Sorption of the herbicides diquat and difenzoquat from aqueous medium by polymeric resins in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate: Kinetic and mechanistic study

Cellulose Acetate Film Containing Bonechar for Removal of Metribuzin from Contaminated Drinking Water

Bonechar presents high sorption capacity for mobile herbicides retained in soil and water. However, its use in a granulated and/or powder form makes it difficult to remove water. The objective of this study was to produce a cellulose acetate film with bonechar as a viable alternative to remove metribuzin from water. The treatments were composed of 2 and 3 g of bonechar fixed on a cellulose acetate film, pure bonechar, and a control (no bonechar). The sorption and desorption study was carried out in the equilibrium batch mode with five concentrations of metribuzin (0.25, 0.33, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg L−1). The water used in the experiment was potable water. Herbicide analysis was performed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The addition of 2 and 3 g of the bonechar fixed on the acetate film sorbed 40% and 60%, respectively, of the metribuzin at the lowest concentrations (0.25, 0.33, and 0.5 mg L−1). For both additions, desorption was low, being 7% and 2.5% at 24 and 120 h, respectively. There are still no reports of the production of cellulose acetate film with bonechar for herbicide removal in water, considered an alternative of easy handling and indicated for water treatment plants.

Strong adsorption of metolachlor by biochar prepared from walnut shells in water

In this study, we investigated the removal of metolachlor (MET) by biochar (BC) prepared from walnut shells (W-BC) compared with BCs made from cow dung (D-BC) and corn cobs (C-BC) by characterizing the adsorption kinetics, pH, adsorbent dose, and ionic strength, and using isotherm models. Weight analysis was also conducted to understand the adsorption capacity and adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that the MET removal rates were 87.89% (W-BC), 52.91% (D-BC), and 10.91% (C-BC), respectively. According to the results fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, the saturated adsorption capacities for MET were 96.15 mg g^-1, 37.88 mg g^-1, and 11.98 mg g^-1 with W-BC, D-BC, and C-BC, respectively. The results demonstrated that W-BC was particularly effective at MET removal. Analyses based on the weights of different factors showed that the correlation coefficient was highest for the BC type with 46.11% in the MET adsorption process, followed by the initial concentration of MET (19.29%). The adsorption of MET by BCs was probably influenced mostly by electron donor-acceptor interactions and pore filling. These results may facilitate further studies of the adsorption mechanism and optimization of the process.

Sorption Features of Polyurethane Foam Functionalized with Salicylate for Chlorpyrifos: Equilibrium, Kinetic Models and Thermodynamic Studies

Commercial polyurethane foam was treated with salicylate salt to synthesize PUFSalicylate (PUFS) as a novel, promising, stable and inexpensive adsorbent for chlorpyrifos (CPF) extraction. The properties of PUFS were investigated using UV-Vis spectroscopy, apparent density, FTIR spectroscopy, pHZPC, BET surface area, elemental analysis, TGA and DTG tests. Batch experiments were performed for the sorption of CPF under different salicylate concentrations, pH, shaking time, ionic strength, agitation speed, sorbent mass, batch factor and initial concentration of CPF. The results confirmed that 97.4% of CPF in a 25 mL solution, 10 μg/L concentration, could be retained by only 0.3 mg of PUFS (1:105mass ratio of PUFS: solution). In addition, the maximum capacity of PUFS for the sorption of CPF was 1249.8 μg/mg (3.9 × 10-5 mol/g) within 180 min. The negative values of ΔH° and ΔG° indicated that the sorption of CPF onto PUFS is an exothermic spontaneous process (favorable). The calculated data from the experimental procedures fitted perfectly with Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9952) and the kinetic Equation of pseudo-second order. In addition, the R2 value in the Elovich Equation recorded higher when compared to the Morris-Weber and Bangham Equations; hence, the pore diffusion is not the rate-determining step. Thus, the use of PUFSalicylate for the removal of chlorpyrifos contaminations from agriculture runoff is applicable.

Sorption of carbendazim and linuron from aqueous solutions with activated carbon produced from spent coffee grounds: Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic approach

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) have been used for the production of activated carbon (AC) by impregnation with different ratios of phosphoric acid at 600 °C, Xp (H₃PO₄/coffee): 3:1^30%, 4:1^30%, 3:1^50% and 4:1^50%. The obtained AC was characterized by BET, FTIR and SEM. BET surface area corresponds to 803.422 m² g^-1. The influences of the main parameters such as contact time, the pesticides initial concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature on the efficiency of separation process were investigated during the batch operational mode. Results were modeled by adsorption isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms, which gave satisfactory correlation coefficients. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir isotherms were 11.918 mg g^-1 for carbendazim and 5.834 mg g^-1 for linuron at room temperature. Adsorption kinetics of carbendazim and linuron have been studied by the pseudo-first-order, the pseudo-second-order and the intraparticle diffusion model. The results of adsorption kinetics have been fitted the best by pseudo-second-order model. The resulted data from FTIR characterization pointed to the presence of many functional groups on the AC surface. SCG adsorbent, as an eco-friendly and low-cost material, showed high potential for the removal of carbendazim and linuron from aqueous solutions.

Carbon nanotube-based magnetic and non-magnetic adsorbents for the high-efficiency removal of diquat dibromide herbicide from water: OMWCNT, OMWCNT-Fe3O4 and OMWCNT-κ-carrageenan-Fe3O4 nanocomposites

In this study, carbon nanotube-based adsorbents, oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotube (OMWCNT) with non-magnetic property and OMWCNT-Fe₃O₄ and OMWCNT-κ-carrageenan-Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites with magnetic property, having different structural and surface properties were prepared and their adsorptive properties for the removal of toxic diquat dibromide (DQ) herbicide from water by adsorption were determined in detail. For each adsorption system, the effects of initial DQ concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption processes were determined. Equilibrium time was found to be 300 min for DQ solutions. OMWCNT showed faster adsorption and higher maximum adsorption capacity value than magnetic adsorbents. With increasing initial herbicide concentration from 5.43 mg.L^-1 to 16.3 mg.L^-1, the values of initial sorption rate exhibited a decrease from 29.1 mg.g^-1.min^-1 to 4.28 mg.g^-1.min^-1 for OMWCNT-DQ system, from 1.21 mg.g^-1.min^-1 to 0.823 mg.g^-1.min^-1 for OMWCNT-Fe₃O₄-DQ system and from 0.674 mg.g^-1.min^-1 to 0.612 mg.g^-1.min^-1 OMWCNT-κ-carrageenan-Fe₃O₄ system. Maximum adsorption capacity value of OMWCNT was approximately 2.8-fold higher than magnetic OMWCNT-Fe₃O₄ and 5.4-fold higher than magnetic OMWCNT-κ-carrageenan-Fe₃O₄ at 25 °C. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm data obtained for all adsorption systems were well-fitted by pseudo second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of DQ onto carbon nanotube-based adsorbents was spontaneous and endothermic process. Furthermore, OMWCNT having the highest herbicide adsorption capacity could be regenerated and reused at least five times. This study showed that carbon nanotube-based adsorbents with magnetic and non-magnetic property were of high adsorption performance for the removal of DQ from water and could be promising adsorbent materials for the efficient removal of herbicides from wastewaters.

Human and experimental toxicology of diquat poisoning: Toxicokinetics, mechanisms of toxicity, clinical features, and treatment

Diquat (1,1'-ethylene-2,2'-bipyridinium ion; DQ) is a nonselective quick-acting herbicide, which is used as contact and preharvest desiccant to control terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. Several cases of human poisoning were reported worldwide mainly due to intentional ingestion of the liquid formulations. Its toxic potential results from its ability to produce reactive oxygen and nitrogen species through redox cycling processes that can lead to oxidative stress and potentially cell death. Kidney is the main target organ due to DQ toxicokinetics and redox cycling. There is no antidote against DQ intoxications, and the efficacy of treatments currently applied is still unsatisfactory. The aim of this work was to review the most relevant human and experimental findings related to DQ, characterizing its chemistry, activity as herbicide, mechanisms of toxicity, consequences of poisoning, and potential therapeutic approaches taking into account previous experience in developing antidotes for paraquat, a more toxic bipyridinium herbicide.

Polyurethane foams containing residues of petroleum industry catalysts as recoverable pH-sensitive sorbents for aqueous pesticides

To investigate ways of mitigating the contamination of water with herbicides, which is a well-recognized global problem, we prepared natural resource-based polyurethane foams containing different amounts of petroleum industry catalyst residue (RC) and tested them as atrazine (ATZ, a common herbicide) sorbents in aqueous solutions. The above sorbents were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, microtomography, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption/desorption of ATZ thereon was investigated as a function of foam composition, pH, initial ATZ concentration, and time. The obtained results showed that the porosity, pore size, and pore interconnectivity of the prepared sorbents were well suited for optimal ATZ removal. At pH 2, foams with high RC contents achieved higher ATZ removal efficiencies (e.g., 25%) than the pristine foam (12%). Conversely, ATZ removal was disfavored at high pH, which was attributed to restricted ATZ-sorbent interactions due to changes in the sorbent surface charge. The presence of other species (such as pectin, which is usually found in fruits) did not interfere with ATZ removal. ATZ desorption was most effective at high pH, enabling the regeneration and re-use of sorbents and thus reducing large-scale application costs.
