectives. It also examines the nursing curriculum's contributions to nurses’ knowledge and attitudes and provides suggestions aimed at reconfiguring the nursing curriculum for comprehensive gerontology nursing care. Methods A mixed-method research design was utilized, and quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 90 nurses and nursing students through an online questionnaire. Data were analyzed via SPSS and NVivo 12 software programs. Results The results revealed that most nurses possess neutral attitudes toward caring for older patients, and their knowledge ranged from average to above-average levels. Statistical analysis revealed no statistically significant difference between gender and nurses’ attitudes or between gender and knowledge. Similarly, there was no statistically significant difference between work status and nurses’ attitudes. Results showed a statistically significant positive correlation between nurses’ attitudes and knowledge level. This study demonstrated the positive impact of the Canadian nursing curriculum on nurses’ knowledge and attitudes. Conclusion The current study recommends providing gerontology nursing courses as a mandatory separate course in nursing education to enhance nursing students’ knowledge and skills for high-quality gerontology nursing care.

Abstract
Aim Attitudes toward older persons could affect services that are provided to them and change the value of the care they receive. The attitude of nursing students toward older persons is very important as it will affect their care of older patients in future. However, in China, the attitude of higher vocational nursing students toward older persons has not been widely studied. The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and factors toward older people among nursing students in higher vocational colleges in Heilongjiang Province. Design A cross‐sectional study. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted using cluster sampling. A total of 1106 nursing students from two higher vocational colleges in Heilongjiang Province participated. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing nursing students’ attitudes toward older people. Conclusion This study showed that the vocational college nursing students have a positive attitude towardolder persons. However, the proportion of respondents taking care of older persons as their first choice in their future career needs to be increased. Advanced vocational colleges should pay attention to the attitudes of nursing students toward older persons, and strengthen the education of career development planning, which has practical significance in meeting the diversified health needs of older persons and ensuring healthy aging.

Abstract
Introduction It is estimated that mores nurses are needed in the future, nursing students’ career preferences are important to contribute the shortage of nursing manpower in Macao. Little is known regarding the preferences for nursing students’ career preferences and related factors among nursing students. Objective To explore and investigate the career preferences and related factors among nursing students in Macao. Methods A descriptive, cross-sectional survey study design was adopted to assess career preferences and related factors among nursing students in Macao. Results In total, 217 nursing students completed surveys. The most favorite career preferences among nursing students were community health nursing, paediatric nursing, medical surgical nursing, and obstetric & gynecological nursing; while the least career preferences among nursing students were oncology and hospice nursing, mental health nursing, and ER nursing. Factors were related to “gender”, “education”, and “nursing is my first study preference” among Macao nursing students for career preferences. Conclusion The senior nursing students prefer working in community health nursing and the junior and female nursing students prefer working in pediatric nursing and obstetric and gynecological nursing. The more understandings of nursing students’ career preferences, the better nursing curriculum design and implication to promote nursing students’ intention for working in the least career preferences work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Internationally there are too few suitably skilled registered nurses to meet the demands for dementia care. Research has established low preferences in undergraduate nursing students for working with older people. However, there is limited research on preferences for dementia care. Understanding career preferences is one component of ensuring future workforce capacity. OBJECTIVE To assess student nurses' preferences during undergraduate training in relation to working with people with dementia. METHODS Data from a longitudinal survey collected at two UK universities were analysed (n = 488). Measures included career preferences, demographics, participation in a dementia educational intervention, and measures of attitude, knowledge, and empathy to dementia. Open text responses were also included to explore the students' reasons for their preferences. RESULTS The preference for working with older people and people with dementia was low and decreased during training. A linear regression analysis supports a strong relationship of preferences with attitudes to dementia. Content analysis of students' reasons for their preferences found that perceived difficulty and lack of confidence contributes to the negative evaluation of working with people with dementia. CONCLUSION Undergraduate nursing education needs to continue to review its contribution to preparing the dementia workforce and act to support positive attitudes to working with people with dementia across nursing specialties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Addressing nursing students' lack of interest in providing care for the aged population is a global challenge for nursing educators. Despite global interest in student nurses' readiness for older people care, almost all the literature has been identified from single countries, predominantly with high income per capita. At present, no study has been conducted to provide evidence-based data related to this topic from a multi-country perspective. OBJECTIVE The study's purpose was to examine the willingness to work with older persons and associated factors among student nurses from nine countries (or regions). DESIGN This study utilized a correlational and cross-sectional design. SETTINGS This was a multi-country survey study conducted in China, Chile, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Greece, the State of Palestine (henceforth Palestine), the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. PARTICIPANTS 2250 baccalaureate nursing students were recruited from 10 universities in this study. METHODS The survey that was used to collect data comprised four parts: socio-demographic data, attitude toward aging, older person care perception, and willingness to work with such group. RESULTS Respondents in five regions (including Mainland China, Greece, Hong Kong, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia) stated that older persons were the least favored group for future career choices. In comparison with mainland China, respondents in Chile, India, and the Philippines were significantly more likely to be willing to care for older patients, but those in Egypt and Greece indicated a lower tendency to choose this option. Favorable attitudes toward aging and older person care perception were significantly associated with having the willingness to provide care to gerontologic patients in the future. CONCLUSIONS Although attitudes toward aging and older person care perception have long been confirmed as important factors that are linked with willingness in caring for older people, this study adds that location is a more influential factor. Additional research in other countries is needed to advance the knowledge in this important area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aimed to examine the changes of knowledge, attitude and working intention in nursing students after an undergraduate geriatric nursing education. DESIGN A systematic review of the literature. DATA SOURCES Five databases which included CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for this literature review from January 2010 to October 2020. REVIEW METHODS The review was registered in PROSPERO registry with registration number CRD42020215703. The review examined undergraduate nursing education programs in terms of knowledge, attitude and working intention towards geriatric care among undergraduate nursing students as outcomes. We used JBI critical appraisal tools and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool to evaluate and assess the quality of the retrieved research papers. RESULTS The search yielded 19 studies included in the final review, 14 of which were quantitative studies and five were qualitative studies. Four types of education programs were identified. These were type 1, a four-year undergraduate gerontology program consisting of geriatric theory and geriatric care clinical placement; type 2, stand-alone geriatric subject and geriatric clinical placement program; type 3, integrated geriatric subject and geriatric clinical placement program; type 4, solely geriatric clinical placement program. The review found that the type 2 program demonstrated the best educational outcomes in undergraduate students. CONCLUSIONS This review provided the most recent literature evidence pertaining to undergraduate geriatric education program and its educational outcomes. Future research should focus on the evaluating the content of each type of geriatric education program to inform the development of undergraduate geriatric nursing education.

Abstract
Background The older adult population in Canada is increasing, and many will require
care within an acute geriatric unit (AGU) or long-term care facility (LTCF).
However, the nursing workforce is not growing at the same pace as the
population is aging. New graduate nurses may be able to fill this gap;
therefore, it is important to understand their intentions of working in
gerontological care settings (i.e., AGU or LTCF). Aim To examine if nursing education and personal attitudes toward older adults
influence newly registered nurses’(RNs) intentions to work in a
gerontological care setting. Method Nurses (n= 1,103) who registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario for
the first time in 2018 were invited to complete a questionnaire. Results The majority of participants (n = 181) reported a positive attitude toward
older adults. However, only 14% reported an intention to work in a
gerontological care setting. Participants who completed multiple geriatric
focused clinical placements were more likely to report an intention to work
in these settings. Conclusion This study provides some information regarding the attitudes and intentions
of newly RNs toward a career in gerontological care settings. Further
research is needed to understand nurses’ intentions regarding working in
AGUs or LTCFs.

Abstract
Background Nurses’ knowledge and attitude regarding the care of older people can have an impact on patient outcomes such as reduced length of hospital stays, reduced readmission rates, and increased patient and family satisfaction. However, evidence is scarce in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and associated factors towards the care of older people among nurses working at public hospitals in West Shoa Zone, Ethiopia. Methods Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted from April1–30, 2021 among 423 nurses who were working in adult care units. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The sample was selected using simple random sampling. The logistic regression analysis model was fitted and the Adjusted Odds Ratio at 95% confidence interval was used. P-values less than or equal to 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results A total of 411 nurses participated in the study with a 97.16% response rate. The mean age of the participants was 29.11 (SD ± 3.84) years. The study showed that 37.2% (95% CI: 33, 42%) of the participants had good knowledge and 45.7% (95% CI: 40.9, 50.6%) had a favorable attitude toward the care of older people. The significantly associated factors positively affected both the knowledge and the attitude of nurses. Age greater than 30 years (AOR:2.37, 95% CI: 1.18, 4.75), experience greater than 5 years (3.00: 1.21, 7.41), being BSc degree holder and above (3.57: 1.40, 9.09), lived with older people (2.14: 1.34, 3.42), and nurses working in adult intensive care unit (3.03: 1.03, 8.91) were significantly associated with knowledge. Likewise, being female (2.04: 1.33, 3.12), being BSc degree holder and above (2.77: 1.35, 5.65), lived with older people (1.59: 1.03, 2.44), and care for older people (1.63: 1.06, 2.53) were significantly associated with attitude. Conclusion In this study, less than half of the nurses had good knowledge and a favorable attitude towards the care of older people. Continuous professional development regarding the care of older people is important to enhance nurses’ knowledge and attitude.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the population of older adults is estimated to double by 2050, the growing demand for nurses to provide care to older adults will grow. Internationally, attitudes among nursing students towards caring for older adults range from negative to slightly positive. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine undergraduate nursing students' thoughts, feelings and perspectives towards older adults residing in nursing homes prior to their clinical experience. METHODS/RESULTS Students enrolled in a clinical component of a course within a baccalaureate nursing programme were prompted to write a one-page reflection on their thoughts and feelings toward caring for older adults in a nursing home. Artefacts from 72 undergraduate students' were examined, and data saturation was obtained at 20 cases. Utilizing a one-time inquiry approach, we identified eight categories that emerged from the data: Range of emotions when anticipating clinical, building rewarding relationships with older adults, preparing for my nursing career, student pre-existing attitudes, providing the best care possible, relationships with grandparents, experience(s) in nursing homes and older adults 'have so much to teach us'. Two themes encompassed all the others: '[Older adults] have so much to teach us' and 'providing the best care possible'. A strong majority of students expressed enthusiasm for their upcoming clinical in a nursing home. CONCLUSION Students' attitudes were significantly more positive than those in prior studies. The results offer essential insight for nursing faculty who teach and design clinical experiences for undergraduate nursing students in nursing home facilities. Faculty should take account of their students' prior experiences, thoughts, and feelings to prepare them appropriately to care for older adults in their future nursing careers. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Increasing staffing and retention of staff in nursing homes facilities remains a priority for stakeholders in long-term care of older adults. Nursing educators must continuously assess students' knowledge and attitudes assists to identify knowledge gaps and misconceptions, which must be addressed to teach student nurses how to provide high-quality, effective and culturally sensitive care to older adults. As students become more competent in caring for older adults, their desire to pursue a nursing career in gerontology care may increase. Early experiences of student nurses with older adults will prepare nursing students for their future career. Understanding students' thoughts and feelings will assist faculty in tailoring clinical orientation, designing clinical experiences and post-conference debriefings that address students' concerns. This research contributes to the knowledge of perceptions of nursing students and will assist to design educational experiences. Nursing educators who understand nursing students' attitudes toward caring for older persons can facilitate therapeutic interactions between nursing students and older adults. Designing experiences with these research results in mind may facilitate the development of positive attitudes towards caring for older adults.

Abstract
Whereas prior work has examined the role of nursing courses in improving empathic skills and reducing dehumanization of older adults, little research has explored how perspective taking and perceptions of humanness of older adults acquired through nursing curricula predict attitudes toward this age group. Nursing students (N = 43) completed surveys at the beginning (Time 1) and end of gerontological coursework (Time 2). Perspective taking and perceived human nature and human uniqueness of older adults increased from Time 1 to Time 2. Perceived human nature of older adults was associated with more positive attitudes at the end of the semester, compared to the beginning. Improved perceptions of the human nature of older adults also predicted lower ageism at the end of the semester. Strategies for improving perspective taking and perceptions of humanness of older adults in nursing courses are discussed.

Abstract
Background A renewed interest in nursing homes as clinical placement settings for nursing students has been prompted by the growing healthcare needs of an ageing population. However, if future nurses are to be enthusiastic about working in this healthcare context, it is essential that higher education institutions that educate nurses and nursing homes that provide placement experiences to students do so with a supportive, positive, and enriched approach. Methods To explore first-year nursing students’ placement experience in nursing homes, we conducted an exploratory qualitative study in three city-based nursing homes in western Norway. Thirteen first-year nursing students participated in the study. Three focus group interviews were conducted to explore the students’ placement experiences. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings were reported using the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). Results The analysis describes five themes relating to first-year students’ placement experience in nursing homes; (1) variations in utility of pre-placement orientation and welcome at placement site; (2) a challenging learning environment; (3) spending considerable placement time with non-registered nurses; (4) considerable variability in supervision practices; and (5) a vulnerable and demanding student role. Conclusions The research provides insight into the contextual characteristics encountered by first-year students that influence the quality of their placement experiences. Consequently, these characteristics impede access to important role models who lend support to a student’s growth and professional development, preventing full utilisation of the learning potential offered in nursing homes. Hence, we propose that targeted efforts are warranted to foster positive placement experiences and enhance students’ clinical education in nursing homes. Abstract
BACKGROUND The phenomenon of an ageing population is being experienced globally requiring the ongoing provision of residential care services. A large number of registered nurses work in these settings; however, many challenges exist in their recruitment and retention. OBJECTIVES To explore professional identities and emerging discourses of registered nurses working in older person residential care settings. METHODS This study employed a discursive-based research methodology with a central focus on the role language, and discourses play in identity construction. Fourteen in-depth narrative interviews were completed with registered nurses in residential care settings in the Republic of Ireland. Thematic analysis was underpinned by a critical discursive psychology framework. RESULTS Four key identities and related discourses emerged: 'skilled professional identity', 'person-centred identity', 'subordinate identity' and 'product of healthcare reform identity'. Discourses presented contrasting professional identities held by nurses in residential care settings; on the one hand, they employed positive professional and person-centred discourses, while on the other hand, tensions associated with healthcare reform and a subordinate identity exist. CONCLUSIONS This study presents unique insights into how registered nurses in residential care construct their professional identity and in doing so, enhances opportunities to promote recruitment and marketing in this setting. Equally, the challenges and opportunities of healthcare reform require sensitive management so that the professional identity of nurses working in residential care is enhanced and protected. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE How registered nurses working in residential care settings view their professional identity directly impacts on attitudes and behaviours and the subsequent delivery of care. Greater understanding and insight into how they construct their professional identity may enhance recruitment and retention initiatives. Study results also provide an opportunity for policymakers and service providers to create more positive working environments that promote professional identity development for this nursing group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The common practice of making fun of aging and older people demonstrates that ageism towards older people is socially acceptable. It is so accepted that even those of us who are aging or have moved into the 'third act' believe and fear the negative stereotypes that growing old is linked with physical and mental deterioration, dependence, and less social value. Ageism is evident in work places, family relationships, when older people purchase goods and services, in health and social institutions and extends throughout professions that work with older people. OBJECTIVES We explore how nurses-the largest group of healthcare professions- may be inadvertently perpetuating negative perceptions about older people in nursing practice, nursing education, and through common misconceptions about what gerontological nursing means. METHODS This is discussion paper using the literature. RESULTS We suggest that nursing education is well situated to diminish negative perspectives of ageing by incorporating theories of life-course and harmonious aging into the holistic perspective of individuals that nursing is well known for. CONCLUSIONS Greater understanding about the diversity of ageing and the context that have influenced older persons could encourage nurses to treat them holistically with dignity, which would ultimately improve older people's experiences. Improving older persons' experiences is like paying it forward, as we all are ageing and if we are to have a different experience when we are old, it is necessary to diminish stereotypes about ageing, and work towards inclusion of older people in social and healthcare institutions. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE It is important for nurses, particularly those in nursing education, to support the incorporation of a life course and harmonious view of aging in which the social, political, and environmental context of individuals are viewed as part of the difference of ageing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increasing numbers of older people (age 65+) make it important to understand how to attract nurses to work with this population. METHODS A secondary analysis using qualitative descriptive methods was used to understand how student nurses' perceptions about older people may influence their desire to work with older people. RESULTS Student nurses perceive a generational divide between them and older people, regardless of practice settings. They believe working with older people is heavy work, and not high acuity, and although good to learn skills as a student, not a population they want to work with until they are close to retirement themselves. CONCLUSIONS It is important to enhance nursing education so that students understand the older generation, how to communicate with them and the prevalence of older people in healthcare settings, so that they are more likely to choose to work with older people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The stigma of working in aged care can discredit and devalue those working in gerontology. This overlooked workforce issue may underpin complex staffing challenges like chronic worker shortages and inadequate care delivery. Our review synthesizes the existing literature and introduces a conceptual framework based on linguistics to reconcile disparate conceptualizations and negative consequences of this stigma. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a systematic review and assessed peer-reviewed articles published from 1973 to 2019 across 5 databases. Fifty-nine articles were selected based on criteria grounded in stigma theory. RESULTS Only 10 articles explicitly used the term "stigma" when conceptualizing the stigma of working in aged care. An additional 49 articles conceptualized this stigma in terms of stigma processes (e.g., status loss). Findings from a deeper examination using a linguistic analysis revealed societal groups predominantly conceptualized stigma in 3 distinct ways based on (a) unfavorable character judgment of aged care workers, (b) lower value placed on aged care work, and (c) negative emotional reactions towards working in aged care. Last, stigma was associated with adverse psychological and job-related consequences. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS Reconceptualizing this workforce issue and recognizing it as a societal challenge will enable policymakers to design evidence-based interventions at industry and societal levels. We propose workforce challenges in the aged care sector such as attraction, retention, and well-being may lessen with interventions aimed at mitigating the stigma of working in aged care.

Abstract
Caring for older adults is viewed as a low prestigious profession and a less attractive career option for nursing students. Knowledge deficit is a major perceived barrier to reliving ageist attitudes and behaviors among nursing students. In the Middle East, there is limited evidence regarding ageism among nursing students. This study aimed to examine the association of nursing students' demographics and knowledge of aging with ageist attitudes and behaviors. A cross-sectional design was used to recruit a convenience sample of 290 undergraduate nursing students in Jordan. The majority of nursing students reported poor knowledge, held ageist attitudes, and expressed ageist behaviors. A significant difference was found between senior and junior nursing students in the level of knowledge about aging. Also, significant correlations were found among students' knowledge about aging and ageist attitudes and behaviors. Targeting knowledge deficit and ageist attitudes and behaviors among nursing students is crucial for optimal geriatric care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aging population has become a serious challenge for health care service and will lead to an increasing demand for nurses to work with older people. However, working with older people has always been an unpopular career choice among nursing students. This study aimed to further explore the willingness and associated factors of undergraduate nursing students to work with older people in China. METHODS A convenience sampling method was employed from May to July 2017 among undergraduate nursing students from a nursing school in Nantong China. Demographic data, the Chinese version of the Kogan's Old Person's Scale, the Chinese version of the Facts of Aging Quiz and the motivation questionnaire were used to collect data. A series of Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Spearman correlation test and Ordinal logistic regression analysis were applied to analyze the data. RESULTS Of the 853 students surveyed, 38.1 % were willing to work with older people after graduation. Expectancy, interest, attainment value, cost, prejudice, whether they like nursing profession and whether they participated in elderly-related activities were the most significant predictors of the students' willingness to work with older people. CONCLUSIONS Nursing students expressed a low level of willingness to work with older people upon graduation. Nursing educators have an important part in challenging students' stereotype of older people and inspire their career choice in caring for older people through both well-designed curriculum and elderly-related activities, and relevant education departments should actively optimize aged-related courses, strengthen professional ethics and gratitude education, and improve nursing students' sense of identity and mission in caring for older people, so as to improve their willingness to work with older people.

Abstract
AIMS The purpose of the study was to explore students' experiences from joint simulation training with qualified nurses that took place in students´ first-year placement at a nursing home. BACKGROUND Nursing students' clinical placement in nursing homes has been pictured as inadequate, boring and irrelevant. There is a need for innovative learning designs that include increased collaboration between the educational institution and clinical placement site to support student learning in practice. Simulation training is highlighted as a learning activity that enhances practical skills and reflection. DESIGN The study had a qualitative evaluation design to explore and capture students' experiences and provide an understanding of the impact of the joint simulation activity during placement. METHODS Three retrospective focus group interviews were conducted with a total of twenty nursing students. Written reflective notes from sixteen of the students were included in the study. The data were analysed by means of a thematic content analysis. COREQ reporting guidelines were used. RESULTS Four themes were identified as follows: (a) anxiety and arrangements, (b) realistic scenarios-real nurses, (c) debriefing and reflection and (d) the aftereffect of the simulation training for the clinical placement. CONCLUSIONS The joint simulation training gave the students an opportunity to actively participate in a complex clinical learning situation together with qualified nurses and within a safe environment. This learning activity provoked feelings and stress within the students. However, it also enriched the students' learning experience and strengthened the outcome of the clinical placement through an improved relationship between the students and qualified nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Creating collaborative learning activities between nursing homes and universities, such as joint simulation, can increase relevance and enhance learning and student satisfaction in their clinical placement. It can also promote nursing homes as interesting learning arena and future workplace for nursing students.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the willingness of nursing students in Hong Kong and Mainland China to care for the elderly and to identify the factors influencing their willingness. DESIGN A correlational and cross-sectional design. METHODS A four-part self-administered questionnaire was utilized to collect data from the undergraduate nursing students in Hong Kong and Mainland China. RESULTS The total sample consisted of 820 nursing students, with 481 students in Hong Kong and 339 students in Mainland China. The scores of willingness to care for older people of the two groups were similar (mean score 4.68 versus 4.44), and no significant difference was observed between the students in the two regions (p = .071). A very low proportion of the nursing students in Hong Kong (7.7%) and those in Mainland China (3.6%) ranked caring for older people as their first choice of work. No salient predictors of willingness to care for older people existed for the nursing students in Mainland China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Finding workers to care for older adults in healthcare settings has become a priority, and research identifying factors influencing a nursing student's intention to make geriatrics a career choice is needed. This calls for the development of a reliable measure of students' perceptions and attitudes. OBJECTIVES To determine the adaptability of Carolina Opinions on Care of Older Adults (COCOA) to assess nursing students' attitudes to older adults and their intentions to work with them in two countries. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. SETTINGS Nursing students enrolled in an introduction to gerontological nursing course in the United States and Israel. PARTICIPANTS A convenience sample of 231 undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing in the United States (N=122) and Israel (N=109). METHODS Students completed the COCOA instrument and basic demographics using an electronic platform. RESULTS Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) produced five factors explaining 59% of the variation, with the majority of the items (17, 71%) loading above 0.40 on subscales from the instrument's original structure. EFA led to the elimination of one subscale (Value of Older Adults) and the creation of a new subscale (Older versus Younger Adults) with three items. The reliability scores were good to acceptable for all subscales in both Israeli and American samples (α-Cronbach 0.80 to 0.60). Confirmatory FA supported the data's fit to the 21 items of the modified COCOA instrument (CMIN/DF=1.55, CFI=0.93, IFI=0.93, RMSEA=0.05). The analysis of model equivalence for American and Israeli samples revealed significant differences only on the Experience in Caring for Older Adults subscale. CONCLUSIONS The modified COCOA demonstrated good construct validity and reliability and can serve as estimation of nursing students' attitudes to older adults and their intention to make geriatrics a career choice. Future studies should further evaluate its predictive validity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Culture influences nurses' attitudes towards caring for older adults. Additionally, nursing students' perceptions and attitudes towards older adults affect their behavior, possibly their career choices and/or the quality of care provided to older adults after graduation. In the context of lower-middle-income countries with a faster growing older adults population compared to upper income countries, the improvement of the quality care, inclusive of nurses' attitudes towards older adults, is one of the strategies for strengthening nursing and midwifery in Africa. Furthermore, examining nurses and nursing students' attitudes towards older adults will answer the United Nations' call for more data to understand the needs and the status of older adults in Africa. METHODS This scoping review will be guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework. The search will be performed using Scopus, PubMed databases, Academic search complete, CINAHL with full text, Education source, Health source: Nursing/Academic Edition, with words related to the topic. The reviewers will also use Google Scholar and the reference lists of the relevant articles. Primary studies and grey literature addressing the research question will be included. The search process will include a first stage where two reviewers will perform the title screening and the removal of duplicates, followed by a parallel abstract screening according to eligibility criteria. The second stage will involve the reading of full articles and the exclusion of articles, in accordance with the eligibility criteria. Data will be collated by two reviewers independently and parallel, using a predetermined data extraction form. Discrepancies will involve a third reviewer. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, version 2018 will be used to assess the quality of the data of eligible articles. A narrative approach containing summary tables and graphs will facilitate synthesis. DISCUSSION The review will provide insight into nurses' and nursing students' attitudes towards older adults in African countries. The outcomes will guide future research, practice, and education in nursing.

Abstract
As the number of elderly citizens in general and the number of persons with dementia in particular rises, the importance of educating geriatric health care professionals increases. Recruitment is, however, impaired by negative stereotypes and insecurity. Previous research has shown that contact with the field of dementia care is important for students' motivation for choosing this career path. This paper presents an extracurricular psychomotor intervention program in which students through eight visits to elderly persons with dementia carry out an intervention involving direct individual contact. Eight psychomotor therapy students participated in follow-up focus group interviews. The purpose was to explore the motivational dynamics that make these experiences meaningful to students. Qualitative analysis of the students' self-assessed outcomes revealed three themes: The relational encounter, Discovering the person, and Making a difference. In combination these themes show important nuances to existing literature on student career dreams by pointing to the benefits of attending to the moment to moment changes in the care situation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to elicit graduating undergraduate nursing students' perceived value of the work environment in aged care. Applying a cross sectional design, an electronic questionnaire was sent to 625 graduating undergraduate nursing students from three schools of nursing in Jiangsu Province, China. A discrete choice experiment questionnaire with eight choice-set questions was performed. In total, 267 nursing students (42.7%) responded to the questionnaire. We found that nursing students valued excellent working conditions the highest (OR = 3.632 [2.846~4.635]), followed by adequate formal professional development activities (OR = 2.252 [1.907~2.660]), good/excellent safety management (OR = 2.214 [1.828~2.682])/ (OR = 2.202 [1.758~2.759]), and 10% higher earnings (OR = 1.615 [1.360~1.919]). Based on these findings, the study provided information to improve the recruitment of nursing students to work with older adults. Findings suggest that students may be 44.07~73.41% more likely to choose working with older people when valued job characteristics are present.

Abstract
Aims This integrative review aims to explore the willingness of nursing students to work in geriatric care over the past 10 years and to explore the factors influencing nursing students to work in geriatric care. Design An integrative review. Methods Studies investigating nursing students’ willingness in gerontological nursing work and related influencing factors published in English in Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL between 2010–2020 were included. Data collected in April 2020. Results Twenty‐four studies were analysed. Most studies presented a contradictory or negative attitude about the willingness of nursing students to engage in gerontological nursing work. In most studies that rank the intention to work in nursing fields, gerontological care received the lowest or a relatively low ranking. The main factors affecting work related to gerontological nursing include prior experience caring for older adults, attitudes towards geriatrics, anxiety about ageing, clinical practice environment and living experience with older family members.

Abstract
The need for nurses specialized in geriatrics continues to increase with the aging world population. However, nurses and nursing students mostly do not consider geriatric nursing as a possible career in nursing. Therefore, understanding the factors that influence such a career preference is crucial to encourage geriatric nursing. The current study is cross-sectional and aims to investigate nursing students' intention to work as a geriatric nurse with older adults and the factors influencing those intentions. A total of 688 nursing students enrolled in the second, third, and fourth-years of the Bachelor of Nursing program in two universities were recruited. Data were collected using a questionnaire form developed by the researchers and the Kogan Attitude toward Old People Scale. Results indicated correlations between the fourth year in the program, living with older adults, taking a separate course on geriatric health, experience in providing care for older adults, and evaluating geriatric nursing as a possible career in nursing (P < 0.05). Additionally, the study demonstrated that students avert from a career in geriatric nursing due to the lack of knowledge and skills and negative experiences during internships and practice. In conclusion, nursing programs should include courses designed to focus on gerontology to improve nurse students' willingness to work with older adults.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study examined the influence of Saudi nursing students' religiosity on their attitudes toward older people and on their perceptions of elderly care. A sample of 175 nursing students of a government university in Saudi Arabia was surveyed using the Kogan's Attitudes toward Older People Scale, the Perspectives on Caring for Older Adults Scale, and the Muslim Religious Index. The students reported they are religious, they have modest attitudes toward older people, and they have neutral perception about elderly care. Religiosity showed a positive influence on the students' attitudes toward older people and on their perceptions about elderly care.

Abstract
Having teachers who are knowledgeable and passionate about issues related to older people is crucial in enhancing nursing students' interest in older people nursing. However, whether such commitments and abilities are present among gerontological nurse teachers is unknown. This study therefore describes how undergraduate nursing students perceive their gerontological nurse teachers' abilities to facilitate students' interest in older people nursing. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study of undergraduate nursing students (N = 331) in Finland. The data were collected electronically using the Gerontological Nurse Teacher Scale (GeNTS). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The students agreed that their teachers are knowledgeable and interested in gerontological nursing (M = 3.62, SD = 0.92) and demonstrate leadership in gerontology (M = 3.50, SD = 1.04). However, they were uncertain about how their teachers address students concerns about aging, promote gerontology careers, and the teachers' abilities in developing gerontological nursing practical training. Gerontological nursing teachers should make deliberate effort to promote gerontology careers by highlighting the incentives and possibilities for career advancement in older people nursing. Further studies are needed to find out if nursing students' perception of their gerontological nurse teachers is a predictor of students' interest in older people nursing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Older persons and patients with frailty constitute an ever increasing proportion of hospital patients. Improving student attitudes towards both groups is important in preparing future doctors for this demographic shift. We aimed to investigate medical student attitudes towards older persons and frailty over an entire medical school cohort. METHODS All current Brighton and Sussex Medical School students were invited to complete an online questionnaire consisting: (i) the Australian Ageing Semantic Differential (AASD), (ii) the Medical Condition Regard Scale (MCRS) with regards to frailty, (iii) a qualitative question asking participants to record three words regarding both a person over 70 years and frailty. RESULTS 187 students participated (66% female, 25.2% response rate). Participants reported positive attitudes with mean scores of 73.45/114 on the AASD and 52.4/66 on the MCRS. The most positive attitudes towards both older persons and frailty were held by year 1 students, and most negative by year 3 and year 4 students for older persons and frailty, respectively. Examining AASD subgroups, students held negative attitudes towards the instrumentality (function) of older persons (mean score: 17.6/36) with significant variation across year groups (p < 0.05), with the most negative attitudes expressed in year 3. Word clouds of qualitative responses showed that medical students consider the two concepts differently with frailty attracting more negative associations. CONCLUSION Generally medical student attitudes were positive towards older persons and frailty. However, these declined when focusing on the functionality, with word cloud analysis of attitudes revealing a dichotomy between the quantitative and qualitative data surrounding frailty.
