Stem cells-derived in vitro meat: from petri dish to dinner plate

Sustainable food supply to the world is possibly the greatest challenge that human civilization has ever faced. Among animal sourced foods, meat plays a starring role in human food chain. Traditional meat production necessitates high proportion of agricultural land, energy and clean water for rearing meat-producing animals; also massive emission of greenhouse gases from the unutilized nutrients of the digestive process into the environment is a major challenge to the world. Also, conventional meat production is associated with evolution and spread of superbugs and zoonotic infections. In vitro meat has the potential to provide a healthy alternative nutritious meal and to avoid the issues associated with animal slaughtering and environmental effects. Stem cell technology may provide a fascinating approach to produce meat in an animal-free environment. Theoretically, in vitro meat can supplement the meat produced by culling the animals and satisfy the global demand. This article highlights the necessity and potential of stem cell-derived in vitro meat as an alternative source of animal protein vis-a-vis the constraints of conventional approaches of meat production.

Avian Influenza Viruses Detected in Birds in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review

In the recent past, sub-Saharan Africa has not escaped the devastating effects of avian influenza virus (AIV) in poultry and wild birds. This systematic review describes the prevalence, spatiotemporal distribution, and virus subtypes detected in domestic and wild birds for the past two decades (2000–2019). We collected data from three electronic databases, PubMed, SpringerLink electronic journals and African Journals Online, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. A total of 1656 articles were reviewed, from which 68 were selected. An overall prevalence of 3.0% AIV in birds was observed. The prevalence varied between regions and ranged from 1.1% to 7.1%. The Kruskal–Wallis and Wilcoxon signed-rank sum test showed no significant difference in the prevalence of AIV across regions, χ²(3) = 5.237, p = 0.1553 and seasons, T = 820, z = −1.244, p = 0.2136. Nineteen hemagglutinin/neuraminidase subtype combinations were detected during the reviewed period, with southern Africa recording more diverse AIV subtypes than other regions. The most detected subtype was H5N1, followed by H9N2, H5N2, H5N8 and H6N2. Whilst these predominant subtypes were mostly detected in domestic poultry, H1N6, H3N6, H4N6, H4N8, H9N1 and H11N9 were exclusively detected in wild birds. Meanwhile, H5N1, H5N2 and H5N8 were detected in both wild and domestic birds suggesting circulation of these subtypes among wild and domestic birds. Our findings provide critical information on the eco-epidemiology of AIVs that can be used to improve surveillance strategies for the prevention and control of avian influenza in sub-Saharan Africa.

Evolution of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Virus in Poultry, Togo, 2018

In 2015, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses reemerged in poultry in West Africa. We describe the introduction of a reassortant clade 2.3.2.1c virus into Togo in April 2018. Our findings signal further local spread and evolution of these viruses, which could affect animal and human health.

Novel protein microarray for the detection of avian influenza virus antibodies and simultaneous distinction of antibodies against H5 and H7 subtypes

Avian influenza virus (AIV) can cause serious zoonotic disease, thereby threatening the poultry industry and human health. An efficient and rapid detection approach is crucial to prevent and control the spread of avian influenza. In this study, a novel protein microarray was developed. Haemagglutinin proteins of H5 and H7 subtypes and nucleoprotein (NP) were purified and spotted onto the initiator-integrated poly-(dimethylsiloxane) as antigens. Monoclonal antibodies with inhibition effect were screened and utilized for the synchronous detection of three avian influenza antibodies in different species. In the protein microarray, the cut-off values were 40%, 50% and 30% inhibition for H5 antibody detection; 50%, 50% and 20% for NP antibody detection; 40%, 50% and 40% for H7 antibody detection in chicken, peacock and duck sera, respectively. The 95 serum samples were detected by microarray, and results were compared with the findings of AIV antibody test enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. NP antibody detection in the microarray showed 100% (55/55) agreement ratio in chicken using ELISA. Compared with HI, H5 antibody detection in the microarray showed 100% (95/95) agreement ratio in chicken, peacock and duck, whilst those of H7 displayed 98.18% (54/55) agreement in chicken, 100% (20/20) in peacock and 90% (18/20) in duck. In conclusion, this novel protein microarray is a high-throughput and specific method for the detection of AIV antibodies and simultaneous distinction of antibodies against H5 and H7 subtypes. It can be applied to the serological diagnosis and epidemiological investigation of AIV. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS A novel protein microarray method has been developed. The microarray can detect AIV antibodies and distinguish between H5 and H7 subtypes. The study lays the foundation for simultaneous identification of multiple pathogens.

Avian influenza overview May - August 2018

Between 16 May and 15 August 2018, three highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N8) outbreaks in poultry establishments and three HPAI A(H5N6) outbreaks in wild birds were reported in Europe. Three low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) outbreaks were reported in three Member States. Few HPAI and LPAI bird cases have been detected in this period of the year, in accordance with the seasonal expected pattern of LPAI and HPAI. There is no evidence to date that HPAI A(H5N8) and A(H5N6) viruses circulating in Europe have caused any human infections. The risk of zoonotic transmission to the general public in Europe is considered to be very low. Several HPAI outbreaks in poultry were reported during this period from Russia. The presence of the A(H5N2) and A(H5N8) viruses in parts of Russia connected with fall migration routes of wild birds is of concern for possible introduction and spread with wild birds migrating to the EU. Although few AI outbreaks were observed in Africa, Asia and the Middle East during the reporting period, the probability of AI virus introductions from non‐EU countries via wild birds particularly via the north‐eastern route from Russia is increasing, as the fall migration of wild birds will start in the coming weeks. Further, the lower temperatures in autumn and winter may facilitate the environmental survival of avian influenza viruses potentially introduced to Europe.
