Magnetic biochar as a revolutionizing approach for diverse dye pollutants elimination: A comprehensive review

The term "biomass" encompasses all substances found in the natural world that were once alive or derived from living organisms or their byproducts. These substances consist of organic molecules containing hydrogen, typically oxygen, frequently nitrogen, and small amounts of heavy, alkaline earth and alkali metals. Magnetic biochar refers to a type of material derived from biomass that has been magnetized typically by adding magnetic components such as magnetic iron oxides to display magnetic properties. These materials are extensively applicable in widespread areas like environmental remediation and catalysis. The magnetic properties of these compounds made them ideal for practical applications through their easy separation from a reaction mixture or environmental sample by applying a magnetic field. With the evolving global strategy focused on protecting the planet and moving towards a circular, cost-effective economy, natural compounds, and biomass have become particularly important in the field of biochemistry. The current research explores a comparative analysis of the versatility and potential of biomass for eliminating dyes as a sustainable, economical, easy, compatible, and biodegradable method. The elimination study focused on the removal of various dyes as pollutants. Various operational parameters which influenced the dye removal process were also discussed. Furthermore, the research explained, in detail, adsorption kinetic models, types of isotherms, and desorption properties of magnetic biochar adsorbents. This comprehensive review offers an advanced framework for the effective use of magnetic biochar, removing dyes from textile wastewater.

Pristine wild sugarcane (Saccharum spontaneum) as a biosorbent for removal of methylene blue from wastewater: isotherm, kinetics and regeneration studies

Saccharum spontaneum, popularly known as Kashful (KF) is a seasonal perennial grass with thin culms, mostly an abundantly growing shrub during the autumn season in southern Asia. It is used as no-cost scavenger to convincingly arrest methylene blue, a recalcitrant dye from colored effluent. FTIR, FESEM-EDX, and BET surface area characterize the material well whereas the surface activity was evaluated from zero-point charge (pHZPC = 6.720). FTIR highlights the presence of polyphenolic and carboxylate moieties. The surface texture is rod-like with intermittent non-homogeneous pores with occasional fractures. The equilibrium reaches within 60 min with the maximum adsorption capacity of 20.917 mg/g. The fibrous powder of kashful stalk (KFS) follows pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.999 for linear and R2 = 0.985 for non-linear) kinetics and both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model (for linear, Langmuir R2=0.995; for non-linear, R2 = 0.994 for both Langmuir and Freundlich model). The uptake process was spontaneous (ΔG= -3.077 kJ/mol) and endothermic (ΔH = 17.815 kJ/mol). 1:1 methanol could regenerate the dye-loaded material in up to 55% and onward efficiency was conducive for three consecutive cycles. Industrial effluent analysis suggests a real-time removal of ∼55% in the first cycle. Saccharum spontaneum could be exercised to solve environmental problems related to colored water.

Investigation of the Physico-Chemical Properties of the Products Obtained after Mixed Organic-Inorganic Leaching of Spent Li-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are currently one of the most important mobile energy storage units for portable electronics such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc. Their widespread application leads to the generation of large amounts of waste, so their recycling plays an important role in environmental policy. In this work, the process of leaching with sulfuric acid for the recovery of metals from spent Li-ion batteries in the presence of glutaric acid and hydrogen peroxide as reducing agents is presented. Experimental results indicate that glutaric-acid application improves the leaching performance compared to the use of just hydrogen peroxide under the same conditions. Obtained samples of leaching residues after mixed inorganic-organic leaching were characterized with Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.
