Selective separation of deltamethrin by molecularly imprinted polymers using a β-cyclodextrin derivative as the functional monomer

Preparation of arctiin moleculary imprinted polymers with 4-vinylpyridine and Allyl-β-cyclodextrin as binary monomers under molecular crowding conditions

This paper reported a feasible method to prepare molecularly imprinted polymer (MIPs) using 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and Allyl-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as binary functional monomer in the presence of polystyrene (PS). This is the first time that a surrounding of macromolecular crowding was established to improve the imprinting effect of cyclodextrins as monomer in organic solvents. The morphological and characteristics of the polymers with macromolecular crowding reagents were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and nitrogen adsorption experiments. The MIPs were synthesized with 4-VP and β-CD as binary functional monomers, a series of experiments were conducted to compare with the control groups. Furthermore, the selectivity of MIP for analogues experiment showed that the β-CD/4-VP MIP has higher specific recognition for arctiin than β-CD/4-VP NIP. A purification method by β-CD/4-VP MIPs coupled with macromolecular crowding reagents was developed for extraction arctiin from Arctium lappa L. In the MIP-SPE process, the optimal washing and eluting reagents are methanol/water (5:5) and methanol/acid (9:1), respectively. When using the β-CD/4-VP MIPs as SPE absorbent, the mean recoveries for arctiin were 87% with purity of 95%. All the results indicate that this synthetic method using 4-VP and β-CD as binary functional monomers in the presence of PS is a promising method for the preparation of selective adsorbents for arctiin analysis in Arctium lappa L.

Construction of natural polymeric imprinted materials and their applications in water treatment: A review

Molecularly imprinted materials (MIMs) have been widely used in various fields, including water treatment, chemical sensing, and biotechnology, because of their specific recognition and high selectivity. MIMs are usually obtained via two successive steps, namely, (1) copolymerization and crosslinking reactions of the preassembled complex of comonomers and a specific target compound (2) and thorough removal of template molecules. Some functional polymers are directly used as supporting materials and functional groups assembled with target compound are provided to simplify the preparation of MIMs. Natural polymers, such as chitosan, cyclodextrin, sodium alginate, starch, cellulose, lignin and their derivatives, are good candidates because of their environmentally friendly properties, low costs, and abundant active functional groups. In this study, different methods for the preparation of natural polymeric MIMs were reviewed in terms of the construction of microscopic binding cavities and macroscopic visible condensed structures with different shapes. Natural polymeric MIMs in water treatment applications, such as adsorption and detection of various pollutants from aqueous solutions, were summarized. Prospects on the development of novel and high-performance natural polymeric MIMs were discussed to overcome the difficulties in their preparation and applications.

Developments of Smart Drug-Delivery Systems Based on Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Targeted Cancer Therapy: A Short Review

Cancer therapy is still a huge challenge, as especially chemotherapy shows several drawbacks like low specificity to tumor cells, rapid elimination of drugs, high toxicity and lack of aqueous solubility. The combination of molecular imprinting technology with magnetic nanoparticles provides a new class of smart hybrids, i.e., magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) to overcome limitations in current cancer therapy. The application of these complexes is gaining more interest in therapy, due to their favorable properties, namely, the ability to be guided and to generate slight hyperthermia with an appropriate external magnetic field, alongside the high selectivity and loading capacity of imprinted polymers toward a template molecule. In cancer therapy, using the MMIPs as smart-drug-delivery robots can be a promising alternative to conventional direct administered chemotherapy, aiming to enhance drug accumulation/penetration into the tumors while fewer side effects on the other organs. Overview: In this review, we state the necessity of further studies to translate the anticancer drug-delivery systems into clinical applications with high efficiency. This work relates to the latest state of MMIPs as smart-drug-delivery systems aiming to be used in chemotherapy. The application of computational modeling toward selecting the optimum imprinting interaction partners is stated. The preparation methods employed in these works are summarized and their attainment in drug-loading capacity, release behavior and cytotoxicity toward cancer cells in the manner of in vitro and in vivo studies are stated. As an essential issue toward the development of a body-friendly system, the biocompatibility and toxicity of the developed drug-delivery systems are discussed. We conclude with the promising perspectives in this emerging field. Development of Water-Compatible Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Based on Functionalized β-Cyclodextrin for Controlled Release of Atropine

Herein, a novel method for molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) using methacrylic acid functionalized beta-cyclodextrin (MAA-β-CD) monomer is presented, which was designed as a potential water-compatible composite for the controlled release of atropine (ATP). The molecularly imprinted microspheres with pH-sensitive characteristics were fabricated using thermally-initiated precipitation polymerization, employing ATP as a template molecule. The effects of different compounds and concentrations of cross-linking agents were systematically investigated. Uniform microspheres were obtained when the ratio between ATP, MAA-β-CD, and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) was 1:4:20 (mol/mol/mol) in polymerization system. The ATP loading equilibrium data was best suited to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The in vitro drug release study was assessed under simulated oral administration conditions (pH 1.5 and 7.4). The potential usefulness of MIPs as drug delivery devices are much better than non-molecularly imprinted polymers (NIPs). The study shows that the prepared polymers are a pH stimuli-responsive system, which controlled the release of ATP, indicating the potential applications in the field of drug delivery.

A microtitre chemiluminescence sensor for detection of pyrethroids based on dual-dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer and computational simulation

The residues of pyrethroids in foods of animal origin are dangerous to the consumers, so this study presented a chemiluminescence sensor for determination of pyrethroids in chicken samples. A dual-dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer capable of recognizing 10 pyrethroids was synthesized. The results of computation simulation showed that the specific 3D conformations of the templates had important influences on the polymer' recognition ability. The polymer was used to prepare a sensor on conventional 96-well microplates, and the sample solution was added into the wells for direct absorption. The absorbed analytes were initiated with the bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)oxalate-H₂ O₂ -imidazole system, and the chemiluminescence intensity was used for analyte quantification. Results showed that one assay was finished within 12 min, and this sensor could be reused four times. The limits of detection for the 10 analytes were in the range o0.3-6.0 pg/ml, and the recoveries from the standards of fortified blank chicken samples were in the range 70.5-99.7%.

Novel molecularly imprinted polymer based on β-cyclodextrin@graphene oxide: Synthesis and application for selective diphenylamine determination

A sensitive and selective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the determination of diphenylamine (DPA) was developed based on host-guest interactions of a cyclodextrin-based polymer which possesses an inherent affinity for the target. The proposed GO@MIP has been prepared using the graphene oxide (GO) sheets as surface of polymerization, DPA as target molecule, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and acrylamide (AM) as functional monomers, azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator and N, N methylene bisacrylamide (MBAm) as crosslinker which denoted as GO@MIP nanocomposite. The MIP sites were formed by the inclusion complex through interaction of DPA and β-CD, followed by extraction of target. The resulting GO@MIP nanocomposite possess a fast adsorption kinetics, highly improved imprinting effect, high adsorption capacity, and it can be applied to fast extraction of DPA. The resultant GO@MIP nanocomposite was characterized using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. On the other hand, the non-imprinted polymer (GO@NIP nanocomposite) has been synthesized and was used in the adsorption experiments. The MIP exhibited good affinity with a maximum adsorption capacity of 95.98mgg^-1 and excellent selectivity toward DPA than other structural analogues such as 2-amino benzophenone and dithizone.

Nano-Sized Cyclodextrin-Based Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Adsorbents for Perfluorinated Compounds-A Mini-Review

Recent efforts have been directed towards the design of efficient and contaminant selective remediation technology for the removal of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) from soils, sediments, and aquatic environments. While there is a general consensus on adsorption-based processes as the most suitable methodology for the removal of PFCs from aquatic environments, challenges exist regarding the optimal materials design of sorbents for selective uptake of PFCs. This article reviews the sorptive uptake of PFCs using cyclodextrin (CD)-based polymer adsorbents with nano- to micron-sized structural attributes. The relationship between synthesis of adsorbent materials and their structure relate to the overall sorption properties. Hence, the adsorptive uptake properties of CD-based molecularly imprinted polymers (CD-MIPs) are reviewed and compared with conventional MIPs. Further comparison is made with non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) that are based on cross-linking of pre-polymer units such as chitosan with epichlorohydrin in the absence of a molecular template. In general, MIPs offer the advantage of selectivity, chemical tunability, high stability and mechanical strength, ease of regeneration, and overall lower cost compared to NIPs. In particular, CD-MIPs offer the added advantage of possessing multiple binding sites with unique physicochemical properties such as tunable surface properties and morphology that may vary considerably. This mini-review provides a rationale for the design of unique polymer adsorbent materials that employ an intrinsic porogen via incorporation of a macrocyclic compound in the polymer framework to afford adsorbent materials with tunable physicochemical properties and unique nanostructure properties.

Exploiting β-cyclodextrin in molecular imprinting for achieving recognition of benzylparaben in aqueous media

The molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) based on methacrylic acid functionalized β-cyclodextrin (MAA-β-CD) monomer was synthesized for the purpose of selective recognition of benzylparaben (BzP). The MAA-β-CD monomer was produced by bridging a methacrylic acid (MAA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) using toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) by reacting the –OH group of MAA and one of the primary –OH groups of β-CD. This monomer comprised of triple interactions that included an inclusion complex, π–π interaction, and hydrogen bonding. To demonstrate β-CD performance in MIPs, two MIPs were prepared; molecularly imprinted polymer-methacrylic acid functionalized β-cyclodextrin, MIP(MAA-β-CD), and molecularly imprinted polymer-methacrylic acid, MIP(MAA); both prepared by a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) in the bulk polymerization process. Both MIPs were characterized using the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The presence of β-CD not only influenced the morphological structure, it also affected the specific surface area, average pore diameter, and total pore volume of the MIP. The rebinding of the imprinting effect was evaluated in binding experiments, which proved that the β-CD contributed significantly to the enhancement of the recognition affinity and selective adsorption of the MIP.
