Abstract
Hydrophilic actinide masking agents are believed to be efficient alternatives to circumvent the extensive hazardous organic solvents/diluents typically employed in the liquid-liquid extraction for nuclear waste management. However, the practical application of hydrophilic ligands faces significant challenges in both synthetic/purification procedures and, more importantly, the acid resistance of the ligands themselves. Herein, we have demonstrated the combination of phenanthroline diimide framework with a biomotif of histidine flanking parts could achieve efficient separation of trivalent lanthanides/actinides (also actinides/actinides) under high acidity of over 1 M HNO3. This approach leverages the soft-hard coordination properties of N, O-hybrid ligands, as well as the energetically favored imides for metal coordination and the multiple protonation of histidine. These factors collectively contribute to the synthesis of an easily accessible, highly water-soluble, superior selective, and acid-resistant Am(III) masking agent. Thus, we have shown in this paper, by proper combination of synthetic N, O-hybrid ligand with amino acid, trivalent lanthanide and actinide separation could be efficiently fulfilled in a more sustainable manner.

Abstract
Here, we report the synthesis of the 6-(6-methyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (MTB) ligand that has been developed for lanthanide/actinide separation. A multimethod study of the complexation of MTB with trivalent actinide and lanthanide ions is presented. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the formation of [Ce(MTB)2(NO3)3], [Pr(MTB)(NO3)3H2O], and [Ln(MTB)(NO3)3MeCN] (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd). In addition, the complexation of Cm(III) with MTB in solution was studied by time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy. The results show the formation of [Cm(MTB)1-3]3+ complexes, which occur in two different isomers. Quantum chemical calculations reveal an energy difference between these isomers of 12 kJ mol-1, clarifying the initial observations made by time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS). Furthermore, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis of the Cm(III) and Ln(III) complexes was performed, indicating a stronger covalent contribution in the Cm-N interaction compared to the respective Ln-N interaction. These findings align well with extraction data showing a preferred extraction of Am and Cm over lanthanides (e.g., max. SFAm/Eu = 8.3) at nitric acid concentrations <0.1 mol L-1 HNO3.

Abstract
AgBiO3 is reported for the exclusive oxidation of Am3+ → AmO2+ at near-neutral pH conditions. Literature methods of AmO2+ generation are generally two-step processes; i.e., Am3+ → AmO22+ oxidation followed by AmO22+ → AmO2+ reduction. These methods for Am3+ → AmO2+ oxidation use high temperatures (80-100 °C) and/or several reagents, causing the in situ presence of the AmO2+-complex rather than the AmO2+aq ions. This not only interferes with the much-needed Am-Cm selectivity but also limits the use of AmO2+aq in any other experimental study. The single-step Am3+ → AmO2+ oxidation in the present work using AgBiO3 is done at 25 °C in a non-complexing medium at pH ∼4, making it a first-of-its-kind report. Am-Eu and Am-Cm separation in a single contact, with a separation factor >104, was achieved using the present method, which is unprecedented among aqueous feed solutions. The AmO2+ generated using the present method under non-complexing pH conditions makes it also suitable for exploring the fundamental chemistry of the higher valent americyl ion. A complexation study using the thus-generated AmO2+ ion with acetate ion supports the concept.

Abstract
Separation of Am3+ and Cm3+ is one of the most challenging problems in the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle. In the present work, we exploited the cooperative effect of the opposite selectivity of hydrophobic branched DGA derivatives and hydrophobic N-donor heterocyclic ligands taken in two different phases to achieve improved separation behavior. A systematic study was performed using a series of DGA derivatives to understand the effect and the position of branching in the alkyl chains on the separation behavior of Am3+ and Cm3+. A separation factor (S.F.) value as high as 10 for Cm3+ over Am3+ was obtained in the case of TiBDGA (N,N,N',N'-tetra-iso-butyl diglycolamide) using SO3PhBTPhen ((phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)-1,2,4-triazine-5,5,6,6-tetrayltetrabenzenesulfonic acid) as the aqueous complexant, which is the highest reported value so far for the ligand-based separation of Am3+ and Cm3+ without involving any oxidation or reduction step. The high selectivity favoring Cm3+ ion extraction in the case of this DGA derivative is also explained with the help of computational studies.

Abstract
In the process of handling and storage of radioactive actinides it is essential to selectively sequester the minor actinides, such as Am and Cm, through a competitive complexation process. Herein we computationally designed two core modified ligands (L21- and L3) through systematic oxygen substitution at the NH sites of dipyriamethyrin (L1_2H), a hexadentate expanded porphyrin, and studied their competitive complexation towards trivalent actinides (An = Am/Cm) from their trichlorides using density functional theory (DFT). We observed shorter An-N bonds and longer An-O bonds in complexes based on core modified ligands (L21- and L3). The An-Cl bond length increases with increasing axial coordination number (i.e., from L12- to L3) to accommodate the ligands. All the bonds were identified to be electrostatic in nature. L12- exhibits shorter bonds and larger bond orders on complexing with Am than with Cm. On moving from complexes of L21- to L3, the An-N bond lengths are shortened, while An-O bond lengths become larger. Between the complexes of Am and Cm, there is marginal difference in their bond distances with L21- and L3. Charge analysis shows ligand to metal charge transfer during coordination, with back-donation from An to N/O and Cl. The calculated spin-density analysis indicates that An remains in its trivalent oxidation state on complexation, while orbital occupation analysis shows that the 5f and 6d orbitals are involved in bonding; this was confirmed by molecular orbital (MO) analysis that shows the complexes of L21- and L3 to exhibit higher degeneracy in their overlapping MOs. Further, the energy decomposition analysis (EDA) confirms that all ionic bonds are primarily due to electrostatic contributions, where the orbital contributions increase from L12- to L3 complexes and maximum covalency was observed in Cm complexes due to the energy matching between the 5f orbitals of Cm and the 2p orbitals of N and Cl, compared to Am. To confirm the competitiveness in the complexation of the ligand towards Am vs. Cm, the thermodynamic parameters were analysed for the ligand and metal substitution reactions. L12- shows more affinity towards Am than Cm, while L21- and L3 prefer Cm.

Abstract
Separation of lanthanide (Ln) and minor actinide (MA) elements and mutual separation between minor actinide elements (e.g. Am(III) and Cm(III)) represent a crucial undertaking. However, separating these elements poses a significant challenge owing to their highly similar physicochemical properties. Asymmetric N-heterocyclic ligands such as N-ethyl-6-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)picolinamide (Et-p-Tol-A-PzPy) and N-ethyl-N-(p-tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (ETPhenAm) have recently received considerable attention in the separation of MAs over Ln from acid solutions. By changing the central skeleton structures of these ligands and introducing substituents with different properties on the side chains, their complexation behavior with Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III) may be affected. In this work, we explore four different asymmetric N-containing heterocyclic ligands, namely Et-p-Tol-A-PzPy (L1), N-ethyl-6'-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)-[2,2'-bipyridine]-6-carboxamide (L2), N-ethyl-9-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (L3), and ETPhenAm (L4) using density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results demonstrate the potential of ligands L1-L4 for the extraction and separation of Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III). Ligand analysis shows that ligand L3 binds more easily to the central metal atom, in line with the stronger extraction capacity of L3. In spite of the higher covalence between the side chain and the central metal atom for complexes with L1-L3, the main chain seems to control the stability of the extraction complexes. The preorganized 1,10-phenanthroline backbone also further enhances the extraction performance of L3 and L4. The difference in coordination ability between the side chain donors of these ligands and metal ions may affect their separation efficiency. This work presents theoretical insights into synthesizing novel ligands for separating trivalent actinides by adjusting N-heterocyclic ligands.

Abstract
The separation of trivalent actinide elements from lanthanide elements represents one of the most formidable challenges within the context of nuclear waste partitioning and transmutation (P&T) processes. Consequently, we embarked on a systematic investigation aimed at elucidating the bonding properties and thermodynamic behavior of a N-ethyl-N-tolyl-2-amide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-PTA) ligand in conjunction with trivalent actinide and lanthanide elements. This investigation involved the utilization of various density functional theory (DFT) methods and a comparative analysis between small-core pseudopotential basis sets and all-electron basis sets. It was found that well-performing results were achieved using the PBE0 functional in both bond length and thermodynamic energy calculations, with minimal impact being exerted by the basis set on the results. Furthermore, an exploration was carried out into the bonding and thermodynamic properties of trivalent actinides and lanthanides with ligands derived from Et-Tol-PTA, encompassing non-rigid (La), partially rigid (Lb, Lc), and rigid (Ld) ligands. Thermodynamically, advantages in the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) were exhibited by Lb and Lc ligands, while excellent performance in the separation of Am(III)/Cm(III) was demonstrated by the La ligand. Analyses conducted using quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), reduced density gradient (RDG), and natural bond orbital (NBO) methodologies revealed the presence of partial covalent character in the bonds between oxygen (O) and metal (M), as well as between nitrogen (N) and metal (M), with a higher degree of covalent character being observed in O-Am and N-Am bonds compared to O-Cm/Eu and N-Cm/Eu interactions.

Abstract
The separation of Lns(III) from radioactive Ans(III) in high-level liquid waste remains a formidable hydrometallurgical challenge. Water-soluble ligands are believed to be new frontiers in the search of efficient Lns/Ans separation ligands to close the nuclear fuel cycles and dealing with current existing nuclear waste. Currently, the development of hydrophilic ligands far lags behind their lipophilic counterparts due to their complicated synthetic procedures, inferior extraction performances, and acid tolerances. In this paper, we have showed a series of hydroxyl-group functionalized phenanthroline diimides were efficient masking agents for Am(III)/Eu(III) separation under high acidity (˃ 1 M HNO3). Record high SFEu(III)/Am(III) of 162 and 264 were observed for Phen-2DIC2OH and Phen-2DIC4OH in 1.25 M HNO3 which represents the best Eu(III)/Am(III) separation performance at this acidity. UV-vis absorption, NMR and TRLFS titrations were conducted to elucidate the predominant of 1:1 ligand/metal species under extraction conditions. X-ray data of both the ligand and Eu(III) complex together with DFT calculations revealed the superior extraction performances and selectivities. The current reported hydrophilic ligands were easy to prepare and readily to scale-up, acid tolerant and highly efficient, together with their CHON-compatible nature make them promising candidates in the development of advanced separation processes.

Abstract
Adding hydrophilic ligands into aqueous solutions for the selective binding of actinides(III) is acknowledged as an advanced strategy in Ln(III)/An(III) separation. In view of the recycling and radioactive waste disposal of the minor actinide, there remains an urgent need to design and develop the appropriate ligand for selective separation of An(III) from Ln(III). Herein, four novel hydrophilic ligands with hard-soft hybrid donors, derived from the pyridine and phenanthroline skeletons, were designed and synthesized as masking agents for selective complexation of An(III) in the aqueous phase. The known N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) was used as lipophilic extractant in the organic phase for extraction of Ln(III), and a new strategy for the competitive extraction of An(III) and Ln(III) was developed based on TODGA and the above hydrophilic ligands. The optimal hydrophilic ligand of N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2,9-dicarboxamide-1,10-phenanthroline (2OH-DAPhen) displayed exceptional selectivity toward Am(III) over Ln(III), with the concentrations of HNO3 ranging from 0.05 to 3.0 M. The maximum separation factors were up to 1365 for Eu/Am, 417.66 for Eu/Cm, and 42.38 for La/Am. The coordination mode and bonding property of 2OH-DAPhen with Ln(III) were investigated by 1H NMR titration, UV-vis spectrophotometric titration, luminescence titration, FT-IR, ESI-HRMS analysis, and DFT calculations. The results revealed that the predominant species formed in the aqueous phase was a 1:1 ligand/metal complex. DFT calculations also confirmed that the affinity of 2OH-DAPhen for Am(III) was better than that for Eu(III). The present work using a competitive extraction strategy developed a feasible alternative method for the selective separation of trivalent actinides from lanthanides.

Abstract
The complexation of trivalent lanthanides and minor actinides (Am3+, Cm3+, and Cf3+) by the acyclic aminopolycarboxylate chelators 6,6'-((ethane-1,2-diylbis-((carboxymethyl)azanediyl))bis-(methylene))dipicolinic acid (H4octapa) and 6,6'-((((4-(1-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis-(methylene))bis-((carboxymethyl)azanediyl))bis-(methylene)) dipicolinic acid (H4pypa-peg) were studied using potentiometry, spectroscopy, competitive complexation liquid-liquid extraction, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Two studied reagents are strong multidentate chelators, well-suited for applications seeking radiometal coordination for in-vivo delivery and f-element isolation. The previously reported H4octapa forms a compact coordination packet, while H4pypa-peg is less sterically constrained due to the presence of central pyridine ring. The solubility of H4octapa is limited in a non-complexing high ionic strength perchlorate media. However, the introduction of a polyethylene glycol group in H4pypa-peg increased the solubility without influencing its ability to complex the lanthanides and minor actinides in solution.

Abstract
A reaction of acyl chlorides derived from 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acids with piperazine allows the preparation of the corresponding 24-membered macrocycles in good yield. The structural and spectral properties of these new macrocyclic ligands were thoroughly investigated, revealing promising coordination properties towards f-elements (Am, Eu). It was shown that the prepared ligands can be used for selective extraction of Am(III) from alkaline-carbonate media in presence of Eu(III) with an SFAm/Eu up to 40. Their extraction efficiency is higher than calixarene-type extraction of the Am(III) and Eu(III) pair. Composition of macrocycle-metal complex with Eu(III) was investigated by luminescence and UV-vis spectroscopy. The possibility of such ligands to form complexes of L:Eu = 1:2 stoichiometry is revealed.

Abstract
The minor actinides Am/Cm show multiple possibilities for coordination, providing great opportunities for their extraction and adsorption separation. Herein, we report complexation in an aqueous medium of AmIII/CmIII in the DOTA (H4DOTA = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) cavity with axial ligands (OH-, F-, and H2O), based on the energetics and electronic structure properties using density functional theory (DFT). The formation and substitution reactions of OH--capped complexes are more likely to occur due to their enhanced hydration Gibbs free energies, followed by F-, and then H2O. Both the longer An-ODOTA bond lengths and the larger bite angle (∠O-An-O) in the OH--capped complexes reflect the enhanced coordination provided by the axial ligand, slightly less so for F-. Energy decomposition analysis based on the electronic structure supports the preference for OH--capped complexes with a near-perfect balance between attractive and repulsive contributions toward the interaction. Furthermore, molecular orbital analysis revealed that the frontier molecular orbitals of Am and Cm complexes are substantially different; that is, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) compositions of the Am complexes are all contributed by 5f, while the HOMO and LUMO compositions of the Cm complexes are derived from 5f and 6d, respectively. Finally, the metal-exchange reactions demonstrate competitive complexation of DOTA toward AmIII over CmIII for the OH--capped system. These results imply the importance of coordination chemistry in actinide chemistry in general and specifically in AmIII/CmIII solution chemistry.

Abstract
The first comprehensive structural and extraction study of a 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxamide (L diamide) extractant for U, Np, Pu, Th, Am, and Eu ions showed great potential for actinide separation due to steric hindrance of the amidic side phenyl ring of the given compound. The study of the complexes of An(VI) and Th(IV) with 2,2'-bipyridyldicarboxamide-type extractants demonstrated the structure of the extraction species for the first time. Investigation of the extraction properties with the radiometric and millimolar quantities of actinides showed similar extraction trends. For the first time, a metal-ion-induced phenyl-ring rotation restriction was found for the U, Th, and Eu complexes by employing temperature-dependent dynamic NMR. A study of the solution behavior of the complexes accompanied by density functional theory modeling studies elucidated the mechanism of the unusual C-N bond rotation restriction induced by metal coordination.

Abstract
The fact of the fracture of the extraction curve of lanthanides by 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diamides is explained in terms of the structure of complexes, solvent extraction data and quantum chemical calculations. The solvent extraction proceeds in two competing directions: in the form of neutral complexes LLn(NO3)3 and in the form of tight ion pairs {[LLn(NO3)2 H2O]+ (NO3-).

Abstract
The fractionation of high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants simplifies the handling of its components, and facilitates the reduction of radiotoxic effects on the environment. The search and study of new ligands for solvent extraction, as one of the methods in fractionation, remains a complex and important research task. In this work, four pyridine diphosphonate ligands were synthesized. These ligands are part of the class of the N,O-donor extractants, which are selective towards Am(III). The separation factor SF(Am/Eu) for the best extractant reached values up to 10. The influence of the substituents on the efficiency of extraction and complexation of trivalent f-elements, the kinetics of extraction, and the behavior of the ligand at the interface were described. The effect of nitric acid concentration on the extraction was shown. The stoichiometry of the complexes was determined by slope analysis in solvent extraction experiment and verified by spectrophotometric titration in acetonitrile. Liquid tension experiments with a pendant drop method revealed the interfacial properties of the ligands in "F-3 solvent/H2O" and "F-3 solvent/HNO3" systems. The relationship between the surface activity and the ligand structure was shown. Studies of the extraction kinetics were performed in a modified Lewis cell. The effect of the ligand structure on the extraction rate was shown. The DFT calculation with the B3LYP density functional was used to explain the extraction properties of the ligands, including selectivity. The calculation of the pre-organization energy of the ligands explained the kinetics and extraction patterns for the studied series.

Abstract
Separation of americium (Am) from curium (Cm) could greatly facilitate the development of advanced nuclear fuel cycles, help with accurate nuclear forensic analysis, and allow for more efficient recovery and utilization of the two strategic elements. In this work, an Am/Cm separation strategy based on the stabilization of pentavalent Am in a biphasic solvent extraction system using bismuthate as the oxidant and N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) as the extractant was developed. The distinctive differences between Am(V) and Cm(III) in terms of both steric configuration and charge density afford record high Cm/Am separation factors (>104) through only one single contact in solvent extraction. This separation strategy possesses superior features including fast kinetics, long-time stability, no secondary solid radioactive waste generation, and applicability over a wide range of HNO3 acidities, making it promising for Am/Cm separation and analysis in a variety of applications.

Abstract
Hybrid donor extractants are a promising class of compounds for the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Here, we investigated a series of sterically loaded diphosphonate ligands based on bipyridine (BiPy-PO-iPr and BiPy-PO-cHex) and phenanthroline (Phen-PO-iPr and Phen-PO-cHex). We studied their complex formation with nitrates of trivalent f-elements in solvent extraction systems (Am and Eu) and homogeneous acetonitrile solutions (Nd, Eu, and Lu). Phenanthroline extractants demonstrated the highest efficiency and selectivity [SF(Am/Eu) up to 14] toward Am(III) extraction from nitric acid solutions among all of the studied diphosphonates of N-heterocycles. The binding constants established by UV-vis titration also indicated stronger binding of sterically impaired diphosphonates compared to the primary substituted diphosphonates. NMR titration and slope analysis during solvent extraction showed the formation of 2:1 complexes at high concentrations (>10-3 mol/L) for phenanthroline-based ligands. According to UV-vis titrations at low concentrations (10-5-10-6 mol/L), the phenanthroline-based ligands formed 1:1 complexes. Bipyridine-based ligands formed 1:1 complexes regardless of the ligand concentration. Luminescence titrations revealed that the quantum yields of the complexes with Eu(III) were 81 ± 8% (BiPy-PO-iPr) and 93 ± 9% (Phen-PO-iPr). Single crystals of the structures [Lu(μ2,κ4-(iPrO)2P(O)Phen(O)2(OiPr))(NO3)2]2 and Eu(Phen-PO-iPr)(NO3)3 were obtained by chemical synthesis with the Phen-PO-iPr ligand. X-ray diffraction studies revealed a closer contact of the f-element with the aromatic N atoms in the case of sterically loaded P═O ligands compared with sterically deficient ligands. Density functional theory calculations allowed us to rationalize the observed selectivity trends in terms of the bond length, Mayer bond order, and preorganization energy.

Abstract
The phase transfer of ions is driven by gradients of chemical potentials rather than concentrations alone (i.e., by both the molecular forces and entropy). Extraction is a combination of high-energy interactions that correspond to short-range forces in the first solvation shell such as ion pairing or complexation forces, with supramolecular and nanoscale organization. While the latter are similar to the long-range solvent-averaged interactions in the colloidal world, in solvent extraction they are associated with lower characteristic lengths of the nanometric domain. Modeling of such complex systems is especially complicated because the two domains are coupled, whereas the resulting free energy of extraction is around kBT to guarantee the reversibility of the practical process. Nevertheless, quantification is possible by considering a partitioning of space among the polar cores, interfacial film, and solvent. The resulting free energy of transfer can be rationalized by utilizing a combination of terms which represent strong complexation energies, counterbalanced by various entropic effects and the confinement of polar solutes in nanodomains dispersed in the diluent, together with interfacial extractant terms. We describe here this ienaics approach in the context of solvent extraction systems; it can also be applied to further complex ionic systems, such as membranes and biological interfaces.

Abstract
Selectivity between Am3+ and Cm3+ was investigated after their aqueous complexation with three structurally tailored hydrophilic bis-(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl) ligands followed by their extraction with N,N,N'N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) dissolved in an ionic liquid (C4mim·Tf2N). The three hydrophilic ligands used were SO3PhBTP, SO3PhBTBP, and SO3PhBTPhen. It was evident from the solvent extraction studies that SO3PhBTP formed a stronger complex with Cm3+ than with Am3+, but SO3PhBTPhen showed better complexation ability for Am3+ than for Cm3+, and SO3PhBTBP showed no selectivity for the two actinide ions. DFT calculations indicated that the coordinating 'N' atoms in BTP were more co-planar in the complex and this co-planarity was higher in the Cm3+ complex as compared to that in Am3+. In the case of BTBP and BTPhen ligands, on the other hand, the co-planarity was more pronounced in the Am3+ complexes. Mayer's bond order calculations of M-N bonds in the complexes also indicated a reversal of the complexation ability of the BTP and BTPhen ligands for Am3+ and Cm3+. Calculations of the complexation energies further supported the higher selectivity of the BTP ligand for Am3+ by -52.0 kJ mol-1, and better selectivity of the BTPhen ligand for Cm3+ by -24.7 kJ mol-1.

Abstract
With the aim to find new efficient extractants for recovery of f-block elements from processing wastes of different origin, we have compared a series of phosphoryl-containing podands, including (2-(diphenylphosphorylmethoxy)phenyl)diphenylphosphine oxide 1 and its analogues 5–7, where the ArP(O)Ph2 group of phosphine oxide type is replaced by phosphonic fragments. Quantum-chemical modelling of the structures of phosphoryl-containing podands 1 and 5–7 has been performed, which was later confirmed by the data of X-ray diffraction. The features of extraction of nitric acid, as well as U(VI), Th(IV), Nd(III), and Ho(III) with compounds 1 and 5–7 from nitric acid media into 1,2-dichloroethane have been studied. The compositions of extracted complexes have been determined.

Enhancing the Am 3+/Cm 3+ separation ability by weakening the binding affinity of N donor atoms: a comparative theoretical study of N, O combined extractants. Dalton Trans 2021; 50:3559-3567. Abstract
Mutual separation of trivalent americium (Am3+) and curium (Cm3+) ions through liquid-liquid extraction is challenging due to the similarity in their chemical properties. Three N, O combined extractants 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid di(N-ethyl-4-fluoroanilide) (Et(pFPh)DPA), diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (Ph2PyPO), and alkyldiamide amine with 2-ethylhexylalkyl chains (ADAAM(EH)) have been identified to exhibit selectivity for Am3+ over Cm3+. In this work, the structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic behaviors of a series of representative Am- and Cm-complexes with these ligands have been systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on our calculations, the ONO angle formed by three donor atoms of the ligand in the Am-complex is slightly larger than that in its Cm-analogue. The studied ligands show their preference toward Am3+ by opening their "mouths" slightly wider. According to the Mayer bond order and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses, the interactions between the O donor atoms of these ligands and Am3+ and Cm3+ ions show some weak partial covalent character, and compared to the Am-O bond, there is relatively more covalency in the Cm-O bond in the corresponding complex. However, opposite results can be found in the Am-N and Cm-N bonding for the first two ligands. Particularly, for the better separation ligand ADAAM(EH), the Am-N and Cm-N interactions are extremely weak and no covalent character exists in the bonding. Nevertheless, the difference between the very weak Am-N and Cm-N interactions still leads to a better performance of ADAAM(EH). Based on the comparison of these ligands, we can find that weakening the binding ability of N atoms in the ligand may increase the difference between the Am-N and Cm-N interactions, thus enhancing the Am3+/Cm3+ separation ability of the ligand. Our study might provide new insights into understanding the selectivity of these three N, O combined ligands toward minor actinides and pave the way for designing efficient Am3+/Cm3+ extraction and separation ligands.
