The Experience of Living through the Transition from Adolescence to Adulthood for Young People with Cerebral Palsy

This study explored the lived experience of transition from adolescence to adulthood for young people with cerebral palsy to inform occupational therapy practitioners as to what might promote positive life opportunities. A phenomenological methodology was used with six participants, aged 18 to 25 years with cerebral palsy. The findings are presented in the form of hermeneutic stories and three themes: The storm of uncertainty; time, space and the body, Capsizing in a world of others and, Securing anchorage; being heard and understood. Recommendations include service integration across health, social care and education based on partnership and provision of coordinators.

Dental visit experience and dental care barriers among Hong Kong preschool children with special education needs

BACKGROUND

Children with special education needs (SEN) require additional supports in education settings, as well as extra supports in healthcare services.

AIM

To investigate dental visit experience and dental care barriers among Hong Kong preschoolers with SEN.

DESIGN

This was designed as a cross-sectional study. A structured questionnaire was employed to investigate dental attendance and dental care barriers among Hong Kong preschoolers with SEN. Binary logistic regression and multi-factor ANOVA were performed to identify factors associated with children's dental visit experience.

RESULTS

A total of 383 children were included in the final analysis. The average age of the recruited children was 3.87 ± 0.95 years. 72.5% parents reported that dental visits were a challenging task for their children. Among children with caries, 70.7% had never visited a dentist. Regression models indicated that (a) children over 3 years or children whose parents received tertiary education were more likely to visit a dentist; (b) the existence of dental care barriers was associated with children's primary diagnosis, practical skills, conceptual skills, and parents' education attainment; and (c) children with low conceptual skills (95%CI:0.71 to 2.40, P < .001), or children from low-income families (95%CI:1.21 to -0.06, P = .031) had more dental care barriers than their counterparts.

CONCLUSION

Unmet dental treatment needs and dental care barriers existed among pre-schoolers with SEN. Dental care barriers were associated with children's developmental profile, parents' education attainment, and household income.

The views and aspirations of young people with autism spectrum disorders and their provision in the new Education Health and Care plans in England

Background: The new special educational needs and disability legislation in England has introduced Education Health and Care plans as statutory documents for children with special educational needs, and has extended provision beyond compulsory education, placing transition in a compelling position. This policy recognises the need to include the views, wishes and aspirations of children and young people in the development of provision to cater for their needs. For young people with autism spectrum disorders and their families, transition to post-16 education and employment could be challenging. This study aimed to explore how voices of young people with autism spectrum disorders are captured in their Education Health and Care plans.Methods: These views were collected from the Education Health and Care plans of 12 young people with autism spectrum disorders. These plans were analysed inductively and deductively through content analysis, using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Children and Youth Version as a coding framework.Results: Discrepancies were found between plans concerning the ways in which the voices of young people with ASD were elicited. A total of 189 functioning codes were identified, with a prevalence of activities and participation codes to reflect their views, followed by body functions and lastly environmental factors.Conclusion: These disparities are discussed in light of the biopsychosocial model of functioning and health, and the new English policy. Implications for adopting the International Classification of Functioning framework to give voice to young people with autism spectrum disorders are also discussed.Implications for rehabilitationYoung people with autism spectrum disorders face many challenges in their transition to post-16 education and employment.Engaging young people with autism spectrum disorders in matters that affect their own lives contribute to the development of provision that is aligned with their wishes and aspirations.Practitioners collaborating in the development of Education Health and Care plans should ensure that young people are effectively involved in the development of their own plans.The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version provides a systematic framework and language for coding and recording data from different sources with which to capture young people's views.
