Association of asthma and sleep insufficiency among South Korean adolescents: analysis of web-based self-reported data from the Korean youth risk behavior web-based survey

Association of Sleep Duration and Weekend Catch-Up Sleep with Suicidal Ideation among Adolescents with Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent allergic disease in children that often causes sleep disturbance and which is associated with diminished quality of life and heightened susceptibility to depression and suicidality. In this study, we investigate the relationship between weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS) and mental health in a sample of 71,434 adolescents with AD and 221,057 without AD using multivariate logistic regression analysis. We hypothesized that adolescents with AD experience shorter total and daytime sleep due to pruritus, with compensatory longer WCUS. We found that the lifetime prevalence of AD was 24.4%, and that adolescents with AD slept less overall, with significantly shorter weekday and weekend sleep durations but longer weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS). Sleep dissatisfaction was markedly higher in the AD group. Interestingly, our results suggest that prolonged WCUS is a protective factor against suicidal ideation in adolescents with AD. The study highlights the importance of addressing sleep patterns in adolescents with AD to enhance mental health. Overall, our findings indicate a need for increased awareness and intervention strategies to ensure sufficient sleep and reduce the risk of suicidal ideation in this population.

Association of sleep disorders with asthma: a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Animal experiments and clinical trials have revealed a potential relationship between sleep disorders and asthma. However, the associations between these factors remain unclear.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases for eligible studies published before 30 December 2022. Studies investigating the association between sleep disorders (insomnia, poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep time) and asthma were selected. Sleep disorders were assessed using questionnaires, interviews, or medical records. Asthma was diagnosed based on medical history and drug use. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality checklist were employed for quality assessment. We used OR with 95% CI as the effect measures and forest plots to display the results. Heterogeneity was evaluated using I2 statistics and subgroup analyses were performed for bias analysis. Publication bias was evaluated using the funnel plots and Egger's test.

RESULTS

Twenty-three studies were included in the primary analysis, which suggested a positive association between sleep disorders and asthma (OR: 1.38, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.74). Subgroup analyses were conducted according to the study design, age, family history of asthma and type of sleep disorders. We did not find any association between sleep disorders and asthma in children aged ˂12 years (OR: 1.13, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.32). The association was insignificant in studies where the family history of asthma was adjusted for (OR: 1.16, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.42). Funnel plot and Egger's test indicated a significant publication bias.

CONCLUSION

Sleep disorders are associated with an increased prevalence and incidence of asthma. However, the quality of the evidence was low because of potential biases.

Pediatric asthma and non-allergic comorbidities: a review of current risk and proposed mechanisms

It is increasingly recognized that children with asthma are at a higher risk of other non‐allergic concurrent diseases than the non‐asthma population. A plethora of recent research has reported on these comorbidities and progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms for comorbidity. The goal of this review was to assess the most recent evidence (2016–2021) on the extent of common comorbidities (obesity, depression and anxiety, neurodevelopmental disorders, sleep disorders and autoimmune diseases) and the latest mechanistic research, highlighting knowledge gaps requiring further investigation. We found that the majority of recent studies from around the world demonstrate that children with asthma are at an increased risk of having at least one of the studied comorbidities. A range of potential mechanisms were identified including common early life risk factors, common genetic factors, causal relationships, asthma medication and embryologic origins. Studies varied in their selection of population, asthma definition and outcome definitions. Next, steps in future studies should include using objective measures of asthma, such as lung function and immunological data, as well as investigating asthma phenotypes and endotypes. Larger complex genetic analyses are needed, including genome‐wide association studies, gene expression–functional as well as pathway analyses or Mendelian randomization techniques; and identification of gene–environment interactions, such as epi‐genetic studies or twin analyses, including omics and early life exposure data. Importantly, research should have relevance to clinical and public health translation including clinical practice, asthma management guidelines and intervention studies aimed at reducing comorbidities.

Association of weekend catch-up sleep ratio and subjective sleep quality with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents

Circadian misalignment caused by differences in sleep duration between weekends and weekdays may be associated with adolescent mental health and sleep quality may be able to compensate for this problem. This study aimed to investigate the association between weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) ratio and sleep quality with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among South Korean adolescents. We used data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2015–2019 involving 270,619 adolescents. The weekend CUS ratio was calculated by dividing the average weekend sleep duration by the average weekday sleep duration (< 1.00, 1.00 ≤ CUS < 1.50, or ≥ 1.50). Subjective sleep quality was categorized as poor, moderate, or good. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. A weekend CUS ratio of < 1.00 and poor sleep quality was significantly associated with mental health. Absolutely short sleep duration (CUS < 1.00 and weekday sleep duration < 5 h) was most associated with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, adolescents with a CUS ratio of ≥ 1.50 showed increased odds of depressive symptoms despite having good sleep quality. Appropriate weekend CUS may benefit adolescents’ mental health. When investigating the relationship between adolescents’ sleep and mental health, a weekend CUS ratio should be considered in addition to sleep quality and duration.

Evidence of sleep duration and weekend sleep recovery impact on suicidal ideation in adolescents with allergic rhinitis

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Sleep problems are common in allergic rhinitis (AR) and are a modifiable risk factor for suicidal ideation. However, the effect of sleep duration and weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS)-sleep time on weekends that exceeds sleep time on weekdays-on suicidal ideation for adolescents with AR is unknown. The objective of this study was to explore whether sleep duration and WCUS have an impact on suicidal ideation among adolescents with AR.

METHODS

From the annual Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Surveys (completed from 2013-2017), data were obtained from a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Using self-reported questionnaires, students provided doctor-diagnosed AR and sleep time.

RESULTS

Among 134,417 and 262,653 adolescents with and without AR, respectively, those with AR compared with those without AR had more sleep dissatisfaction (46.6% vs 40.8%), slept less (sleep duration: 6.71 ± 1.37 hours vs 7.01 ± 1.48 hours), and had longer WCUS (3.46 ± 0.11 hours vs 2.11 ± 0.14 hours). After adjustment, the odds ratio of patients with sleep dissatisfaction was a 1.22 (95% confidence interval, 1.17-1.28) times higher risk of suicidal ideation than in those with sleep satisfaction. For average sleep duration (defining 7-8 hours as the reference), the odds ratio of short sleep (≤ 5 hours) was 1.45 (95% confidence interval, 1.32-1.53). Notably, long WCUS (≥ 2 hours) was significantly associated with decreased suicidal ideation (odds ratio, 0.85; 95% confidence interval, 0.81-0.92).

CONCLUSIONS

Although further research is needed to clarify this association, under the condition of sleep deprivation, WCUS at a certain extent may be associated with a low risk for suicidal ideation in adolescents with AR.

Association between weekend catch-up sleep and executive functions in Chinese school-aged children

STUDY OBJECTIVES

Although weekend catch-up sleep is common among children, the association between weekend catch-up sleep and executive functions remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether weekend catch-up sleep was related to executive functions in school-aged children.

METHODS

We analyzed data for 4,699 children (9.00 years ± 1.73 years old, 52.9% boys) from 5 primary schools in Guangzhou, China. Executive functions performance was examined by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function Parent Form. Validated self-report questionnaires were used to assess sleep status, socioeconomic status, and health behaviors. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to assess the association of weekend catch-up sleep duration with executive functions.

RESULTS

Weekday sleep was negatively associated with scores on three composite indices (Behavioral Regulation Index, Metacognition Index, Global Executive Composite), while weekend catch-up sleep was positively associated with them. Children with < 9 hours weekday sleep duration had higher scores in all indices, and there was no correlation between weekend catch-up sleep and scores of all indices (P > .05). For children who slept ≥ 9 hours on weekdays, weekend catch-up sleep of more than 1 hour was associated with increased scores of Behavioral Regulation Index, Metacognition Index, and Global Executive Composite (P < .05). There was no interaction between sex, age, and weekend catch-up sleep and executive functions (P > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Weekend catch-up sleep could not restore the executive functions deficits related to short weekday sleep. Weekend catch-up sleep over 1 hour may have adverse effects on executive functions in school-aged children.
