Association between maternal age at menarche and newborn size

The impact of maternal age at menarche on newborn size was tested using data from 4,996 single births taking place at Vienna, Austria, between 1985 and 1995--so-called teenager pregnancies were excluded from the present analyses. All women experienced pregnancies between the ages of 19 to 42 years. Maturational time was related significantly to infant weight and length independent of maternal age and behavioral variables such as smoking. Early maturation, i.e., age at menarche before the 12th birthday, was significantly associated with decreased newborn weight and size. The incidence of low-weight newborns was significantly higher in early-maturing mothers. The more favorable nutritional status of women whose menarche occurred relatively early was not able to compensate for the negative effects of early maturation on intrauterine growth. Higher circulating estrogen levels in early maturers preserved into adulthood are discussed as possible reasons for intrauterine growth retardation of the offspring of early-maturing mothers.

Impact of the age at menarche on adult body composition in healthy pre- and postmenopausal women

The present study focuses on the impact of age at menarche on body composition development during adulthood. With 459 healthy middle-class women between 18 and 67 years (x = 41.5) the association between age at menarche and body composition was tested. Body composition, described by absolute and relative amount of fat mass, lean body mass, and bone mass, was estimated by means of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. In order to exclude the influence of the menopausal transition on body composition, pre- and postmenopausal females were examined separately. The absolute amount of body fat was significantly lower within the group of women whose menarche occurred later. However, postmenopausal females exhibit less significant relations between the two trait systems than premenopausal women. This may be due to the impact of menopausal transition which affected the hormone levels and body composition development independently from the adolescent hormonal transition. While in both proband groups the quantitative amount of body fat was significantly related to menarcheal age, a significant relation between menarcheal age and adult body fat distribution could not be verified.

Differential fertility and body build in !Kung San and Kavango females from northern Namibia

The study examines the impact of body build on differential fertility patterns in 93 !Kung San and 85 Kavango females from northern Namibia. In both groups shorter females had more offspring, but also more dead offspring, than taller females. The interaction between body weight and fertility was different in both groups and may be due to different nursing behaviour. There was a positive relationship between the typical pedomorphy and fertility in the !Kung San, and directional selection processes may be important.

Age at menarche in relation to adult body size and physique

The relationship of early and late menarche with adult body dimensions has been studied on a sample of 147 young adult women drawn from an urban Punjabi population of Chandigarh and Ludhiana. The results indicate that girls with early menarche (age 10 to 11) have significantly smaller skeletal dimensions (both longitudinal and transverse) and more subcutaneous fat than those with average or late menarche. The girls with late menarche have on average more height for weight than early maturers. Results indicate that there is a biological determinant of the observed association between menarcheal age and fatness and adult body size.

Threshold hypotheses, development age, and menstrual function

Hypotheses relating the onset and maintenance of menstrual function to threshold levels of various parameters have been subject to statistical critique. Analysis of trends in parameter variance, applied here to data from the Berkeley Guidance Study, discriminates between the predictions of such hypotheses and those of the more traditional concept of developmental age.
