Polymer Fuel Cell Based on Polybenzimidazole Membrane: A Review

High Molecular Weight AB-Polybenzimidazole and Its Solutions in a Complex Organic Solvent: Dissolution Kinetics and Rheology

AB-polybenzimidazole (ABPBI) dissolution kinetics in an eco-friendly complex acid-free solvent based on dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), methanol and KOH, and the rheological behavior of their solutions are investigated. The optimal component ratio of solvent providing the complete ABPBI dissolution is determined. Methanol containing dissolved KOH contributes to the creation of a single-phase superbasic medium, which accelerates and improves the polymer solubility in a mixture with DMSO, significantly reducing the viscoelasticity of the resulting solution. The optimum methanol content is up to 60 wt.% related to DMSO. The polymer dissolution rate increases by 5 times in this composition. It found the polymer concentration of 9% is close to the dissolution limit due to the strong solution structuring, which is probably associated with an increase in the amount of water released during the KOH-methanol-DMSO interactions. As a result, the conditions for obtaining high concentrated solutions in a complex, mainly organic solvent for fiber spinning are developed. The viscoelastic properties of solutions are measured in the concentration range of 1–9% at temperatures of 20–50 °C. The flow activation energy for 7 and 9% solutions decreases by 1.5 and 2.3 times, respectively, as the content of methanol in the complex solvent increases from 10 to 60%.

Effect of Organo-Silanes Structure on the Properties of Silane-Crosslinked Membranes Based on Cardo Polybenzimidazole PBI-O-PhT

Polybenzimidazoles (PBI) doped with phosphoric acid (PA) are promising electrolytes for medium temperature fuel cells. Their significant disadvantage is a partial or complete loss of mechanical properties and an increase in hydrogen permeability at elevated temperatures. Covalent silanol crosslinking is one possible way to stabilize PBI membranes in the presence of PA. Three organo-substituted silanes, namely (3-Bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane (SiBr), trimethoxy [2-(7-oxabicyclo [4.1.0]hept-3-yl)ethyl]silane (Si-biC) and (3-Glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (KH 560), were used as covalent crosslinkers of PBI-O-PhT in order to determine the effect of the silane structure and crosslinking degree on membrane properties. The crosslinking degree was 1-50%. All crosslinked membranes were characterized by impedance and IR-spectroscopy. The mechanical properties, morphology, stability and hydrogen permeability of the membranes were determined. In the case of silanes with linear substituents (SiBr, KH 560), a denser structure is formed, which is characterized by greater oxidative stability and lower hydrogen permeability in comparison to the silane with a bulk group. All the crosslinked membranes have a higher mechanical strength compared with the initial PBI-O-PhT membrane both before and after doping with PA. Despite the hardening of the polymer matrix of the membranes, their proton conductivity changes insignificantly. It was shown that cross-linked membranes can be used in fuel cells.

Review of manufacturing three-dimensional-printed membranes for water treatment

With the exacerbation of industrialization, water treatment has become a necessary step for the eradication of dyes, heavy metals, oils, pharmaceuticals, and illicit drugs. These pollutants pose an impending threat to the health of humans by causing chronic or acute poisoning. Albeit they are noxious, the presence of some metals in lower concentrations is indispensable for human health. 3D printing (additive manufacturing) (3DP) can contrive nearly any complicated geometric form in a wide array of objects among various scales by a layer-wise method of manufacturing, which is more indubitably designed than any other conventional method. 3DP could remodel the existing patterns of membrane housing and possibly trim down the power demand and chemical use in saltwater desalinating and wastewater purification plants. Membranes that are 3D printed with correctly arranged apertures and shapes enhance material transport and flow athwart the surface of the membrane and at once lessen membrane soiling. This kind of technology forges membranes of polymers, biopolymers, alloys, metals, and ceramics via computer-aided design (CAD). A polylactic acid porous super-hydrophobic membrane with pore size in the range 40-600 μm showed 99.4% oil-water separating power and 60 kL h^-1 m^-2 flux when the pore size was tuned to 250 μm via CAD-aided 3D printing technology. Selectivity of Transport Processes in Ion-Exchange Membranes: Relationship with the Structure and Methods for Its Improvement

Nowadays, ion-exchange membranes have numerous applications in water desalination, electrolysis, chemistry, food, health, energy, environment and other fields. All of these applications require high selectivity of ion transfer, i.e., high membrane permselectivity. The transport properties of ion-exchange membranes are determined by their structure, composition and preparation method. For various applications, the selectivity of transfer processes can be characterized by different parameters, for example, by the transport number of counterions (permselectivity in electrodialysis) or by the ratio of ionic conductivity to the permeability of some gases (crossover in fuel cells). However, in most cases there is a correlation: the higher the flux density of the target component through the membrane, the lower the selectivity of the process. This correlation has two aspects: first, it follows from the membrane material properties, often expressed as the trade-off between membrane permeability and permselectivity; and, second, it is due to the concentration polarization phenomenon, which increases with an increase in the applied driving force. In this review, both aspects are considered. Recent research and progress in the membrane selectivity improvement, mainly including a number of approaches as crosslinking, nanoparticle doping, surface modification, and the use of special synthetic methods (e.g., synthesis of grafted membranes or membranes with a fairly rigid three-dimensional matrix) are summarized. These approaches are promising for the ion-exchange membranes synthesis for electrodialysis, alternative energy, and the valuable component extraction from natural or waste-water. Perspectives on future development in this research field are also discussed.

Synthesis and Properties of Phosphoric-Acid-Doped Polybenzimidazole with Hyperbranched Cross-Linkers Decorated with Imidazolium Groups as High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membranes

Highly phosphoric-acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes exhibit good proton conductivity at high temperatures; however, they suffer from reduced mechanical properties and loss of PA molecules due to the plasticity of PA and the weak interactions between PA and benzimidazoles, especially with the absorption of water. In this work, a series of PBIs with hyperbranched cross-linkers decorated with imidazolium groups (ImOPBI-x, where x is the weight ratio of the hyperbranched cross-linker) as high-temperature proton exchange membranes are designed and synthesized for the first time. We observe how the hyperbranched cross-linkers can endow the membranes with improved oxidative stability and acceptable mechanical performance, and imidazolium groups with strong basicity can stabilize the PA molecules by delocalization and hydrogen bond formation to endow the membranes with an enhanced proton conductivity and a decreased loss of PA molecules. We measured a high proton conductivity of the ImOPBI-x membranes, ranging from 0.058 to 0.089 S cm⁻¹ at 160 °C. In addition, all the ImOPBI-x membranes displayed good mechanical and oxidative properties. At 160 °C, a fuel cell based on the ImOPBI-5 membrane showed a power density of 638 mW cm⁻² and good durability under a hydrogen/oxygen atmosphere, indicating its promising use in anhydrous proton exchange membrane applications.

Tailoring Different Molecular Weight Phenylene-Polybenzimidazole Membranes with Remarkable Oxidative Stability and Conductive Properties for High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

Polybenzimidazole (ph-PBI) polymer was synthesized with different molecular weights (MWs) and casted into conductive films for use in high-temperature fuel cells (FCs). A comprehensive study on the influence of polymer MW on membrane cast efficiency, chemical stability, thermal behavior, tensile strength, conductivity, FC performance, and durability was reported. The synthesized materials were characterized by different techniques, including, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, impedance microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed the importance of manufacturing ph-PBI membranes with controlled properties to achieve high efficiency FCs. High MW ph-PBI membrane (119 kDa) showed a slower rate of chemical degradation, remarkable mechanical properties, and an improved FC performance compared to low MW ph-PBI membrane (39 kDa), thanks to the architecture of high MW ph-PBI. A gain of 91% in proton conductivity with a 47% in FC power density was obtained for the ph-PBI membrane with MW 119 kDa.
